[RBW] Re: new front racks?

2009-06-04 Thread GeorgeS

I have never used a front bag but I'm going to experiment this summer
with one of those boxy bags with the map case on top. There is a
bewildering variety of front racks. What factors should I be
considering? I want something I can mount a light (edelux) on.
Suggestions? Questions?

What brakes do you have? The answer to that will narrow the choice of
racks.

What fork mounting points does the bike in question have, and how do you
feel about P-clamps? That will narrow the range even further.

2009-06-04 Thread dukes...@yahoo.com

I've read all the replies but I'm wondering for those who recommend
the boonie and Tilley type hats, how do you keep the front brim from
blowing up against the center part of the hat while riding, thus
defeating the purpose of any sun-shading/blocking? I've tried
Columbia boonie hats, Tilley hats, straw hats, cheap WalMart fishing
hats and they all do the same thing. The brim blows up and I look
like an steel-stead riding Napoleon. Maybe I'm just going faster?

I gave up on these kinds of hats (though the boonie is my favorite off-
bike hat), and wear a baseball cap instead while on the bike. It's
the only one I've found that the brim stays down shading my face,
which I think is where you'd want the shading. Curious how others
fare.

A lot of people like the Acorn bags - a nice tan color with a kind of
buckle that's easy to use on the fly. I am very fond of my Bertoud -
a standard one with stretchy pocket closures.

As for the new racks - proto one looks ungainly to my eye, proto two
looks the business! Consider using the Nigel Smythe big box - the
ultimate in good looks, durability, and ease of use.

Patagonia sells what is essentially a long brimed baseball cap with
detachable neck flaps. I used it without incident on several tours
last Summer and Fall. For the most part I was not riding all that
fast, but there were some down hills. The hat did just fine. Be
warned you either have to be comfortable with extreme hat hair or
ready to wear the hat from start of ride until you hit the shower.

[RBW] Re: new front racks?

2009-06-04 Thread Esteban

So, those are my photos. The racks in development will come from
Nitto, who knows something about making strong racks. There are a few
in development, I took photos only of two. The first (I believe) will
attach right to a front mini (with the four eyelets), and may look
strange in its prototype form, but in person seems to be about
perfect.

Patience will yeild more information, I'm sure. Good to know there's
rack-age in the works, though!
