Since there was no mention of size/fit relative to the butternut
MUSAs, I assume they are sized about the same.
Any observations to the contrary before I order a pair?

It all goes to show just how much the cutting edge of technology has

coolest thing. As I recall the hoses those things were blest with had a

[RBW] Re: Chainline Question

2009-06-10 Thread Dave Craig

Garth

I haven't measured the chainline, but I can give you some info on what
has worked so far with my Bombadil.

I used the XD with 46/36/26 with a 113 Phil centered. It worked
flawlessly. I could have gone with a narrower bb, but I can't see why
that would be an advantage. With the 113, there was good clearance and
no shifting issues. I'm now using this set-up on my Atlantis and it
works great with a 12-27 rear cassette for unloaded mountain rides.

In an effort to get some lower gearing on the Bombadil, I took a TA
Carmina triple that had originally been on my Atlantis (worked great)
and put it on the Bomb. This crank was set up with 46/34/22 and TA
rings. This arrangement also shifted wonderfully. In the process,
however, I noticed that the 34 ring was well worn, so I got a
replacement (Raceface). This 34t ring had slightly longer teeth and it
rubbed on the chainstay!! I stuck a 119 Phil BB (centered) and it
works great with good clearance and problem free shifting. I'll be
riding this arrangement on a 1800 mile tour of the Pacific coast this
summer.

In my opinion, the Bombadil would be just fine with the XD crank, a
113 bb and a 46/36 or 34/ and 24 XD - cheap and effective. It is a MTB
though and, unfortunately, there seems to be too much BB drop to run a
44 or 42/32/22 for standard mtb gearing. The front derailleur won't
clear the chainstays. I find this to be an irritating aspect of Riv
bikes and especially so with the Bombadil. With big tires, it would be
nice to run the smaller rings for offroad riding and touring with a
standard MTB derailleur instead of the Campy Mirage that RBW now uses
to address the issues caused by the BB drop and bowed stays.

I can live with the gearing as is, but it would be nice not to have to
run an expensive crank on the bike just to get the 22t small ring.

DC

On Jun 9, 3:15 pm, Garth garth...@gmail.com wrote:
I guess it doesn't need to be an XD crank, as what I'd like to know is
what people are using for a chainline on their Bombadil, Atlantis or
 even Sam frames.

I asked about the XD because it's popular, and being a wider crank it
may need to use the wider chainline.. I'm trying to get an idea of
what I'm going to need,as I have no experience in triples for a frame
with such bowed stays. My '83 Stumpjumper used a road chainline of
45mm,  and the stays were parallel out of the BB, so ring clearance
 was never a problem.
