[RBW] Re: Glorious setup...
Hi Steve, when I had upright bars, I found a really tall/short Nitto Technomic (non-dlx) worked really well. You didn't say what kind of stem you have, but maybe try that first??? DE On Mon, Jun 29, 2009 at 9:14 AM, Steve Schermerhorn s_schermerh...@yahoo.com wrote: I've been riding my 58 riv mixte for the past 2 years, trying various setups, trying to get it nicely dialed in. To me, the main focus of the mixte is a comfortable ride. If I want to go faster (or carry lots of stuff), I have other bikes. When I'm riding the mixte in a fully upright position, the pedals feel too far back; I keep feeling like I want the pedals more forward (e.g. semi-recumbent). When riding in a more forward position, the pedals are in the right position, but then the comfort on the bars is minimized somewhat. Stem is a 12 Albatross bars Crystal Fellow seat post and a Velo Orange Mod 8 saddle, shoved all the way back. (I started with a Brooks B33, and the back of my legs did NOT like this saddle at all. The VO8, while the springs are a little noisy, is very comfortably shaped.) I have been thinking about swapping the 12 stem for a much shorter (8?) stem, and swapping the Crystal Fellow with a post that will place the saddle at least 4cm further back. Will I likely gain comfort in the upright position? Will I lose the advantages I'm enjoying in my forward position? Any comments/experience on this is welcome. [RBW] Re: Brooks Swift or B17 Narrow, ti or steel rails?
I think many will agree that Mercian are the proper British equivalent of Rivendell. You have a great bike there. Color is personal, but I really like the Brooks Honey. It is more neutral looks good with almost any other color you use with your bike. Which Ideale saddles do you have? There are several possible issues with the leather that could leave them less comfortable. First, Ideale had several grades of leather. Some of the basic grades were more stiff. The highest end was stamped with Rebour. This was glove soft and is quite comfortable even today if well cared for. Which gets to my second and third possiblities. If the saddle is used, it is possible it was not properly cared for over the years. To little or the wrong kind of leather conditioner and the saddle starts to dry out. Also, you never know if some prior owner did not over stretch the saddle. Even if you got the saddle new old stock, who knows where it was stored. Temperature and humidity need to be correct to keep leather in good condition. And of course, leather saddles conform to the shape and weight of the rider. If the original owner has a significantly different body from you, then it is possible they wore the saddle down wrong. [RBW] Somewhat Offtopic: If you were in San Francisco and observed an accident on 18th and Valencia yesterday July 1st
As the title says, I know this is a little offtopic, but I know there are also a lot of Bay Area folk on this list and want to get this to as many people as possible. A father with son on a trail-a-bike was struck in a hit and run yesterday on 18th and Valencia and police are asking for any additional information. I rode by as the father and son were being loaded on stretchers into the ambulance and seeing that trail-a-bike on the ground and the tiny stretcher for the kid was quite heartbreaking. The police are asking for additional information to find the hit and run vehicle/owners. From http://sf.streetsblog.org/2009/07/02/bicyclist-young-son-injured-in-hit-and-run-crash-on-valencia-street/ Bicyclist, Young Son Injured in Hit-and-Run Crash on Valencia Street by Bryan Goebel on July 2, 2009 A San Francisco bicyclist is asking for help locating witnesses who may have seen a hit-and-run crash Wednesday on Valencia Street -- one of the city's most popular bicycling corridors -- that left him with a broken back. Andrew Bennett wrote about the crash in an email he sent to the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition: Yesterday, at approximately 11:30 am, I was riding my bicycle northbound on Valencia with my 4-year-old-son behind me on his add-on tandem. While crossing 18th on the green light, a silver Chrysler PT cruiser gunned it through the red light, striking me and my 4-year- old, sending our bikes flying. It's a miracle that either of us are alive and even more so that my son's injuries were not life threatening. I sustained injury to the spine and now have a broken back. The driver did not stop. Bennett said there were several witnesses but no one was able to provide a more thorough description of the car or license plate number to the SFPD. He believes several witnesses left the scene on the assumption that other witnesses were providing information. I believe, based on several things said at the scene, that there will be zero effort put into the solving of this crime by SFPD ( due in large part to incomplete info) and I need help from the community in tracking this criminal down. We're likely to be bankrupted by medical costs even with insurance: I want to do everything legally possible to bring this person to justice. I owe it to my family and to my community. An SFPD spokesperson said the department typically does not release a lot of information about injury accidents for litigation reasons. The crash on Valencia Street is the second one we've heard of in the last two weeks. Bennett is also trying to contact some bicyclists who were on the scene. I would like to reach them both to express my thanks and to inquire if they have any information that might get this driver off the streets before someone dies. Anyone with information is urged to call the SFPD's hit-and-run unit at 553-1641. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Surly Cross Check sizing question
I have a 54cm Quickbeam and ride a 52cm Crosscheck. The top tube feels a bit shorter on the Crosscheck but both fit. It looks like top tube is going to be the best bet on sizing a Surly, but if you know of any amazing secrets, please let me in! I'm currently trying to decide whether or not to couple one of my Rivs for all the travel I do, or to just build up a Surly Travelers Check.
