As stated, Bullmoose bars disappeared for a good reason. No adjustability in reach or angles. My '83 Stumpjumper had one, but would-be thief tried damaged it in college. It was the best thing that ever happened, as I got a Specialized Slingshot stem and bar instead. Personally, the photo of the Bombadil with the stacked spacers looks kinda silly, like a threadless wanna be. I'm surprised they made the quill too short. [RBW] Re: Whoa! Bombadil component alert!
But doesn't a lot depend on planning and intended use? Presumably someone who shells out the dough for a Bombadil is going to put a lot of thought into fit and function. If the Bullmoose work well for your intended use then the lack of adjustability is not a problem. My camper has a threaded stem and drop bars because I like to change set up depending on where I am riding. However, I have seen a lot of fellow tourers who have threadless stems with minimal spacers on them (meaning no room for up and down adjustment) and flat bars. I guess they can always flip or change the stem and put on different handlebars. But you can always take the Bullmoose off and put on another stem and bars as well. I imagine Nitto Bullmoose are going to be rugged as heck. Probably a good choice - if expensive and not for the many - for off road camping imo. About the Reynolds 531 tubing, I recall early Rivendell readers talking about the frames being 753 with forks that used 531. (I'm not saying that all came this way, but I do remember it.) Furthermore, the Heron Touring I used to have was made at Waterford in 1998, and its frame and fork were both made of Reynolds 531, with stickers and everything, so Waterford was still using 531. -James On Jul 5, 2009, at 2:29 PM, Jim Cloud wrote: The decal on the downtube of the bicycle on eBay is the same as that on my Rivendell, which was purchased new by me in 1996 (I'd assume it was also used in 1995). [RBW] Re: biggest tire on Hilsen?
Take a look at the Rivendell website. In the Read About It section for the Hilsen, the maximum tire size is stated as 40mm without fenders, 38mm with. Good luck. [RBW] Re: Schwalbe Middy 650B
I believe Schwalbe tires are quite serviceable and may even reign supreme in the world of flat resistance and durability - that is to say, in commuterland. Schwalbe are justifiably popular with distance tourers, mountain bikers, and among specialty bike - folders, recumbents, adult trikes - owners. Schwalbe 650b offering is relatively recent. It will be interesting to see whether it starts offering some of its mainstay tires as 650b. Of course those would cost a lot more than the one Riv is selling now. [RBW] Re: Schwalbe Middy 650B
I've been trying to hold out for a Marathon Supreme in 650b. Given the market for $50+ (I have trouble paying auto tire prices for bicycle tires, personally) 650b tires, I think Schwalbe missed the boat manufacturing the ho-hum Middy that competes in price with the 105/Ultegra standard Col de la Vie. Street prices of the CdV are tough to beat for performance; I have trouble justifying automobile tire prices on a bicycle -- wasn't there at least one contributor on an ancillary list who traded in some of those very colorful and expensive tires, returning to CdVs, sensing no discernable difference? Tempted to trade up from CdVs to a more durable tire, (superstitions aside) we've had phenomenal flat free performance these last six months with ours (two Bleriots); that's about 2500 mi. Then again, I'm eyeing the street price of Fatty Rumpkins ... Ditto comparing it with my '96 A/R (even the same size, which in retrospect is about 4 cm too short for me). The color, the decals, the frame tubing, the lugs all seem correct. The lugged stem of course came later than 1995. Although as a point of accuracy, IIRC the lugs are not made by Henry James. [RBW] Re: Schwalbe Middy 650B
I got about 3 months on the Schwalbe Marathons (650b) and I like them a lot. I converted from CDlv's and to be honest I really can tell much difference. My biggest gripe with the CDLVs was that they were a major pain to mount and some of them appeared to have a built-in wobble. The Marathons mount easily, ride comfortably, and (best of all) no flats yet. On Jul 5, 6:32 pm, Chris Halasz chal...@gmail.com wrote: I've been trying to hold out for a Marathon Supreme in 650b.
