I believe the triangular braces were added recently. There was some
material in the RR a while ago about trusses (bridges) and triangles
being a good structural shape.

Angus Whos rear rack seems to work just fine without the braces L

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Road Standard, 56cm

2009-08-26 Thread David Hallerman
Hi,

I'm selling one of my two Rivendell Road Standard framesets. This is
Waterford-built, circa 1995, made from Reynolds 753 tubing, with the
fork being Reynolds 531. This is a fine general-use road bike -- great
for daytrips, club rides, even has braze-ons for a rack. Very stable,
with Rivendell's classic lower bottom bracket.

The basic geometry is:

Seat tube = 56.0cm (c-c)
Seat tube = 57.5cm (c-t)
Seat angle = 72.5 degrees
Head tube angle = 73.5 degrees
Top tube = 57.5cm (c-c)

The frameset is silver, with dark blue head tube and other touches. It
was repainted by Tom Kellogg at Spectrum Cycles, and it's an elegant
paint job, far better than the original one.

Links to pictures below.

One thing to note: There is a small ding on the head tube.

PRICE = $950, plus shipping, for the frame and fork.

If you'd want a headset, I could install a brand-new Chris King 2-Nut
headset (the classic one) in silver, at cost. (I believe they go for $125.)

I am not a shop or anything. Just a mildly crazy bike person, with
several bikes and the tools and skills to work on them.

Dave, who says the one he's not selling is the exact same geometry too
which describes both why he bought this one originally and why he's
selling it now

[RBW] FS: *Brand New* Black Brooks B.17 Standard

2009-08-26 Thread Mike Shaljian

Greetings RBW Owners,

I bought a B.17 Standard on Ebay a while back for a Ressurectio I'm
working on, but I decided to go with a B.17 Special for it instead.
Therefore, I need to sell this brand new, still - in - full -
packaging Standard black B.17. It also includes the Brooks saddle
tensioning wrench twined to original packaging.

It will come in the extra fancy box that Brooks sends their stuff out
in, and the saddle itself is attached to the company cardboard
placard. It has never, ever been used or treated with anything.

Picture of a B.17 from Riv here:
http://www.rivbike.com/products/list/saddles_and_seat_posts#product=11-055

Price is $90 + $10 s/h = $100.

Many thanks for your interest,

Mike

[RBW] Re: Added photos of bikes on RBW site

2009-08-26 Thread doug peterson

Angus:

Yours looks same as mine except mine has the braces at the top. I
really can't see a Nitto flexing much in the plane the braces are
bracing. Some of the racks on the Riv site have a more elegant curve
at the bottom, where they fasten to the drop out. Much nicer than the
squared off shape of mine, with the double bars at the bottom. It
does provide a lot of places for bag attachment, with the loop and the
pin, etc.

[RBW] For Sale: My Quickbeam's Stock Wheelset

2009-08-26 Thread Mike Shaljian

Greetings All,

Due to a previously committed buyer backing out, I am again offering
up for sale my Quickbeam's stock wheelset. The wheelset came with my
Quickbeam which was purchased directly from Rivendell in May. The
wheels have been ridden under 100 miles, as they were merely a
placeholder until I get some custom wheels built up. They are in
superb condition with no significant blemishes, and they are true.

The wheelset consists of the following: 32H Mavic Open Sport Rims.
Suzue track hubs w/ quick - release skewers (120mm rear/100mm front).
Excellent quality spokes of I - don't - know - which make gauge. An
18t Shimano freewheel. * There is also the option of adding a hardly
ridden Shimano Dura - Ace track cog for $15.

Pictures are available upon request, but you can get the idea of what
they look like from the Quickbeam complete bike pics on rivbike.com
Again, there are no significant defects cosmetic or otherwise with the
wheels.

Thanks for your interest,

Mike

What fork and what rim? Also, pad material can play a part.

There have been a couple of threads over on iBob list about this (and I
think the BayAreaCyclocross group). Among the common variables is how
extended the posts of the brake pads are. Narrow rims and a good amount of
extension seems prone to this. Of course, as was briefly covered here in
the past week, the newness of rim and pad makes a big difference as well.

Assuming you're talking about a higher frequency shudder (more than 3 or 4
per second), rather than a surging or stopping related to a specific spot
on the rim.

The problem is the stick-slip cycle. You can try cleaning the rim
very thoroughly, changing brake pads, even changing brakes.
Sometimes that works. The problem lies in the fork legs twisting and
flexing, causing the brakes to grab then slip then grab then slip
then grab then slip... Maybe installing a brake booster would stop
it.

If true, that would mean a very low inflation rate on this item! BTW, the
serial number will tell when teh frame was made, as opposed to circa
Waterford's system gives the month as a letter, the last 2 digits of the year
and the nth frame made in that month at the factory.

[RBW] Re: Search Function For This Group

The search function seems rather useless. It wasn't always this way, I

Thanks for mentioning this. I hadn't noticed that issue specifically.

I don't have time to dig deeply into the issue tonight, so here's the nickel
tour of the issue:

It appears that Google Groups has been having an issue with the standard
search function related to the groups. There is no official word on an
expected fix.

All the posts of this group are still available. You can find them if you
go to the group page, then click on About This Group. There is a tally by
month of the posts to this group. You can click on each number to see that
month's posts.

The current specific workaround seems to be by using the Google Groups
Advanced Search page - http://groups.google.com/advanced_search?q=;

If you use this search, it will generate a result which includes posts back
to the beginning of this group.

NOTE - When using the Google Groups Advanced Search page, you will need to
enter the specific name of this group: rbw-owners-bunch

Hope that helps. More info as I know more.

- Jim
