[RBW] Re: Looking for that String in The Custom Color Labyrinth (seeking Imron chart in San Diego area)

2009-10-14 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders

I am pleased to have a Roadeo on order and need to let the Rivendell
folks know the Imron color. I am in the San Diego area. Can anyone
suggest somewhere I can walk into to see an Imron color book or chart?

The color I want is a very old school celeste, like Bianchis were 50
years ago, sort of a pale blue. The Bianchis of recent decades are
much darker and often much greener, I believe. They are obviously
Bianchis to riders of the past decade because of that color. I want
the old style pale blue, because I like it better and also because I
don't want it to say Bianchi! to riders of the current era.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks!

If you like step-on pedals, that's fine. There are several very nice
ones on the market. They don't work for me, other than for an errand
bike, but if they work for you that's great.

However, you shouldn't exaggerate the defects of the alternative as a
way of advocating for them. Clipless pedals have come a long way since
the mid 1980s, and fixed-position pedals are a distant memory.

Really nice lightweight wool, no piling. One 15mm spot on front due to a
moth feast. It has a quick-fix darning job on it there that you can take out
do better on. Ever so slightly shrunk for the stated large size. Fits more
like a medium but evenly shrunk.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/4010094071/ + the two photos after
that.

  Shipping is $5.

[RBW] Orange Hillborne with Albatross Bars

2009-10-14 Thread Bryan @ Renaissance Bicycles

In the spirit of the Fall season here in North Carolina, we took our
latest build-up outside of the photo studio for some EcoVelo inspired
photos. Since we couldn't quite capture Alan's photographic skill, we
decided just to take a lot of photos:

http://www.renaissancebicycles.com/gallery/rb-gallery-1/

Some general info about the bike:
-- 56cm Orange Hillborne
-- Dura-Ace 9-speed bar-ends mounted to Paul's thumbies
-- Sugino triple crankset and Shimano XT derailleurs
-- Velocity ATB hubs on Velocity Synergy 700c silver 36 rims
-- Schwalbe 700x38c Marathon Plus tires
-- Nitto dirt drop stem and Albatross bars
-- VO 48mm fluted fenders

Best of all, the bike has a great upright riding position, with plenty
of room for adjustment.

Thanks for letting us share,

Bryan

[RBW] Re: Roadeo art

2009-10-14 Thread rperks

I agree that it has the potential to be beautiful, but I am on the
list for a rodeo and will likely be costomizing my head badge if this
is what they are. The broken circle of the sun is rising over the
edge of the blue sky? What are now the green hills are in the
foreground, and the now blue area appeared to be hills/mountains in
the distance (hence the road continuing up into them) with a rising
sun before colored as these prototypes. Likewise the textured clouds
could be really cool if surrounded by blue as opposed to a complete
sky of silver. So close and a lot of time and money for something
that is so close but just a little off, at least to my eye.

Again, just my opinion, but these could be really beautiful, if left
in an antiqued brass, imagination required for colors and then these
debates could become the fodder of fireside debate.

speedblend design. His original goal was to sell the design to a large
tire companies for use on car tires. If that was the case, he could
have, would have, maybe even should have made his millions. :)

So, the speedblend tire was developed in an effort to get out the
design in the hope that a car tire mfr might see it and want to
license the patent. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to have ever
caught on. Too bad, Grant could have used the money to further Riv and

You would want to have a very smooth shoe sole with that set up.
Getting your foot in and out of toe clips where the pedal has a grippy

on rides where you start and stop often it can be a bit of a pain.

I never found Grip Kings to be that grippy. There have been times when
I thought Slip KIngs would be a better name for them. Same with the
MKS touring pedals. Part of it was just getting used to the pedals
after so many years using clipless. I've found the the MKS touring
pedals are a little more comfortable for my feet. I use them without
clips and straps.

I still have to post the picture on my flickr page but when I was in
NYC earlier this week I came across a lugged Eddy Merckx doing
messenger duty that was sporting Grip Kings. Seemed rather
incongruent.

Since you asked for other reccomendations, look at :http://
www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?cat_id=28p_id=1121729 I have two
seasons with this bag. Sleeps like a rectangle, weighs 1.9lbs. packs
to the size of a large coffee can. Rated at 30 degrees and I've used
it from 80 degrees down to below freezing. Very happy. For a great
tent, also two seasons of touring look here:
http://www.bigagnes.com/Products/Detail/Tent/SeedhouseSL2 . I use the
SL2 for added room and not much more weight. The SL1 is a bit smaller
and lighter. The tent is wicked fast for setting up, held up this
summer at 9,850 ft elevation howling storm with rain the size of
quarters on an abandoned logging road just outside of Yosemite NP
above Tioga Pass.

Both combined the are just a bit over 5lbs. There are lighter ways to
tour but I like the comfort and use of a good bag and a good vestibule
for my bags.

market for a sleeping bag (and a 2-person tent) to use on a short tour
and I live in Northern Florida, so a summer/fall weight bag would be
appropriate, though we do get about a week of near freezing
temperatures in the middle of winter.  Anyway,  I'm intrigued by some
of the rectangular shaped bags as well, or at least mummy bags that
offer some room to breath, especially in the toe box, or bags that can
unzip fully and act more as a blanket than a snug fitting bag.  At
home, my feet usually like to be on the outside of my comforter and I
can imagine feeling pretty overheated and claustrophobic in something
too restrictive.  Any Wiggy's users out there?  Or other
recommendations that might work in my case?

[RBW] Re: grip kings with toe clips

2009-10-14 Thread JoelMatthews

I have a set of the MKS RX-1 track pedals. I set them up with Bruce
Gordon half clips on my city bike. Riding with smooth soled shoes was
no problem. But when I wore a pair of sneakers with tread lines that
went from side to side, the tread would catch on the pedal.

I think the best pedal for half clips are the platform designs such as
the old Lyotard Berthets and the modern manifestation of same White
Industries is now making. I have both and really like them, although
I normally keep the Lyotards on a shelf. Antiques deserve their rest.

[RBW] Re: Clipless Pedals

2009-10-14 Thread sanjoser

well, I went to shimano spd's a while back (646), but I did it
because I'm a left leg amputee, and I really can't hold my leg on
a plain old pedal. in fact, last year I even abandoned a shoe and
mounted
the spd cleat directly on my artificial foot under the heel, which
I'd
recommend to any amputee. It took a little leg length and seat height
adjusting, and
walking isn't pleasant, but it makes riding really nice.

[RBW] Re: Wiggy's Sleeping Bag

2009-10-14 Thread Ray Shine
As an avid backpacker, and one who once sewed his own quilt (not so neat of a
result) I can explain why quilts are so handy and practical.  If one uses a
down sleeping bag in the traditional manner, he or she loses almost all of the
thermo value underneath the sleeping body as the weight of the sleeper
compresses the down, thereby neutralizing any loft, therefore losing nearly all
thermo value.  Down is most effective when it is lofted, therefore unzipping it
and using it as a quilt, with feet tucked into the partially zipped toe box, is
an extremely efficient way to use the bag, and it provides S much more
comfort when tossing and turning.   Of course, the bottom thermo value of any
bag is gained not from the bag, but from the mattress.  The mattress is the
most important thermo block to protect one from low ground temps.  If you have
not tried sleeping using a mummy bag unzipped as a quilt, I highly recommend
it, especially for three-season
 use.

Those quilts are a really cool idea, but I have a hard time seeing how
they would cover as well as a sleeping bag.

[RBW] Re: Orange Hillborne with Albatross Bars

2009-10-14 Thread Bryan @ Renaissance Bicycles

The brake choice came down to the decision by the customer. He had a
definite preference for caliper brakes, so since we could (by the skin
of our teeth) make them work with the fenders, we went with them (and
we had a pair of Shimano canti's waiting in the wings just in case.)

The skewers (and wheelset) are all Velocity.

And more Murphy updates are soon ... although a pile of parts is just
not that exciting to photograph. But we'll see if we can make it
interesting.

Thanks for all of the complements,

decided just to take a lot of photos:

 http://www.renaissancebicycles.com/gallery/rb-gallery-1/

Any particular reason why you didn't want to use the canti studs?

[RBW] Re: grip kings with toe clips

2009-10-14 Thread JoelMatthews

I've not tried them. In my opinion, the VO look better, as I prefer
all silver components. It does not seem likely a $40.00 pedal is as
smooth as the $110.00 NJS approved pedal, however. Good bearings are
expensive.

Hey Joel, have you tried the VO pedals. They seem nice and I wonder
how they compare with the MKS pedals.

I have a set of the MKS RX-1 track pedals.  I set them up with Bruce

went from side to side, the tread would catch on the pedal.

I think the best pedal for half clips are the platform designs such as
the old Lyotard Berthets and the modern manifestation of same White

I normally keep the Lyotards on a shelf.  Antiques deserve their rest.

You would want to have a very smooth shoe sole with that set up.
Getting your foot in and out of toe clips where the pedal has a grippy
surface can be a bit of a challenge.  No problem on long rides.  But
on rides where you start and stop often it can be a bit of a pain.

[RBW] Sackville Shopsack!

2009-10-14 Thread Ryan Watson

I got mine a few days ago and it's pretty neat.
Perfect fit in the large Wald basket.
I'm using it folded in on itself as a sort of basket liner.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/7556...@n06/4012913670/

Most of the time I'll just toss stuff in as is, but I'll have the option of
zipping it up properly as cargo and weather dictate.

[RBW] Re: Clipless Pedals

2009-10-14 Thread Pierre Lachaine

I will never forget my first century attempt, in 1973 wearing athletic
shoes (we called them sneakers in those days) with my Campagnolo
Record quill pedals. (I also wore shorts made from cut-off denim
trousers with briefs underneath, and did not wear gloves.)

I can still feel the burning lines of fire in my feet whenever I think
   of it.

Internet forums are full of either-or thinking. It doesn't have to be canvas
running shoes on quill pedals. It could be any touring shoe. The idea is that
you can ride in any shoe, not that you have to ride in any particular one. I
wouldn't venture out into a long cycling tour without appropriate shoes, but
that doesn't mean it has to be on clipless pedals. In the meantime, most of my
day-to-day riding involves jaunts around the city for 20-30 miles. I can do
that in just about any shoe I have in the house, including the 20-dollar
athletic shoe clones I bought on special at a discount store.

I use toe clips though. I'm not too found of bare pedals without any foot
restraint at all.
