Re: [RBW] Christmas Loot Pre-Ride Briefing

2009-12-25 Thread Ray Shine
Workstands are so handy.  Congrats!  I use mine all the time.  My loot is
a nice pair of Ibex El Fitto riding knickers, which I have wanted for a long
time.  I use other knicker brands, but have long wanted these.  I'll wear them
today on my Christmas ride down to my son's home for the family dinner.
Besides the great knickers, my wife also gave me strict orders to be at the
family confab no later than 3:00 PM. As she made very clear to me, there will
be no excuses for being late!  So, that in mind, I'm leaving our home in San
Francisco early, and I'll take a casual ride down to San Mateo. It's about a 30
mile ride.

I just returned from walking the dog.  We live just a few blocks from the
Golden Gate (Straits and Bridge) and our regular 3-mile loop takes along Baker
Beach and back through the Presidio.  I was surprised at the numbers of people
out and about this morning.  Peolple were already setting up at the picnic
spots at Baker Beach, barbeques already fired, and even some brave young souls
out in the chilly surf. It's a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky. Temps at
my house are currently 54 (11:00 AM).  I was planning to ride down the
peninsula via Skyline and Crystal Springs Res/Sawyer Camp Trail, etc. But,
given the great numbers of people I saw while walking the dog -- cyclists,
families walking, tourists, joggers, more dog walkers, etc. -- I am thinking
that Sawyer Camp will be packed (lots of kiddies with new bikes and scooters,
and hot wheels, etc.) so I think I'll take the city loop around Embarcadero
instead.  That'll take me down along the
bayshore, past SFO, and into San Mateo.   I'm planning on taking a few pix
that I'll post later, just as I am looking forward to the Christmas rides of
others.

I have even decided to dust off the Romulus for this ride.  Haven't been on
that old steed for weeks.  Merry Christmas all!

Ray

Re: [RBW] Christmas Loot Pre-Ride Briefing

2009-12-25 Thread Rene Sterental
Merry Christmas Ray!

I have just returned from my 10 mile ride around Palo Alto and Los Altos...
I need to work on my fitness so I can come ride with you next year! :-D

I hardly saw a soul in my ride, although I wasn't at any large park or
anything like it. However, I was expecting to see more people and was
surprised at how quiet it all was. Just a few runners and people walking
their dogs...

I rode the Bombadil today with the Schwalbe Marathon Extreme 700x40 tires.
They seem narrow, compared to the 2.2 and 2.0 knobbies, but they roll very
smoothly on the pavement and the standover height has increased to a point
where had I put these tires first, I would have never even considered that
the frame was too large. It fits perfectly and I'm thinking I'm going to put
nice fenders on it and use it as a trail/touring/leisure bike. I took off
the rear rack from the Homer and will put it on the Bombadil to use it when
I need to carry panniers as well. It might even turn out to be my rain bike!
Still doing some minor fit adjustments, lowered the Moustache bars a bit and
am feeling almost perfectly dialed in in it.

I rode my Homer the day before yesterday, on a 15 mile ride, and it's
amazing how incredible it feels when I get back on it after riding the
Bombadil. I honestly can't really say which bike I like better... I just
love them both!

Am thinking of trying a pair of Marathon Supremes 2.0 on the Bombadil...
we'll see...

We are having friends over, so I must go now and help. I'm out of town next
week so I won't be able to ride unless I convince the extended family to
rent some beach cruisers in Ft. Lauderdale...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! May 2010 bring us all health,
love, prosperity and plenty of time to ride our fine machines!!!

Re: [RBW] Christmas Loot Pre-Ride Briefing

2009-12-25 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Merry Christmas to all Riv Riders. I rode the Motobecane fixie 8.8 miles to
church and then the 8.4 miles to Mom's; quite enough for this
almost-55-year-old given the stiff north headwind and the climb from the Rio
Grande valley to Rio Rancho; my only low gear, beside the already lowish 66
fixed, is standing, which I did for a couple of miles, on and off. 25F when
I started out, about 32F on the later leg, with said headwind, and frankly,
I wished I had a lower gear -- I hope to get a 21 t cog for the flip side of
the hub for a 56 bailout.

But wool is wonderful stuff. 1 shirt-weight layer of 70% silk, 28% merino
and 2% who knows, under a shirt weight 100% merino layer, under a thin
Cannondale petrochemical fleece vest; plus faux-Peruvian hat plus heavy
gauntlets plus tres chic 25+-year-old Sidi fleece-lined road shoes converted
to walkable soles and heels -- tres confortable. I was just now wearing the
two wool/silk and wool layers indoors at about 68F and I was still
comfortable.

My gift to myself for Christmas was a DN72 wheel rebuild for the Motobecane;
photo here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/BERTIN753/BIKESMISCELLANEA#5418825660014666498

My other Christmas present to myself will be a SON20R/Cyo build by Rich at
Riv for my 559 bsd road Riv commuter.

Speaking of, yesterday I did a beautiful ride on my Romulus from San
Francisco to Cupertino via PCH, Skyline, Sawyer Camp Trail, Cañada, etc.
Thanks to Ray for the Sawyer Camp Trail recommendation, it was just awesome!
Apparently it's often very busy but it was fairly empty on Christmas Eve. :)

A ride on the trainer and a run on the treadmill was all I could muster for
yesterday or today. Blizzard conditions with 45 to 50 mph gusts made me
thankful for my wood stove. One of my daughters is snowed in at her
in-laws-to-be and the other lives in Austin, TX with her husband. Both have
been in touch, but the Holiday seems strange without them. Best Holiday wishes

Like Dave said, I've got that workstand. I'll bet that tiny bike is pretty
easy to lift up into the stand as well...much easier than your Quickbeam.

The first thing folks always seem to ask about my QB is how much it weighs,
so

How much does that tiny bike weigh? Are you going to be able to fit fenders
on it? There doesn't seem to be much clearance, though the tires look nice.
Are they .650B?

Merry Christmas and Aloha!

Great Christmas breakfast @ my mom's, then presents at mi casa, then a ride,
then dinner back at my mom's (she's two miles away). Finished up playing
games and reading with the kiddo.

Wonderful ride to my favorite out and back hill climb. I really like taking
my Quickbeam on this route for some reason. Stopped and visited with my
kiddo's PE teacher who was out with his family, then with one of my
colleagues from work who was out with her mom. 65F sunny!

[RBW] My new Quickbeam

2009-12-25 Thread Ron MH
Prior to selling my lovely Ahearne I managed to score a near perfect
Quickbeam frame and fork. The previous owner had the paint bead
blasted off (the original QB orange), then made the effort to
carefully sand away most of the surface colour irregularities in the
steel. The result is really sharp. The build took some time, as I had
to collect the parts from various sources. You'll probably guess where
much of it came from by looking at the build list. John at Rivendell
was kind enough to send me the old style decals for the bike. They'll
go on in the next few weeks (after I build up the expertise and the
courage to apply them). I took the 'beam out on it's maiden voyage on
Christmas eve. It performed beautifully. I love the cush of the Jack
Brown tires and the quiet of the drive train as I pedal along.

Here is a link to one of several photos (just browse around that part
of my flickr site for the rest) and a partial parts list:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/visiondrawn/4211930749/in/photostream/

- Rivendell Quickbeam 62cm clear powder coat over bare steel
- Sugino XD-2 triple crank (with 40-32 rings and a chainguard)
- MKS touring pedals with Powergrips
- Phil wood high flange flip flop rear hub/ Schmidt 20R front hub
laced to Velocity Synergy 32 hole rims (built by Rich Lesnik of Hands
on Wheels)
- White Industries 16-19 DOS freewheel, Shimano Dura Ace 16t fixed cog
- Nitto: M-12 rack, Technomic D'xe stem, 42 cm Noodle bars, Crystal
fellow seatpost
- Velo Orange grenouille brakes
- Brooks B-17Ti (an old friend)
- Busch Mueller IQ Cyo Senso Plus dyno light, Planet Bike Superflash
rear light
- Nigel Smythe Sons Banana bag (washed and rewaxed - thanks to
cyclofiend's recent video tutorial)
- SKS fenders (until I figure out if I can get along with Honjos with
a sliding rear fork end)

Have a great holiday season to everyone!
