[RBW] Re: What's in Your Saddlebag?

2010-01-28 Thread EricP
Must have been me. Don't remember if I brought a full tool kit on
that trip or not. Probably since the Brompton has a few special
needs.

That is a great tool for on the road adjustments/repairs. Could
easily be only tool in bag.

But what fun is that?

Even talked a co-worker into carrying one. (Rivendell content - she
owns two).

Well Jim says it wasn't him, and you're the only other Minnesotaian I've
rode with in 2009. :-)

It's actually a tool Rivendell should carry. Simple, no gimmicks,
relatively cheap at $9 (although I'm guessing it's made for less than a
dollar).

[RBW] WTT, WTB, Fs...sorry this is long

2010-01-28 Thread ccanter
Hello fellow Riv riders.

I need the following for an upcoming Sam Hilborne build.

A Sugino XD variety triple crank170 or 175mm (48 or 46, 34, 24.)
new or lightly used.

A set (bikes worth) of good quality V brakes.
New or lightly used.

A pair of good road/ trail tires about 35-38mm width in 700c.
Something similar to but other than Paselas, which I like but find the
sidewalls too vulnerable to rock cuts.
_

Some stuff I have that doesn't quite suit me that I need to get rid of
that I can trade or sell outright.

2 Panaracer TServ Protex tires.700 x 25mmRed... very little
use...100 miles or less, just enough to get them dirty.

2 Kenda Krisps 26 x 2lightly used.

2 Ritchey speed max...26 x 2...wire version...some use...lots of life
left.

2 Specialized Ground Control...26 x 2 maybe 2 1/2...these came on a
set of used rims I bought...they appear to be lightly used...wire
bead.. black wall .have bar type lugs on them.
I'm told these were popular and no longer produced.

2 Pasela TGs in 28mm.mounted and ridded once.

A Shimano Deore LX crank/ BB combo...the hollow tech type. has
48/36/24 rings and about 3k miles use. It came on a bike I purchased
new
in 2005. I seem to remember the specs saying it was compatible for 68
to 73mm shells, but I'm not sure I have the parts for 73mmthe bike
had a 68 mm shell. Condition...8-9 out of 10.

A bar-stem-levers- grips combo using these bars.
http://aebike.com/product/dimension-25.4-70mm-riser-bar-50deg-sweep-silver-sku-hb2042-qc30.htm
1 quill stem ,black, says Mongoose on it. 2 Tektro brake
levers...all black for Canti brakes. Cork grips glued on and wrapped
in black Terrostar tape .
Found these too wide for my taste so 1-2 have been lopped off the
width. Would be good for a upright beater project. Can take picture
if any interest.
Also have one of the bars unlopped as well.

A set of Deore 3x9 STI flatbar shifters...black.

Stems.
1 1/8 threadless.
Ritchey Pro..17deg..135mm, 26mm, black. like new.
Ritchey Comp...6 deg 90mm. 31.8mm black very well used but fully
functional.
Salsa Moto...115deg 90mm31.8mm black. well used but fully
functional.

1 treadless
Kalloy AS 6026 forged (silver)
17 deg 130mm for 26mm. new, unused.
Mistakethought I was ordering 1 1/8.

1 threaded.
1 Cinelli...26.4..silver 10cmsome rust stains below
insertion level.

Handlebars.
2 Cinelli...26.4, one 42, the ohter 44. both silver and single
groved.

I would prefer trades for what Im looking for, but feel free to make
offers for anything you are interested in, though I probably won't
respond right away to offers to buy.
Off list of course and thanks for looking.
Best,
Clyde Canter

This is true, but as I told Seth in a private message, if I actually took
any initiative in life, what would I have to complain about?

:)

But yes, we need to get you all down to San Diego's east county for some
epic mixed surface riding. And I need to suck it up and drive up to LA,
after the Death Valley Double training that is.

There's been some private discussion going on about an uncharted,

fun let me know and I’ll email you the proposed route, that’s bound to
change several times during the actual ride. Should be a fun, start
early, out for 4 or 5 or 6 or hopefully not 7 hrs or so.

[RBW] MKS Pedals...creak...creak...click...

2010-01-28 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I guess I'm not alone. My new Quickbeam (circa 12/09) creaked, groaned, and
clicked a bit since I received it. Much of it seemed to do with with my
Brooks B-17 Special. All of my Brooks saddles have added a bit of noise till
they broke in a bit. Some of the rest I attributed to having a new bike.

Over the course of the last few weeks it got worse so I started methodically
taking things off and making sure I'd greased them up before putting them
back: seat post, saddle rails, nuts and bolts, you name it, I greased or
oiled it.

And that mostly worked until my S24O to Malaekahana. The ride there (60
miles or so) was no problem. On the way back my QB starting creaking and
clicking to beat the band. I'd had a bottom bracket wear out on another bike
but this was too new! Still it felt pretty much the same, every revolution
I'd get a click I could feel through the whole bike, and then a bit of a
groan. Often that last bit was me. Sigh.

By the time I got home I was pretty disgusted and thought I should have
gotten the Phil Wood BB instead of the whatevahs. But at the time I just
couldn't drop another dime, what with Xmas coming up and all. So now I was
faced with the realization that I coulda, shoulda, di'nt.

I thought I'd take one more dive into the bowels of the net to see what I
could find before pulling the trigger. I remember this from the description
of my MKS touring pedals:

They come with a factory/assembly line adjustment, which isn't ultra
smooth.

Okay, maybe its the pedals after all...I hoped. A bit more diving and I came
across this from bikeforums.net...

Panthers007 seemed to be speaking to me when he wrote: (
http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?576932-MKS-pedals-are-noisy-clickp=9535678viewfull=1#post9535678
)

The problem with them is you didn’t open them up and clean them and grease
them. A pedal-overhaul is needed before you put most new pedals – especially
with loose bearings – on the bike and use them.

I hear this complaint all the time regards MKS pedals. And it’s NOT your
fault. Overhauling pedals is a dying art. One I’m trying to resurrect.

Okay, I figured, pulling the pedals apart has got to be easier than changing
a BB...or at least cheaper since I didn't plan on doing the former myself.

And...

It is really quite easy, even someone with lots of thumbs. Just do it over a
bowl. A big bowl.

Once I got the pedals open I realized there was really next to no
lubrication at all in there. I fixed that in short order and put everything
back together.

I didn't get a chance to ride to check things out till today (I did the
pedals on Tuesday and rode another bike yesterday). I just came in from a
two hour ride and my QB is...

SILENT

It's hard to believe that just a dab of grease inside a the pedals can make
such a difference. Now everything, and I mean everything except the panting
of the rider, is quiet and smooth. Somehow the vibrations in the pedal must
have been plucking strings all over the bike as it were.

I really do mean the sounds literally seemed to come from everywhere. Mostly
the BB and seat post, but everywhere else too.. Now...nothing.

The moral of this story seems to be that if you have MKS pedals (at least
the touring version) and you have unexplained noises, clicks, creaks, and
groans besides your own, tear down the pedals and grease those bearings.

I'm sure lots of folks already know this, clearly the information was out
there, but I didn't and now I do.

My QB is now perferct. :-) (Well there a few bags I want)

Aloha from the suddenly quieter city of Honolulu!

Bob

[RBW] Re: MKS Pedals...creak...creak...click...

2010-01-28 Thread newenglandbike
I've had the same problem with MKS touring pedals, but I have to say
after greasing them they are great pedals. Sometimes the BB will
creak (or click) too if you haven't bathed the threads in enough
grease. I even had a crank/chainring interface creaking problem,
which drove me nuts and took me forever to diagnose, but applying a
smudge of grease on the bolts and crank spider shoulders finally made
it quiet again.

 )

 Bob

Re: [RBW] Re: MKS Pedals...creak...creak...click...

2010-01-28 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I think the reason I'd figured it was the BB was because I did just have a
new one installed on another bike and some of the symptoms where identical.
I'd worn that one out and couldn't for the life of me figure out how I'd
worn out a new one in just a month of limited riding though. I ride another
bike when I need to lock up in shadier places.

I'm glad it wasn't the BB (yet anyway). And yes, I love the pedals but I'm
definitely tearing down my next set before I even put them on a bike. I'm
thinking of getting a set of the Grip Kings to play with and moving the
touring set to my knockabout bike.

Eventually there be another noise I'm sure, but for now I'm drinking in the
silence. :-)

Aloha!

[RBW] 84Haiti deal

2010-01-28 Thread Grant Petersen
I think the 80 For Haiti should be a good ride, and ALL the loot goes to
Haiti. Anybody on this list who signs up: $20 credit on your account.

On top of that, I'll get the names of the Forum members who signed up, put
them on actual Post-Its, put those Post-Its in an actual hat, and draw out
four names, and if you're one of them you'll get an extra $50.

Butcha to qualify for this semi-gambling deal, you gotta sign up by the end
of Feb. Chris puts on good rides.this one's for a good cause.and no,
I'm not going because it's way too far from here, so this is what I'll do.

Aaron--if you go and you're the only one: $70 credit.

By the end of Feb.
