That's the same set of pictures that benjamin gave me the link for.
The picture I'm looking for was shot facing the front of the bike and
the camera was low to the ground. The bike was wearing a Berthoud
handle bar bag and a Tubus Nova front rack with no panniers. And for
what I wanted to see, the images you guys provided are good enough.
Like I said, I just got frustrated that I couldn't find the same
picture that I saw earlier.

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Speed Up My Sam

2010-04-28 Thread charlie
No worriesI can dig it and I do agree. One can get stuck in a
rut. When I commute in city traffic its always interval training
trying to make it through the darn traffic lights. I did this on a
single speed for a year averaging 17 miles a day and winding up my rpm
to 120+ quite often and that's with no retention on a 25 year old junk
parts bike. I loved it, no gears and riding hard while keeping my fast
twitchies around as I passed the 1/2 century mark. I tend to agree
with Gino on the bike setup, pretty elementary really and just
training like you mean it but in an incremental sort of way so you
don't blow out a knee or float a valve in yer old ticker !

[RBW] Re: MKS Grip Kings vs MKS Touring Pedals

2010-04-28 Thread Z I
In general, I really like the Grip Kings a lot. I have big feet --13,
sometimes 14 depending on the shoes, and the Grip Kings feel wonderful
under my feet. I love the support I get from how long they are, and
find it really nice to be able to move my feet around as needed. Like
Bruce, I too feel like I can get about 2/3rds of a circle of power out
them.

I used mine all winter here in Anchorage, and the one downside I found
was that any type of snow or slush built up on the bottom of my shoes
or on the surface of the pedals definitely made them "Slip Kings". I
had a number of frustrating and jolting starts at stop lights when my
foot just slipped off the pedal as I was trying to start out.

Late-December I followed the advice from one of the recent readers,
drilled holes in four positions on the outside set of holes, and
screwed in some stainless steel set screws on both sides. I can concur
that they are now truly the Kings of Grip. I found that the studs
worked particularly well with lugged sole winter boots, which seemed
to slip often before I installed them.

Re: [RBW] 61cm A. Homer Hilsen wanted

2010-04-28 Thread James Warren

But there's something about that AHH blue (the darker one) that makes minor
scratches feel right at home and almost a necessary part of the bike. I get
worried about scratches as much as anyone, but when AHH got some scratches from
getting whipped by the cable lock, I just looked at them and thought, "Oh,
that's cool. The lock's off. Time to pedal.")

Maybe it's the countryness of the bike that invites the beausage and not the
blue.

lol.

Sorry, but the mystery link is driving me crazy. I went back and read
every thread for the past couple of days, and I tried going through my
browser's history one web page at a time, but I can't find the link to
that picture. I do think it is the same bike benjamin linked to. It
doesn't matter. It's just frustrating.

[RBW] Re: MKS Grip Kings vs MKS Touring Pedals

2010-04-28 Thread jose
Yeah I went with the blunted spikes. I used 8 per pedal, so one bag
(32 studs) was enough for 2 bikes. Truly "Grip Kings" after that.

I have the sneaker pedals on another bike. They are comfortable too,
but I havent used them enough to say how the handle wet weather. My
guess would be they are ok.

[RBW] Re: Speed Up My Sam

2010-04-28 Thread Me
What I like to do for training [which is really just errands and just
riding] to be able to chase down and satisfy those urges for
overtaking pretty much anyone within sight:

1. Ride my Surly "Big Dummy" a lot, and with groceries and 78lb
daughter onboard, and do it as fast and as hard as I possibly can.
2. Ride my Surly "Pugsley" up and down Mt. Tabor a lot, as fast and
hard as I can possibly go... and do group rides on it too [these days
I can average 18mph on the Pug for a 2.5-3hr ride, which isn't that
fair off my average on my more Road-Centric bike, my Bob Brown custom,
which I can hold onto a 22mph average for 4 hours w/bags on-bike].

Most days I'll do 40-50 miles on either the Pug or Big Dummy, weekends
are for the Bob Brown. The dividends of the Pug & Dummy seem to pay
off nicely.

And then:

when I do ride my Bob Brown, speed and holding onto that speed really
seems much easier.

I do feel pretty tired at the end of each day though, but I like that.

Gino,

Great advice. Probably implied in your first comment, but intervals
are critical to increasing speed and ability to deal with rapid
changes in pace in group rides/races. Even on organized century
rides/brevets etc, if you are getting dropped from a paceline it is
probably because you coukld not cope wityh a change in pace.

Good luck and have fun. Intervals can suck, but they can also make
short boring rides much more palatable (like to the grocery store and
back...)

2010-04-28 Thread Gino Zahnd
If I were to give advice, which I don't claim to be qualified to give,
I'd say do the following if you're looking to be faster:

1) train to ride fast. Shorter rides at higher intensity. Ride a lot. Hard.
2) light wheels and tires
3) ditch the big touring rack, and use it for camping/touring
4) use a lighter wide-range compact double
5) if you live where it doesn't rain in the summer (like we do in
California), ditch the fenders for the summer.
6) save a quarter pound(er) on a Ti B17

But really, ride. And sportier wheels. And no huge touring rack.

Go!

[RBW] Re: Hobbies that compliment your Rivendell lifestyle

2010-04-28 Thread Philip Williamson
I was reading these great posts, and thinking "darn, I don't have any
hobbies!"

Except oh yeah - I paint, and I take analog photos sometimes, and I
screenprint tee-shirts in my garage sometimes. I sculpt. And I make
omelets every morning with eggs from our chickens or our friends'
chickens. I have two gallons of mead brewing - one just honey, pollen
and water, the other with black tea, ginger and whatever.
I tinker with my bikes, and build up bikes for my friends. This forum
might be considered a hobby - socializing with like-minded bike
people.

I'm with Scott - these things are what we do when we do them. Not a
hobby or a lifestyle. More like a life. I try not to feel guilt about
what I'm NOT doing, but take pleasure in what I AM doing, if that
makes sense. Oh yeah - I'm studying kung fu with my wife and kid. And
making a video game with the kid.

This perspective, I think, is very Rivendellian. Bikes aren't a
compartmentalized commodity or identity in the Rivendell world (as I
understand it), but part of the fabric of a cycler's life. Likewise,
beer brewing or music is something humans do as part of a full life.
Is there anything more fundamental to human society than those two

[RBW] Riv-friendly parts FS (Phil Wood, XTR, WTB, etc)

2010-04-28 Thread David Sprunger
If anyone is stockpiling parts for a new Hunquapillar or just making
some spring adjustments to your current ride, I have identified some
items that are ebay bound unless someone here wants them first. All
prices include US shipping. I’ve priced things below what I think
they’ll likely fetch on ebay, so these prices are fairly firm. Check
or paypal.

Please contact me off the list at sprun...@cord.edu.

Phil Wood wheelset. $400. 36h. 700c. 135 mm rear OLD. Takes 8/9
speed cassette. No skewers or cassettes. Bontrager Fairlane silver
rims with asymmetric rear drilling. Nice cosmetics. I’m the second
owner of these wheels, but the original owner reported that he
purchased them from Rivendell in the pre-Rich days. They spin smooth
and true. The freehub is nice and quiet.

XTR M900 hubset. $135. Hard-to-find 36h version. NOS. 135 mm rear
OLD. Takes 8/9 speed cassette. Screened logos are a bit faded. No
skewers. Build some light and sturdy dream wheels. These are the
classic silver style hubs that Peter White raves about. (Side rant:
where are all the older XTR skewers? I’ve purchased three NOS sets of
these hubs over the last ten years and none have come with skewers.)

Phil Wood quick release axle kit. 135mm. $50. Here’s the axle and
spacers you need to convert a bolt-on hub to quick-release use or to
convert a narrower hub to 135mm OLD. Everything is in excellent
condition. This came off a 10-year-old cassette hub, but supposedly
it will fit a range of Phil hubs.

White Industries platform pedals. Silver. $190. These pedals are new
but without packaging. They’ve not been mounted in a crank. The
pedals are smooth and exquisitely made, but they’re not as wide as I
had hoped for my size 13 feet. I stood on them in the living room and
decided to stick with my Nuovo Wides instead. More info at
http://www.whiteind.com/pedal.html

Tioga Surefoot 8 pedals, silver. $55. This is the BMX pedal that
Rivendell used to sell. The blunt tips are already installed, but I’ll
include the spikes and the little installation wrench. Light and
smooth. Used about 25 miles.

Brooks B17 Champion Special. $100. Rare dark brown color. (not
honey). Silver rails. Ridden about 300 miles, so it’s not really
broken in yet. Leather has been treated. Tension screw never
touched. I’ll include used matching leather bar wrap that’s been cut
into four pieces (I had one piece wrapped up from the tips to the
brake and one from the stem down to the brake.)

WTB Dirt Drop bar. $80. This is the classic drop bar with the
aggressive flair in the drops. I bought this for a conversion that
didn’t happen because I decided that I preferred the more subtle Nitto
Dirt Drops that I got from Rivendell. Sleeve shows some scratches but
the cosmetics are good overall. Takes a 25.4 stem, such as the
Rivendell special edition Technomic Deluxe or the Periscopa.

WTB Slickasaurus tires. 26” x 1.5. Pair. $35. This is a nice set
of 26 inch slicks. They’ve been mounted but ridden less than 10
miles. Blackwalls. I have the 700c version on my Quickbeam, and
they’re a quiet and smooth-riding tire.

Panaracer Pasella 700x37 TG tire. Free for cost of shipping on 7# box
(or I’ll include them absolutely free with a larger item). Ridden
about 1000 miles on a front wheel. Still looks pretty good. Tan
wall.

selling - please drop me an email. Riv has the frames in stock, but
I'm one of those people who prefers having a bike which has already
had a couple of scratches put into it - otherwise I will constantly
baby it and I'm sick of doing that. Plus, the cost savings will be
nice to have..

yeah, i used to get a kick out of that. and i found it very
interesting that he made his way to kogswell and discovered that brand
of bike geekery.

i imagine that all the talk about theory and intangibles (bike
handling, planing, design, materials, etc.) appealed to him.

musicians and luthiers engage in the same kind of chatter. afterall,
the end game is just sound, which is entirely subjective. but some
sound is "better" when it comes to music. especially for certain
kinds of music. and especially for certain musicians.

so, just as some aspire to ride a bicycle that "planes" or exhibits
certain characteristics, there are those that want a mandolin that
sounds like a '23 lloyd loar gibson or has certain tonal
characteristics.

so you end with framebuilders such as Alex Singer, Richard Sachs,
Weigle, etc.; and luthiers like Stephen Gilchrist, Mike Kemnitzer,
Dudenbostel, etc. who are said to make some folks' intangible/
theoretical ideals a reality.

of course, you could own a Singer camper, a Sachs cx bike, a Weigle
randonneuse and a Hunqapillar for the price of one of Lynn's
mandolins.

[RBW] link to orange saluki(?) + tubus nova front rack ?

2010-04-28 Thread happyriding
Hi,

Recently, someone posted a link to a picture of a beautiful orange
Saluki(I think) with a Berthoud handle bar bag and a Tubus Nova front
rack. I've been trying to find that link again with no success. Does
anyone have the link?

Thanks.

RE: [RBW] Haleiwa Metric Century Ride

2010-04-28 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
Great ride, and very enjoyable (and lucid) report of it. Thanks! (A century
in Hawaii -- THAT makes me envious!)

Subject: [RBW] Haleiwa Metric Century Ride

This past weekend I was able to participate in the JBK Haleiwa Metric Century
Ride on my Quickbeam. The ride is a stunner covering much of the north and
windward shores of Oahu running from Haleiwa to Ka'a'awa and back.

I don't own a car and I wasn't able to talk anyone into doing the ride with me
so I had to figure a way of getting the starting line by 7:30am on Sunday. I
could have taken a bus but since our buses can only hold two bikes that was a
bit chancy so I figured the best way to get there was to ride (of course).

I took Friday and Monday off of work and planned on spending three nights
camping at Malaekahana. It's only 18 miles from Haleiwa which seemed pretty
reasonable. I'd done the Honolulu to Malaekahana ride back in January and wrote
about it here so I knew I could do that part.

What transpired was just about the most fun I've had on a bike. Here's how the
riding went:

Fri - Honolulu to Malaekahana (about 60 miles)
Sat - Malaekahana to Haleiwa and back (about 36 miles)
Sun - Malaekahana to Haleiwa, the century ride itself, and back to Malaekahana
(about 100 miles added up)
Mon - Malaekahana to Honolulu (60)

That added up to about 250 miles over 4 days, the most I've ever ridden all
bunched up like that. I know it may not seem like much to some folks, but 2
years ago I just about keeled over riding the 1.5 miles from an LBS to my
apartment on the first bike I'd ridden in 20 years (and it had gears).

Admittedly the last time I did the Malaekahana run I left the gearing in my
standard 40x16 configuration and made it...barely. This time I got smarter and
dropped down to 32x19 while running the hills, especially Kapaa gulch which is,
um, well not that bad in 32x19 loaded down.

Here's the one picture I have of my QB on the way out:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/4559543495/sizes/l/in/photostream/

The packing seems a bit odd, but it worked out fine.

Up front I've got a SlickerSack filled with soft stuff like a tiny pillow, a
blanket, an extra shirt, and a few odds and ends. On top of that I've got my
Hennessy Hammock covered in a yellow rain cover and tied down with netting. In
back my Acorn is holding tools, lights, and some Clif bars. My large SaddleSack
has my Trangia cookset and the rest of the junk I brought along. It's really a
lot lighter than it looks. The QB handled fine out and back. Of course on the
century ride I had a lot less, though I still had my SlickerSack on to keep the
things I didn't want stolen with me. I was one of the few doing the century
with luggage. A woman rode past in tights on her Cervelo and said, somewhat
disparagingly to my ears, that I looked like Dorothy. I think she really meant
Miss Gulch. I suspect I rode more miles than she did this weekend so I took it
well. :-)

Everyone else on the century loved my QB at the rest stops though. One of the
guys providing mechanical help from a local shop couldn't believe it fit me
till I straddled it and showed him. I'm not sure he'd ever seen a 66cm. :-)
Several other folks knew exactly what my bike was, including one fellow who
mentioned that he'd ridden one of "Grant's Bridgestones" for years. I didn't,
however, see any other Rivs.

I was pretty beat on Monday when I pulled in at home, but to my real surprise I
woke refreshed this morning (Tuesday) with no aches or pains; a testament to a
good fit I'd wager.

Again, I didn't take many pictures, in part because I had to take a video
camera for another project (an interview of a coworker who stands guard on
resting green sea turtles at Laniakea Beach). I did take some vids at the start
and each of the rest stops and once I finish editing the turtle stuff I'll see
if I can put something together with that footage.

All in all it was a great time and I'll be doing this ride again, and again,
and (as I live on an island) again. :-) But as I did switch to a different gear
ratio for the hardest section of the ride I'm beginning to think I might want a
bike with gears one of these days.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Highrider front rack vs. Big Front Rack vs. Low Riders

2010-04-28 Thread Ken Yokanovich
I've used low-riders and the Rivendell Nitto big front rack.

On an old Trek 520 (before Rivendell acquisition) I used both older
Blackburn low-riders and the Nitto. I prefer the Nitto.

I have also used the Nitto on my custom Rivendell All-Rounder for
touring and now on my Atlantis. I really like the Nitto rack. The
bags ride a bit higher (I run the bags in the lower position), but
this added some welcome clearance from the ground. My old panniers
have several tears and scuffs from taking corners too aggressively. I
also like the platform up front. I've ridden with a basket zip-tied on
which is one of the greatest things to tour with. Toss things in,
easy to reach, etc.
