I completely agree, Joel. I have been running this combo for about 8 months
now, and it is super great for commuting. It's opened up the world of
running errands at lunch and carrying odd payloads when I randomly need to.
Thanks for the tape tip - don't know why I haven't tried that. Guess I got
used to the jingle. Definitely get a cargo net, too...

But, after a month of daily commuting I have to say - it does much
more than I expected! I can fit a change of clothes, lunch, mini U-
lock and a book up there no problem - thats all I need for the
commute. On the way home I can stop by the grocery store, record shop
or beverage barn and squeeze it in - no problem.

Tip: I put a little bar tape on the basket where I attach the shopsack
latch. Sometimes on a rough surface you get some clanky noise from the
loose metal to metal attachment point. I also put a foam pad on the
bottom of the basket to eliminate road noise if I'm running a lite
 load.

Maybe someday I'll use that big 'ol Nitto rack on the back of the
bike. Where are those new panniers anyway? Just asking...

+1 to Another superior (but tough)
alternate route is King Ridge Road just north of the Russian River-
you head up (and I do mean up) from Stewarts Point to Tin Barn Road,
then head south along the ridge. Bring plenty of water.

If you want directions from Mendicino to SF via mostly dirt (the roads
mentioned above) let me know. I initially got the route from Jay @

+1 for Bicycling the Pacific Coast.  It's based on camping lists

mile day still find a place to sleep.  In Oregon, don't miss Cannon
Beach (Seaside is so-so, bit touristy) and make sure to take the Slab
Creek alternate off 101.  It's the old road and absolutely wonderful.
Where it intersects the highway that takes you into Lincoln City, stop
for pie.  South of Florence, traffic thins out considerably.

For a unique camping experience, north of Jenner, CA is the Stillwater
Ranch.  You'll have to do some research to find it (or contact me off
list I'll dig out my notes) but it's just north of Stillwater Cove.
Used to be a working ranch, then lots of other things over the years.
I've stayed there twice, it's quite fun.  You have to rent a cabin
which gives you cooking, washing, etc. but they're pretty EZ about you
 pitching a tent.

The Fisherman's Wharf Hostel in San Francisco is the better one.  They
can take bikes while the downtown one doesn't have room.  There's also
a great hostel at Montara and the one at Pigeon Point looks good too,
although I haven't stayed there.  The hostel in Monterey has some bike
lockers.  All the hostels get booked up so make a reservation.
There's no cancellation fee if you give them sufficient notice or
 change your mind.

You'll have a great trip.  Just don't hurry too much.  It can be done
in 2 weeks but I'd suggest more time if you have it.

That whole deal was a shame. Especially since the Bleriot is such a
nice bike. I got mine way after it was discontinued and while I got a
deal on it I still didn't get the price that the discount places were
offering. Those were long gone. If I recall when I got one you had a
great deal on one but it was a size larger than I needed. Either way
as soon as they were discontinued and they started drying up the price
started to rise again and now that they are completely gone I would

Y'know, as I was riding home yesterday, it struck me that I left out another
quick drivetrain troubleshooting tip:

Put the bike in the stand and run the cranks backwards at a reasonably quick
rate. If there is a stiff link in the chain, it will visibly and audibly
chatter and stick when it goes through the tension and jockey wheels.

A slightly tight link could definitely behave in the manner you've
described, as well as cause chainsuck.

As noted the parts are pretty much stock Riv and chain is a 9spd SRAM.
I think I'll ping Riv and see what they say about installing the chain
with that 12-36t cassette since they sell that setup. Maybe the
standard chain sizing technique doesn't apply when you go outside the
 manufacturers stated cassette range.

I ended up taking another link pair out of my Hilsen's chain from the Riv
build.

I think what was the shocker for me is that everything was working so
beautifully and then bang it didn't.

You might also just eyeball the rear deralleur and hanger. Make sure that
the hanger didn't get bent or twisted.

No direct experience with that swap, but I would suspect that would work.

The only thing you may find is that if your existing cassette/chain have
some miles in them, you might end up with noise and possibly slipping on the
new cassette. I'd use a new chain on the old cassette first, to see if
there's going to be any drivetrain issues.

If you haven't used the existing setup much, that shouldn't be an issue.

The cassette is virtually identical so that's likely not going to give
you problems if the chain is long enough. However, different rear
hubs may have different freehub offsets so the position of the
cassette relative to the dropouts may be slightly different. If
you're using the same hubs for both rear wheels, then it's not an
issue. If you're using different hubs, you may have to adjust the
limit screws and zero position of the derailleur.

I would suggest using local-to-Rivendell place names, maybe in a

[RBW] Re: Nitto Mini FrontWald Med BasketShopsack = Perfection

2010-05-08 Thread Cycletex
I'm running the same setup on my Atlantis and you're right, it makes a
great around town configuration but I'll add that I also ride road
rides with the same combination and love it. It's really nice to have
the extra capacity the sack gives you and you can stop by the market
on the way home and top off the bag without having to go home first
and get your grocery bike.

Tip: I put a little bar tape on the basket where I attach the shopsack

Maybe someday I'll use that big 'ol Nitto rack on the back of the

BTW - another way to quiet down the sack is to attach the side latches
on the bottom rung of the basket to add tension and then throw a
basket net over the top. Not worth it around town but it's nice to get

Re: [RBW] Big Apples off-road

2010-05-08 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I use the 60s off road all the time for two reasons, first because my off
road rides also include a lot of pavement and there is nothing in cycling
more horrible than grimly, despairingly driving a fat, soft, 29 knobby
along pavement against a strong headwind; and second, because the BAs shrug
off our local goatheads so well. Yesterday I mistakenly rode through a 1/4
mile field and came out with, literally, *literally*, I say, over a hundred
thorns in both wheels -- I held a stick against the tires and spun the
wheels to flick them off and they were flying like water spray. Today the
tires have lost no air. I cannot say as much for any knobby I've used.

They have poor traction on loose surfaces -- I ride in sand -- but the float
helps make up for it if you run them quite low; I run the front as low as 12
psi (200 lb bike and rider) without fear of pinch flats. Note that I do have
45 mm wide rims (the BAs measure 65 mm on these rims).

[RBW] Re: Riv frames work great with drop bars

Not here. I've read that article several times in the past.

 UnSo! Terribly, terrifically unso.

The Top Tube Ruse in RR--40/ 41? talked all about that, but I realize people
come and go and land late and may skip over or miss, but basically, it's
like this. Forgive lack of detail in these explanations:

Shallow seat tubes neutralize long top tubes. We have shallow seat tubes.

Shallow seat tube angles may somewhat reduce the effective top tube
length--but they certainly don't neutralize the long top tubes found
on the larger Rivendell bikes. For every one degree
shallower(=smaller numerically) the seat tube angle is on a Rivendell
frame compared to someone's current bike, the Rivendell frame will
reduce the effective top tube length by approximately 1 cm. For
instance, if someone has a road bike that has a 73 degree seat tube
angle, a Rivendell frame with a 72 degree seat tube angle will reduce
the effective top tube length by 1 cm.

Higher bars super-'eutralize long top tubes. We're the Cosmos champs in that
 cat.

As bars get higher, your arms become more horizontal, and that makes them
 longer (effectively, not literally).

Well, intuitively that doesn't seem like it would make a very big
difference over the short distances involved when raising a stem. And
my calculations verify that the longer arm effect is trivial. For
example, if I buy an A. Homer Hilsen and I raise my bars 4 cm higher
than on my current bike in order to get the bars even with the top of
the saddle, how will my reach to the bars be affected? There are two
effects:

a) Raising the stem height will bring the bars closer to me by some
horizontal distance. By how much? With a 72.5 degree head tube on the
Hilsen, if I raise the stem 4 cm the bars will get 1.20 cm closer to
me. However if I buy a set of Nitto Noodle handlebars, they have 1 cm
more reach than every road bar listed at Colorado Cyclist (including
the bars on my road bike). So raising the stem height in conjunction
with using Nitto Noodle bars on the Hilsen means the bars will only
get .20 cm closer to me.

In addition, if I just raise the bars 4 cm on my current road bike
which has a 73.5 cm head tube angle, the bars will get 1.14 cm closer
to me. The Hilsen can only do .06 cm better. And with the Nitto
Noodle bars on the Hilsen adding 1 cm of reach, the bars on the Hilsen
will actually be .94 cm further away from me than if I had just raised
the bars on my road bike. That is not the direction I want to go in.

b) Rivendell reader #41 points out that as the bars get higher your
arms get longer (effectively). But by how much? If you wear a size
44 coat (longish arms), and you raise the bars 4cm, my calculations
show that your arms will effectively get longer by .06 cm. If you
have shorter arms, say size 22 coat (impossibly stubby arms), you can
double that--your arms will effectively get longer by .13 cm.

A 67 cm A. Homer Hilsen has a 65 cm effective top tube. My current
road bike has a 62 cm horizontal top tube. I would like to try a
shorter reach and a more upright position to see if that will cure the
lower back and shoulder/neck fatigue I suffer on long rides. How am I
supposed to neutralize the 65 cm top tube on the A. Homer Hilsen? I
don't understand how any of the things you mentioned accomplishes
that.

Ideally, I would like to ride a frame with only a fistful of seatpost
showing and the bars even with the top of the saddle. I think when
only a fistful of seatpost is showing that indicates an expanded
frame or a frame designed with an upright position in mind. According
to my opinion, when a high rise stem is needed to get the bars even
with the top of the saddle, that is an indication that the frame is
sized just like every other road bike sold today.

Thanks for reading,

happy

For 15 years I have manfully resisted the don't worry about tt, st angle
and bar height compensate message from Grant. I asked for a 56-57 cm c-c tt
on my customs and set them up with 8 cm stems and bars 4-5 cm below saddle;
very, very nice. Then I got, seriatim, a medium (17!!) Monocog 29er with a,
what, 24 c-c tt and, a couple of years later, just a couple of months ago,
a 56 cm Sam Hill, with (gad!) a 59 cm tt and (gad!) a 10 cm stem.

I simply raised the bars. On the Monocog they are a good 2-3 cm above the
saddle; on the SH they are about 1 cm above the saddle.

Result? Very nice, and on those two bikes I can ride in the hooks almost
indefinitely, while with the other Rivs and other bikes (8 cm stems, bars 5
cm below saddle) the hooks are wonderful for 5 miles and tolerable for 10
miles (at my usual 25 mph cruising speed).

Conclusion? For bikes on which I want higher bars -- off road, Monocog;
touring, SH -- long tt and high bars are just fine. For fixed gear, urban,
short (30 miles or less) rides, which makes up most of my riding, and the
headwinds we have in high desert, no tree Albuquerque (the horizon is always
80 miles away), I'd insist on a shorter tt.

YM may, will, nay, ineluctibly must vary.

[RBW] headset stack height?

2010-05-08 Thread happyriding
Hi,

I was looking at this picture of a large custom Rivendell with a tall
headset:

http://tinyurl.com/23rzeqm

Does the steerer go all the way up into the spacers? Can you add as
many spacers as you want as long as you have enough steerer length?

Thanks.

[RBW] slowing down

2010-05-08 Thread jandrews_nyc
As some of you know, my wife and I have been planning a cyclotouring
trip from New York City to Montreal with camping in the Adirondacks
and Vermont along the way. I've received a lot of very helpful
information on this list and want to thank everyone who has given me
suggestions. We were slated to start on May 23rd.
Unfortunately my wife broke her tibia and knee on Sunday in an
accident involving a car. She wasn't driving or riding a her bike.
She wont walk for three months and certainly wont be cycling. She had
surgery last night involving pins, screws and plates and is in a lot
of pain. We are trying to stay positive and know she will have a
full recovery with her gaining 95% of movement in her knee back. But
still, it's a bummer. I don't really do the support group thing so I
thought I would share that here.

I haven't tried it either, but I just order myself some Big Apples
today. 26x2.3's

The Big Apples sound perfect for mixed road/trail rides. I can't
stand the sluggishness of knobbies on the road, and the trails near me
don't require too much traction...Big Apples sound perfect. The
Rivideo does make it seem that BAs coupled with some decent bike
handling skills are perfectly adequate for moderate off-roading.

Re: [RBW] headset stack height?

There is no choice. If you have a tall steerer tube, you need the spacers.
If you want less height, you have to cut the steerer and use fewer spacers.

How awful! On the bright side, she is still alive, and you can be
thankful for that. Her next sport is going to be swimming. As soon
as she is able to get around on crutches, get her into a pool. She
can maintain her cardiovascular fitness by swimming laps. Then it's a
matter of rehabbing that darn leg when the doc gives the go ahead.
Cycling will come back fairly quickly. Running will take much longer.

Good luck!
