the 63), the 63 would handle better.  I'm very happy with the 63.  I
have a small handful of seatpost showing - 3 or so, and with the stem
sticking 2 out of the headset, both are level.  The top of the seat
and the crook of the stem are both about 6 above the top tube and the
bike looks perfectly proportioned.  I think if I raise the stem up to
the max, it ends up about 2 above the top of the saddle.  I ride 40c
Schwalbe Marathons and ride the bike mostly for commuting.  Keep in
mind that when you stop and put a foot down at lights, etc. you have
even more standover height because one foot is up on the pedal.

the mtn-bike bar ends are what i mean - or even the little stubby ovals that
bolt on perpendicular, although with the swept back angle either of those might
not really work - not sure.

What is the seat tube angle? I notice that the Brooks seems rather far

Are the curve stays for looks or do they help absorb road shock?

overlap of the two groups, or do the species not typically intermingle.

[RBW] Re: Cork, Tape, and Shellac

2010-05-16 Thread Blindrobert
Patrick,

I will have to dig up the drawing for the ST angle - I am not sure off
the top of my head. I think most of the ugly threadless stem/headset
setups are because so many of the stems come in ugly finishes. I
think matte black looks (generally) terrible on bikes - especially in
the areas that I expect to see polished chrome/stainless/alloy. MORE
POLISHED THREADLESS STEMS, PLEASE!!!

The Brooks is a little forward on its rails, it's just what ended up
being comfortable - this is the first bike I have ever had moustache
bars on, so it was a bit of a guess on stem length, if I ever bother
to switch it out for a shorter one, I will slide the saddle back - for
now it's comfortable.

The curved stays are just something he (josh muir at frances cycles)
does on a lot of his bikes - I think it's just an aesthetic move. I
like them, but I doubt they do anything significant to road shock; the
fat-ish tires this bike was designed for are much more effective than
any relieved stay will ever be!

Bill - the fender was not effective once I got up over 14mph or so - I
recently changed it out to a full size satin aluminum VO fender. I
may crop it again, because I like the look - but it needs to be a good
6 or so longer than the fender in the picture. If I had it to do
over again, I would probably consider horizontal dropouts so that
removing a wheel for a tire change wasn't so hard. That said, I
haven't had a flat yet on this bike. The Rivendell Jack Brown tires
are awesome in that regard - ditto for the ruffy tuffy tires which I
have used on a few long tours and never had a flat!

Ryan - I have been riding fixed gear bikes for 14 years and my knees
have never complained (knock on wood), even my days of brakeless
riding/skidding in NYC.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone!

RS: I met Grant Petersen at a trade show about ten years ago, but
hadn't recalled that until about four years ago when he called me to
write a catalog piece about fork crowns. I sent him three and a half
single-spaced, typed pages on the subject which he edited down to the
piece in the 1993 Bridgestone catalog. It subsequently led to his
desire to have an article on filing; this became the lug article in
the 1994 catalog. Through this all, he had me design a set of ornate
lugs for Bridgestone's road frame. I carved a set from some Nikko lug
blanks, sent them to Japan, and Grant was to have them produced en
masse. The project got shelved because the lugs were said to be just
borderline enough to be too intricate to produce, and definitely too
ginger for the Bridgestone workers to use. The lugs were sent back to
me and stayed in my window for a while, and then they ended up as the
Rivendell road frame lugs, cast in the Orient for Grant to use here.

Indeed... I've been watching this with interest. I'm recently forced
off bikes (ribs/clavicle/lung as a result of a crash) for a while, so
I guess I don't really have the urgency to get into another bike
(there's plenty mental emotional urgency, just no bodily

myself are valid, only not necessarily timely.

RoadieRyan, am I correct in understanding there are unpurchased

personalizable.

Wow. My Brooks Pro on my Riv was purchased in 1976 or 1977 and has
not yet turned into an @55 hatchet. I have weighed around 200 lbs
throughout that time (up to 250 about 20 years ago, but let's face
it, I obviously wasn't riding much then...).

But in those days the Pro's leather was twice as thick as the B.17
and more carefully chosen. It looks to me like the current Pros and
B.17 are cut from the same leather and it is treated differently than
the old days. My Pro was hard as oak for years and took about 3
years to fully break in. Now it's just the most comfortable saddle I
have ever ridden. The leather is about 1/4 thick. I've got one
other Pro from that era and it, too, is very comfortable. My newer
Pros aren't as good- the leather is too soft and stretches too much.
I have a titanium Swift which has really hard leather like the old
ones but the shape is different and very uncomfortable for me.

So I am getting around to suggesting looking for an old, possibly
NOS, Brooks saddle- probably a Pro unless it's just too narrow.

Re: [RBW] Re: What is the level of your XO-1 nostalgia?

2010-05-16 Thread James Warren

$1700 in 2006 is what I paid for the less fancy of the two in Dave Estes'
picture here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/4513929848/

It was almost unused by the original owner. I thought about it, but not too
long; I thought it was worth it, but was taking some risk that it might be too
small.

I set it up carefully, and the size works for me, and the use I get out of it
has more than made it worth it. I think the picture shows that I use it
practically as opposed to showroomey. I've had some really fun rides on that
bike, most recently that outstanding San Diego ride that Esteban organized. The
bike climbs really well and still feels lively (subjective and vague I
realize). For that and several other rides (one a multi-day overnighter with a
tent where it performed flawlessly) that are extremely memorable to me, I am
very happy that I bought the bike and don't regret the pricetag. On the
multi-day ride, a flawed map let us down and we spent the day on a rough dirt
road. Lucky me; it was like we were filming an ad for the bike. I really like
taking it on mixed surface rides.

Now, to keep this on-topic, I agree that if you get to $2000, the Sam Hillborne
is the better choice. But if someone goes for a functional XO-1 and pays a
little bit extra for it, I'm not going to snicker about them as long as they
ride it, because if they are lucky enough to have rides like the ones I've had,
the regret of the few extra hundreds will diminish more and more over time as
the good rides are had.

I really hope they are not treating it with a collector's piece mentality, and
I'll say the same thing about any Rivendell model over the coming decades.

Taking into account inflation an XO-1 would sell for $1750 today. So
I would say this person overpaid alot. I think those Bridgestones are
great bikes but once you hit the price of a new Rivendell it is a no
brainer for me.

I think that the exuberence for the '93 XO-1 is held mainly by the
urban bike nerd. Having personally ridden a m'stach bar, bikes
equipped with Rivendell-supplied parts, and an orange frame or two, my
lust for the XO-1 is pretty low. I certainly do not lust for the
loose bearing bottom bracket and squealing Dia Compe 986 canti's of my
  XO-2.

I still say that if the XO's were not orange, the exuberence would be
  far, far, far lower.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a huge XO fan. But, for my money, I'm headed

I watch with interest just to the extent that it is interesting to see
people willing to pay more than retail for a 17 year old bike. Of
course, getting the equivalent of that bike today would cost even
more, a lot more, but still.

The thing that got me thinking was the title, including the text
Rivendell fans rejoice!. The vibe I have gotten from my short time
on this forum is that there is not a ton of deep seated nostalgia for
the XO-1, even though none of us is all that surprised at XO-1's going
for $1500 to $2000. I don't think many from this forum is rejoicing
at the availability of that particular XO-1 either. Sure, some of us
own one, or have owned one, and like(d) it just fine.

So, I guess my question is: Do you keep your eyes out for
Bridgestones? Which one(s) do you look for? What would you pay
relative to retail to get one? Would you restore it, or resurrect it
   into something else?

For me, I always liked the RB1, and got the opportunity to buy a 1992
basically unridden for $600. I bought it and keep it at a vacation
place where the riding is flat. I'm happy I did. The XO that I am
nostalgic for is my 1993 XO-2, which had dirt drops. It's long gone
but I'd love to get another one of those. I'd probably pay $400 for
   that or a 1994 XO-3. I almost jumped on a 1993 XO-3 on ebay last
month, that went for $300 or so, but I would have ended up replacing
   nearly everything on it.

The Berthoud saddles have the thickest leather i've seen, definitely
worth a look. If you haven't already, it's also worth tying the sides
on one of the saddles to see if that helps. I've done it to all of

[RBW] Another camera to shoot your Riv with

2010-05-16 Thread jose
I've found that the dreamy analog touch of some iphone photography
apps goes well with the dreamy analog touch of my Rivendell. :)

Here are some shots I took today exploring the bayou paths downtown on
my Atlantis:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/southgatephotos/sets/72157623951607973/

Some shots were taken with Hipstamatic and some with ShakeItPhoto.

I think the saying The best camera is the one you got definitely
applies to my iphone. But in addition to the convenience factor,
there's also a fun factor that sometimes trumps all the megapixels of
my fancier cameras.

Maybe I have a liking for that analog look because that's what my
childhood pictures are in, or perhaps its a hardwired preference
similar to liking Impressionist paintings. I dunno, but I dig it.

I realize some of you may scoff at the idea of techy fake analog. I
think GP himself may not even do digital.

But for those you shooting entirely digital yet find the analog look
appealing, here's another option.

Have fun,
-- J.

Like others have said...get an old one. I bought an old NOS B-17 (mid
70's) a couple years back and it is noticably stiffer than the newer
versions. Rock hard but still has that shape of the b-17 that adapts
to the arse instantly...if you are one of those peoples whose arse is
adaptable to the b-17 (does that make any sense?). Or, get a Pro.
I've had several, and sold just as many because they are rock hard. I
guess they break in after awhile (or the arse adjusts), but I don't
have the patience...although I do have a new (old) one on a bike I
haven't ridden yet...will report back in a year.
