I'm very curious how y'all can see out from under those long bills. When I
pull a cap down snugly enough to keep it on my head (I do have thick and
more than shoulder length hair in a pony tail, so my hats have to be firmly
in place) the bill blocks my vision unless I am sitting bolt upright. Even
on the hoods it gets in the way, and this is true even of ordinary cycling
caps with shorter brims. I have very short, 4 cm brims on my caps, which are
either custom made or altered.

So, do you sit bolt upright, or do your caps balance on the tops of your
heads?

No, my forehead is not 1/2 high.

When I lived in the DC area, College Park Bikes in Maryland was one of
my favorite bike shops. You can take the Metro out there from DC.
It's sister shop, Mount Airy Bicycles, is also neat, but is a bit
further from DC, and unless Metro lines have been extended, Mount Airy
Bicycles is not accessible on Metro.

A couple of other nice shops that are not quite as Rivish are City
Bikes in Adams-Morgan and Bicycle Pro Shop in Georgetown.

Enjoy the viist.

[RBW] UPDATE - FS: SS coupled 58cm Rambouillet, SS 57cm Bleriot, wheels, tires, case

2010-06-05 Thread Timothy Whalen
Hello and thanks to those who have been interested and/or purchased.

The 57 cm SS coupled Bleriot is left and I am reducing the price to $850
and will include shipping with insurance in CONUS.

Best,
Tim Whalen
Colorado Springs

Hi,

I am simplifying my bike stable and selling the following SS coupled frames
and supporting stuff. Buyer pays shipping. I'll send a link to pics by
separate email. Please contact me directly if interested. These are my
best guesses at fair prices, if you disagree, please make an offer.

Best,
Tim Whalen
Colorado Springs

*58cm SS coupled Rambouillet frame with headset and fork*. Includes wrench
and lithium grease for couplers. Forest green with some scrapes and
scratches. $1600.

*57cm SS coupled Rivendell Bleriot frame with headset and fork*. Includes
wrench and lithium grease for couplers. Original Bleriot color, with
minimal, but some, scratches/scrapes. $1,000.

*650B wheelset*. 9 speed Ultegra hubs with skewers, Velocity Aerohead rims,
hand built by Anthony at Longleaf cycles in Wilmington, NC. Excellent
shape, maybe 2k miles. $300.

*Pair 650 X 32 Grand Bois Cypes tires *with tubes. Almost new. $80.

*Pair Ruffy Tuffys*. Estimated better than 50% life on these versatile
tires. With tubes, $50.

*Misc. 650B tubes*. All new, five for $20. I have them grouped roughly by
width as if for either the GBs or Ruffys. Some slime, some not.

*SS hard case*. Great protection for your SS coupled bike and easy to use
with wheels and pull handle. Fits airline luggage requirements so I have
never had an additional charge. Includes a set of frame protector foam
tubes cut for a 58cm Rambouillet which I am selling on the Riv list. They
can easily be cut to fit the Bleriot. This is scarred from travel but still
100% functional. New $425, Ill sell for $200.

Thanks for the cool bike shop pictures.

[RBW] My First Longish Ride on the Saluki

2010-06-05 Thread Rob Harrison
It was a gorgeous day in Seattle, and I got out for my first longish
ride on my Saluki, the 50+ mile Lake Washington Loop. I LOVE this bike!

A few thoughts: Everything everyone says about the Rivendell Ride is
true. The bike feels great--smooth, tracks well, turns, climbs and
descends just like I want it to. The Pari-Motos are superb. I'm very
happy with my Shimergo drivetrain (Campy Daytona 10-speed brifters,
Dura-Ace 7800/7803 derailleurs.) Managed up the 3.3 mile Juanita Hill
with the 12-28T cassette, but will still probably fit a Cyclotourist
14-34, along with changing the rear derailleur to a XTR long cage
until I get more fit. The Berthoud saddle was very comfortable, for
having all of 70 miles on it so far.

Here are a few pics from the ride: http://www.flickr.com/photos/robharrison/sets/72157624087848543/
.

And here are a few pics from my *very* first ride, along with info
about the current build: http://www.flickr.com/photos/robharrison/sets/72157624011191725/

I should mention the provenance. The serial number of the bike is
SA01. John Ferguson originally built up the bike. Have a look: http://www.flickr.com/photos/36397...@n06/sets/72157615351530151/
Ron Blumenthal bought it from John, and made a few changes: http://www.flickr.com/photos/14427...@n04/4404261756/in/set-72157623546735456/
. I bought it from Ron. :)

Other stuff still to come: Berthoud composite fenders and a handlebar
bag of some sort. A Nitto Jaguar seatpost. Pondering a set of Frog
pedals. (Heresy I know!) An EDelux light to replace the E6.

I'm pleased as punch with my new bike.

It was a great day. I did the south end of the LW loop on my Sogn.
That's funny--this is the second Saluki formerly owned by John F. to
make its way to Seattle.

That IS funny! Who has the other one?

I've been eyeing the Sogn. Too bad they don't make them any more. Cool
bike.

I really like pari motos on my Saluki. Great ride shots, I was in
Seattle a few weeks ago and enjoyed biking the Burke Gilman. I was on
my Surley long haul trucker, though.

[RBW] Re: Pari-Moto Ride Report

I have ridden my pari motos on gravel paved roads. The pari motos are
fast and handle well. I think they live up to the promotion.

Took the P-Ms out for a second Metric over some very rough roads in addition
to smoother ones. Rode it over gravel as well. No flats, very comfy, got
approving comments from my skinnier tired companions.  Just as fast as my
times 5 years ago on a whippet thin frame with skimpy rubber. And lots more
comfortable.  I ran them at 65 PSI.
