It looks like they snipped the orange at the brake hoods and then continued on with just the single color. It's hard to know for sure (and I haven't seen it in person), but it might be tan cork tape with orange cloth tape. That is so cool, congrats. I have been trying to find a wife bike like that for years. The 650b conversion of her Miyata brought us closer, but outside of the tandem the solution will likely be a custom. I looked long and hard at that Atlantis, but the timing is not right, and I think it was a bit small for my wife, I am glad it is going to be loved. She opted for the old road and made it to the top non-stop. She was so glad to be on the Atlantis and said she'd have been pushing her Trek, even though it's also fitted with very low gearing. The weather was picture perfect and we arrived in San Diego in plenty of time for some wandering about. She's often ready for a short nap after 40 miles but not Friday. After our group explored Little Italy on Friday night, we rode thru the harbor area and caught the Bayside Bike Trail back up Coronado and the ferry back to downtown. My wife couldn't be happier with the Atlantis and personally supervised its loading into the luggage bin for the bus ride home. We took a bit of ribbing about having matching bikes but it's all in good fun. Can I also chime in in favor of V-brakes with Tektro levers? I have had my Hillborne since May built by Rivendell with Deore V-brakes, Noodle bars, and Tektro levers and interruptors. The braking is superb. Loaded touring with tent, sleeping bag, food, clothes, etc, coming down paved roads at 35mph, in the drops, and literally only needing ONE finger on each lever to moderate slowing/stopping perfectly. I had a Bianchi Volpe with short-arm cantis and needed to apply so much pressure in similar situations that my hands ached. The long-arm cantis that Rivendell sells are doubtless much better than the ones that came on my Volpe, but V-brakes are so powerful, so simple, and so easy to adjust that I can't imagine using anything else. In case you don't really like V-brakes (I don't), you can get a fork- crown mounted cable hanger for cantis from Tektro, which will solve the bar adjustment issue. Very slick and eliminates brake squeal, too. Why do you consider the Tektro hanger not compatible with the Nitto mini? I run that set up on the Bombadil and plan on putting on the Hillborne also. [RBW] Correct link wire for front Avid Shorty 4 (older style)?
Howdy folks. I am going to try one of these brakes on the front of my fixie porteur and I'm thinking using a link wire might be a good idea. Alas, they come in 5 different lengths and I have no idea which one is the normal size. Google didn't turn up anything helpful. I may go with a traditional straddle wire and hanger, but I would like to know which link wire is correct just the same. Anybody know? My Oursons came in today. They look just great. I like the Panaracer packaging (heat sealed plastic bag). Minimalist, yet keeps them clean, and I imagine keeps them protected from aging somewhat. Now the question is whether to start riding them right away or keep them packaged up for later? These Oursons could be a good mixed terrain tire, but my East Bay trails get so muddy that I can't really do that type of ride nearby until summer. My Oursons have 1,300 mi (on a Saluki) on them and show very little wear, if any. At 65 PSI, they are a reasonably fast road tire that still has a forgiving nature over chipseal. I have tektro oryx's on my touring bike, which I'm pretty sure have the same basic geometry as the older shortys. I used the 93 degree link wires last time i replaced the cables, and they work fine: http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/BR408Z34-Tektro+Z+Link+Wire.aspx You could probably get away with one of the 82 degree sets as well, which would imitate the function of a shorter/lower straddle cable; i might try that that on another set i recent picked up for another bike but have yet to install. Thanks! I got more compliments on the bike since I put on the white accents last spring than I have in all the years I've owned it. The superflash mount--I just ran a brazeon/waterbottle screw though the hole for the screw that mounts the quick release mount to the seatpost clamp. Hole was a little small but it's plastic so the bolt cut threads as I turned it in. It works okay but tends to rotate down over time... Thanks Jeremy I think you're right that they are generally similar. I ran into this a few years ago and somehow came to the conclusion that the 82mm/B version was correct, but since I couldn't remember how exactly I decided that it seemed like asking again was a good idea... Based on Sheldon's info (and if I understand it), the shorter cable should be a bit better as the angle on these brakes is a bit less than the 90* ideal so I will probably go with the 82mm. I was originally thinking that with a front rack it is harder to keep an eye on things, so the link wire would add some safety, but with a fender the straddle cable can't drop into the tire anyway so it would be for ease/convenience... +1 on V brakes with the Tektro road levers. I have them set up with some Avid V brakes on my Handsome Devil. Overall I still prefer sidepulls for set up and adjustment but I like the V's over the Canti's. V brakes had their place in the evolution of braking IMO. For big knobby tired bikes( 2.3 inches+) they were better than poorly adjusted canti's. On those same MTB bike they have been replaced by disc brakes almost exclusively. A well adjusted good quality cantilever brake is just as powerful and is orders of magnitude better looking. I have to disagree with some of the statements. V-brakes are just easier not to screw up during setup (fewer adjustments, fewer things to setup wrong), thats really the only major advantage, there is a small leverage benefit but canti's have better modulation in general. If you setup Canti's properly and run the right brake pads and proper short pull levers they will stop as well as any cable actuated rim brake will maybe even as good as cable discs. I have bikes that run Canti's that you can lock up the wheels with 1 finger. I have also used V-brakes that sucked. The trick is older Canti's can be a pain to setup right, Im talking XT cantilever brakes here or similar. Or really any kind that uses the plain non-threaded post mount brake pads, except the 90's Avid Cantilever brakes those are the best for setup ever. Most of it is about geometry though. You have to have the Straddle cable setup right and then have to have the brake pads hitting the rim at 90 degrees and toed in, most of the poorly performing Canti brakes are not adjusted to the correct geometry. Proper setup of Canti Brakes is a bit of a lost art these days. Nowadays the Tektro CR720 Cantilever Brakes are just about as easy to setup as V brakes, mostly due to the fact that they use regular V- brake style brake pads. The only thing more fiddly on these is setting up the straddle cable correctly. The Pauls would also be just as easy to setup right, or again any canti brake that uses the threaded V brake brake pads. anyway thats my 2 cents. Basically every improvement in bicycle components design over the last two decades has been to make build ups faster. They may or may not improve things on the bike, usually neutral at best. Consider the following: V-brakes: check outboard BB bearings: check threadless headsets: check compact frames: check All these are fine and good, and don't hurt anything, but are really unnecessary. They let a factory put more bikes out and let the shops assemble them faster (with less customer complaints). The problem is that they're marketed as improvements which they aren't for the end user. And they make perfectly good parts and designs outdated, which bugs most of us here. My $.02 for the evening. You have to have the Straddle cable setup right and then have to have the brake pads hitting the rim at 90 degrees and toed in, most of the poorly performing Canti brakes are not adjusted to the correct geometry. Proper setup of Canti Brakes is a bit of a lost art these days. Nowadays the Tektro CR720 Cantilever Brakes are just about as easy to setup as V brakes, mostly due to the fact that they use regular V- brake style brake pads. The only thing more fiddly on these is setting up the straddle cable correctly. The Pauls would also be just as easy to setup right, or again any canti brake that uses the threaded V brake brake pads. anyway thats my 2 cents. I love 'em. I used them once last week and again today. Today's use was an utterly continuous one hour light-to-moderate rain. Result: dry shoes with only slightly trickly damp ankles. That's the gold standard for me. In general they are a great compromise between protection and convenience. There may be somewhat superior solutions for people who have skinny shoes. In particular, for me, they're pert nigh perfection. They actually completely cover my 11.5 Keens! There's enough airflow under them that my feet don't get extra damp. And I can put the Splats on just by bending at the waist and lifting each foot (consecutively, not concurrently!). No need to find dry land to sit on. As the photos show, I can carry them easily. And after tonight's ride home I know they work in a good solid hour of rain. Basically, I had a Splats-shaped void in my commuting life. So I'm very happy with them. [RBW] Another Lady and her Riv
In the vein of Doug's A Lady and Her Atlantis post, I did a little jaunt around the city with a friend of mine and her new-to-her Bleriot. The bike was the one that Gino posted on here not too long ago. My friend had been looking for an upgrade from her old Raleigh mixte and early 90's Gary Fisher mountain bike. I guess in a certain way, the Bleriot outfitted with Jitensha flat bars and CdlV/Ourson tires, is a logical progression. In any event, she loves it and soon will be joining my friends and I on next season's S240s. And killing us on the climbs, I'm sure. I would agree with the brakes thing. A canti and V brake have exactly the same mechanical stopping power. The issue is setup. It is also cable routing in that liniar pull brake has fewer issues with the cable placement and with articulated frames. Tha t said, I replace a set of Suntour XC-Pro canti's on my Sam because I could not get pads for them at the time and the Avid didgit 7 liniar pull brake stops just amazingly well. You have to have the Straddle cable setup right and then have to have the brake pads hitting the rim at 90 degrees and toed in, most of the poorly performing Canti brakes are not adjusted to the correct geometry. Proper setup of Canti Brakes is a bit of a lost art these days. Nowadays the Tektro CR720 Cantilever Brakes are just about as easy to setup as V brakes, mostly due to the fact that they use regular V- brake style brake pads. The only thing more fiddly on these is setting up the straddle cable correctly. The Pauls would also be just as easy to setup right, or again any canti brake that uses the threaded V brake brake pads. anyway thats my 2 cents. This spring I bought two used Sugino XD2 triples advertised on this list to put on a Hunqapillar and a Rawland Drakkar i knew we'd be getting in the fall. I'm still waiting on the Hunqapillar, but I took out the crankset to build up the Drakkar that arrived last weekend to find that it had been filed down on the inside. My fault, for not asking for photos beforehand, I suppose, but I'm wondering if it's safe to use. I contacted the seller and he said he didn't know it had been filed down. Comparing it to my other, perfectly intact XD2, it looks like about 3-4 mm has been filed off the inside and a little bit into the square hole has been filed away as well meaning that a lot less surface area is contacting the surface area than would usually do so (that's my guess at least). We put it on and it seems to fit snug for riding around town, but I can't decide whether it would hold up to harder riding (the rider is ~185 lbs). I know we should just buy another one, but we're already scraping the bottom of the barrel to build these bikes up so if I can safely make use of my $80 spent then all the better.
