[RBW] Re: 650b All Rounder

2011-02-01 Thread Roy Yates
My experience is roughly the same as Tim's. While the chainstay and
fork clearance looks to be more than enough for wide 650B tires, my
stumbling block has been the canti brakes. My preliminary measurements
indicated that none of the canti's I own has enough vertical
adjustment to reach the 650B rim.

Can anybody recommend a canti brake that has enough vertical
adjustment so that it can reach the 650B rim using canti posts
designed for 26 inch?

At the moment, I have Avid Shortys on the bike which I don't love, so
I'd be happy to switch to a canti that is 650B compatible

Thanks,
...Roy
BTW My All-Rounder is definitely 1-2mi/hr slower than my other
roadbikes, (even if I run 1.25in tires) but sometimes that's what a
ride calls for.

He was very bullish about it and I corresponded with him about the

it.  Ron said he had trouble keeping the 26 version over 12-15 mph but with
650B wheels it was much faster.  With 26 x 1.25 Paselas I find my A/R is as
fast as any of my other bikes and I really like how it handles, so I never
 made the switch.

2011-02-01 Thread RonLau
I have done it before,

http://cyclofiend.com/cc/2005/cc006-ronlau0505.html

You have to use Tektro Oryx which has enough adjustment for it. If
you do like this better, you may want to invest on a set of
Paul MotoBMX.

Some may complain about the higher bottom bracket height, but I am use
to higher BB height in general, so I don't really care.

In case you are those who believe lower BB height, you may want to
read this.

2011-02-01 Thread Thomas Nezovich
Roy, this has been covered in the past on this list or on the 650B list so a
search of archives should disclose those cantis that have more adjustability.
I have an old, cheap pair of shijmanos (Altus model) that do reach up enough to
reach 584 from 559. The real solution is to get some Paul Moto BMX V-brakes.
I found some used on ebay for not too much ( but then I used to look
constantly for these very items). This year my Atlantis (56 cm with 559
wheels) will be used some of the year with some new 650b wheels I will build.
Later in the summer the touring 559 wheels will be back on for a tour down the
west coast.

2011-02-01 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Ron: Thanks for the Dave Moulton article about BB height. Grant has many
times made the case that a bike with a lower BB has some handling advantage,
which I never fully understood, and, since it came from Grant, I never
questioned the wisdom. In recent years, however, I have had quite a bit of
experience with higher BB bikes, and have come to slightly prefer the higher
BB (feels more stable, easier to go no-handed, easier to run over stuff). Of
course, I live in Minnesota where the terrain and road layout is generally
different than it is in Walnut Creek. Perhaps a daily diet of steep, winding
roads would change my tune.

[RBW] Re: 650b All Rounder

2011-02-01 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I did this with my early 80s Specialized Stumpjumper, and I concluded it was
a bad idea on that bike. Ultimately, I went back to 26 for the greatly
increased variety of suitable tires. I used the Paul Motolite brakes (not
worth the $$$ IMO), but it could probably be done with other cantilever
brakes. In my experience, V-brakes tend to have more adjustment, generally.
You need only a half-inch of upward adjustment, and I'm just guessing Grant
designed the bike around having the pads closer to the bottom of the slot
for typical cantilevers. My sense is that brakes are not likely to be much
of a stumbling block.

Re: [RBW] Re: 650b All Rounder

2011-02-01 Thread Bruce
You can do lots of things with brakes. I purchased a bike that Ed Braley
originally converted from 700 to 650B, and then for fun, moved the brake pads
in
the RBW sold Tektro 556s all the way down and ran 559s on it successfully. The
ride was fine, but steering was negatively affected by the smaller wheels so I
put t back to 650B.

[RBW] Re: Betty Foy questions

2011-02-01 Thread grrlyrida
I'm planning on buying a Betty too. I wanted the red hetres with the
honjos. From the description on Rivbike it says what Sam can do so can
Betty. Both descriptions state that they can take wheels up to 40mm
with fenders. Yet I see many Sam with hetres and honjos.

But from what I'm hearing for all of you is that Betty may not do the
same?

Has anyone tried the hetres and honjos on the Betty? Is it the extra
stay that is causing the clearance problems?

On Jan 28, 4:11 pm, Rene Sterental orthie...@gmail.com wrote:

Jan recommends, and then the question is can everything work with
Hetres and narrower Honjo fenders or SKS fenders... maybe. IIRC, the
largest Honjo fenders that fit are 47mm, so the fit between them and
the Hetres may not be as good.

[RBW] Re: Helmet Cameras Capture Bad Driving

2011-02-01 Thread Jim Cloud
I just watched the video again and didn't hear the cyclist banging on
the side of the van. I guess if I was being crowded off the road by a
panel van (with the driver on the ride side of the vehicle) I'd
certainly be likely to try to get the driver's attention in any way
practical. I don't think cyclists should be so deferential that they
become road kill.
