Re: [RBW] Re: Bags

2011-02-09 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Speaking of bags, does anyone make a saddlebag of about the same
capacity as the Junior that will attach nicely to the rails of a
saddle without Brooks loops? (I do know about the bolt on loops but I
hate them. The VO ones are far, far FAR better than the diabolic Cyclo
loops, though, whose only merit is to give a convincing explanation by
way of example of why British manufacturing was completely swept away
by more intelligent operations.)

Let's seeon Saturday, I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt and this
morning watched most of the neighbors scraping frost off their windshields.
Since the new year, we've been enjoying a pretty static high pressure zone
overhead, which tends to keep the rains away. But, two weeks from now, we
could be talking about record rains.

Couple o' ride buddies have writeups on the 300K:
JimG's 2007 ride was under challenging conditions -
http://tinyurl.com/jimg-300k2007

Carlos has ridden it a few times, too -
http://bike.duque.net/brevets.htm

Common wisdom would say be ready for rains - fenders, appropriate layers,
that sort of thing. When it rains, chilling is a very real threat, and
depending upon where the winds are coming from, it can be challenging. As we
like to say, the SF Bay Area is the Queen of the Microclimates, so you can
hit a variety of temps during the day. If you hit good weather, it'll feel
like summer, most likely, given what conditions are like your way.

I've not done the 300K, so I don't have specific advice for that ride. The
SFRandonneurs are a fine bunch. Hope that helps a little.

[RBW] Pasela options?

2011-02-09 Thread Frederick, Steve
Anyone had an opportunity to compare the new hypertex casing that's being
offered in Soma's version of the Pasela with the standard and tourguard Pasela,
both for ride quality and actual width/size? (I'm thinking that, since the new
650b version is narrower with the hypetex, that the 700c version might be as
well)

I'm hoping it rides similarly to the standard Pasela with the flat protection
of the tourguard and maybe offers a perfect size for my Rambouillet with
fenders... B-) I'd just go with the 32 but if it's a couple of mm's narrower
than marked, I might be able to squeeze the 35 in there.

Thanks, Steve Frederick, East Lansing MI

[RBW] Road Trip to Tennessee and Maybe Georgia!

2011-02-09 Thread AmiSingh
Tonight, over a pitcher of Detroit's finest brew, Ghetto Blaster, a
friend and I decided to take a road trip down south so we could have
an epic cycling adventure. Things have been a little rough recently
and considering the 4*F weather weare having in Michigan there's no
chance at getting a long ride in.

So I need your guidance and advice on good paths, trails, food spots
and anything else you can think of between those two states. Odds are
we'll be driving down to Atlanta - where it's supposed to be sunny
with highs close to the 60 degree mark all weekend long - yay! :)

Thanks in advance for your help!

[RBW] Re: Seeking Comments: Mark's Bar vs. Noodle Bar

2011-02-09 Thread MichaelH
I have the same Cinelli bar, which hasn't been used in a few years,
but I just reinstalled it on my Trek 626. My impression is much like
Patricks. I ride at the back of the drops a lot and that bar is quite
good for that. On the other hand they feel tight when I move my
largish hands into the hook. But all in all a pretty good bar, but
there is a reason so many of us have migrated over to noodles. Most
comfortable for long rides.

[RBW] Re: Brand V Grab Sack

2011-02-09 Thread EricP
It was. I got it. Just probably a bit obscure for most of this
list. (As would be most of modern/pop culture).

Have the Grab Sack aka Murse (man's purse). Don't ride with it, but
do use it on a daily basis for carrying stuff to work. Fits a coffee
mug, Kindle, camera and iPod just fine.

Probably would work on the bike, but personally hate carrying stuff on
myself while riding. That's what my half million bike bags are for.

[RBW] 65cm A Homer Hilsen PICS

2011-02-09 Thread Dave Craig
Hi, Folks

I finally got around to posting pics of my Hilsen. This bike replaced
the 64cm Atlantis I sold to another list member. I took some of the
ideas I liked about the set up on the Atlantis and I used those parts
on the Hilsen:

Indexed 9 speed Shimano Dura-ace DT shifters
Ultegra front and rear derailleurs
12-28 rear gearing
48/36/26 Sugino Crankset
Maroon Cloth HB Tape
Acorn Bag
Brown Hooded Cane Creek levers
VO pedals with Power Grips
Jack Brown Tires

It's pretty much perfect for the mountainous road rides around here.
As I get the cash together, I'll probably switch out the wheels for
something with a little more bling than the functional XT hubs and
Salsa Delgado Cross 32h rims.

[RBW] Pasela options

2011-02-09 Thread SteveF
Anyone had an opportunity to compare the new hypertex casing that's
being offered in Soma's version of the Pasela with the standard and
tourguard Pasela, both for ride quality and actual width/size? (I'm
thinking that, since the new 650b version is narrower with the
hypetex, that the 700c version might be as well)

I'm hoping it rides similarly to the standard Pasela with the flat
protection of the tourguard and maybe offers a perfect size for my
Rambouillet with fenders... B-) I'd just go with the 32 but if it's a
couple of mm's narrower than marked, I might be able to squeeze the 35
in there.

That's some serious message-mixing there.

My sweetie and I each got Grab sacks last summer during a visit to
RBWBikeLoveHQ.Sweetie uses hers regularly as a purse. I use mine for
lots of urban riding when a larger bag is Simply Too Much. Mine holds
a sack lunch, a windshell and novel -- which is just about all I want
to take along on long solo rides out in the country. A lovely bag.

[RBW] Re: Vintage Grant Bicycle Great Condition

2011-02-09 Thread William
Autheticity of the above claim is guaranteed because it was claimed by
Doug Peterson, twin BROTHER of Grant Peterson. What few people know,
is that the Caprice family experienced a great deal of persecution in
the mid-70's. Both Grant and Doug Caprice were frequently made fun of
at school with the taunt "Hey, Caprice! Why are you so Capricious?"
The torment eventually caused the family to change their family name

[RBW] Re: Brand V Grab Sack

2011-02-09 Thread William
In the Progressive Insurance commercial the husband and wife are
shopping for insurance. The Progressive spokesperson comments on how
the man is carrying the wife's purse, to which the wife haughtily
replies "It's a European handbag" and the husband says "It was a gift"
and nods his eyes in the wife's direction, indicating that he has to
not only use it but pretend to like it since the wife gave it to
him.

I can only assume that one using that reference to a Brand-V grabsack
would be stating that the grabsack is not as useful as it claims to be
and the only reason anybody would use one is because it was a gift.

Or maybe he didn't mean to say that the grabsack is lame or even
effeminate, but only was making the cultural reference to the
commercial. Maybe he just meant that users of the grabsack might have
to explain to people what it is and what it's for, like the dude in
the commercial.

Back to your original statement, though, Seth. You don't get the
point of the reference, and neither do I.

[RBW] ride suggestions, of any type, near placerville?

2011-02-09 Thread erik jensen
Hi All,

Wondering if anyone can suggest some good routes for this time of year near
placerville? I'm open to onroad, off, or both. Would need snow 5" or less
since I'm not looking for an epic out there. My ideal would be something
that would take me up into the sierras... It looks like I'll be out there
this weekend, and would love to take advantage of it.

Thanks for your help~

I bought a grab sack as a gift for someone and they love it.
functional, attractive and simple, they use it daily.

They also loved the vegan-ness of it.

One of the dangers with cottage industries selling through their own
websites is they sometimes decide to write their own copy. There may
be some metal fabricators who can write good marketing copy. For the
most part, the two do not overlap.

Probably they should have just stuck with their first instinct and
said something along the lines of - Dude! This is one cool looking
flat pedal!

It lowers the bottom bracket only in the sense that you have to lower your
saddle to maintain the same leg extension.

_Why_ that could possibly be a percieved benefit to the target market is
beyond me. And that's just the first sentance. The piffle continues

Really, really makes me once again appreciate the forthright aspect of GP's

The pastor at my school is selling his beautiful Rivendell and has
asked me to help him sell it.
Here is the craigslits link:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/bik/2201630268.html

The bike is in great shape and he keeps it maintained by a shop in San
Jose, where he lives.
The bike was purchased from Pedal Revolution in the Mission, a non
profit bike shop that offers youth programs for kids in my
neighborhood.
In addition to the images on the CL post, I have a few detailed images
as well.
For payment, you can paypal me, or write a check/cash directly to him.
The bike is currently at work (the school), Grace Cathedral, in Nob

If you want to check it out, let me know.
If you want me to ship it, I'll do that too, I'll let you know what
the actual shipping cost is at the UPS.
Let me know if you have any technical questions.

[RBW] Re: New (to me anyway) and quite flat platform pedals ...

2011-02-09 Thread JoelMatthews
I am not familiar with Canfield.

Currently, I am using the more White Industry platform pedals on my
commuter bike. The Whites are more expensive and require either a toe
clip, a half clip, or power grips. But they are wonderfully smooth
pedals, are very easy to clean and grease, and look great.

If the Canfields are anywhere near as smooth as the Whites (or the MKS
Custom Nuevos), they may be a viable alternative.

I do agree there are less expensive options out there that probably
function as or nearly as well. Personally, I do not mind paying a
little more to the mom and pop or for Canfield - bro and bro - if the
product is good quality. The Whites certainly are top quality.
Somewhat curious whether these live up to White standards.

That's a lot of money for reduced slippage.
Of course, if you're looking for a dwnhill pedal these may be the
ticket. Otherwise, really, just about anything flat will work fine.
I race on Crank Bros. 5050XX (sealed bearing version, replaceable pins
and plates) without shin guards and have yet to take a significant
core sample of my leg. The pedal is just a big, wide, happy platform
for my foot.
For anything else, any ordinary BMX-type flat pedal will work fine for
all but the biggest feet, and costs far less. I like the MKS platform

2011-02-09 Thread bassandbike
Great information everyone. Thank you so much.

Ami (and John, if you're watching), with your Acorns, do you ever
stuff a map in the top and use it Rando style? I have some pretty
crazy mixed terrain rides coming up and I will need access to a cue
sheet. Wondering specifically how useful the mapcase functionality
is from that distance

There is also a super tall Berthoudbut not sure I can stretch for
the 400 or so bucks it will take to put the thing on (with racks,
supports, etc).

This list rules. Such a wealth of information.

[RBW] Fwd: YouTube - Cherry Pie 2011--The Movie

2011-02-09 Thread Eric Norris
Video from a criterium race in Napa this past weekend. Not much Riv content
(steel bkes were as scarce as hen's teeth), but it features my stepson, and
up-and-coming young racer. Enjoy.

[RBW] Re: 650B Wheels for Touring

2011-02-09 Thread Angus
I've had 32 spoke MTB wheels survive for years and had a 32 spoke 26"
Touring wheel "notch" the spokes as the cross. Changed the rear wheel
to 36 spokes and have not had a problem since.

Weight 150, carry 20-40 lbs of gear.
