Re: [RBW] MKS sylvan bearings

2011-04-09 Thread omnigrid
if you bring a single bearing to any bike shop, they can bust out the park
spoke ruler and provide the exact bearing size. they will be metric.

next time you buy/order bike stuff, add a park spoke ruler -- they come in
handy and they're only, what, five bucks?

your pedal will be fine with one less bearing.

[RBW] checking interest 54cm canti saluki F/F

Is there any interest out there for a 54cm saluki frame and fork?
This is one of the first official run that had the super nice fork
bend, double taper seat stays and cantilever brakes. Paint and decals
are like new except for a few places where it chipped from use (drop
outs, eyelets, etc) $1400 with synergy wheels xtr hubs and hetres.

reply off list please.

An 80% dirt commute! That's living it up nicely.

We've got a pretty similar hunqa-style setup. I recently took off
fenders and racks so it'd be more manageable in rough dirt too.
I really like the Sam this way (naked, that is).

Re: [RBW] Re: New bicycling shoes from Timberland

2011-04-09 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Quite nice -- I wouldn't mind some in black.

I owned a pair of a particular AE model (forget name; pointy,
thin-soled, wingtip) dating back pre-'80s (I got it at a thrift store)
and a few years later (mid-'80s) I got the same model in current form.
Big difference in quality of workmanship, tho' the materials are as
good -- I still own the latter and wear them for weddings and
funerals. (The quality of work is quite good on the later ones but not
of the stellar quality of the old ones.)

Of which speaking: you can't easily find nowadays good quality,
hard-finish leather shoes -- the kind that take a high polish: it's
all soft leather. I have several pairs of decent boots, including a
Macona and various L--- forget what it is -- want to say "Laprade" but
; big name; and while those are nice, the uppers are that soft-ish
leather while an exotic multi-hundred dollar pair I got from my
brother (from a thrift store) has that hard finish leather that shines
up so nicely.

Patrick Moore, who just last week found a nice Joseph Aboud
wool/cotton zip-top, faux-turtle pullover in his size at GW for <$5.

Re: [RBW] MKS sylvan bearings

2011-04-09 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Bearing numbers are like federal taxes: honest approximations are
fine. My own approach to tight and harsh MKS bearings on cheap MKS
models (tho' those on the lovely RKS track pedals I owned were better
than those of the old Nuovo Record quills or the new 2008 Dura Ace
cliplesses that I also I had) is to fill with oil (Phil is good) and
ride and let the natural friction between the less than perfect
surfaces act as grinding medium.

[RBW] Re: New bicycling shoes from Timberland

2011-04-09 Thread RonaTD
The Timberland bike shoe reminds me of the Allen-Edmonds Mitchell
(http://www.sierratradingpost.com/i/2251V,02,_Allen-Edmonds-Evans-
Shoes-Lace-Ups-For-Men.html)
I have two pairs, dark brown and black. Grant tipped me to them last
year, and luckily the AE HQ is just up the road from here and they had
some left.

As to Patrick's question, Allen-Edmonds still makes dress shoes of the
highest quality. The Mitchell isn't on a par with their handmade dress
shoes, but they are still very good. You can view it as a shame that
they put their name on cheaper stuff, or you can view it as a good
thing that helps them stay in business making the quality stuff, too.
It's pretty easy to tell which is which - you get what you pay for!

Talking about quality, I had a pair of Timberland boat shoes that I
bought around 1980 that lived an extraordinarily long life, including
3 summers teaching sailing at a place with a dirt/gravel lot. (I
commuted by bike pretty often, so they were biking shoes, too. Had
some nice black lines straight across the soles.) Sebago's typically
died in less than a season on that job.

The Mitchell is exactly what I wanted for commuting shoes. I can wear
them with anything shy of a full business suit, and I haven't carried
a suit on my bike in fifteen years. They are extraordinarily
comfortable. I wear them a lot, even when I'm not biking. I've always
found that shoes that lace all the way down the foot seem to work well
for my low-volume, high-arch shape.

[RBW] Wind! (Again)

2011-04-09 Thread PATRICK MOORE
The NWS advised "gusts to 60" so I had to go out; just 11 1/2 miles to
PO, grocery store and back, but it was something, 'specially on the
Fargo with its fat tires and, currently, big, boxy Dutch panniers. I
took it because it has those derailleur thingies. On the way back,
down a hill that, in a calm, will let you coast at 20 mph, I was in
the 36X26 at 8-10 mph directly into the wind.

Anyway, rather fun with the option of gears but I am glad that even
for ABQ, this sort of wind is rather rare.

[RBW] MKS sylvan bearings

2011-04-09 Thread MobileBill
I repacked MKS sylvan touring pedals, which eliminated a host of
noises, scrapes and annoyances I lived with too long on my saluki. I
highly recommend buying a pedal cap wrench with the sylvan pedals
(which are sensible and versatile platform pedals, and one of a
decreasing number of decent pedals compatible with power grips). Have
proudly mastered tightening that annoying recessed cone properly. But
have created a new problem. I discovered 21 bearings in one pedal, 22
bearings in the other. Nevermind who dropped the bearing (I still
believe it came that way). Does anyone know the size of these
bearings(they're not one-eighth and I wonder if they might be metric?)
Does it matter being a bearing short (this is a pedal after all, not a
wheel hub and it certainly FEELS smooth with the new grease, a lot
smoother than it was)? Should I worry at all with Sheldon's old
warning that all bearings ought to be replaced at once (this is a
pedal after all)?

It's true that most freewheels can be removed with a big wrench. Most
of the freewheels that are too much for a wrench can be removed by a
vise. Those that cannot be removed with a vice are few. If it's been
on for 10+ years and was used a lot, I'd guess that Minh will need a
vice, but it's only a guess.

[RBW] Riv Rally East Countdown - Only 4 weeks away!!!

2011-04-09 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Riv Rally East is nearly upon us! All are welcome to join us, not
just Riv owners (Fri night, May 6 through Sun May 8 in Wellsboro PA /
Pine Creek Gorge). If you haven't already, you will need to make
hotel reservations soon... The link again to the Sherwood Motel is
www.sherwoodmotel.org. The link to the Wellsboro lodging site is
http://www.wellsboroweb.com/wwdirectory/lodging.shtml. And if you
want to know more about the rides in the area, here's the link to a
great website, with LOTS of information, including links to Wellsboro
information: http://pinecreekbikerides.com/.

I'll post more detailed info in the coming weeks on exact meeting
times, planned routes, etc., but for now the planned agenda is:

Fri May 6 - Arrive Wellsboro (I plan to arrive late afternoon/early
evening). I will be staying at the Sherwood.
Sat May 7 - Meet at Wellsboro Village Green (time TBD), embark on 41
mile grand loop of the Pine Creek Gorge.
Sat evening - Eat, drink and be merry
Sun May 8 - Meet at Wellsboro Village Green (time TBD), choose one of
several nice area loops (I will choose a shorter 20-30 mile loop); we
can remain together as one big ride, or split into smaller groups.
Sun afternoon - Depart Wellsboro

The size of our group (ie folks who either confirmed, or expressed a
strong interest) is roughly 30 strong!!!

BULLETIN BOARD:

Noah Schabacker from NYC is looking for a ride to the Rally. Anyone
from NYC with room for Noah? Noah, you're welcome to drive with me if
you can make it out to New Brunswick or Princeton NJ (by train?).
Anyone who can help out Noah, please contact him at
iprufr...@gmail.com

Anne Paulson and any other out of town travelers considering being
East for the Rally, let me know if you are planning to join, and if
you need a ride from the NJ area. Also please let me know if you need
a bike (or feel free to bring your folding bike). There was at least
one person on this forum who indicated a willingness to offer up one
of his Rivs for someone who needs a bike. I have a few non-Riv (but
very Riv-ish) bikes I am also happy to loan.

Michael Hechmer - I don't think there's camping in the immediate
vicinity of Wellsboro; but check out the Wellsboro lodging link above
for potential leads... Hotel/B&B will be you best bet, I'm afraid.

GRANT P and the RIV FOLKS in Walnut Creek: While it may not be
practical, we'd sure love to have you join us for the rally. If
there's any chance any one of you is interested, I'm confident we can
arrange for a bike and to get you hooked up with ground
transportation. If interested, kindly let me know.

FINALLY - Anyone else doing the NYC Five Boro Tour on May 1? (Please
let me know).

Peace,
BB

[RBW] Re: For the Love of Old Parts...

2011-04-09 Thread Jim Cloud
I've never experienced any problems removing a freewheel (with the
proper freewheel tool) and a large adjustable wrench. I have a Sears
"Craftsman" 12 inch adjustable wrench which does the trick every
time. As long as the freewheel tool is tightened down with the
skewer, it's not going to slip. Campagnolo made a freewheel wrench,
specifically for the two-prong Regina type freewheel, and this tool is
12 inches in length (I happen to own one). Team mechanics used this
tool to remove innumerable freewheels, I don't think that it's
necessary to use a bench vise, and I never owned one.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Dureme

2011-04-09 Thread William
Jason

My Hillborne is an Orange one. I bought it from Riv in December of
2009, and at the time, I think there were some Greens still around in
some sizes, but there were no Green 56's.

After another pass through my taxes, I've decided that a $150 set of
tires for my Hillborne (for which I already have 7 reasonably
appropriate pairs of tires) would be an extravagance. Maybe later
this spring

What are the 7?

1. IRC Mythos knobbies
2. Pasela 37's
3. Jack Browns
4. Soma New Express 32s
5. IRC Tandem 700x30
6. Continental 700x28
7. Roly Poly

OK, I admit I'll probably never run the Conti's or the Roly Polys on
the Hillborne, and the 37 Paselas are on the tandem at the moment. :)

Bill , Is yours an older green or a new orange Hillborne.
I remember when I was at RBW, Keven telling me that the new oranges
had a bit more clearance at the chain stays.
I purchased the last 56cm guy in the house. So, I know that as far as
Hillbornes go...my bike has less room for big tires.
Still, I'd like to know that the 50mm Duremes are on a Synergy rim.
They may be great as a cush, fast tire with no fender.
Currently I'm running 37mm Pasela TG under 50mm Berthoud / SKS
fenders.

Lots of nice cycling posters at:

though perhaps not the particular photos you linked.

Re: [RBW] Re: New bicycling shoes from Timberland

2011-04-09 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Curious: are J&M and at least some Timberlands still of the same
quality they were 20 years ago? I remember that even in the early '90s
quality of, say, Allan Edmonds had gone down and I know that the name
Timberland now covers junk make in China or Thailand (cheap leather,
fabric lining). Ditto of course the Brooks Brothers brand and others
like Coach and Gap and Nautica and and and -- f***ing branding and
brand expansion. I shop at Goodwill and can afford to be picky. (Tho'
I did spend large $$$ back in the '80s on expensive and new clothing
and shoes -- my yuppie, WDC days).

Somewhat like Masi and Bertin and other good old names covering if not
junk, then certainly lower end, cheap labor made goods with little
relation to the originals.
