Hey Steve,

I didn't mean to suggest any superiority amongst racks.I just
prefer the versatility of the Mark's rack.  I bought mine years ago
for front use on my Ram.  Since then it has served good time on an
Atlantis, a Bleriot , a QB, and a Karate Monkey..  Front and rear.  I
don't think it's superior at anything.  It's just decent to good at
more things than most racks out there.  I like that kind of value.

My friend is an EE and he constructed it; otherwise I have no clue.
The circuit board was designed for the DIYer using readily available
components, and as such it's not so compact (compared to the Schmidt,
BM and E3 LED dynamo lights on the market).  This requires housing
the circuitry in a separate (in this case) tube.  The output of this
light is awesome... super bright.  There is no standlight so I would
always use a small battery-LED light as an auxiliary for when I stop.

For a DIY dynamo light, this one is pretty amazing with the amount of
light it produces.  There are 4 LEDs (CREE) packed together on one
tiny chip.

Am late to this thread - that's a great looking bike.  Even has the
original pedals.  Kept switching back to them in my old mountain bike
days.  I wanted one of those Rockhoppers oh so bad when they came
out.  Ended up buying a year or two older Stumpjumper frame instead
and building it up.  Always am jealous when I see those bikes.

And Bobby - like always, your Stumpy is a beautiful bike.

 came down today. Derailleurs are Shimano Deer Head, Mostly Shimano
 components: Canti's and levers, Unishift thumb shifters, hubs and
 pedals, Avocet Saddle, Specialized cranks, Bullmoose is not labeled,
 but I believe Nitto was doing some stuff for the big S.

 Anyway, I removed the dried out tires and threw on some fat IRC Duro
 Metro slicks for the time being. I plan to pick up some skinwall MTB
 tires, add a Brooks B-17, a big saddle bag, and hit the dirt!!

Another big part to the Marks Rack versatility is that is can be mated
to a platrack.  Four Nitto front racks (two Marks, two Mini Fronts) in
my stable.  One Platrack means any of those four bikes can be set up
Porteur style at the drop of a hat.  That reminds me..it's getting
close to the time to pick which bike is going on the Angel Island S24O
in two weeks.

I agree that the Mark's Rack versatility is a big plus (it can even be
installed on the rear of the bike).  The VO front rack certainly would
work well with a bike that has the appropriate bosses on the forks.
The amount of adjustabilty of the VO rack is, however, somewhat
limited.

There's also an advantage to the Mark's Rack, in my opinion, since
Rivendell has made bags that are specifically designed to fit that
rack (e.g. Li'l Loafer, Sackville TrunkSack).

And the build is complete.  The clincher wheelset isn't ready yet, but
I did one shake-down ride on the tubulars, and was satisfied enough
with the fit to wrap twine and shellac the bars.  It's ready to ride!
I'm amazed how un-low this bike was geared to start with.  42x21 was
the lowest gear.  I have it all the way down to a 34x24 granny and
it's still barely rideable in the East Bay Hills.

Yep - BG rack I picked up on local CL along with a pair of Overland
Equipment panniers. I've missed out on 2 matching BG front lowrider
racks so far, but I'm patient...

btw - I'm almost sure your bike, like mine, is a 1986 model. I came up
with the year using the Suntour dates explained on the vintage Trek
site here: http://www.vintage-trek.com/component_dates.htm#suntour
I asume your bike came with the triple-pulley LaPree rear derailleur?
I replaced mine too, with a long-cage Ultegra.
I haven't switched to 700c wheels (yet). What canti brakes did you use
for the conversion?

[RBW] Possible stripped threads on frame ... what to do?

Hello!
I was installing a rack on my A. Homer Hilsen, and tightening down the
right-side strut on the frame, when I felt it all sort of give. The
bolt seems to be stable, but I am concerned that I may have stripped
the threads on the frame.

What should I do about this?

1. Nut on backside.
2. Get it tapped to the next larger size.
3. Red Loctite.
4. Don't worry about it until you remove the rack -- and don't remove the rack.

Patrick if torque is good, a little more ought to be better Moore,
who has stripped many threads in many places.

Use a slightly longer bolt with a nut and lock washer.put the nut
on the outside so it won't rub on the chain etc. if its at the dropout
area. That is one cheap way to do it. I'd try to back the bolt out and
inspect the threads then maybe run a tap though it to clean out any
paint plus freshen the threads. Use a new bolt also if its stretched
or damaged. You might have damaged the bolt and not the frame
threading making it an easy fix.

That happened to me a while back, but the bolt broke off inside the
eyelet when I tried to back it out. Had to drill carefuly, but I got
the remains out, and the threads were fine. When my new Bombadil
arrived recently, I asked my LBS  How much to chase the threads on a
new frame? The guy said $10 should be fine. I said Do you have any
idea how many eyelets are on a Bombadil? He said Whatever - $10
should be plenty, and I'll chase the bottom brasket and derailleur
hanger too. I Said OK, I'll bring it over in an hour. (Note: I'm
not sure if Rivendell chases threads on frames they sell - I think
they do for builds though. All I can say is that there was paint in
most of my eyelets. Your mileage may vary.)

I can honestly say he is intimately aware of how many eyelets are on a
Bombadil now! Lot's of interest in the bike for sure from other
mechanics - when they weren't teasing him for agreeing to chase so
many holes for ten bucks - none had ever seen it. After watching him
crank away for a while, I even offered to pay him extra, but he said
A deal's a deal, and I left with a smile on my face, and clean
threads all around. He even used a dab of Phil grease in every hole
for good measure.

I'd repeat what others suggested, if you really stripped it, either
get it re-chased, or just use a bolt and nut.  i've done this before
on frames that didn't have threaded eyelets (yes it's really old or
bad threads before it got to me), in one case i had to put the bolt in
with the head on the inside of the frame and the bolt on the outside
for clearance reasons.  aesthetically not the best but it worked fine.

It's two coats of clear shellac on Newbaum's PURPLE.  The decal
accents are purple.  It turned out pretty dark, I know.

Pretty bike, and I note with satisfaction that you've got the ends of
the hooks parallel to terra firma as God commanded us. (I recently
said unto myself, tilt them down just *wee* bit, and so I did and
immediately felt the pain in the heel of my left palm; back to
horizontality and righteousness it was.)

42/21 used to be a pretty standard racing bike low back in the days of
5.6.7 speeds; my
89 Falcon had a 13-21 7 sp Uniglide freewheel.

Hi all:

I am thinking of purchasing a new Rivendell for the wider tires tires
(currently ride a Creamsicle Rambouillet (size 54 cm)).  When I try
to pull up my sticks that hold the tape measure, my fine assistant
gets values of around 75 to 76 cm.  However, I can stand over my
Rambouillet as outfitted and still bend slightly at the knees (still
in stocking feet spread 10 inches apart), and the height of the top
tube from the floor is approximately 80 cm, therefore I know my PBH is
at least 80 cm, and probably slightly higher as I can still bend my
knees when straddling the top tube.  (I am 5 foot 6 inches tall, and a
PBH of 80 cm is consistent with Rivendell literature.)

In the grand scheme of things, a very minor problem to have, but it
does make me wonder why I cannot seem to pull up on my paint sticks to
get a more accurate measurement.

A 4 to 5 cm discrepancy is a very large one.  I would reconfirm the
measurement process with your fine assistant and double-check the
measuring tape and conversion calculation (if any).  Other than that,
wear thin and loose pants and yank that stick up severe enough that it
resembles you sitting on your saddle.  It should feel uncomfortable.

[RBW] WTB: NOS Suntour Freewheel, or other High Quality Freewheel: 32,34, or 36t preferred

3 IRD freewheels toasted in the past 6 months, and 20 miles home on a jammed
freewheel-turned-fixed today. I need something stronger and better.

Looking for something with at least 32t in back, more is nice but not
necessary.

Make my day, and help me kick a rather annoying series of mechanicals!

You parallelaterra zealots see flat drops wherever you look.  Mine are
not.  My handlebars are adjusted to fit the rider, not the fantasy of
a horizon.  I'd estimate -3 degrees.

Shimano ok?  There's still quite a few on eBay at ok prices. Th sun
tour ones have really gone up in price.

And to the cassette people, yes we freewheel people need to modernize
but when freewheel hubs last this long it's tough for some of us to
justify a whole new wheel.

And all this ird failure talk is makingn me question the one I'm using
at the moment.

[RBW] Bike Tour Stuff.

As I get ready to pack for my third bike tour. I start doing my
traditional pre-bike tour rituals.
I shave my mustache. (Something I'm not quite fond of doing. Because
it makes me look younger than I really I am.)
I lay out all my gear and take a picture. ( Because if you don't take
a picture of it. It never really happened)
Then I upload the picture. ( Because I'm vain.)

As I look at my previous pre-bike tour pictures I see the evolution of
gear as the time goes by. Starting from not knowing what to pack, to
packing too much and then not really caring what to pack. Not having a
scale but being a darn good guess-a-mater I'm putting the weight
between twenty to a hundred pounds.(Remember I'm a PE teacher not a
math teacher.)
Curious whats the average weight for packing for a nice tour?
