dragging just a slight amount. I thought I was getting weak or
something.tomorrow I try again. The bike is really great though
and the nice curved fork blades make the ride really comfortable. Here

[RBW] Re: shorts with a fly?

2011-06-12 Thread Tom M
Endura makes a few models of mountain bike shorts that meet some of
your criteria. They have a fly and they have a snap-in liner, which is
basically a thin pair of riding shorts. But once the liner is in
place, you can't really use the fly. I generally ride them without the
liner. FWIW, they have lots of pockets and are well made.

Re: [RBW] Re: Carbon-ectomy using a Carbonomas fork

2011-06-12 Thread J. Douglas Way

Aaron-

I'm using Grand Bois Cerf 700 x 26 mm tires. I'm limited in tire
clearance by the rear rather than the front.

The rake of the carbon fork was 43 mm compared to the 45 mm of the steel
Carbonomas fork. I didn't measure the length difference but it is
probably very small.

Good luck,

[RBW] Re: And Summer Begins.

2011-06-12 Thread velomann
3 more student days, a couple grade/meeting/move the classroom days,
one-day Safe Routes conference in Bend, and then...
I've already done a couple centuries this spring, but looking forward
to more family rides, and hoping to get out for some overnighters as
well.

What was hardest was I took a spontaneous trip to Yosemite with my son
and a couple of his high school friends over Memorial Day weekend.
With some fancy finaggeling and the wonders of the internet I was able
to score canceled campsites in the valley, though we had 3 different
sites for 4 nights. Beautiful weather and lots of walking/hiking. Next
time I'll take a bike - seems like every employee there has one and in
the valley it's quicker than driving - not that you would want to get
anywhere fast in Yosemite, but I walked by lots of people stuck in
traffic on Saturday of that holiday weekend. Felt like summer
vacation, which was the hard part - coming back to the classroom (and
the rain).

The shorts would be for motorcycling, to be worn under leathers.  The bicycle
shorts I wear for bicycling and sometimes wear for motorcycling don't have the
front opening.  Makes for a challenging situation at pee breaks.  And,
shorts-with-a-fly would make bicycling pit stops a little easier, I skuppose.

Re: [RBW] Trangia cook kits

2011-06-12 Thread Anne Paulson
I have both sets, the smaller and the larger. Trangia says that the
smaller set is appropriate for one or two people, and the larger for
three or four. In my experience, the one person set is perfect for one
but too small for two and I doubt the larger set is big enough for
four.

It all depends on what you cook, though. If all you're doing is
boiling water for rehydration, you can get by with a smaller set. But
let's say you want to make a soup, or spaghetti. The smaller set can
cook spaghetti for one, but no more. Let's say you want pancakes for
breakfast. The smaller frying pan cooks about half enough pancakes for
one cyclist's breakfast at one time.

Trangia offers a cute little teakettle that nests inside the set,
though Rivendell doesn't sell it. I find the little teakettle useful.
Let's say, again, that you're having pancakes for breakfast, or maybe
scrambled eggs. First you heat up your water for your tea or coffee.
You don't want to use one of the pots, because the one and only pot
lid is also your frying pan, and you need that for your pancakes or
eggs. You make your tea, and you save some of the hot water for more
tea or for dishwashing. Now your frying pan is free for the pancakes.
By the way, pancakes and Nutella is the yum for breakfast; if you use
Krusteaz pancake mix, you just add water.

[RBW] Re: Trangia cook kits

2011-06-12 Thread J. Burkhalter
Hey Mike,

I highly recommend them! I was a longtime MSR Whisperlite user until
trying one of the Trangia West Wind stoves on my Baja tour a few years
ago. That experience hooked me on the Trangias, and I've been happily
using the Trangia cookset available thru RBW (the smaller 27-7, I
think) for the last couple of years. Some of the things I like about
it: always works (doesn't clog), no soot, spilled fuel evaporates
quickly and doesn't stink, adjustable flame, super quiet, sturdy, no
pressurized anything, nothing really to break or fail, nicely
integrated kit, denatured alcohol is available everywhere, and it
cooks great. The hard anodized pots are holding up just fine. I
don't miss my white gas stove at all.

[RBW] Re: Trangia cook kits

2011-06-12 Thread J. Burkhalter
Thanks for the reminder on the water kettle Anne! I've been meaning
to get one of those ever since I bought the stove, for those very
reasons.

Anne raises a good point about kit sizing. I find the smaller one
just fine for 2 people (it would be even more fine if I could remember
to get that tea kettle). I tend to cook meats, fish, vegetables, and
eggs, and I have plenty of room for 2 person meals. If one tends to
cook things like pancakes, rice and beans, or other similar grain
centered meals, I would think the larger Trangia would fit the bill to
be able to handle the increased volume of food.

[RBW] AHH siting in Denver today

2011-06-12 Thread J. Burkhalter
I was passing through Confluence Park this morning when I spotted a
shiny new AHH parked in the shade along Cherry Creek. I ended up
having a great conversation with its owner, Paul, while siting under
the trees. He's a 69 year old fellow, who is recovering from a pretty
severe car accident that has left him with some serious pain and
immobility in his right leg, as well as some damage to his back.
Anyway, he's a longtime rider and after the accident, he realized he
was unable to ride his beloved Waterford road bike (with chrome lugs)
anymore. He just ordered and received this AHH a month or so ago, and
by all accounts he loves it! The Alba bars and B.68 make for a more
comfortable ride than his road bike, and he's now able to get out
regularly. When he ordered the bike he was expecting a lot of back
and forth regarding fit, and was thoroughly amazed that Keven and Mark
delivered such a well fitting bike with only his PBH.

His was a gorgeous and spotless bike with a standard Riv build,
including the new Longboard fenders. I was riding my Quickbeam that
suddenly seemed disgustingly dirty and a bit ratty. I might take his
advice and clean it, even though I assured him that while I'll win no
beauty awards, my bikes are always in tiptop mechanical shape :).
Paul got to check out my SaddleSack , Platrack, and dynohub. He was
pretty impressed at the quality of materials and craftsmanship in the
saddlebag (as am I). And I got to check out the Soma B-Lines on his
bike, which I've been pretty keen to see. He turned me onto a great
LBS I didn't know about and we got to talk bikes for a good long
while. If you're in the Denver area, keep and eye out for Paul and
his AHH. Super nice fella...

Here's his bike... http://tinyurl.com/3hfwqgh

Re: [RBW] Trangia cook kits

2011-06-12 Thread Ray Shine
I second what Anne and the others have said. I have used many alcohol stoves
(most I fashioned myself) but the Trangia really is the most reliable.  I
augmented mine a couple of years ago with the S-2 windscreen and stand from
Clickstand (Stove works, not the kickstand) and that has really optimized the
burning efficiency. I use mine backpacking, also, if I am solo. With others, we
use gas stoves.  I have a mall tea kettle, also, but it wasn't made by
Trangia.  One danger inherent with alcohol burners is that they are completely
silent. If you use one in daylight, you can't see or hear the flame, so be
cautious cooking with long sleeved shirts, etc.  Hear is the clickstand link.
They have some neat things:

Another neat thing about the alcohol burners is that you can carry the fuel in
a common plastic water bottle.  Spilled fuel inside pannier or backpack
evaporates quickly and leaves no residue. very clean stuff.  Just mark the
outside so you don't take a big swig of it on a thirsty day!

[RBW] sks longboard fenders on a romulus

Got the fenders in this week and I put them on the romulus today. I
just about ruined my fun by cutting the stays too short but with grand
bois cypres tires labeled 30mm - measured 32mm. I had no trouble
getting the longboard fenders that riv sells under the brakes and
clear. Worked out right well, actually. I suspect that the jackbrowns
might be pushing it a bit - but there MAY be enough room.

I'll take some pictures after a bit and post them if anyone is interested.

[RBW] Rode my Rivendell SimpleOne and .......

2011-06-12 Thread charlie
I took my new bike out for about ten miles with my brake (not
dragging) this time boy what a difference. It felt about five gear
inches lower. Tires were right at 80 psi and the ride was just
perfect. After arriving back home I took my geared bike out for a
quick spin down the street and back and I immediately noticed a huge
difference in the fit and my overall comfort. There is something about
the difference between the two bikes that I can't figure just yet but
the SimpleOne is definitely different in the way it feels when riding.
I didn't think there would be much of a difference since my setup is
close between the two. I'm figuring it must be the frame angles that
put me behind the cranks a bit more or something like that but its
really nice. I am more convinced than ever that Grant knows how to
design a proper frame.
