[RBW] FS: 59 Rivendell Romulus. Low Miles. Very Clean
Hi BOBs, I am selling my 59 Romulus. I got this bike in Feb 2004 but it sat unassembled in an unused bedroom for over 5 years. I had bought it as a spare since I have another 59 Romulus. I put it together to use on a supported tour in June 2009. It has 1500 fair-weather miles on it. It has never spent a night outside or been locked to anything or transported on the outside of any vehicle. Stored in the basement in the winter. Never used to carry much of a load or for commute. On the 2009 tour it spend each night in a VW Westphalia that belonged to a friend who was along. Here is what Grant had to say about the Romulus at one point including a comparison to the Rambouillet: The ROMULUS was a just-as-well-made but cheaper-to-buy version of the RAMBOUILLET. Cheaper because it came in as a whole bike. Cheaper because it was painted all one color (no cream details). The lugs were simpler, but they cost us as much, and are the same quality. The ROM got cut only because the Dollar was taking too big a beating, and continuing it would've meant raising the price about $400 per bike. Maybe we shoulda, maybe we shouldn'ta, but a $400 price increase with no significant change in spec is hard to swallow, so we dropped the bike. http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/romulus/index.html Here is what PJW offered at one point, which includes dimensions and angles: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/romulus.asp Pictures of my bike are here: https://picasaweb.google.com/jblish/Rivendell59RomulusForSale?authkey=Gv1sRgCIKtqvfemLm9owE# The Romulus is a classic Rivendell bike with a hand-made frame by Toyo in Japan. You will not find a bike such as this, in this condition, at a better price. You can compare it to the frames made in Taiwan now and it is still a bargain when it is this clean. If you want clean, look at the chain stay and bottom bracket photos. The bike is in close to new condition; that is what I believe justifies the price. The Romulus comes with: Nitto 46 Noodle bars, Nitto Technomic Deluxe 110 stem Dura Ace bar-end shifters standard Shimano (R400?) brake levers Jagwire brake pads that I put on when I assembled it Shimano 105 headset, bottom bracket, hubs and derailleurs Sugino Crown S 170mm crank with 48-36-26 rings Shimano 12-25 9-speed cassette original 9-speed chain with SRAM quick-link silver Araya RC-540 rims with straight gauge silver stainless spokes Panaracer Ruffy Tuffy 700x28 tires with presta tubes Nitto Crystal Fellow seat post silver SKS plastic fenders with quick-release front attachment and hardware. In the case of this bike, the cassette and seat post have never been used because I swapped out other parts when I assembled the bike. If you would rather have the silver Salsa Shaft or the Harris Century Special 13-30 cassette, please let me know. Otherwise you will get the unused parts as part of your package. I have put together two packages to offer. *Package #1 includes all of what is listed above, just as the bike came from RBW and is $1175.00 plus shipping. *Package #2 includes everything above plus: lightly used honey Brooks B17 Special *saddle* MKS Sylvan touring *pedals* Zephal #4 black *frame pump* with strap white Bontrager gel *bar tape* Cateye Vectra wireless *computer / speedometer* with pick-up unit, magnet, zip ties *a pair of Pasela tires* in either 700x28 or 700x32 with TG or in 700x28 without TG. You can have any two of the tires - mix and match if you want a bigger tire on the rear. *Package #2 is $1300.00 plus shipping *There are some substitutions and additions, including a large Nitto rear rack for $75 that we can talk about if you want the bike. If you want a new saddle I have New In Box honey Brooks B17 Special and / or New In Box black Brooks Team Professional (no bag loops). Most of this stuff is shown in the pictures and you can get an idea of what you might want from them. I will include what you want at a price we agree on. There is just one defect. On the right side of the down tube the Romulus decal has been partly scuffed and abraded. It is not a mess but it is far from perfect. You can see the damage in the photo. There is / was no clear coat over the decal. I regret this flaw. It is the only one of which I am aware. Preference will be given to local sales, to buyers who go for Package #2 and to anyone willing to let me drop the bike off at a shop we agree on for packing and shipping at your expense. I am a good packer but we are having a heat wave and I would prefer not to work in the garage packing a bike. I am willing to drive a couple of hours in any direction to meet a buyer part-way to deliver instead of ship. If you want the bike but don't like my price tell me what you want to pay. I believe this bike will sell this week. If I need to adjust the price I can do that. I do not want to mess with eBay. In looking casually at the local CL, this is not the kind of bike a person would look for on that forum. I

[RBW] Mounting rear Honjo to Simpleone/QB
Hi. Any of you kind folks experience the need to significantly improvise the permanent installation of a 40-ish cm rear Honjo on to the QB or Simpleone? I've recently discovered that in order to remove the rear wheel out of the horizontal dropouts with the fender intact, permanent installation of the fender will require that it be rotated forward about 6 (yikes!), and then trim the excess fender that, as a result of the rotation up/forward, now extends below the bottom bracket. Just to clarify the end result: I'd lose about 6 of fender coverage on the rear wheel. I hope this makes sense, and I look forward to your thoughts. Aside from durability, I think MTB drivetrains are mainly about having enough chain wrap capacity to use a really small stump-puller front ring. The ONLY thing I can think of is some front deraillers have a very deep inner part of the cage that can be tricky to set up with the Sugino triple cranks and their seat tube / chainstay geometry. I had a Shimano LX that I couldn't get to work on my Sam. The FD's that Riv sells - the IRD and Campy - work fine. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Any of you out there buy into the Zefal HPX with the ASV (auto head system)? I hve a few older HPX pumps in the garage and go back and forth with my mini pumps. The new head system on these has me a bit confused, things this simple should not make me feel so dumb. [RBW] Re: Zefal HPX from Riv?
I'm not sure how the automatic head is supposed to work given the picture on the box. You need something to push the pin on the valve down to let air in - in either presta or schraeder mode. I have the HPX classic and you can see here there is a pointy-thing inside the valve head that pushes the pin down: http://www.zefal.com/SITE/BASES/NOTICE/document/noticeDirectReversible.gif Maybe the pointy thing in the automatic version is fixed inside the pump head, and you need to push it down further as Eric N suggests...? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Zefal HPX from Riv?
I got one of those pumps and also found it frustrating to use. It seemed like the valve had to be in head of the pump at just the right depth and angle. The other frame pump Riv sells(http://www.rivbike.com/ products/show/topeak-pumps/28-024) works easier and seems to be better quality. I want to like the Zefal but I don't. Fortunately most of my bikes are now running variations of the Schwalbe Marathon and flats aren't that much of an issue. --mike On Jul 19, 2:25 pm, rperks perks@gmail.com wrote: Any of you out there buy into the Zefal HPX with the ASV (auto head system)? [RBW] Riv Chica Warrior!
Despite this record-breaking heat and humidity here in the Twin Cities, my partner Erin on her Quickbeam and I on my single-speed Proto-Bleriot elected to do our 20-mile round trip commute to work. The ride home was 98 degrees with a dew point at about 80 degrees…this put the heat index up somewhere like 100-115 degrees. Right balmy. Two blocks from home, as I’m looking forward to air conditioning and a cold one, all hell broke loose. Up in front of me is a maroon Mercury Cougar, and I’m thinking, “When did I last see a Cougar?” As I’m gazing, the car slows down and a young man hops out to go to the convenience store. I wait to see if the Cougar is going to park, but no, it just keeps going. As we proceed down the road, a bicycle passes me, and then I hear yelling behind me. I turn back to see another young man running like the blazes shouting, “That guy stole my bike! Stop him! That guy stole my bike!” It’s the dude from the Cougar who had passed me on the bike! So I stood up and bore down hard on my peddles in hot pursuit. He was riding on the sidewalk next to a big park and I was just behind him in the street. After about 3-4 blocks he started to fade—remember it was literally close to 100 degrees—and I caught up to him. “You stole that bike!” I yelled fiercely. It was clear that he wasn’t aware that I had been on his heels. “You stole that bike! Just drop it and walk away,” I commanded. His grin faded ever so slightly. “I see you,” I continued sternly (albeit between gulps of air). “I see your face, I see your clothes, I see the number on your jersey.” His grin dimmed. I looked at his bare arm. “I see your tattoo,” I said and looked him in the eye. “I see you. Drop the bike and walk away.” He knew the tattoo meant I could ID him. He looked away, dropped the bike, and wobbled off, his legs spent. A dude in the park had watched the whole thing and called out, “Whoa! You just caught that guy and made him give up the bike, man! You chased him down in this heat, and you made him drop the bike. You beat him and you’re twice his age, man!” Erin rode up, having stopped to call 911, and the young man who owned the bike came up huffing and puffing and was ever thankful to have the bike back. Most of the time, I count myself as one of the slower people out there on a commute filled with lycra-clad boys riding carbon racers. At 52, I’m all for bike lingering. But today, I busted it out at the end of a scalding hot ride and beat a kid who in all likelihood was not two but three times younger than me, and I caught up to him when it counted and got a stolen bike back. Re: [RBW] Riv Chica Warrior!
Hi Liesl, This is the best story (meaning true story) I have heard in years. Really. Also I can visualize things as you come up (I imagine) on the SE corner of Powderhorn Park, heading west. Protovelo in the lead. Erin's green 58 Quickbeam following behind to provide support and phone service. Gotta love a purple Cougar. People required to drive them gotta be bad to complete the package. Just the way it is. May I fill our kind readers in on the fact that you are not a hulk? Seriously folks, a person of huge kindness, generosity and wit but of smaller stature. She knew what to do to get the job done but it was not her menacing size that convinced the Cougar-Based Bandit to give it up. It was the cleverness of letting him know she was serious about nailing him plus her ability to ride fast in these horrible conditions. We set a record today for the highest dew point, 82, since 1966. Nice work, Liesl. I will search my workshop for a modest reward for your excellent achievement. Leave it on the doorstep, probably in a Target bag. I'll find something in the next day or two. But today, I busted it out at the end of a scalding hot ride and beat a kid who in all likelihood was not two but three times younger than me, and I caught up to him when it counted and got a stolen bike back. yea... and those shimaNo derailleurs... the nerve of that guy to deface a bike like that. From one 52-year old singlespeeding Riv Chica to another, I say awesome job. You have done something good for cycling and I hope the cycling gods smile on you for it! Joyce On Jul 19, 7:10 pm, Liesl li...@smm.org wrote: Despite this record-breaking heat and humidity here in the Twin Cities, my partner Erin on her Quickbeam and I on my single-speed Proto-Bleriot elected to do our 20-mile round trip commute to work. [RBW] Re: Mounting rear Honjo to Simpleone/QB
I have some extra-long V-O Zeppelin fenders on my Quickbeam. I did what you describe, and rotated the fenders forward about 6. I did not trim the front extension, though; I let it extend below the chainstays to the edge of the largest chainring. I bent the fender to fit through the stays, rather than cut notches. Bicycle Quarterly says it's the proper way, and I concur, having cut stay-notches in another fender. Notching the fender leaves the extension with no strength. The coverage loss in the back doesn't affect me, as I don't ride with others very often, and never in a paceline. I did put a mudflap on the back, which adds back some of the coverage lost. http://flic.kr/p/9t7HjT If you have a hex key (for V-O fender bolts, at least), you can loosen the stays to help get the wheel out of full fenders, too. Philip Philip Williamson www.biketinker.com On Jul 19, 2:21 pm, Lemon davidboydle...@gmail.com wrote: Hi. [RBW] Re: Got better pedals, need better shoes
Received my current issue of Bicycle Quarterly today and, by coincidence, they had a very favorable review of the Keen Austin shoe. I might check them out myself! On Jul 18, 11:30 am, Michael Hechmer mhech...@gmail.com wrote: My search for a new pedal to provide some variety from the Frogs, which I really like, has ended in success. I got a pair of White Ind. urban pedals and the Bruce Gordon half clips, I really like them. They are almost as easy in and out as the Fogs and almost as secure. They are pretty comfortable too, especially for the two hour rides on back roads that I do a lot of. However, my New Balance 908 sneakers don't quite fit the clip right(ok but not great) and the toes on the Keen Commuter, which i wear with the Frogs, don't fit under the clip. So I'm thinking about a shoe with a lower front profile but they are hard to find in a size 13. Ecco has one ($140, ouch!) and this cycling shoe from Keen:http://www.keenfootwear.com/us/en/product/fw11/shoes/men/pedal/corona... Does anyone have any experience with these? BTW, I now have a pair of Grip King pedals which got used just enough to get dirty, maybe 50 miles or so, which need a home. $45 shipped conus.
