[RBW] Re: Solo s240- Point Reyes

2011-07-24 Thread Manuel Acosta
eli,
Heres the route give or take a had full of missed turns. DON'T MISS
the turn on the bike path by passing some short section of Sir Francis
Drakes. Super cool bike path under some nice shaded trees. Also theres
a shorter, faster and steeper way to get to Limantor Road via Drakes
Summit Road. Toping around a 20% grade it's an interesting shortcut.
Also a nicer way of getting to Coastal Camp is taking the coastal
trial. The trial head is near the hostel there. Have fun!

Re: [RBW] Re: Was gonna buy a Riv but didnt...

2011-07-24 Thread Ken Freeman
Don't know if I talked about it much here, but I do like to test new ideas
in bikes before jumping in. I'm not generally conservative, but I am an
engineer, and tend to approach complex concepts a piece at a time. Chunk it
up, then solve the chunks. There are always several excellent examples of
finished bikes at all ends of the spectrum. In trail it's (among others)
Riv versus Boxdog or Boulder. Plus at the time, I was lusting for a Boxdog
Pelican or Boulder, and just recently back into a job, working. The first
gen Pelican had geometry nearly identical to my Trek 610 except for a little
lower BB and the fork rake. Tube lengths and main angles were the same.
Why not just make the change?

But part of the fallout due ot the delay is that I really enjoy riding my
Mondonico, and think maybe instead I should spend $$ on a new go-fast, like
a Mondonico EL-OS, or a Roadeo.

[RBW] Re: Paul High Flange Hubs on a SO / QB ?

2011-07-24 Thread dan gee
Have no experience with the quickbeam / SO, but... as long as the
crank and freewheel are within 5mm of each other, you should be fine.
If you're willing to switch to a 110 BB (which would put you at 44
chainline ) or a 113 (=47 chainline), you would be set (I doubt you'd
notice the difference with the 3mm disconnect). However, if you wanted
to keep the 107 BB, you could always screw the freewheel onto the
fixed side, which would put you 3mm off from the chainring and well
within the safety zone.

FWIW, I think the Paul hubs are the best fixed hubs I've used, and
I've used a lot. Light, well-designed (except their annoying, non-
rejection of the 42mm chainline), durable and good looking!

 -Dan

 Hello,
Does anyone have experience using the PAUL hubs on a Quickbeam or Simpleone?
I think Paul's recommended chainline for the rear hub is a bit unusual at
44mm for the fixed side and 47 for the free.
I'm planning on using that hub with a White Ind 16t freewheel and the
 Quickbeam crankset up front.
Any suggestions on how best to get that recommended 47mm chainline?  I may
have to scrap the 107bb included with my Simpleone?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

[RBW] Re: Saddle Sack Medium w/ Nitto Big Back Rack

2011-07-24 Thread Rick

what you need is a nitto q/r saddlebag grip for your medium saddle
sack. i
have this and it anchors the bag further back at the top, so that it
sits
plenty far back on my nitto r14 top rack. i also like the q/r, as i
use
this for commuting and like to bring my bag inside when i shop. for
what
its worth, i ride a 59 cm blériot.

I've used a similar set-up for a good while, mostly with a 57 Blériot,
except I had it sitting on a Mark's rack on the rear. The quick
release put the bag in the right spot to slip the leather slit over
the raised portion of the rack. It worked well for me.

Rick.

[RBW] Re: Was gonna buy a Riv but didnt...

2011-07-24 Thread Geoff
Hi Joe,

I had a GT3, too! A blue one. Then I sold it, and got an ICE S. Then sold
that, and got a Catrike Road.

Notice the somewhat disturbing pattern? Buy-Sell, Buy-Sell, Buy-Sell. But,
I have settled down, and have had my Catrike for the past 5 years. In
retrospect, the GT3 was still the best trike, overall, of the three.

I agree- everyone should try one. They're a blast.

Liesl,

I'd like to piggy-back on your last comment, and add that I would also JUMP
at the chance to get a Rivendell Rider B17!

I'd bet that there'd be plenty of Riv owners who would belly up to the bar
to buy one! Grant?

I sold my Romulus to convert to recumbents. Bought a couple of 2-wheelers,
then a trike, sold the 2-wheel bents, now resupplying with a few Craigslist
upright bikes, and thinking about getting a Hunqapillar or Sam. I'm
keeping the trike!

[RBW] Headset Issue

2011-07-24 Thread Darin G.
Just had the headset on my Sam adjusted at the LBS after discovering
the upper threaded race was loose. The cable hanger seems to have
acted as a lever on the race and worked it loose. The lock nut was
still tight. I took it home after adjustment without riding it and
discovered the steering was squirrelly. I took the front trunk bag
off the rack and things improved some but it still felt dodgy Not the
Sam I'm used to. Steering is jumpy in corners and I don't feel
comfortable taking my hands off the bar.

I've lifted the wheel off the ground to observe whether the wheel
falls over easily. It hesitates slightly at the straight ahead
position then falls over. When I rotate the steering by hand I can
feel it catch in both directions at short intervals. Before I get too
excited about this does it sound like its just too tight and needs to
be re-adjusted? Is the squirrelly steering a symptom of an overly
tight headset? I've read about indexing, but I can't imagine its
indexed after only 1500 miles.

D.G.

46cm noodle with Shimano levers. Good used condition.
$35

Selle Flite Gel Flow Ti 130mm saddle - ridden for one weekend; it's a

can provide those pics if you need):

[RBW] Re: Headset Issue

2011-07-24 Thread Joe Bernard
Too tight. If it only indexed at the straight-ahead position, you'd
probably have a bigger problem, but tight all the way through the range of
motion is a tight headset. If you have the wrenches, back off the locknut,
loosen the headset cup a quarter turn, then hold that baby steady while you
tighten the locknut back down. Keep doing this until the steering frees up.
