[RBW] Re: Straight TT vs angled TT
I think it goes like this: If you start from the bottom bracket there are really two vectors that completely determine how a frame fits the rider. One is the vector from the bb to the top of the headtube, and the other vector being from the bb to the top of the seattube. If you keep these two vectors fixed they determine theoretical toptube length. If the bb-st vector changes in magnitude, bounded by the top of the seat lug, you get top-tube slope. Lowering the seatlug along the angle of the bb-st vector results in a sloping top-tube, which has two effects: decreasing the lower bound on of the seatpost adjustment range, and lowering the top-tube on one end. A lower top-tube yields lower standover clearance, and decreasing the lower bound on seatpost adjustment range allows shorter people to ride a given frame.Whether these folks will be comfortable or not, of course, depends on whether they are comfortable with the theoretical tt length, which does not change in this process. Apologies if that did not make any sense. It's saturday morning and I have no idealwhy I'm up right now. Hey All, I mention this because nobody else has...yet. Maybe never, which would mean that I am alone on this one, but here goes. One of the things I have noticed as TTs have become angled is that they are less comfortable to lean up against. Too much slope and you end up on the seat, which is a totally different arrangement. I like them flat, or nearly so. I really like the CR720s. Got em on two bikes now, and will buy more. Have early 90s Campy high-profile Touring cantis as well (http:// ruedatropical.com/2009/06/rhygin-metax-randonneur/). Love them, but the old smooth brake post cantis are harder to adjust, if that matters to you. And they are very hard to find and expensive now. Late 80s XT high profile cantis are also nice, but have the same more fiddly adjustability. I just bought some smooth-post brake pads with replaceable pads to reduce the need for adjustment on the old brakes. Tried the current med profile Shimanos (BRR550). Didn't like them as much as the CR720s, and more expensive. Haven't tried Pauls, and probably never will. After trying a few different cantilevers on my Quickbeam, I finally settled on using V-brakes. I did have to switch levers to do this. I know that many people on this list disdain V-brakes, but I find that they are excellent for braking, especially in wet weather, and I don't have any problems modulating the stopping power. [RBW] Re: Berthold Fender Installation- It went so smooth.. till it didn't.. sheesh
I think the relative difficulty of mounting aluminum fenders varies from one bike to another. I acquired my Honjo fenders before the YouTube existed, and I used a photograph in a book to get the fender struts positioned correctly (a photo of a very cherry Rene Herse Randonneuse bike in the book Bicycling A Guiness Superlative Guide, on page 77). I'd previously mounted a set of Lefol fenders on my Paramount P-15 back in the day (photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/37964304@N05/sets/72157627672432684/), so I had some experience with the process. When I recently transferred the fenders to my Rivendell Road Standard, things got much more interesting. I mounted the fenders using the stainless steel sliding bridge bracket on the rear fender. The installation went well and proceeded without any real problems. Later, however, I had a vexing problem with the rear fender rattling. I bent the stays trying to subdue the rattling with little effect. Finally, I used the fender mounting tap on the bottom of the brake bridge to secure the rear fender. Rattling gone I think aluminum fenders are very attractive, but they're not quite as utilitarian as some of the various plastic fenders IMHO. Last night I installed a pair of the tektro canti brakes and discoverd that the instructions failed to mention that only a mutant with four hands would find this straight forward. I have bikes with plastic, aluminum, and steel fenders but I wouldn't ever again install fenders without both rereading the instructions and remembering that it will be a PIA. Actually, installing Honjo fenders is pretty straightforward - there's nothing really 'clever' or 'complex' about it - but it's slow and can't be hurried. Reading the instructions about 20 times for a week or two ahead of time, and working on visualizing what goes on helps. Understanding on a deep-down level that it simply cannot be hurried or sped up helps the most. One. Step. At. A. Time. First install. Mark. Remove. Drill. Reinstall. Mark the next. Remove. Drill. Reinstall. Mark. Remove. Drill. Reinstall. Breathe. Once you get your mind wrapped around the pace - the process as a whole, but especially the pace - it's not really much of a pain in the a$$. At least, not until your hand cramps and you drop the parts to the draw bolt in the grass and can't find them again. It helps a lot to spread some cloth under where you're working, because your hand is almost certainly going to cramp and you almost certainly are going to drop /something/. The real question is when will RBW release the prototype of the (lugged steel) tadpole trike they have secretly been working on? You heard it here first. Hi John, Wouldn't that be something? I can only imagine how beautiful and expensive a Riv lugged steel tadpole trike would be...and what inventive name Grant would give it. Regarding the visibility issues of riding a very low profile tadpole trike on roads shared with cars, suvs, and trucks- I agree, though the use of high visibility flags really helps. I've also found in my riding experience, that motorists really tend to give a wide berth of clearance to low profile trikers...probably because they're not sure about us, thinking that we're handicapped or something along that line. That courtesy really runs counter to the all-too-often adversarial treatment that traditional cyclists receive from those very same motorists. Still, it's really unsettling to have a humongous suv pull alongside you(in your trike), and you find yourself eye-to-eye with the hubcap/rim of that 18 front wheel. http://photos.imageevent.com/gyuenfamily/geoffswatchpics/websize/P118.JPG Best regards, Geoff -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Any tricyclists onlist?
Hi Geoff, I agree. Somewhat unnerving when I am waiting at a light and big truck / SUV pulls up on my left and the driver can't even see me or the trike other than my flag out his passenger side window. I am thinking about getting another flag and placing it more forward. Yesterday I was in a left turn lane behind a Cadillac sedan that started to back up and apparently did not see me but the guy behind me honked and she stopped backing. I was ready to get off the Trike and start running. Add to the visibility issue the whole distracted driving overlay and there is some potential for problems. My preference by far is to ride the trike on the open road and I think it will make a great touring machine - probably with a trailer. On the open road drivers do seem to give more room. I have a bright Portland Design Radbot 1000 tail light day and night that also seems to help.
Thanks, Geoff -- it looks fun. I've no particular desire for a recumbent, three or two wheeled, but I've long wanted an old fashioned British trike -- can't say why, unless it's the same inclination that has me riding fixed gears. One advantage of the upright is that it is as visible in traffic as a regular bike and a thread on the CR list had someone saying he had done a century in under 5 hours with really fit riders doing it nder 4. For me, I think the handling difficulty is part of the appeal: it's a new skill to learn. We'll see; I am stil not sure about left hand drive. [RBW] Air Travel With a 60cm. Bombadil ... Or other large and long bikes
I was wondering if anyone knew if there was any dedicated bike containers that would fit a 60cm. Bombadil ? ... [RBW] Re: Best/Favorite/Most Radical Cantilever Brakes
Two of my three bikes have V brakes (including the Sam Hillborne). For stopping power, they work really well. Am using the Dia Compe drop bar brake levers. For cantilevers, my favorite are the Paul Neo Retros. Have them on a bike and when set up properly they easily compete with V brakes for stopping power. And a lot more powerful than the 720s, in my estimation. The other nice thing about Paul brakes is the enclosed spring. Supposedly a nice advantage in bad weather conditions. Should find out this coming winter. Eric Platt St. Paul, MN On Sep 17, 11:01 am, cyclotourist cyclotour...@gmail.com wrote: V-brakes are great. I did have to switch levers to do this. I know that many people on this list disdain V-brakes, but I find that they are excellent for braking, especially in wet weather, and I don't have any problems modulating the stopping power. I also find them easier to set up and adjust than cantilevers.
