tent, usual accoutrements for a one night outing.  No, I don't have anyone
nearby that does S240's or, touring, for that matter, to learn from.   I
discovered quickly that while I can pack a car tight tidy for a vacation,
loading a bike up is another matter.  For instance, if I move the tent to
just behind the seat on the rear rack, and then put the Carradice bag behind
it (for easy access) - how do I attach the bag to the rack?  (it normally
attaches to the seat)..for that matter what is the standard way to secure
big stuff to the rack when not using panniers?  Bungee cords?...3/8 braided
rope?...giant velcro strips?   By the way I'm looking for neat, simple ways,
 not massive ugly knots etc.

It was not a goof - it was an unintended feature.

Still, these tubes seem interesting. Could be very nice for winter
riding when I don't want to worry about a flat tire. Can one assume
the rim strip is sticky on both sides to prevent tube creep and
possible problems with tearing out the valve?

Great great feedback everybody . thanks a ton for all the replies.

Yes I'm at a point where I don't want to travel again without my bike.
Last year I was without it for a month ... there were pros and cons to that

For now my travel is in the US. I've looked at airline fees and they vary
widely. I've also seen recommendations for a place called Shipbikes.com ,
which uses Fed Ex ground. I use FE alot these days. Minimal disassembly
would be a huge plus, like with an AirCaddy box or Amtrak !

Jim ... you're so right I'd rather ship it ahead of time than lug a
huge box around an airport.

Re: [RBW] Fitting on the Sam Hillborne

2011-09-24 Thread jandrews_nyc
I have a PBH of 84.5 and the 56cm Hillborne fits me perfect. MAYBE the top
tup is a little long and I should've purchased a shorter stem. (currently
use a 9cm stem with 46cm noodles).
I had been riding it with 37mm Panaracer Pasela's but a few months ago
switch to Schwalbe Dureme 50's to see if they would fit. Naturally, I had
to lose the fenders, but indeed they do fit. The huge tires brought the top
tube up very very close, but I can still straddle the bike with just a bit
of room. And, I wear very low shoes like, vans or cons.
So...
with a PBH of 84 you should totally fine as long as you don't go bigger than
40mm tires.

You should be fine. I have an 83 PBH and ride a 56cm Sam with 40mm

crashes and dismounts, and no damage to the tender bits (yet).

The advantage is that I can get drop bars high enough to mount a stem-
mounted child seat (Bobike mini).

I have a PBH of 84.5 (5' 10 165) and a 56 Sam. My Sam is a great
bike. I rode the 52 and it felt a little small. I am mostly riding on
road although I have had the Sam on a few fire trails and it is great.

There was some debate at Riv HQ about sizing as 84 -85 is the tipping
point between the two sizes. If you are set on 700 tires then you want
the 56. If you want 650B and more standover then 52.

In my case bigger felt better.

a Carradice Nelson longflap. Plan on carrying sleeping pad bag, small
tent, usual accoutrements for a one night outing.

 Cheers,
 Robert Opalko

 I'm

http://www.cyclofiend.com/Images/pdf/rbw_bag_capacities0507.pdf
I have one, and agree with Tim it's almost twice the size of a Nelson
Longflap. (Yes, I have too many bags).
As a test, was able to fit a Eureka Spitfire 2 tent (recommended by
Grant), Wiggy's sleeping bag and a Big Agnes inflatable pad in easily,
with room to stuff in some clothes.

Not saying it's big but - you saddlebag is so big, smaller bags orbit
around it like satellites.

[RBW] Re: Volume in liters of original Hoss saddlebag?

2011-09-24 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Chiming in with yet another confirming source: the Wayback Machine. Per
www.rivbike.com circa 2005...

THE INEVITABLE SIZE COMPARISON:

Keep in mind that these bags all have extra long flaps so they actually hold
more than the stated size.

LITTLE JOE: 400 c.i. or 6,490 cc. It's hard to describe the shape of the Little
Joe...it's not really a paisley like the Banana Bag but it isn't a rectangle
either. It's more like a trapezoid with rounded corners. It's about 11 wide at
the mouth and about 8 deep. The sides are about 6 long and they taper from
the 8 at the mouth to about 4 at the tail end.

ADAM: 780 c.i. or 12,780 cc. The Adam is about 6 tall by 13 wide by 9 long.

HOSS: 1010 c.i. or 16,520 cc. The Hoss is about 7 tall by 14 wide by 11 long.

oh, that's beautiful! I like the subtle light on the bike (and the

SAMwise Gamgee BORNE under a HILL?? fits the overall theme at least.
That's the explanation I'll use :). Just placed an order for a double top
tube 60 cm one myself.

[RBW] New AHH First RIde

2011-09-24 Thread rlc5925
UPS delivered my new AHH yesterday. Moustash bars, Jack Brown(greens)
and Grip King peddles. I got it together last night and adjusted out
this morning. I had previously signed up for a local ride several
months ago and decided why not go ahead and go. I was going to do the
65 mile leg but with no miles on the bike I did the 16 mile fun ride
as my first ride. Had a few long looks at the bike and one guy ask me
if it was an old style bike I could not resist and told him it was the
future. The AHH was a joy to ride. I can't say enough about the whole
experience and thanks to the crew at Rivendell for all the advice and
recommendations on the build. BTW my plastic Cannondale is for sale
on eBay if anyone is interested.
