[RBW] Re: Reviving a dead Brooks - Obenauf oil + goop vs. goop alone

2011-11-20 Thread Bill M.
There's no one answer. You say neglected, but what's actually wrong
with the saddle? Dry, cracked, misshapen? Over-applying goop is
probably not the best thing, Bill G.'s advice is good, but I have had
a sagging B17 that was revived with a week-long soak in water, some
massage to restore the shape, and a good drying out before riding.
The soaking appeared to have driven out some excess Proofide from the
underside which I scrubbed off. I have not reapplied anything to the
bottom, just enough Proofide on top to keep a nice polish. Many miles
since then and the saddle is in much better shape than it was before
the soak.

Bill

I obtained an old neglected Brooks. Before I start riding it, I know I

before I apply the Obenauf goop (from Riv)?
My worry is that goop, while it will help may also bar moisture from
 being absorbed as it should.
Maybe several goop treatments would get around this, but I'm thinking
that a couple or 3 oil treatments followed by a goop treatment might
 be more effective.
 Thoughts?

[RBW] Re: What's your winter project? 2011 version

Pretty marginally Riv-related, but one winter project will be refining the
build of this Salsa La Cruz Ti:

Several parts on it I bought from Riv: handlebars, rack, bag, brakes,
tires, pedals, saddle.

While it is titanium and tig-welded rather than steel and lugged, the size,
fit, and ride characteristics are similar to my Rivs. I'm looking for the

[RBW] FS: 1994 Bridgestone MB-1 (Pepper Grey Metallic) 52cm

2011-11-20 Thread Johnny Alien
I need to let go of my 1994 Bridgestone MB-1. I am not sure if these are
uncommon but I rarely ever see them for sale. This one is in excellent
condition with the exception of a tiny dimple on the top tube. It's not a
dent or crease and is not really noticeable but I want full disclosure.
Past that there are very few marks. Even the decals are largely there
(most older bridgestones from 94 lose the decals). The only decal with
wear is the MB-1 on the downtube. I have the original bar but the
suspension stem is not there anymore. It currently sports a brand spankin
new Nitto bullmoose bar set with lime bar tape grips. The shifters and all
are original. I have Grip Kings on it and can ship it with either those or
the original pedals. The seat is a brand new (rode it for only a few
miles) black Brooks B-17 narrow. I never had the original seat. Size is
52CM. The tires are Schwalbe Marathon 26X2.0 tires. Just gone completely
over by the local shop and in perfect running condition. $900 shipped

Re: [RBW] Tool Tip - How To Undo Chain Masterlinks?

2011-11-20 Thread PATRICK MOORE
SRAMs? Pinch and push the plates together laterally, ie so that you are
bringing the connected links toward each other. Sometimes if you rock them
side to side as you push them together, it helps loosen the masterlinks. The
masterlink slots must be free of grit, so if the chain is dirty it helps to
spritz them clean with WD40.

KHS links are simply a pain and I don't use them. I can't speak of others.

Re: [RBW] Tool Tip - How To Undo Chain Masterlinks?

2011-11-20 Thread MSmith
It's hard to describe in writing, but try this...

Use a pair of channel lock pliers and put one jaw on the edge of the
masterlink where the post attaches (i.e. not the sliding part.) The other
jaw goes to the same point diagonally across the masterlink. Gently
squeeze them together and the link should open up. It usually takes a few
tries, especially at first. Cleaning the link facilitates it greatly.

There is a tool for this, but I find it totally overrated. Channel locks
work just as well once you get the feel for it.

Hope that helps- Mike in unseasonably warm So. Boston, Mass

Wait 500 miles, then they're easy to remove, wear is your friend.
When installing a new SRAM chain, use the old master link to figure out
chain length.
Once you are happy with the chain length, use the new link.
Take the old link and tape it to business card and put in your saddle bag.

[RBW] Re: What's your winter project? 2011 version

Do not have much in the way of winter bike projects. New bar tape and
possibly new cables and housing on the Sam Hillborne. Otherwise, none
of the bikes needs anything big. Was lazy and didn't install studded
tires this weekend. Which meant no riding. Hoping to get more winter
riding in this year.

Also, unlike the past couple of years, have no bike purchases on my

Oh, and try to see if I can ride a single speed bike during the

[RBW] Re: Noticed anything different about front bag handling

2011-11-20 Thread NickBull
I've ridden a Rambouillet with about 10 pounds in a handlebar bag
mounted directly on the handlebars, high up, for thousands of miles.

I've also ridden a low-trail bike with about 10 pounds in a handlebar
bag mounted on a front rack low down directly over the front fender
for thousands of miles.

The latter is by far the better set up. But the former is just fine.
You're more tired at the end of the day with the higher trail bike.
It takes more effort to keep the steering in line, particularly when
climbing out of the saddle. But it's not a deal breaker from my
perspective.

So what do YOU think Rivendell front bag owner? Have you ever regretted the

My plans for the winter.

1. build up the hilsen. Wheels are in, waiting on cranks, bottom
bracket and some odds and ends
2. clean up and maybe overhaul the romulus drive train.
3.we're contemplating selling one of the tandems and acquiring another
one - possibly a tandem tuesday from bike friday, we like the idea of
a foldable tandem :)
4. thinning out some of the random bikes I've collected over the years.

[RBW] Re: dropping roadies feels so good.

2011-11-20 Thread Michael Hechmer
I am reminded of a Friday night coming home from work. My career as a
hospital chaplain was high stress and often left me drained. I turned
north for the last six miles feeling exhausted as I turned into a steady
wind. I plodded along without any energy when two guys in lycra went
flying by me on mountain bikes, without so much as an on your left.. As
I watched them go by I decided it was worth the effort to jump across the
gap and get a pull home. I lifted a couple of gears and bridged up to the
pair of riders, but then quickly realized that that the second guy couldn't
hold his friend's wheel, so I went around him and latched onto the lead
back wheel. He spent the next three miles trying fruitlessly to ride me
off his wheel. We reached a point where the road turned uphill. Since I
had ridden this road almost a thousand times I knew it got gradually
steeper for the next 1 1/2 miles before reaching 10% for the last 1/4 mile
at the top and knew that a rider needed to pace him/her self to avoid
blowing up before the top. I uncoupled,* *dropped into my little ring, let
him go, and casually made my way to the top of the hill. When I arrived,
I found my unwilling pulley doubled over, gasping for breath on the side of
the road. I wished him a good day and turned down the dirt road, two miles
from home. It felt very sweet.

Michael,
take care of Self; it's one of a kind and irreplaceable

I just did some masterlink judo this weekend. I hate it. I used needle-

has some needle-nosed pliers they've ground down on the sides to work
better.
In the future I will WD40 the links first, and try channel-locks
instead of the pliers. I may order the special tool from my LBS the

[RBW] Hilsen Populaire

2011-11-20 Thread Brian Hanson
I rode my AHH in the November Populaire 100k today with the Seattle
Randonneurs. This was my longest ride yet, and probably one of the coldest
with most of the ride in the 20's and 30's. I had two wool shirts and a
light windbreaker vest which kept me plenty warm. The only cold spots were
my feetsies. I met at least one other lister there, Stuart, who was also
on his first rando ride. It was a great day to be out, and the folks I
rode with were all top notch friendly people. The bike worked well. I had
it a bit over-racked in the front with the Platrack and just a lil 'ol
Acorn Rando bag. I also had a M/L Acorn saddle bag where I had an extra
wool jersey and socks stashed in with my tools. I definitely could have
fit everything I brought into one bag, however. The ride was uneventful
with no flats or wipeouts that I saw. One guy in a Ferrari having a good
time on the open Sunday roads, but that's about it for drama. I ended up
not eating any of the food I brought :) Just cookies at the controls. I
have a feeling it would change if I was doing a 200k + ride, however. I'm
looking forward to trying one of those in the next few months. Highly
recommended!

Good experience overall, and I have been wanting to try this based on all
the great ride reports on this list. Last night, I was pouring over the
what to pack threads, and found the advice very helpful.

A few photos I managed to snap from the day's activity:

[RBW] Noticed anything different about front bag handling

2011-11-20 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I'm one of those who believes high/low trail is FAR down the priority list of
important features on a bicycle. I ride many different bikes loaded in a
variety of configurations. There are more that are satisfactory than not. We've
sold and installed GB bags and their clones on several Rivs and Rivish bikes,
and nobody has complained about adversity as a result.

I also believe that geography plays a role. In Minnesota, we almost never have
long climbs/descents. If you ride in the Cascades, and some climbs last all
day, and you cruise at 50 mph in descents, then optimizing extreme high/low
speed handling may be more of a priority than it is here.

[RBW] Re: Noticed anything different about front bag handling

2011-11-20 Thread Mojo
I have held off this topic, but perhaps I have a some experience to share.
I bought a Tom Matchak fork to fit my utility vehicle, a Surly Long Haul
Trucker.
http://tommatchakcycles.blogspot.com/2007/03/frame-neutral-replacement-fork.html
I did this because this bike is my tourer and grocery hauler, and I live in
Colorado where climbs can go on for hours, and I was curious about the low
trail concept. I found the handling of the stock LHT slow and cumbersome
that only got worse with any front load and at slow speeds such as climbing
and or heavily loaded. I came to (probably imperfectly) understand this was
mainly due to the large wheel flop associated with the high trail geometry.
I didn't mind its descending manners.

Tom recommended changing my rake from stock 45mm to a custom 68mm. This
took the bike's trail from mid 60s to low 40s. Well the change with the new
fork was not immediately strange or at all drastic. Now the bike just
responds more quickly to my steering inputs. What I have noticed is that on
fast descents the bike no longer tracks 'as if it is on rails' but will
change course if I ask it to. You may or may not like that.

The bike still has very reliable steering, not at all unstable. The bike
rides very easily no handed. It really likes front loads now and I always
carry my groceries home on the front racks. I attribute this to
significantly less wheel flop.

Nothing else changed with this experiment. All the
same racksfendershandlebar bag were used before and after. My riding
position did not change. The wheelbase did increase by nearly an inch due
to the increased rake.

This was a splurge for me. I bought an LHT instead of an Atlantis to save
money and to feel I could use it hard and in any weather without guilt.
With the new fork I nearly doubled the cost of the frame. For me it was
worth it. The LHT is more fun for me now and more pleasant in its intended
purpose, carrying stuff. But it may not be the same for you and your bike.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: 1994 Bridgestone MB-1 (Pepper Grey Metallic) 52cm

2011-11-20 Thread cyclotourist
That's the bike I wanted in 1994! I instead ended up with a '94 49cm
MB-2http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/2863214487/from
Beverly Hills Bike. Great bike that I put a lot of miles on, but
ended up hanging in the garage. I sold it a few years ago. Man I always
wanted a '94 MB-1 though. LOVE that color scheme. If this was about five
years ago...

If you haven't ridden one, the MBs of this era at least, had great snappy
handling for an off-road bike and climbed really well. I haven't found a
 bike to compare yet.

 Recommended.

+4 on the MLP-1... Best $10 you spend on a tool!

Interesting aside: Trying to buy one from my LBS was the straw that broke
the camel's toe. First they told me there was no such tool and wouldn't
take the time to look one up in a catalog. I finally find someone to order
it, and when it came in, he was like So why do you want *this*? I gently
explained that it was rumored to make removing chains easier. Paid him my
hard-earned money, and left.

I now buy bike tools parts online :-/

Yep..good thing it's not my size. It's my favorite color/graphics of all
Bridgestones. I'd love to find one my size with the original suspension

[RBW] Re: Tool Tip - How To Undo Chain Masterlinks?

2011-11-20 Thread rcnute
I bend the chain at the link, press/pull the link apart, disconnect,
reconnect, compress with needlenose pliers. Never had a problem yet.
I don't remove them that often though.

They have been great for installation but I've not figured out a

 Any tool tips for this?

The Ti Vaya in particular looks like a great rough-stuff bike.

Looks like a great ride, Brian. 20's and 30's: You're awesome!
