[RBW] Re: Platrack Hack
I'm curious, is there really a model that by definition is the Nitto Campee? Four of my nine (nine?!?) Nitto racks have a Campee sticker on them, and none of them are that model. My Platrack and two Mark's Racks and two R-14 racks don't have a Campee sticker on them. But my two mini fronts, my Big Front, and My Big Back rack all have Campee stickers on them. Is Campee really a model, or more of a product line? I realize that if you google Nitto Campee you'll get images of that rear rack with the removable pannier rectangles. In general, my racks that have adjustable struts bearing weight do not have the Campee sticker. The ones that are loadbearing with only welded elements do have the Campee sticker. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Ted, Weren't you one of the original partners with RBW in the Heron project? I also have a poster (still in the tube) which is an artist's rendering of the brick front of a bike shop with a Heron bike in the window and an old bird smoking and pipe and walking with a cane out front. [RBW] Praise be of SimpleOne.
If not for the quickbeam i found locally over the summer i would be thinking about a SimpleOne now, the fact that this may be the last run ever (or for a long time), just makes me want to say this. If you don't have a Riv single-speed/fixie, go for it. My QB is definately the most ridden, most joy bike i've used in my stable the last six months, it's easily my go fast bike at the moment. if i had the room and the funds i'd consider a second simpleone just so i could keep moustache bars on one and albatross bars on the other. I've never liked moustache bars but on my QB they are just perfect. i never really understood the fixed gear/singlespeed concept (what's the big deal, just don't shift) but having owned one--and maybe it's the fact that it's a RBW one, i'm upset i didn't get one earlier. if you've been putting it off, look at a simpleone now, especially given how slow the sales, this has the look of one of the items that RBW will not bring back for awhile. [RBW] FS: Bridgestone X0-3 - 55cm top tube
Circle of life. I am not happy in having to do this, but my bicycle storage situation has become very insecure. I want this to go back to the forum from which it came as opposed to being stolen or vandalized. I purchased this off a forum member and have already offered him first right of refusal since I can't keep it. I believe it was pinned down as a 94. Size is 52cm c-t seat tube with a 55cm c-c top tube. Long and low. It has the original RX100 cranks, derailleurs, hubs. Original Dia compe cantis. I received it with the northroads/albatross style bar on it and liked it so I ran it this way. I did however source the correct (I think) brake levers and bar end shifters as original that will be included. I stopped short of the moustache bar since my Hilsen is set up that way. Pedals are BMX style and can stay or go. Seat and bag not included. Frame is sort of a plum-beer color. Sort purple, sorta root beer, all ossum. Several nicks and scratches, but no damage. Could be touched up...but it's sexy in it beausage. Bike is currently in safe temporary storage at my brothers, so I only have this picture for the moment. I can get proper shots in the next day or so. $500 boxed and shipped within the CONUS. Paypal add fee please. [RBW] Re: Stolen Bleriot.
I write because this is all I can do. For those that were wondering I locked the bike to itself with a kryptonite lock. While I may have lost a really great bike. I haven't lost the memories that I've had with it. I feel more guilty then mad or sad considering that way I got the bike in the first place. For those that don't know this bike was bought from a forum member founded on craigslist. The story can be found on Jim's website: http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2009/cc745-manuelacosta1209.html Granted this bike went through a lot. I'm still not giving up on finding it, but I guess thats what happens to bikes. No matter how meaningful they are or how many great memories you have with your bike all in all it's just a tool. A thing that helps you get from point a to point b. Don't get me wrong. I loved my bleriot and believe me it was well loved. But I can't be caught up being sad. Bikes get stolen. No matter how many wonderful memories and great stories I've had with the bike. I just have to move on. Hopefully I can find it. If not, it's not a total lost. I got some good mileage out of the bike. Tons of pictures. I'm more upset that I'm not going to be riding as much. If you see it please let me know. Would love to get this bike back. I'm fairly confident that I might just get the bike back. Not plenty of 49 cm 650b teal Bleriots in the Bay Area. I'm pretty sure it will show up. [RBW] Rims and tire width
I have a Hunquapillar on order and I'm going to build it up with a bunch of parts I have accumulated. What I'm wondering about is whether I can/should use the wheels I have. They're Mavic MA 3's 36 spokes and Shimano XTR M900 hubs. They're really nice wheels and the hubs are fantastic but I would like to mount 40mm or larger tires. The bike shop people say I shouldn't, but the argument isn't too compelling and I have a set of wheels w/ Mavic Open Pro and 38mm tires and it doesn't seem to be a problem, but what do I know, maybe there is. I just don't have any other use for the wheels except on the Hunqupillar and I would rather not dismantle them in order to use the hubs to build new wheels. I was hoping that some of the members on the list might weigh in on this. Thanx, Tom -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Well, I tell ya, if it was in my size I would have bought one. Sadly, I am a short dude who usually needs the smaller size bikes. Not a huge problem as an Atlantis is in my future but I think the limited sizing may have something to do with it. [RBW] New to the group – First Post! Tire Review, Saddle Swap
Hello Everyone, I was incredibly lucky to acquire my first Riv, a 48 Sam Hillborne, a little over 2 years ago as a birthday gift. It has been many gifts in one, the greatest of which may be the wind-in-my-face feeling that I can do anything from the seat of my trusty Sam. So along with this independence, I've really been racking and bagging it up. I have a basket zip-tied to a Nitto mini rack on the front; and a medium Sackville Saddlesack loaded onto the rear (currently rackless, works fine, but may throw a rack on later, don't know; yes it sits on the fender a little). Sometimes I slap on the Sackville panniers, but you gotta have the right kind of wind for those puppies. In short, I've turned my Hillborne into a cargo ship. Mostly for groceries or shopping; but if I needed to haul anything else, I’d take a lot of joy in figuring out how to do that. I’m totally sold on the Function-as-Beauty thing. I got a custom paint job, and for the first few months, I threw a fit if someone breathed on the bike the wrong way; but not anymore, because BTW (though I know I'm preaching to the choir at least somewhat here), though this bike rides like butter UNloaded; boy howdy—load 'er up and glide on home. That smile on your face isn't going to hurt anybody. I don't know how much grocery weight I've put on the thing, but it doesn't seem to mind, so I don't really think too much about it. Love that. http://bit.ly/sqT6he Last year, I also acquired a 50 Quickbeam, which is an amazing bike. Anyone on the fence about getting a SimpleOne should consider that bike more seriously. And not just as a secondary bike, but as your Go- To, Everyday. I’m not what you’d consider waifishly “fit,” and I lived in the hilly Blue Ridge (I’ve since moved), where I’d need to conquer hills to go anywhere—and I totally could on that bike, no big deal—but with Big Smiles. That’s a great, great bike. I don’t feel limited by the 1-2 gears; I feel adequately equipped, self-sufficient, competent. http://bit.ly/vQ2C5x And now, I’d like to put in a word for Col de la Vies. They don’t seem to get a ton of praise, but I’ve put maybe 3000 miles on mine with the Hillborne—road, dirt, gravel, rocky ruts, shallow streams, mud, grass, and now, over glass. Lots of broken glass, going over this one bridge near the stadium in Baltimore. These tires have been completely awesome in my experience. So, just wanted to share. Finally, Saddle Swap: I have a Brooks Swift (antique brown w/ copper rivets) in exceptionally good condition, currently on my Quickbeam. It’s not working out for me on longer rides because I can’t slide it back as far as I’d like. If any of you has a B.17 in similar condition and color and is looking for a nice Swift, please contact me off- list. [RBW] Re: Riv Email
I bought a Simple One frame, and built it mostly from the parts bin. I'm OK with canti brakes on it. I would have been equally OK with sidepulls. The bike is my primary commuting (1-2x/week) and shopping bike. I have a small front basket and a rear rack. I have battery lights front and back, grip king pedals, the crank is a triple from a 1986 Stumpjumper. It's geared on the low side. I can spin the pedals up close to 20mph, but really no faster. Since I'm not racing anybody, that's fine. When I'm going downhill, I coast. The gearing is low enough that I can make it up the big hill on my way home from work. I would gear a bike a bit higher for purely flat riding. I think my combination is 36/17, but maybe it's a 38. I like it a lot. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. To post to this group, send email to rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com. Re: [RBW] Question on cartridge BB
Overdue update: I swapped out the old Shimano UN40 BB (68x113) for a new UN54 68x107 today. I gained a steel leftside cup, and a much better chainline on the Quickbeam. Back in early November, when I found the old cracked cup, I just put in a new plastic cup. It promptly cracked upon install, but at least stayed tight. I was preprared to live with it, until I got to checking my chainline and realized the 113 bottom bracket was unnecessarily wide. While looking for the Tange unit Garth mentioned, I found a Shimano at the LBS, along with some thin chainring spacers to help me nudge the chain over. I brought the chainline down from 50+ mm in the front to just 45 mm, pretty close to the 42 mm at the rear. I could get it closer with thicker chainring spacers, but dem photos in RR41 scared me (page 16), so I'll ride with a 3mm offset between front and back for now. Maybe I can find a quality front ring with a lateral offset at the teeth? Funny thing, RBW's website says all Rivs can use a 107 BB, and no question about it, the Sugino XD cranks fit very nice and close with the 107 unit. Hey, I just gained some pedal strike clearance! But it came assembled from Riv with the UN40 113 unit. - Andrew, Berkeley On Mon, Oct 31, 2011 at 5:44 AM, Garth garth...@gmail.com wrote: Yes, you likely have a UN54 BB in there ... and it has a plastic cup. The reason they usually break is people overtighten them. The need not be torqued as the misguided instructions say! Just snug is fine. But hey, plastic is just a bad idea period, for anything in the BB.. and Shimano's use of it is inexcusable. You can get a new plastic cup, but you may be wondering if it will crack too... not really fun. Another option is a new aluminum cup by Problem solvers called an Up-Cup #54. But, for the cost of the Up-Cup($15-20), you'd be better of just getting a new BB. Shimano now has UN-55's which use a steel cup, but I'd get a Tange LN-3922 from Tange. It's the same internals as the one Riv sells but is all steel. The Tange's do not have that silly lip on the cup that the UN55/54's do, therefore allowing more chainline adjustments than with the Shimano. A second choice would be the IRD steel cup BB, easier to find. I've gotten the Tange's from bike shops via ebay and online. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: A recalibrated subconscious
I have only occasional use of the family automobile. I get almost everywhere on one of my bikes or by public transit. I've had the experience of getting in the car and not remembering where the controls are, or what they do. And we've had the car since 2000. I've been commuting by bicycle with extreme regularity for awhile now. Yesterday, instead of riding a bike I was driving my backup vehicle (an automobile), and before getting into the car for my errand, I threw some essential items into the Rivendell saddlebag (that's usually on my bike) and put that in the back seat of the car. A few minutes into my drive, without consciously realizing what I was doing, I reached my arm back to the saddlebag in the back seat to make sure that I had closed the rear of it. You see, you have to do that when you are traveling on your vehicle to make sure the stuff in the saddlebag doesn't fall out just in case you carelessly forgot to close it. I came to my senses and realized what I was doing (the car is not a convertible so there was no danger even if saddlebag was open), and then I smiled, knowing that my subconscious is now calibrated to commuting by bicycle as the norm. -Jim W. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] New to the group – First Post! Tire Review, Saddle Swap
Two great bikes! Cool email, too! On Mon, Dec 12, 2011 at 1:22 PM, Penny gopennygo.farth...@gmail.com wrote: Hello Everyone, I was incredibly lucky to acquire my first Riv, a 48 Sam Hillborne, a little over 2 years ago as a birthday gift.
