Re: [RBW] Re: A great link to the best overview I've seen on lighting systems
Thanks Kelly, I too have reconsidered the info on that website after re-reading it carefully. I can't feel anything when riding my SON28 wheel on the Atlantis, but just for the sake of it will try riding a regular front wheel to see if I can tell them apart. Today I picked up a new SON28 Dyad 36 front wheel for the Hunqapillar and will go with another Edelux on it as well. The new SON28 hub is so nice to look at... seems to be asking to be matched to a shiny rear hub as well... Will need to sell some stuff... [RBW] Betty Fever...
Tonight I got Betty fever and decided to pay her some attention. My daughters are home from Berkeley for a week, before going to meet with their grand-parents and I'm going to see if they'll come on a ride with me and give the Betty a try. Poor Betty had been hanging in a corner with a flat front tire and the Nitto Touring (trekking) bars I was experimenting with. Decided to bring her down, fix the flat and reconsider the bars. All of a sudden, I found myself swapping the black Marathon tires for a pair of red Hetres I had ordered a long time ago and was thinking of returning but never had, to dress her up a bit. They look wonderful on the bike and with thus inspired, I again found myself putting the 150 Bullmoose bars and giving them a try in my backyard. The result was very surprising. Still haven't taken it out on the street, but I found myself fitting on the bike on an extremely comfortable upright position with the bar at its maximum height. Riding on the backyard/patio is not very realistic, so tomorrow morning I'm going to give her a try. If the ride is as nice as I'm envisioning, I may not even allow my daughters to ride her! And... I'm testing those bars on the Atlantis as well. It also seems that the 47mm Honjo fenders I had never returned will actually fit on the Betty with the Hetres... While they never seemed they would fit, tonight was too much to resist and I took them out of their bags to actually test fit them around the Silver brakes. Will do some more checking tomorrow, but it does seem they'll fit. Photos will be posted tomorrow during the test ride... Re: [RBW] Re: 3 pictures of my beautiful Redwood
Thanks. The color is NOT the original, which was a much lighter greensort of like the color of the New Beetle a couple of years back. Now the color I picked is Imron #44420 (Med. Olive metallic). I had to choose it from a swatch and had a great deal of trepidation until the finished bike finally arrived. I think it looks fantastic---especially set off by the traditional Rivendell cream headtube and detailing. The tires are Schwalbe Marathon Supremes. My first ride on it yesterday was almost as much fun as the first time I rode without my Dad running along side. [RBW] Tis The Season - Wretched Excess
During the dark times of the year I find myself adding to the lighting on my Saluki to make myself more visible on my commute. Plus it can be entertaining to have the bike masquerading as some sort of alien conveyance. I'm fond of passive and active lighting. Reflective gear is excellent for taking advantage of car lighting to help highlight the bike. Active lights are good for getting recognized and honored by cars exiting driveways, cars on intersecting roads, cars entering or exiting street side parking, along with ninja pedestrians, joggers, cyclists, and dogs. The Saluki is my choice for 'dark and stormy night' rides. Over the years, during winter, I've gradually added to the bike's lighting arsenal. [RBW] Re: Betty Fever...
Here are some photos from today's test ride: http://tinyurl.com/7fr7pda. Some initial notes: - The 150 Bullmoose bars feel great and I believe are the most comfortable bars I've tried on the Betty. They are at maximum height and I could probably have them a bit higher still, but this was an extremely nice and comfortable setup to ride the Betty. I like them so much I'm going to try them on the Atlantis as well, where I can't yet get a perfect set of bars for me. - These thick Brooks grips, that I had originally tried on the Hunqapillar (that's why they're black) are a bit too thick, but did feel much better on the Betty than they did on the Hunqapillar. They are most comfortable to ride without gloves, so if they stay, they are likely going to be ridden as such. Might try some better matching thinner leather grips. - The Hetres ride very nice, but it seems to me so did the original Marathon tires. I'm going to be adding the 47mm Honjo fenders to finish dressing her up and making her truly versatile now that the rains are on their way. - My butt can't really get used to the Brooks saddles; might try a B67 I have lying around, but will try to get all my Brooks saddles organized and offered for sale so I can get another Berthoud touring saddle for the Betty. - Got my oldest daughter to test ride it in front of the house; she doesn't like the saddle and said she felt a bit stretched out but looked great. All the women in my house love how the Betty looks now, but I'll have to get them to ride it more. Re: [RBW] Re: Betty Fever...
Went for a third longer ride this afternoon, home to downtown Palo Alto to meet my wife and daughters who were doing some shopping, and then when I left them, took the Betty on a ride around Stanford. I have to say that the current configuration is probably the most comfortable of all my bikes, rivaling that of the Hunqapillar which also happens to be a 58... I think I'll have to have some more extended swapping between the 150/200 Bullmoose bars on the Hunqa... The ride was fabulous, the Betty feels perfect, nimble, agile and very steady. Here are some photos: *http://tinyurl.com/6vjtl8m* * * The fenders are definitely going to be added and I'm testing the Bullmoose bars on the Atlantis. Have done some dry runs with the 150 Bullmoose bars on it with no brakes or grips and the fit feels surprisingly nice. It's more of a hassle to re-cable the breaks, but I think I'm going to do it. [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar: crotch-worried
I would follow their recommendations. I would be riding a larger if my legs would grow. I've been riding a 54 all year but I have an 85pbh(after raising my voice an octave). That's complicated by the fact that I'm 6' tall. I used drops and a regular stem (rather than the recommended dirt drop) to compensate. Take a look http://simplecycle-marc.blogspot.com/2011/10/re-review-hunq.html?m=0 You'd have your seat even higher. I would definitely have gone bigger if I could, but just couldn't stretch my legs. All that being said, it's by far the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden. I love my Hunq, order now before she changes her mind! [RBW] Re: A great link to the best overview I've seen on lighting systems
Same here. Have a SONs twice. Current bike never vibrates that I notice. Earlier bike was the smoothest rider I ever owned (sadly destroyed while parked on a sidewalk by an out of control truck). [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar: crotch-worried
Thanks again -what a helpful group. I should have mentioned in my original post that I intend to go with Albatross bars. This sounds like another vote for the 58 as long as I'm not using drop bars; I don't think there have been any standover-related contraindications so far. Love those pics of your bike in the snow, btw. On Dec 18, 1:43 am, Ian Dickson iandicks...@gmail.com wrote: I'm 5'11 and also have an 87 PBH, and Rich strongly recommended that I get the 54. I love it, though I'm pretty sure I could have set up a 58 so I'd love that, too. Do you know what kind of bars you plan to use? If you want to use Albatross bars or something like that, I'd go for the 58. With drop bars, maybe lean towards the 54. Here are some pictures of my bike, so you can get an idea of what your saddle and bar height might look like on a 54: http://www.flickr.com/photos/54529677@N07/sets/72157624965806797/ There are pictures there of the bike with noodles and with mustache bars. I've settled on the noodles with a 10cm dirt drop stem. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: A great link to the best overview I've seen on lighting systems
Interesting info reviews, but still quite subjective. Regarding the dynohub vibrations, it's important to keep in mind that he's not just comparing different hubs in isolation. The hub interacts with the rest of the wheel and the fork (and possibly even the rest of the frame). Anecdotes like this do not constitute anything like scientific data, and regardless of claims of objectivity, the author's observations are just as subjective as anyone else's. It might be possible for an individual to compare different wheels (not just the hubs) on a given bicycle, as long as precautions were taken to ensure that he couldn't identify them. Even then, to make a really fair comparison, you'd have to build several wheels on each hub to control for variations in rims, et cetera. And even that wouldn't tell you how much vibration *your* hub will cause, and under what conditions, on *your* bike. It's a very hard problem, but a single anecdotal comparison is not very useful for determining which hub will cause the most vibration on a given bicycle. --MR -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Some QB - LL frame differences
I got in a nice shopping ride on the LongLow this morning, after riding only the QuickBeam for a few weeks. Apart from the freaky feeling when I stopped pedaling and coasted along, the main difference I noticed was more relaxed handling, maybe less quick steering is the way to describe it. Anyway, it prompted me to take some side-by-side measurements. Here they are, if anyone is interested (all in cm) Measurement, LL, QB Head Tube, 23.7, 24.7 Top Tube, 62.1, 62.3 (center of HT to center of ST) Seat Tube, 65.0, 66.0 (BB to top of TT) BB Height, 27.1, 28.0 (above ground, similar tires on 700c rims) Chainline, 4.3, 4.5 (middle ring, Ritchey Logic on LL, Sugino XD2 on QB) Wheelbase, 108.5, 108.5 (both are adjustable, happen to be same) Chainstay, 45.4, 44.5 (BB to axle) Seatstay, 58.9, 60.0 (axle to top of TT) Seat Height, 84.6, 86 (BB to top of saddle) Seat, 19.5, 20.0 (top of T to top of Saddle) Front Reach, 60.0, 56.5 (center of clamp to front of saddle) Rear Reach, 88.5, 85 (center of clamp to rear of saddle) Pedal Height, 9.2, 10.0 (spindle center above ground) Bar Height, 104.3, 113.5 (clamp center above ground) Cranks, 175, 175 Q-factor, 150, 160 Funny thing, they both feel right even though the LL has its bars further forward and lower than the QB. Same moustache bars on both, with an old Nitto Pearl on the LL and a non-name dirt drop on the QB. Some obvious differences, the frame height is a clean 1 cm largwer on the QB, and the chainstays are longer on the LL. TopTube is only 2 mm longer on the QB.I could probably stand to adjust my stem and seat on the LongLow, they have not been changed in several years and maybe would feel better after adjustment. And I'm going to try the Qb again with a lower and longer stem, to see if duplicating the LL seat reach is useful. But they're different bikes, for very different purposes. The other obvious difference between them is that the LL was custom built by Joe Stark to Grant's specs, based on all my measurements, back in 1998. Not that I've gotten any taller, or grown longer arms, but RBW's design criteria may have changed between the custom-frame LongLow era, and the QB introduction. And yes, I have hit pedals to ground on the LongLow, but not yet on the QuickBeam. The higher BB is working out fine. - Andrew, Berkeley -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
