[RBW] Re: paddle plugs to attach cyo to son hub

2012-01-06 Thread Philip Williamson
Peter White calls them connectors on his site. I've called them
spade connectors, but I'm not an expert. I think PJW has them for a
couple bucks apiece.

The nicer way to attach a lighting wire to a dynamo hub is called a
Shimano. I was impressed with their slick little plastic doodad that
finishes off the wire. Strip the wires, poke 'em through the plastic
box, fold 'em over and snap the cover on. Voila! Regardez votre plug!
Not two independently-minded spade connectors writhing around on the
end of a wire, but a single unit that snaps right onto the hub.

To make my SON wires easier to attach, I now mount the hub with the
spades pointing straight up, so I can see and feel them in front of
the fork. The lighting wires come around the outside of the fork to
reach the spades, which leaves me more grip area on the wire, and a
cleaner angle of attack than hiding the wire behind the fork blade. It
leaves more wire visible, but I no longer care. With the black SON,
you can barely see it...

[RBW] Re: Fenders/Tires for Rom

2012-01-06 Thread Joe Bernard
I've owned two Rivendells: a Romulus, and my current AHH. They're both good
road bikes you can ride all week on any paved road, and most dirt ones. The
only differences I can detect are more clearance and more braze-ons for the
AHH. I can't vouch for the Romulus hitting a limit on tours I don't do, but
for most daily riding conditions, I can't see the AHH guy hitting the road
while Mr. Romulus sits home sulking because his bike let him down.

As far as handling differences..I doubt it. I went from the Romulus to
Recumbent World for a few years, so I can't say I have a direct memory of
the Romulus' ride, but the AHH felt dang familiar when I hopped on it. I
think it's safe to say they both ride like a Rivendell road bike. In other
words..GREAT.

Good points, but the drivers I worry about are not the ones who wait,
either patiently or impatiently, for a signal. I am more than happy
to wave them by. Out here in the country pretty much everybody waves
at everybody anyway. It's the ones who decide at a distance it's okay
to speed up and hurry around (in spite of oncoming traffic and
precious little room to spare) who worry me, risking my life to save
themselves a few lousy seconds. Fortunately those are few. I live in
an area near a major university (about twelve miles from Athens, GA)

awareness of cyclists and courtesy from motorists has improved here

 of those bikes.

Not a matter of anger or being snarky, just thought it was funny. I've seen
my wife and she had the xtralight Merlin, and a Lemond. Both sat there and
were never ridden after she got the Rodeo. Eventually she sold the Merlin
 extralite.

Every review I've seen on the Roadeo from other owners on here has been very
positive. The few short rides I've had on the Roadeo have been impressive.
Just wish they made won big enough for me.
Considering is a swiss army knife no different than an 80's trek or just an
over priced steel wannabe is ok.. just surprising since we are in a Rivendell
forum. Figured some other owners would have spoke up.

Patrick, yes I took it as baiting and didn't think you were serious about
wanting an honest review or thought as you've read the same posts and more as
I have. I also know that how a bike feels to me may not be the same as it
 will feel for you.

Just as I don't believe a long haul trucker rides the same as an atlantis.
For me it's a fact I've ridden them side by side... other disagree. Take the
silver brakes off and put on a dura-ace group, thread less headset and 700x25
 tires and go.

Bicycle magazine indicated they didn't think the roadeo was smooth enough
when they made the tires hard instead of the pressure that was recommended.

So as much as I enjoy your posts about your trikes and other bikes and such..
yes this one felt like a bait people into giving information that you had no
intention of using. Since you already had the information about the Roadeo
posted on here many times with outside reviews that you've read.

With the large list of objections and reasons and price to not own a Roadeo
why ask about it even? That was my perspective on it. So ya baiting and
funny.. not a slam on you.. just an observation.

Sure as heck not a word in anger.. see all of this typing to say what I said
in what a sentence.. :) When I bought my AHH I took a 14 hour round trip
drive to ride one before ordering. I don't care if GOD himself said it road
great I wasn't spending that kind of money without riding it.

I'm glad the Country Bike Shop was there or I would have ended up flying to
 California to ride one first.

available.

And this is my last one (ok, no promises ;-)) if Tippecanoe is too cute
sounding, may I suggest Wabash.

Re: [RBW] Re: Fenders/Tires for Rom

2012-01-06 Thread Steven Frederick
I own a Heron Road and a Rambouillet (and coincidently owned a
Waterford 1250). The Heron Road and 1250 were pretty similar--the
Heron is a bit stiffer-tubed and sportier but they have about the same
fender clearance. (i.e., not much). The Rambouillet is a touch
longer and slightly less sporty and uses longer reach brakes so has
room for fatter tires and fenders.

In my opinion, a classic road bike has shorter chainstays and lower bars
(circa the '80s) than a Ram/Rom/AHH. The latter to me is more of a sport
tourer, which would be a classic road bike stretched a bit, with a higher
headtube. In my mind, the full-on touring line is drawn at beefier frame

[RBW] Re: Indian bike names

2012-01-06 Thread George Schick
Well, this'll give away my own NE Indiana roots, but I'll opt for
Little Turtle. He was Miami Tribe leader during the early settling
of the upper Midwest and figured into the French-Indian War and the
War of 1812. I especially liked him because he was clever enough to
realize that he could charge a toll for those traders needing to
portage from the Maumee River to the Wabash River in order to continue
their travels West. My second favorite would be Tecumseh, but I
suppose that would sound too much like a lawn mower engine and would
probably initiate a copyright suit. You can read lots about either of
these two on the Web

[RBW] Re: Fenders/Tires for Rom

2012-01-06 Thread Darin G.
I don't think I'd want to change the brake just to get .2mm of
additional tire under a fender. This bike already rides nicely. What
I would want to do is squeeze every bit of comfort possible out of it
for long rides without affecting its performance and generally sporty
nature as I bought this precisely because I found my Sam sluggish for
unladen or lightly-laden duty. I have no desire to turn the Rom into
a Sam and even if I were to hang the Sam's parts on an A.H.H. I would
build it up with an eye towards comfort and carrying saddle bags,
etc. If I'm limited to a very smooth supple 28 tire on the Rom for
sportier riding that's going to be just fine.

 tubes and cantilever brakes.

[RBW] Re: paddle plugs to attach cyo to son hub

2012-01-06 Thread Liesl
Hi Seth,

I went through several machinations when I got my SON hubbed wheel and
wnated both the wheel and my E3 to go back and forth between my Saluki
and my protovelo bleriot. I used Peter White's gold connectors and
they work fabulously. I put one set on very short wires coming from
the hub, then had standing wiring running up the fork blade to the
canti brake hanger and up to the handlebars. Each end of this
standing wire had gold connectors, and each of the two bikes had this
standing wire set-up. then the E3 got the same treatment as the hub:
a short wire with gold connectors. I can move both the wheel and the
light back and forth effortlessly and do it in very low light. I
really like that I can take the light with me easily and quickly when
I park the bike in a public location. I used the rubber handlebar
mount for the E3 on m'bars. The whole system works like a charm. I'm
about to set up my Trek 620 the same way so the light can move over to
it as well.

good luck,
Liesl in also eerliy snow-free Minnesota

Wow,

Re: [RBW] Re: paddle plugs to attach cyo to son hub

2012-01-06 Thread William
Seth

K+J magnetics has all shapes and sizes of rare earth (neodymium) magnets.
They have a nice website, and I've bought lots of stuff from them for
unrelated projects. My idea is round flat disk magnets, with the poles
aimed along the flat part of the round disk shaped magnet. It's called
diametric magnetization.

Like this model:

http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=R424DIA

That way the magnets will self-align to one another by just getting them
close. Wet and cold (and DARK) won't matter in the slightest. That aligns
your two contacts every single time. Round makes it easier to fabricate a
weatherproof exterior that still allows the magnets to rotate when they are
self-aligning. The thing I haven't worked through is how to put the
contacts on there where they are reliably sandwiched without scrubbing each
other off when the self-alignment part is happening. Maybe a plastic
spacer, that also tunes the pull force by separating the magnets by just
the right amount.

[RBW] cable hangers - keyed or unkeyed?

2012-01-06 Thread Ted Durant
Question for those experienced with setting up cable hangers from threaded
steerers: how important is it for the steerer to have a keyway (or, for older
French cycle aficionados, a flat spot at the back of the steerer) to keep the
hanger properly aligned?

I'm assembling a bike with an un-keywayed steerer and a NOS Mafac cable hanger.
Choices are: have a keyway cut into the steerer and modify the hanger to have a
key; have a flat ground on the steerer and leave the hanger as-is; or grind out
the hanger so it's round all the way 'round.

Or, go outside the box and use a different hanger, of course...

Recommendations?

 -liesl

Excellent point, with which I used to agree. And, not that I completely
disagree with it now, but my thoughts have evolved. (I hesitate to say,
but think I can respectfully do this, and it does relate, given GP's
consideration of 'an Indian name'.) So, I'll give it a try...

The community I grew up in near here is called Indian Springs (not the one
north of Las Vegas); there were springs that the Cherokee used nearby,
along the 'Great Warriors Path' (predecessor of the Stage Coach road, an
extension of the Fincastle road, that became part of Boone's Wilderness
road). My elementary school's mascot was, to no surprise, the 'Redskins'.
When I was a kid, we'd play cowboys and Indians, and it wasn't a bad thing
to be an Indian. When my father was a boy, he used to hunt for arrowheads
along the stream near a known encampment site, that's a couple of miles
upstream from where that creek flows past my house. We grew up with a
romantic notion of what the 'noble savage' represented. Today, my son's
school's mascot is 'the Indians', and the middle school he was in that
feeds into it, are also the 'Redskins'. It's a big part of the early
history here.

It wasn't meant to be disrespectful. Over half of the placenames in the
United States come from Native American names. The word 'Indian' itself is
being replaced with 'Native American', for the sake of political
correctness.

All of my ancestors have been in East Tennessee, southwestern Virginia, or
western North Carolina since 1800; all were in North America prior to 1776,
but some where still on the Chesapeake, or elsewhere on the east coast, at
that time. Of those that I've traced back across the Atlantic, I'm
predominantly English/Scots-Irish/Welsh, with one originating from
Switzerland. The one variant: my paternal grandmother's
great-grandmother's mom, and her husband's mom, were Cherokee, part of the
ones that remained hidden here when the Trail of Tears occurred; however,
they remained away from what became the Eastern Band, and thus aren't on
the Dawes rolls.

Where I live, there aren't a large number of African-Americans, not as you
have elsewhere in the country. There was one black student who was a senior
when I was a freshman, and there was a freshman when I was a senior, but I
never knew either of them. However, there are plenty of people around here
who are racists. I really didn't know anyone who wasn't like me, a 'WASP',
when I was growing up, and was actually afraid that, as odd as this might
sound, that I might be a racist and not know it, at that point. I went to
Parris Island, wide-eyed and apprehensive; and that was where I first got
to really know some guys that were black... and they were great fellows. I
was actually relieved, and felt foolish for having felt as I did. But later
on in infantry school, I met a couple of them weren't. But the twist was,
they presumed I was racist because I was a southern white boy, and thought
I was out to get them; the table was turned. However, there were plenty of
other people who were great, too, and a few others that weren't, and I had
the realization: people are people, and you have to take each individual
individually on their own merits.

After that point, was when I noticed rap starting a transitioning from a
'black-only' thing to a 'whites acting as black', is how I viewed it (I'm
sure I was late to this, had happened elsewhere earlier, and, long before
with other genre, but, I digress). I frowned on such, not as a
anti-African-American thing, but, that, other whites were being
disrespectful of 'black culture', because they weren't reserving it for
them. I viewed it as, it was wrong for me to be part of that, of being a
white guy listening to rap, not out of hate, but because I would be taking
something from them. [I can't say that I necessarily could have
articulated that at that point, it wasn't a conscious philosophy, just my
retrospective view of myself at that time.]

But finally it dawned on me at some point along the way, that my view of
that, was actually a form of segregation. Not an active, but a passive
variety. And not only that, but by allowing, even a passive, segregation,
to continue, it could inadvertently allow (not necessarily for myself, but
for 'people in general), a fertile ground to nurture an underlying racism,
by having that segregation keep an understanding of other cultures from
developing. If you're a part of it, you're not going to throw stones at

K+J magnetics has all shapes and sizes of rare earth (neodymium) magnets.
They have a nice website, and I've bought lots of stuff from them for
unrelated projects. My idea is round flat disk magnets, with the poles aimed
along the flat part of the round disk shaped magnet. It's called diametric
 magnetization.

 Like this model:

That way the magnets will self-align to one another by just getting them
close. Wet and cold (and DARK) won't matter in the slightest. That aligns
your two contacts every single time. Round makes it easier to fabricate a
weatherproof exterior that still allows the magnets to rotate when they are
self-aligning. The thing I haven't worked through is how to put the contacts
on there where they are reliably sandwiched without scrubbing each other off
when the self-alignment part is happening. Maybe a plastic spacer, that also
tunes the pull force by separating the magnets by just the right amount.
