[RBW] Re: Once upon a ride... (a Homage to Ray Hosler Cycling Adventures.)

2012-01-10 Thread Pondero
I was out exploring a new route near the house one day. I was seeking
an out-of-the-place for a micro-tour. To my delight, the paved county
road turned to gravel, and the gravel turned to dirt, and the dirt
turned into double track. I was thrilled. It appeared that not only
would I find my nice solitary place, it would also be very close to
home. It would be my time constrained go-to.

At the top of a short, steep rise, I found a large flat rock. It was
perfect place to sit a brew some coffee. I set up my gear, and
reveled in the quiet. Things were going so well that I decided to
take out a little homemade device that would sit atop my Kelly
Kettle...and warm Pop Tarts.

I've got one Pop Tart on the device, another just-warmed Pop Tart in
one hand, and a fancy cup of coffee with flowers on the side in my
other hand. It was perhaps the most goofiest of my goofy
moments...when I hear the jeep. I see the rancher with dog in the
back come up the steep rise, looks left, sees me, double takes, and
his jaw drops. He didn't look happy. I don't think he was expecting
what he saw. He slammed on the brakes, cut the engine and stares me
down. Then he says, Just what do you think you are doing here?!

It didn't take me long to figure out I was in a fix. So I used my
goofiness to my advantage. Out exploring, and having a snack, I
said, like maybe that's what we both were doing. He told me I was on
private property. I apologized, respectfully and appropriately called
him sir, and told him that I was just following the road and hadn't
come across any signs or fences, and that I'd pack up and leave. He
smiled and said, Okay, take your time. Nice day, isn't it?

Then I turned the event (leaving out certain details) into an
instructional blog post on micro-touring...

http://chris-pondero.blogspot.com/2009/12/coffee-camp-pop-tart-smoke-out.html

...and that's what happened when I found myself accidentally on
private property, and the owner caught me.

Re: [RBW] Re: Once upon a ride... (a Homage to Ray Hosler Cycling Adventures.)

2012-01-10 Thread Tim McNamara
In some cases (apparently there are quite a few in the Bay Area, reading Ray
Hosler's various reports and also some other reports) there are at times rights
of way through private property. The landowner may not understand that or may
understand it and still try to keep people from exercising the right of way.
They may erect fences with gates across the right of way that are illegal
and/or misleading.

Minnesota and Wisconsin have various access laws for hunting and fishing; there
are requirements for property owners to post no trespassing signs to notify
those seeking access. Without proper posting, legal access can be assumed. I
don't know if any of this applies to Manny's or Pondero's rides.

Excellent point, with which I used to agree.  And, not that I completely
disagree with it now, but my thoughts have evolved.   (I hesitate to say,
but think I can respectfully do this, and it does relate, given GP's
consideration of 'an Indian name'.) So, I'll give it a try...

The community I grew up in near here is called Indian Springs (not the one
north of Las Vegas); there were springs that the Cherokee used nearby,
along the 'Great Warriors Path' (predecessor of the Stage Coach road, an
extension of the Fincastle road, that became part of Boone's Wilderness
road).  My elementary school's mascot was, to no surprise, the 'Redskins'.
When I was a kid, we'd play cowboys and Indians, and it wasn't a bad thing
to be an Indian.   When my father was a boy, he used to hunt for arrowheads
along the stream near a known encampment site, that's a couple of miles
upstream from where that creek flows past my house. We grew up with a
romantic notion of what the 'noble savage' represented.  Today, my son's
school's mascot is 'the Indians', and the middle school he was in that
feeds into it, are also the 'Redskins'. It's a big part of the early
 history here.

It wasn't meant to be disrespectful.  Over half of the placenames in the
United States come from Native American names.  The word 'Indian' itself is
being replaced with 'Native American', for the sake of political
 correctness.

All of my ancestors have been in East Tennessee, southwestern Virginia, or
western North Carolina since 1800; all were in North America prior to 1776,
but some where still on the Chesapeake, or elsewhere on the east coast, at
that time.  Of those that I've traced back across the Atlantic, I'm
predominantly English/Scots-Irish/Welsh, with one originating from
Switzerland.  The one variant:  my paternal grandmother's
great-grandmother's mom, and her husband's mom, were Cherokee, part of the
ones that remained hidden here when the Trail of Tears occurred; however,
they remained away from what became the Eastern Band, and thus aren't on
 the Dawes rolls.

Where I live, there aren't a large number of African-Americans, not as you
have elsewhere in the country. There was one black student who was a senior
when I was a freshman, and there was a freshman when I was a senior, but I
never knew either of them.  However, there are plenty of people around here
who are racists.  I really didn't know anyone who wasn't like me, a 'WASP',
when I was growing up, and was actually afraid that, as odd as this might
sound, that I might be a racist and not know it, at that point.  I went to
Parris Island, wide-eyed and apprehensive; and that was where I first got
to really know some guys that were black... and they were great fellows. I
was actually relieved, and felt foolish for having felt as I did. But later
on in infantry school, I met a couple of them weren't.  But the twist was,
they presumed I was racist because I was a southern white boy, and thought
I was out to get them;  the table was turned. However, there were plenty of
other people who were great, too, and a few others that weren't, and I had
the realization: people are people, and you have to take each individual
 individually on their own merits.

After that point, was when I noticed rap starting a transitioning from a
'black-only' thing to a 'whites acting as black', is how I viewed it (I'm
sure I was late to this, had happened elsewhere earlier, and, long before
with other genre, but, I digress).  I frowned on such, not as a
anti-African-American thing, but, that, other whites were being
disrespectful of 'black culture', because they weren't reserving it for
them.   I viewed it as, it was wrong for me to be part of that, of being a
white guy listening to rap, not out of hate, but because I would be taking
something from them.  [I can't say that I necessarily could have
articulated that at that point, it wasn't a conscious philosophy, just my
retrospective view of myself at that time.]

But finally it dawned on me at some point along the way, that my view of
that, was actually a form of segregation.  Not an active, but a passive
variety. And not only that, but by allowing, even a passive, segregation,
to continue, it could inadvertently allow (not necessarily for myself, but
 for 'people in general),

[RBW] 58cm Saluki for Sale, Nice Condidtion, Can Include Extras

2012-01-10 Thread Peter M
Had this up for trade but now have a tentative deal worked out to get
a smaller AHH so this beauty needs to go. Again it is a 58cm Saluki in
Pea Sage Green. Has one tiny ding in downtube and some paint loss
behind BB but I touched it up pretty well. Sale includes frame fork
and headset. The BB is brand new but it is 113 since I run IGH hubs,
if you want it though I will include it for nothing. Besides for the
minor techincal issues bike is in great shape with really no other
scrapes or paint loss to speak of, never crashed or dropped. Chainstay
has a cool shellaced twine finish with tape under it to keep it water
proof but if you dont want it I can get rid of it no problem, paint
under it is perfect. One of the last of the Toyo built Salukis, it
really is a beautiful bike but just too big for me. Here is the link
to flikr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/ if you need
more pics just let me know. I also have a campy NR strada crankset and
bb if the seller wants to have a more vintage flair i can include at a
very low price. Paid $1,200 shipped a few months ago looking to get
$1000 shipped this time around because I am being honest with the
small cosmetic details. Thanks for looking.

[RBW] Re: Once upon a ride... (a Homage to Ray Hosler Cycling Adventures.)

2012-01-10 Thread Smitty-A-Go-Go
I was indoctrinated at a very young age not to trespass onto private
property. My dad had many stories from his youth (he was raised on a farm
near Tulare, CA) of shooting trespassers with rock salt. No questions
asked. It was family policy... you see someone you don't know on the farm,
you shoot them with the rock salt. It was a relatively small family farm
though, not a ranch with hills, trees, and a road system. It was more a
situation that the trespassers were there to steal crops. I can't imagine
cow theft by bicycle is very common.

All that said... I have a friend (no, it's not me) who loves to fish
lowland ponds (I do like to fish but I prefer high mtn lakes). Many of the
ponds in Western WA are on private land. He regularly trespasses to fish
these ponds. He's been caught several times. His default is to play dumb.
He's charming in a nerdy sort of way that you might not expect from a
trespassing fisherman. It works for him.

If I do find myself in a trespassing situation, I'm already committed to
the play dumb strategy.

59.5cm (center to center) and ST is 60cm (center to top), rear
chainstays are about 435-440mm, dropouts are horizontal. It has very
ornate lugs and is beautiful. Has some honest light beausage but no
dents or dings. Still looks really nice. These Road frames are hard to

[RBW] Bosco Rubbe wheel size

2012-01-10 Thread Joe Bernard
Can anyone confirm that it's 650b? It *looks* that way, but I can't find a
reference to it.

[RBW] Re: 58cm Saluki for Sale, Nice Condidtion, Can Include Extras

Great color, amazing deal!

Here is the link
 to flikr pagehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/if you need
more pics just let me know. I also have a campy NR strada crankset and
bb if the seller wants to have a more vintage flair i can include at a
very low price. Paid $1,200 shipped a few months ago looking to get
$1000 shipped this time around because I am being honest with the
small cosmetic details. Thanks for looking.

[RBW] Re: FS Rivendell Road 60cm - $750

2012-01-10 Thread Esteban
Someone's stoked. One quality that my Joe/Joe Road Custom has that
really stands out to me is how it feels climbing. Really, really
steady.

Congrats to someone on the list. Run 28s, forego fenders, and ride it
as the classic roadie it is.

Selling my 60cm Rivendell Road frame for $750. This was built by Joe
Stark and painted by Joe Bell. This frame would run over 3k now. TT is
59.5cm (center to center) and ST is 60cm (center to top), rear
chainstays are about 435-440mm, dropouts are horizontal. It has very
ornate lugs and is beautiful. Has some honest light beausage but no
dents or dings. Still looks really nice. These Road frames are hard to
find and would be a nice alternative to the Rodeo. Rivendell thinks
the head angle is 73.5 and the seat tube is 72. Should fit 32mm-35mm.
The rear spacing is 130mm. Here is some more info, this was written at
the time of the frames construction:

[RBW] Re: FS Rivendell Road 60cm - $750

2012-01-10 Thread AJ

The lucky bugger, that would be me. Funny thing, this afternoon I was
chatting with a local gentleman about an RB-2 he had for sale. I was
really only interested in the frame, he was keen on selling the
complete bike. So I put pencil to paper trying to figure out a way of
making the deal work.

Checking on the group tonight I noticed Andrew's Riv; I pounced. We
had a nice chat, and I relieved him of a few other bits and pieces he
had. I'm looking forward to the build keeping me occupied this
winter.

Thanks Esteban for the suggestion; I'm thinking along those same lines.

[RBW] Re: Mountains of the Rose City

2012-01-10 Thread Mike
Nice shots. On a day like that and with some elevation it's hard to
get a bad shot. I strongly suggest heading out to Crown Point some
time for even more spectacular views.

I'm always on the lookout for Rivs around Portland. I haven't seen
either of those but I'll keep an eye out for them.
