[RBW] Re: 50-32 crank option in silver
Don't discount the White crank too easily. They are much better looking than the pictures on their web site. The finish is a highly polished black, not the matt black we associate with mt bike carbon cranks. I hesitated for a long, long time because of the black rings, but after buying them I found both the looks and performance outstanding. And the versitility is huge. I run a 44/30 with an 11-28 nine speed cluster. I then switched to the new Shimano Ultegra RD, which is designed for wide range, compact dbles. This is probably the best shifting bike I have had in 30 years of riding, which includes a number of highly regarded set ups. Re: [RBW] Re: Not So Quick Beam
Great pic. If you lay a straight edge over the top of the chain you could measure the static sag and provide a very good rule-of-thumb for setting up single speeds. To be verified by the Park beer bottle opener test, of course! From the photo it looks like about 1/4 - 3/8 inch? This might be more reliable even than the up-down wiggle test, as the force of gravity is pretty constant. There's a fine line between slack and super-taut that I consider optimal. 44/30 and 9-speed 11-28 is a super setup. [RBW] Re: Questions: 9-speed cassette to 7- or 8-speed switch
Exactly why I needed to ask the question. I wasn't planning on swapping the cranks out for a 94/58mm BCD (I didn't know that a 22T chainring did not come on a 74mm BCD). As I thought about making this change over the last few months, whenever I saw something interesting I made a note. Somewhere along the line I saw something that made me think a 22T chainring would make a nice low end for my triple. I still need to go back and pull together my notes, but this puts off the 22T chainring idea. And as was also noted the 2T really doesn't buy that much. Thanks! [RBW] Re: Questions: 9-speed cassette to 7- or 8-speed switch
Based on the feedback here I am leaning now towards an 8-speed and given the incompatibility of a 22T BCD chainring, it may be best to stick with the 24/36/46 chainrings. I just did a quick search and it appears that there is a 13-34 8-speed. I'm not sure how readily available they are or the cost, but I think it's worth looking at. You hit the nail on the head, though, as I am intrigued by 7s and have found my 7 perfect for my purposes, excepting I have never toured with it. On Feb 13, 9:13 pm, dougP dougpn...@cox.net wrote: Joe: You mention you don't use the high ones much on your daily commute, and that's probably typical of most of us. You also mention using your Atlantis for loaded touring. My Atlantis is the only 8 speed bike I've owned I've fooled around with all sorts of cassette combinations. For loaded touring, I've observed that fairly closely spaced gearing (2 tooth differences) in the mid-range allows a forgiving choice of gears and shifts easy. My all time favorite cluster is the 13-28 7 speed but that's not quite low enough with a serious load. Adding a 32t or 34t big cog to make an 8 speed takes care of that issue. And I'm still running the standard 24/36/46 front rings. If you're really intrigued by 7s, and there's lots of people who swear by it love it, just get the 13-34 and the spacer, and don't mess with the chain rings for now. Ride ita lot. You may find out the 24 x 34 low is fine for your terrain loads, and the spacing works for you. All of this stuff is pretty forgiving easy to change back if something doesn't work out. If you're friction shifting 9 speed you won't have any issues with fewer cogs. While un-modified cassettes may shift better than customs, cogs spacers can be mixed'n'matched in surprising ways and still work. Be forwarned this exercise can be a black hole for time effort but it's a fun hobby. dougP On Feb 13, 9:56 am, Joe S ddlttr...@verizon.net wrote: I enjoy checking out the information here daily and have taken advantage of it and contributed once or twice in the past. [RBW] Re: Questions: 9-speed cassette to 7- or 8-speed switch
Thank you all for the information thus far. I'm leaning towards an 8- speed and the information from William and Jim and DougP is making think I should stay pat on the chainrings. The information you have provided on the chains is encouraging. I most likely will trade out my 9-speed chain for an 8-speed, though I am understanding the 9-speed should be ok. I neglected to say at the outset that an impetus for me in making the change (besides the fact that wear and tear is starting to dictate it is time) was that I had a problem with a dropped chain under load on my last tour. Fortunately I was able to extricate myself from the problem, but the more I thought about it afterwards, the more I thought that a narrower chain with more sprockets was more of a liability on the road than a wider chain (which in theory would be stronger and easier to maintain) and fewer sprockets. [RBW] East Coast Rivendells / BOBs
So many of the posts here cite Riv gatherings and sightings on the West Coast. I wonder if they are just more common there. I live in NYC but have strong connections to the Bay Area (and I favor Grant's bike philosophy) so I own a Riv custom. I get strong reactions here. People literally stop me on Manhattan streets and say, Wow, that's a beautiful bike! or I've heard about Rivendells but have never seen one. I'm the odd man out in the local club, but I think the Rivendell aesthetic has just not penetrated much here; nor has the notion of bicycles as other than mere fitness machines. It's probably my skewed perspective, but it seems that way at times. This local club is a bunch of hammerheads and equipment geeks, mostly very fast riders, yet they are bemoaning the fact that the club is not growing, that there are no C level riders. For the first time in years, I am considering volunteering as a ride leader. Not to serve as a conduit to bring entry-level riders into the A or B classes, but to validate the concept of casual riding as an end in itself. But I wonder if I'll have to stipulate that I'm not doing this to replenish the ranks of A and B riders. They would really have to alter their perspective to accept that. Well, I'm getting off-topic. Who's riding Rivendell-style bikes here in the East? I do know of the BOB-ish off-roady ride up the Hudson, but that sounds too off-roady for me. Fortunately I was able to extricate myself from the problem, but the more I thought about it afterwards, the more I thought that a narrower chain with more sprockets was more of a liability on the road than a wider chain (which in theory would be stronger and easier to maintain) and fewer sprockets. You won't win anything in the dropped-chain department going from 9 to 8, as 9 is no more prone to dropping than 8. Dropped under load is more accurately described as dropped to the inside when shifting the front derailleur under load, yes? If so, the answer to your problem is a chain keeper, like the N-Gear Jump Stop. In my experience, 9 speed chains wear as well as 8 or narrower, and any differences you encounter are apt to be due to differences in maintenance. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: 50-32 crank option in silver
One more option. If you like the White cranks but not the rings, then check out the DaVinci Cranks. These are actually made by White, but are designed much like the TA, with interchangeable spiders. You can buy the crank and either 110 or 94 spider and put whatever rings you want. The design is low Q, and can be either a dbl or triple. This is what I run on my Ebisu All Purpose and on my Touring Tandem. Nice cranks, US made, less $ than TA. I have done business with daVinci a few times and found them easy to deal with, although like RBW, they keep a tight inventory. http://www.davincitandems.com/ michael -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I didn't see 94mm spiders on the DaVinci site. But you can go down to a 32T in 104mm BCD 4-arm, which was what the OP was about. I think it's tricky finding 50T rings for 104mm, though. 104mm is a good option for a 48/32 double for sure. *Spiders Available* - Four Arm 104mm - 64mm - Standard 110mm - 74mm -Road 130mm (with 74mm triple option) -34 tooth Spider/Chainring. This is a replaceable one piece spider/34 tooth chainring.
