[RBW] Belated introduction
Hello Everyone! In October of last year I was lucky enough to purchase my very own Sam Hillborne. I sold my cross-check (too small 56cm for a 6' tall guy) and car, and I have not regretted my decision one bit. Every day I arrive at my destination with a huge grin on my face because every ride is so pleasant. I was afraid of getting such a large 60cm frame at first, but it turns out to be just fine. I finally managed to get some photos up on flickr so enjoy. Hopefully I'll get some better pics of Sam and I cruising along the Monterey Bay coastal bike trail soon. http://www.flickr.com/photos/76132654@N02/6983971041/ Steven, Monterey CA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Jack Browns vs. Pasela vs. ??
I've ridden Jack Brown Blues about 6 days/week for around a year with only one flat... a one mm wide wire manage bend around the tread and puncture the sidewall. This bike is my work horse so I'd say they're pretty good tires. I don't have experience with the others but these are fun, cushy, durable and fast. Steven On Tuesday, March 13, 2012 2:20:35 PM UTC-7, JL wrote: Hello All, I am interested in some reviews or insight about Jack Brown tires. I have plenty of experience with high volume 650b tires and not as much first hand knowledge about plumper 700c tires. I ride 700x28 Paselas (both TG and non) on a regular basis. Are Jack Browns a better ride and/or long life than the 32 or 35mm Paselas? Are there other tires that one should consider? Kojacks? GB Cypress? [RBW] Re: My Atlantis Frame is Shipping!
For coverage, it will be close. The hardware on the front fender might, or might not clear a 42. Have 700x40 Marathon Duremes on the Sam Hillborne and had to fiddle with the cream longboards to get everything to work. Tried to mount the front fender to the rack yesterday and threw everything out of line. Was able to get it back to normal, but now have a large hole in the top of the fender. And still no attachment to the rack. Sigh. But the fenders should just, barely, eke out coverage. IMO, the silvers are a touch better in that department than the creamboards. [RBW] Re: My Atlantis Frame is Shipping!
Darin, I don't have pictures at hand but have Marathon Supreme 40's (42-622) / Longboards on my Atlantis for almost a year now. Oh. and the back rim is an A719 laced to a White MI5. Previously I used Marathon Plus 47's with Silver SKS. I still have a new set of orphaned 47's if interested ;) I appreciate the sturdiness of the Silver SKS and have them on other bikes but from a functional stand point the Long boards provide better coverage and although not quite as sturdy by compare are plenty sturdy. I like this set up enough that the Supreme's are wearing and I purchased another set for replacement when these demand change. One note is that this setup is for daily commute. I commute about 16 miles daily on surface streets and city roads. I can't opine on fully loaded touring. Finally, I do receive regular compliments about the bike when out and about. My stock response is and it's highly functional I like the fact that everything works well for me and that it's attractive is secondary. I'll try to get some pictures up in the next day or two. I vote for Longboard. Here is a pic of the longboards over 700 x 40 Marathon Duremes: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/wy60R5EEhVK52RCNC89ByPBgKrmLWcThQVl2j-KPz0A?feat=directlink It's tight. i don't think you could get a bigger tire in there, at least with the sidepull brakes. Re: [RBW] Re: Bike lust.
Tim - Just saw this; thanks. How does the Atlantis look for fenders with the 60s? What are the actual measurements between the fork legs and stays at max tire width? Anyone want to trade a trike for an Atlantis??? Used the Fargo with 35 mm Kojaks to go to Presanctified (ie, reserved Eucharist) liturgy last night -- 21 m rt including stop at PO -- as, with my middle finger knuckle sprained, I can't reliably operate the single right hand brake lever on the Riv with lights. The Fargo handles decently with that wheelset, but it is nothing like the magic of the Rivs. Tangent #2: Cyo R: I done heerd tell that these don't cast a beam far enough for'ard for anything but ambling. I have one on the Fargo and simply aim it high enough to barely catch stop signs a block away: the beam is fine, in fact quite good: long and broad and wider and more squared off than that of the regular Cyo. I chose the R for the Fargo thinking its beam might be better on dirt -- which I think is the case. Not sure I don't prefer the R to the regular. [RBW] Jan Heine says I can ride my Bombadil forever!
OK, that's not a direct quote. He didn't say that specifically, but in today's blog post, Jan *does* debunk the notion that steel frames go soft with use. They don't. You can't break in a steel bike and make it get more flexible for comfort and planing, and you can't wear out a steel frame in terms of stiffness. It doesn't get flexier with use. You might break it with use, but you won't make it flexier. Good read and uncontroversial for many of us, but definitely counter to the popular notion in the cycling community in general. http://janheine.wordpress.com/2012/03/15/frames-going-soft/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: So jinx has me wondering--Homer Hilsen for Bombadil?
It's now discontinued by Burley, it seems, but it's still by far the best of it's kind, in my opinion. You can still find them online for ~$350. When it's time to sell mine, I expect to have no difficulty getting ~$275. The resale value on these things is spectacular. I was under the impression Burley was making them again. A quick Google search shows a current page on the Burley site and plenty of online retailers claim to have stock. -M -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Jack Browns vs. Pasela vs. ??
A little late here but, I gotta say; The Green Jack Browns are the ticket. I've ridden Pasela Tour guards for years, and the Browns felt like a breath of fresh air. IME they can be run softer than the TGs without the squirmies that Aaron alludes to. I bought two pairs when they came out and three of the four are still rideable. I did add the Panaracer kevlar tire liners when new. Definitely got my money's worth. Another one to consider are the Grand Bois 700x30 Cypres, though that might be too skinny for this bunch. I associate sagging leaf springs with plastic deformation and creep, not a reduction in Young's Modulus. Materials Science wasn't my major, though. [RBW] Re: Jan Heine says I can ride my Bombadil forever!
Well, materials science WAS my major, and Jan is right on the bean in my opinion. I have some bike experience to back it up as well, as my pre-riv bike was a fillet-brazed Schwinn that I bought new in 1971, and still have today. No difference in the ride that i can see. The one way a frame COULD get flexier, is if you get a fatigue crack growing in a highly stressed joint, that will increase compliance and ultimately fail completely. So, if you ever do seem to think your bike isn't as stiff as you remember, better do a thorough check of the frame. The issue with leaf springs is that they operate very close to (and sometimes a bit past) the yield strength of the material, and over time and a few potholes you can permanently deform them. Steel bicycle frames don't operate anywhere near yield. Jim in Boulder On Thursday, March 15, 2012 11:25:53 AM UTC-6, William wrote: OK, that's not a direct quote. Steel bicycle frames don't operate anywhere near yield. Jim in Boulder Not in 'materials science', but grad work in structural geology, and engineering geology, a lot of what we dealt with was in rock deformation (albeit not metal), stress versus strain, plastic deformation versus elastic deformation, tensile strength, etc.; my father was the one who was the machinist (and, aside from bicycles, another hobby of mine is dealing w/ rebuilding old Rovers, which involves working over sheet aluminum, annealing it, etc.), and also taught me a lot. With steel, there's an amount that you can bend it, within the elastic range, where it'll snap back. It can do this repeatedly, over and over. It's when you pass that point, into plastic deformation, that it won't recover. Aluminum, moves from elastic to plastic with much less movement; it's more 'brittle', or, sometimes described as fatigue. Steel, if you don't take it into the plastic range, just keep it within the elastic zone, and it'll remain flexible, and pretty much unphased. Steel tubing is designed to prevent the plastic deformation. Chromoly is alloyed to improve the modulus of elasticity, which would be into Jim's field. Anywho... if it's a good steel alloy, without any manufacturing defects, competently formed into appropriate tubing, skillfully assembled into a frame, and is painted/protected from corrosion, not neglected or left out in the rain for years on end, doesn't suffer any accidents that dent the tubing, well, it should be just fine -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Jan Heine says I can ride my Bombadil forever!
Creep can be a cause of plastic deformation, but it tends to make materials stiffer through a mechanism called dislocation pile-up. If that is happening in a steel frame, it should become stiffer over time, not flexier. Of course, if there are micro-cracks, then material strength is less relevant, as the cracks can make the frame seem flexy.
