*What did you end up doing about food?*

All stuff I normally eat... but a couple bites at a time throughout the
ride... fruit, jerky, cookies, nuts, chocolate, and cheese. I added an Nuun
tablet to one of my water bottles. and I had a can of V8 a little after
halfway through.

I think the best advice I got was about 1) diet... only eating what I'm
used to eating. and 2) pace myself. I followed both and was amazed how
fresh and able to keep riding I was at the end. My biggest fear was that
I'd be dragging myself the last miles to the finish. Fact is that I went
for a ride with my family to get burgers and ice cream when I got home.

The Popularie experience sort of reminded me of the long distance hiking
experience. All these people are doing the same route but equipment and
styles of travel are across the board. We naturally gravitate toward/ end
up traveling/ crossing paths with those who's style is similar to our own.
Camaraderie ensues.

Also similar to LD hiking... the scenery was pretty but the real beauty of
the experience was interacting with the people on and along the ride.

[RBW] Re: Someone scratched my Brooks...advice?

2012-03-18 Thread Minh

 Brett,

Learning to accept scratches (to your brooks or bike) is one of the things
in life that you have to come to on your own. There are a few things you
can do, proofide, saddle soap or obenaufs to try and buff them out, shoe
polish if you want to get more aggresive. None of them will really return
it to new out of the box but they will lessen the effect.

But really, after a few hundred miles it will all blend in with the wear
from your butt (per Rob). and if it's any comfort, imagine how i felt when
i got my first scratch in my $200+ berthoud--caused by me too, if you take
your bike out it will happen eventually. And look at it this way, you'll
never get that characteristically worn in look that old brooks get if you
don't get some scratches into it.

[RBW] What's the verdict on the Foss inner tubes?

What's the verdict on the Foss inner tubes? And do you really have to use
their special rim tape, or will these tubes work with standard kinds of rim
tape just as well? Thanks!

Well, I've not encountered any goat heads since I put the Foss on my custom.
I'm skeptical about how that would/will go.
I'm pretty sure the Foss only works when the offending penetrator remains

Saw some youtube video that was the belts + suspenders approach - Slime in a

Goatheads are famous for being heinous.

[RBW] Epic! Where winds are fierce and men are manly and bikes are steel.

2012-03-18 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I was the only cyclist to brave the winds today -- or, at least I saw
no other -- as I took the Fargo the 17 m rt to church. Winds 46 gusts
to 56 on this side of town (NW -- at the airport to the south, gusts
to 64)) and I found myself at one point standing in the 69 gear on a
downhill. I also almost got blown against the wall along the bridge
over the Rio Grande twice by fierce gusts coming up the river. But the
worst thing was the brownout sand in places -- the ground cover here,
at least when you get more than 1/2 mile from the river, is very
sparse and where it has been disturbed by clearing, even years ago,
immense clouds of fine brown sand are kicked up and fill the air. Odd,
because the last several days have been absolutely beautiful: 7
low 70s, low humidity and very light breezes.

Patrick and I didn't downshift, either except briefly to the 56 for
the one, 2/5 mile steep hill -- wind gusts are like a turbocharger

Excellent! Sounds like you found the perfect pace!

Just a word on sunscreen - I find that if I just put it on when kitting up
before a ride (especially those that start in pre-dawn hours), then when
things turn nice, I don't have to stop to put it on. Now, granted, I am
reasonably fair-skinned and ride in the SF Bay Area - the Queen of the

within a few miles. That also keeps me from simply forgetting to put it on.

[RBW] Re: Rode My First Rando Event Today

2012-03-18 Thread Amit Singh
Congratulations Smitty! Wonderful photos, thanks for posting your ride
report. Can't wait to read and follow your future adventures!

Randonneuring advice. I put much of it to use today and had a successful
ride. The forecast called for 100% chance of rain showers. We got a few
minor sprinkles, lots of clouds and a decent amount of sunshine. I came
prepared for 100k of riding in a downpour. Instead I should have wore
sunscreen. No bonk or nutrition/cramp issues... I believe largely thanks to
tips from the list. My goal was to finish in 6 hours (a little over 10mph
average) and I got my card signed at 5:55. Perhaps I could have pushed
myself and gotten a slightly better time but that would have eaten into my
breaks, conversations, and scenery gazing. I don't really feel the need to
jump right into the longer brevets but it's likely I'll be back for more
 100k rides.

My control card proved it happened, but it's on it's way to France. These
 pics will have to
 suffice.https://picasaweb.google.com/113148323994353762329/OregonRandonneursS...

2012-03-18 Thread Smitty
My que-sheet holder is the Map Case from
Rivhttp://www.rivbike.com/product-p/m4.htm.
It was super great to have the directions right there. Many of the rando
riders had some variation... often on top of their front bag.

Can I get some details on that map case you are using? I'm looking at an

[RBW] Thinning the herd some more. FS a Roadish Rivish Racingish Lugged Steel ride

2012-03-18 Thread William
Up for sale is a modern classic road bike. I acquired this 1984 Trek 770
from the original owner off craigslist. I old off the original campy bits
through the usual channels to finance a much more contemporary Rivish
build. That bike helped convince me that my previous road bike was too
small for me and it convinced me that I wanted to run 700x28 tires (or
wider). Now that I've acquired a bike that will take wide tires and
fenders, I can let go of this classic bike. I'd love to sell it locally,
since it's so expensive to ship a bike. I'm asking $800. Shipping would
be extra, but I'll gladly deliver it in the Bay Area.

It's a 58cm Trek 770. Reynolds 531 standard diameter butted tubing. Campy
dropouts
Campy super record headset and seatpost
Stock avocet saddle
NOS Specialized sealed bearing hubs laced to contemporary Mavic Open Pro
silver rims, 32 hole DT spokes
7 speed NOS Sachs Aris FW 12-28
Maxxis 700x25 tires
Shimano 105 dual pivot brakes
Tektro R200 levers
Suntour retrofriction shifters
Suntour XC pro front der
Shimano XT short cage rear der
SRAM chain
Sugino XD2 double crankset 172.5mm 48/34. Cartridge BB
No pedals

Let me know if you have any questions. Pics here. As pictured, 75.5cm
seat height.

Just make up an elaborate story about a bear tried attacking you while
you were biking. That always works for me.

[RBW] Re: Epic! Where winds are fierce and men are manly and bikes are steel.

2012-03-18 Thread Mojo
I left my wee Mum's house in Four Hills Sunday noon and drove down Tramway
to head back to Colorado. Through the blowing dust we could just make out
two sorry souls (with gears Patrick, gears! though pitiful leg speed) at
the top of the Tramway climb and two more fighting their way back
southeast up the highway towards Bernalillo. There are days to ride and
days to not ride. To every thing there is a purpose under heaven. Amen.

over the Rio Grande twice by fierce gusts coming up the river. But the
worst thing was the brownout sand in places -- the ground cover here,
at least when you get more than 1/2 mile from the river, is very
sparse and where it has been disturbed by clearing, even years ago,
immense clouds of fine brown sand are kicked up and fill the air. Odd,
because the last several days have been absolutely beautiful: 7
low 70s, low humidity and very light breezes.

Patrick and I didn't downshift, either except briefly to the 56 for
the one, 2/5 mile steep hill -- wind gusts are like a turbocharger
