I thought I would introduce myself and show off a photo of my recently
purchased 62 cm Betty Foy. The bike and I reside in Berkeley and our
much-needed rain has kept me from doing a great deal of riding in it during
the last 2 weeks. The few trips I've taken around town and up the bay trail
have been fantastic; I'm hoping to get a lot more riding time soon.

Re: [RBW] Using a Sam Hillborne as a go fast-ish bike

2012-03-27 Thread Brian Hanson
Sean - I'm the same size and age as you and have a 59cm A Homer Hilsen. I
have ridden a 60cm Sam at Riv HQ, and it felt big, but it was set up with
very high bars. I would go for a 56cm if you're doing a light go-fast
config.

I think a Sam could be set up as a go-fast, but it will depend on your
wheel/component choice. My Homer has had a few different configurations
that have ranged from a light-ish (24#) setup sans fenders/rack/lights to
its current config as a randonneur. The beauty of the bike is that it has
a wide range. You will always find a bike that may be better for one
specific config. It sounds like you've found that out.

One of the things I love about my Riv (besides the innate beauty) is that I
love modding it. It's a great platform bike that gets reborn about twice a
year. I haven't found a purpose it didn't pull off well yet. I have fun
building/rebuilding, though, and that's not for everyone.

Re: [RBW] Best rain cover for a Brooks?

2012-03-27 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I use one of the Aardvark covers from Riv these days.
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/s91.htm

I have a couple of actual Brooks covers but I generally don't use them if I
have to be away from my bike because they clearly say Brooks on them. The
Aardvark is cheap (but not shoddy), works great, and as it says in the
promo, it disguises a fine leather saddle.

I also have fenders on all my bikes (which all have some sort of B-17) and
that does keep muck from flying up.

Finally, I never park my bike upside down in the rain. Though I suppose
with enough Obenauf's even that'd be okay for a bit. (And I don't use too
much Obenauf's...once a year when I remember).

Aloha (in Hilo right now where yes, it's raining and yes, the bike I keep
here, currently an RB-1, has a Brooks). :-)

I have used the Carradice B17 covers that Peter White sells for about
two years now. They have held up really well to a lot of riding, are
very waterproof, and I expect them to last a while longer-- very high
quality of construction. Can't discern any damage to my saddles from
either rain or butt sweat after lots of exposure to both.

They're black and drab, but that may help from the anti-theft angle.

[RBW] Re: Using a Sam Hillborne as a go fast-ish bike

2012-03-27 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
Sean,

I just turned 45 and commute on a 56cm Sam pretty much every day.

Commute is 15 miles RT, mostly flat in semi-urban traffic. I am 5'11
and 165-170 lbs.

With Noodles, 32 mm Supremes and a large saddlebag I average about
18-20 mph on the longer flat sections of my commute, sometimes more or
less depending on wind and how long a day it has been. I typically run
60/80 psi front/rear, full fenders and a cheap/heavy rear rack.

I never had a go fast bike to compare with, but I am faster on the
Sam than I was on the Gary Fischer MTB it replaced, and most of the
commuters I see. Guys speeding along on road bike leave me in the dust
most of the time.

[RBW] Using a Sam Hillborne as a go fast-ish bike

2012-03-27 Thread Peter Pesce
I have a Sam that has been set up a few different ways. Like you, I use the Sam
almost exclusively for 20-30 mile fun/exercise rides. I'm not capable of going
fast by any measure, but my Sam is my go fastest. bike.
Whether it will feel lively to you is another question. I think the SH is
pretty stoutly built, especially with two top tubes. My single TT Sam feels
pretty good under my 235 lbs. if you are a lightweight it might feel less so.
As for builds, as an experiment I tried a lightweight build on mine using parts
I had around or could acquire cheaply. Using a WTB saddle (not an exotic one,
just not a Brooks!) super light 28mm tires, and an older SRAM Rival drivettrain
I was able to get the bike to 23 lbs. It still had 36 spoke Dyads with XT hubs
on it, so there is still some weight to be saved on wheels if you wanted to.
I guess the point is you could make a go-fast Sam, but it's not really what the
bike wants to be. Perhaps a Boulder rando frame or something like a Soma
Stanyan would suit you better?

I got my oldest Brooks on my Rambouillet the day before I met the trio
I was joining in Yorktown, VA to do a super light CC ride across the
country. Rational thought would have nixed that last second equipment
change, including a spanking new new B-17 Special. Thanks and trip
report submitted to RBW HQ afterward; Fantastic bike, blind faith,
awesome ride.

By Williamsburg, VA (13 miles) the saddle was like a comfortable club
chair for the rest of the ride. I had only just gotten bar height set
and the fit of saddle was resolved and off the radar. A good thing
as it was my desk chair for the next month and a half.

Still have that saddle on that bike and it serves my needs on both
faster club rides as well as long slogs. Its expected life span would
be longer had I prepared for protecting it from soaking sweat on that
XC ride. Soon found a plain shower cap in a country convenience store,
contingency resolved, but effects beginning to show.

Maybe a Brooks (never rained on) actually has a service life despite
the initial reaction and trepidations of first time users.

[RBW] Re: How long did your Brooks saddle take to break in?

2012-03-27 Thread Aaron VanDerlip
The B-17 and its closely related cousins use the stiffest leather
available from Brooks. Brooks also has a B-17 Aged model that promises
to be comfortable from day one. My experience with the Flyer and B67
is that these other saddles are much softer and ready to ride out of
the box. With the other saddles you can push down with a finger and
they leather has some give in contrast to the B-17 which more like a
piece of wood. A couple of hundred miles for the B-17 sounds about
right, being generous with the Proofride at the beginning will likely
speed up the process due to the oil content softening the leather.

[RBW] Re: My Grilver AHH

2012-03-27 Thread Brian Campbell
Thanks! Glad it finally worked. As for the Imperial saddle, I like it quite
a bit. It replaced a well worn B-17 Champion Special and I have not missed
it. Funny thing about the color is it was a mistake. When I ordered the
frame, Iasked that it be painted green. It came back grilver. Keven was
very sorry and offered to to re-paint it any color I wanted at no
additional cost. The color grew on me and Riv gave me a discount for my
troubles so everything worked out.

The build is:

61cm AHH
46cm Noodle bars
10 speed 11-36 cassetts w/ Shimano 10 speed bar end shifters
Open Pro's w Ultegra hubs 35mm Vittoria Hyper Randos

Campagnolo Record front derailer
Electra Tincino Crank arms
VO 46/30 50.4 Chainrings
Honjo La Paeon(?) fenders
Marks Rack (Actually IS Mark's rack. He sold me his extra)
Acorn Rando bag front
Acorn small bag rear
Brooks Imperial
Nitto 65 Post

[RBW] Re: Using a Sam Hillborne as a go fast-ish bike

2012-03-27 Thread Adam
When I have my Sam set up without racks and noodles it goes fastish. A
light wheel set makes all the difference in my mind. With that set up
I can keep up with my slower roadie friends.

It is a wonderfully versatile bike as I have also thrown racks on and
toured for weeks on end. That said you already have a dedicated tourer
in the 520 so that might not be such a selling point.

Going to ride my lightish setup in my first randonuer event at the San
Francisco populaire this weekend. I imagine it'll be plenty fast
enough.

Hope this is helpful somehow.

Good luck,
Adam

Can I do this with a Sam as well?

I'm pushing 45 years old.  A few years ago I had a custom made go-fast bike

one that will be able to carry a few bags and ride on stone dust bike paths
(such as the Erie Canal path), but one that will not feel sluggish to ride
 (like my Trek).

Most of the time, when I see photos of Sams, the bikes seem to be set up to
be workhorses -- carrying a collection of bags and racks.  I want to be
able to do this with a bike (thus the attraction to the bike in the first
place).  However, I would like to use noodle bars and go on fast-ish club
and recreational rides as well.  In fact, the vast majority of rides will
be  20 - 30 mile out for fun and exercise rides.  Is the Sam well suited
to this as well, or will it likely feel more like my Trek 520?  Most likely
I would set up a Sam with Noodle bars and tires such as Roly-Poly or Jack
 Browns.

I'm also considering having a custom built randonneur bike -- one that will
be able to carry some load but also feel quick and lively to ride.
However, if the Sam will meet my needs, it certainly would be a less
expensive alternative.  I don't think that my body has any proportions that
would make me difficult to fit (5ft, 11 inches tall, PBH 87.5, arm length
35 inches) so I don't think that I *need* to go custom (though it sure is
 fun to do so!).

Any thoughts on whether a Sam would be a good choice would be appreciated.

I did a ride last night on my Sam, 19 mph average for about 22 miles,
fairly flat. I have it set up with bar end friction shifters, noodles,
pari moto tires on 36 spoke, velocity dyad/phil rivy 7 speed hub wheels. I
wouldn't say it is a go fast bike, but if you want to push it you certainly
can on the Sam. I couldn't keep up with the fast group on the ride, but I
did pull a small paceline at that speed. I don't really consider that fast
though, and the Roadies generally go faster than that.

Frankly, I have been looking hard at a Roadeo for these kinds of rides. I
really wonder what the speed difference would be.

The obvious choice are Grand Bois Hetres (42mm). Super low rolling
resistance and pretty low weight, fat enough for serious off-roading,
seem to last 3-5000 miles (if memory of other people's posts serves).
Best tire ever made, IMHO. If you really want to go skinny, go Grand
Bois Cypres (32mm).

[RBW] Re: 650b Alternatives to Pari Motos.

2012-03-27 Thread William
The Grand Bois Lierre also seems to get a lot of love. I've been very
impressed with the Soma 650x38 tires. I have lots of miles on the New
Express which is their flat resistant version. I guess it should ride
badly since it has a reinforced casing, but I've found it to be a very nice
riding tire. I bought a set of their non-reinforce B-Line, but I've not
ridden them. I recommend the Soma tires without reservation.

Like you I get a flat on my Pari-Motos practically every long ride I go on.
So I'll put them on, do a short ride and love them, then do a brevet and
flat (or two) and take them back off. That cycle has gone several times
now. They are back on now, with Foss tubes. I'm in a similar situation
trying to love Hetres. I'm one of the people who has a hard time getting
them to run true on Velocity rims. Also, my Hilsen *barely* takes Hetres
with fenders. I've finally decided that I'm just not going to run 42s on
the Hilsen at all. I believe your Sam might have the same clearances. I'm
now running the Hetres on my Bombadil for commuting.

[RBW] Re: How long did your Brooks saddle take to break in?

2012-03-27 Thread Jim
I'm in the unique position of having a 42 year old B-17 on my old Schwinn
SS from the early 70s, and a 4-month old one on my Homer. The old one is
significantly more compliant than the new one, and rides very comfortably.
I've been riding in 15 mile chunks or less, and been riding the new saddle
to break it in, but if I were to do a longer ride, i'd probably swap in the
old one. The new one, though harder, hits my sitbones just right, it's
quite comfortable for the types of riding I do, but I still think I'm going
to take it off and slather up the inside surface with Oberhaufs to get just
a bit more give to it. I think if I could do that, it might be as comfy or
even more comfy than the old one (the old one may just need to be tightened
up some as well)

 awesome ride.

By Williamsburg, VA (13 miles) the saddle was like a comfortable club

as it was my desk chair for the next month and a half.

[RBW] Re: Best rain cover for a Brooks?

2012-03-27 Thread Jim
Do any of these covers provide UV protection? Is UV an issue for a leather
saddle?, i think it would be, it is for car interiors. We are at 5600 feet

bike is parked during the workday gets a lot of sun, i'm definitely
concerned about this as summer approaches.

[RBW] Re: New Drivetrain for my Atlantis

2012-03-27 Thread Bill M.
CK hubs are nice but they may not play nicely with a Campy group.
See:

http://chrisking.com/node/40

Modern Campy parts may not give you the gearing range you want for
touring, they are pretty much focused on the sport/racing end of
cycling. 34/29 is as low as a current Campy group will handle. I
have that setup on my go-fast and it's fine for unloaded riding in
hilly territory, but I wouldn't tour with it.

You might consider using SRAM parts instead, which would work with
your current wheels. You'd be limited to a double crank, but I have a
bike with Apex derailleurs and a 46/30 crankset without issue. Apex
will handle a 32 tooth cog in back, and you could sub a SRAM mountain
derailleur to swing a 36 if need be.

[RBW] Re: Curiosity is Killing Me

2012-03-27 Thread Bill M.
Setback seatposts are the norm with a Brooks, no problem there. Just
guessing from the photos, but if you're really an 84 PBH I'd say your
saddle was too low. Got a picture of you on the bike?

A 56 Sam is effectively bigger than the 58 Saluki you thought was too
big. You'd be left with nearly zero standover, which may or may not
suit you.

A 52 Sam would effectively be a wash with the 54 Homer, not much to
gain there.

A 56 Homer would be slightly bigger than your 54, but to get that same
bar height you'll still need a stem with a very long quill.

If you feel cramped on the Homer as it is, I'd try a stem with a
longer forward extension, or a handlebar without so much pullback
before switching frames. It's cheaper and you'll learn a lot from the
changes that would inform your next bike purchase.

a 58cm Saluki that just felt too big I thought maybe he was off or
that I just feel more comfortable on a smaller frame but notice that I
am trying to stretch the frame with a long stem and setback seatpost
so maybe he is on to something. I hate to be that guy that jumps from

is if I was to shift my Hilsen frame for the 52 Sam is this just a
lateral move or would there be a significant difference that I would
feel?  If anyone has a 56 Hilsen for a straight trade or has any other
creative ideas I would be open to hear them.  I really do love the
unique color of the Hilsen I got from Joe and that it is actually one
of the older Salukis (SA 0193) that was badged a Hilsen which also

that was just a lateral move. Thanks to anyone who can help me with my

[RBW] Re: What eye protection do y'all use when riding?

2012-03-27 Thread Bill M.
Wearing some kind of UV blocking lens when spending long hours in bright
sun is a good idea.

These days, I wear prescription progressive bifocals (so I can see clearly
in the distance and still read a map, phone, computer, etc.), with
photochromic lenses (darken in the sun).

One odd thing with the photochromic lenses - if I wear them with a visor
(say a Walz cap under my helmet), the part of the lens that gets shaded by
the visor does not darken as much as the portion that's not shaded. That
can be kind of disconcerting. OTOH, a fully tinted lens is no good for me
in dim light, like indoors or when the sun is down, and I don't want to
carry a second pair of glasses.

When I used contact lenses, I wore $10 safety glasses from Lowe's over
them. They block UV, and were so cheap I wasn't worried about scratching
or losing a pair.

As for smearing, some lenses sit so close that my eyelashes touch the
lenses. That will quickly leave a smudge in the worst possible spot, so I
have to select glasses that don't allow that contact. If they slip down
your nose, use a Croakie to keep them in place.

I generally just wear a cycling cap for the shade (from wind as well
as sun) and to act as a sweat reservoir, but then I don't ride 100
miles at a stretch. I used to give myself headaches as a lad wearing
heavy glass lenses in slippery, ill fitting, blacl plastic frames when
I tried to hold them on my Asian nose with my face muscles.

[RBW] Using a Sam Hillborne as a go fast-ish bike

Sean: I think a Sam would be a great choice for your needs. I'm of similar mind
and size: 46 years, 6'1 with a 88 pbh. I ride a 60 Sam. Its a little tight
when standing over it but i dont do that much. When I'm in the saddle its the
most comfortable bike I've ever had. Right now I've got it set up pretty light
and fast. No fenders or racks. Just my brand v saddle bag. Clamp on downtube
shifters and Specialized Infinity 38 tires. Going with Kojaks (35s) when it
gets more summery. I've had it built up heavy too. It's such a great platform.
I love experimenting with it. There's so many ways to set it up. I'm so
enthralled with my orange, single tt, canti braked version that I went ahead
and signed on for the new bleu 2tt, side pull. I'm looking forward to the ease
of use and set up of the side pull brakes and at my size the second top tube
can't hurt. All that PLUS the fancy paint? I like the way Grant and Riv do
things. It's a great deal. I would think that if you get one it will become
your favorite. It can be your go fast and everything your other bikes do too!

There is a very easy way to tell if you have a proper crankset for your
bike.
Look at the photo.
Do your chainrings match those on either of these Salukis?
If so you have chosen well.

Well, Its not just Riv items, I currently have about a dozen things for
sale on eBay and with 2 days to go, I'm raking it in.
Two items are going for more than retail and one item is getting close.

My stuff is bike and fire department related items and I was just trying to
start cleaning out my basement. Some people just want something and bu it,
price be damned. Others just may not know any better and bid anyway, not
knowing that they could get it elsewhere for less.

[RBW] Re: That Ebay Thing

2012-03-27 Thread Hiawatha Cyclery
I believe there's a not insignificant portion of the bicycle
enthusiast community who look to ebay, craigslist, swap meets, etc,
first, and only deal with retail bicycle outlets as a last resort. We
certainly see it on the repair end, where people do horrific things to
fix minor mechanicals or fit issues, when we might have done it
correctly for free or for a trivial amount of money. There's even a
reluctance to physically bring a bike in for a repair estimate, or
when they do, there's reluctance to confess all the problems they have
with the bike. I think this distrust of brick-and-mortar bike shops
and online bike shops like Riv, have fueled a healthy market for
market prices and even inflated prices on the gray-market.

On Mar 23, 1:28 pm, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote:

OK, just kidding.  It is amusing when people will pay more than retail on
ebay for an item that is readily available elsewhere.  The seller started
the auction at $5, so it's likely just one of those weird micro economic
 anomalies.

it is currently selling  $27 with shipping, you can get the same hat
for $16.00 on the rivbike site. Even if that is the only thing you get
and you pay the shipping its only $24.00, a 3 dollar savings and the
ebay auction isnt even over yet.  I doubt rivendell has any problem
moving bikes because they are amazing and known nationwide for thier
bikes but having worked in retail the smalls as we knew them can
also generate a huge amount of revenue and let some people who cant
afford the bikes at least get some rivendellian swag. I have rarely if

sure if this is on purpose or due to lack of funds for advertising but
it seems like when I see the stuff on ebay and CL it goes for more

[RBW] frameset trade: 1988 Miyata 1000 57 cm for a 1985 Trek 720 56 cm

2012-03-27 Thread Alex
Hi all:

I'd like to propose a frameset trade. It doesn't involve Rivendells,
but i think you might still be interested. (For the record, i ride a
2006 Rivendell Rambouillet 58 cm.)

I have an excellent condition 1988 Miyata 1000 57 cm frameset (http://
www.miyatacatalogs.com/2007/12/miyata-catalog-1988.html) that doesn't
get much use and that i'd like to trade for a 1985 Trek 720 56 cm
frameset, because i'm fond of vintage Treks. Anyone keen?

I live in Auckland, NZ and will be on a Stateside visit (east and west
coast) in late August and early September and can bring the frameset
then.

Thanks for your attention.

[RBW] Re: New Drivetrain for my Atlantis

2012-03-27 Thread Bill M.
Your CK hubs won't play well with Campy. Campy cassettes won't fit, and
they can't be converted. Shimano/SRAM cassette spacing is slightly
different from Campy's so the shifting may not be quite right if you mix
them.

If you want modern brifters and touring gears take a look at SRAM Apex, or
maybe combine one of their off-road groups with Apex levers. Your wheels
will work with a SRAM cassette.

[RBW] Re: Curiosity is Killing Me

2012-03-27 Thread Chris
It sounds like it's time to make a day trip to Harris Cyclery or Rivendell
HQ. You'll probably have to take a red eye back to NYC for the trip to
SFO, but that'll give you more time. Maybe you can hit up Jitensha in
Berkeley also.

Not to complicate things even more, but have you considered the 55cm Betty
Foy? It's 650B and your PBH is within its range. The ride is really
smooth and lively. One friend with a lot of biking experience says that
it rides like butter. I often find myself taking wife's Betty Foy over
the Sam if situation allows. And it'll be great to a child seat on (aren't
you looking to put a child seat on the bike?). With a child seat, you
can't cross over your leg over the back of the bike (the seat will be in
the way). You'll have to cross over the top tube, which can be quite
annoying/challenging. With a mixte, this won't be an issue. Just another
thing to consider.

On Wednesday, March 21, 2012 9:56:53 PM UTC-4, Peter M wrote:

So the new Sam has me wondering, is my bike just too small? I had a
long convo with Keven on the clock at work today which was doubly nice
and he was trying to bang into my head that my 54 Hilsen is just too
small for someone with a 84pbh and who comes in at 250lbs. Having had
a 58cm Saluki that just felt too big I thought maybe he was off or
that I just feel more comfortable on a smaller frame but notice that I
am trying to stretch the frame with a long stem and setback seatpost
so maybe he is on to something. I hate to be that guy that jumps from
bike to bike but I would love to find one that was just right and I
am not sure I am there yet. I love the 650b wheels with the Hetres
and would hate to lose that by going up to the 56 Sam or 58 Atlantis
or 54 Hunqapillar, although those are all awesome bikes. My question
is if I was to shift my Hilsen frame for the 52 Sam is this just a
lateral move or would there be a significant difference that I would
feel? If anyone has a 56 Hilsen for a straight trade or has any other
creative ideas I would be open to hear them. I really do love the
unique color of the Hilsen I got from Joe and that it is actually one
of the older Salukis (SA 0193) that was badged a Hilsen which also
makes it somewhat unique so I would hate to give it up for something
that was just a lateral move. Thanks to anyone who can help me with my
ramblings here. Oh, link to my latest ride photos

[RBW] Re: Best rain cover for a Brooks?

2012-03-27 Thread Peter Pesce
That's a good point, Jim.

I'm not sure many people consider the amount of UV a bike that is used for
daily transportation gets. I know I don't, or didn't, until now.
If you lock your bike up outside a lot (perhaps less an issue for Riv
owners) not only the saddle, but the tires, bar tape, brake hoods and cable
housings get a pretty good UV bath. Fenders help the tires a bit, I guess.

I'm sure UV is no good for leather, so any cover would help some. I use my
aardvark cover for theft deterrence and rain defense. Guess I'm getting UV
defense too in the bargain.

please give this one your consideration. I have left the original silver
Blackburn rack and cages attached. Currently, the original Stronglight

original BB and Shimano 600 triple crank if you'd like. Just want the
frame to find the right-sized rider! Please write me off-list, and let's
work something out. I can send photos via email, and

[RBW] Re: AHH 56, 57 compare contrast?

2012-03-27 Thread William
I could have gone 58 650B or 59 700C. I went 58 650B, and I am very happy
I did. I use it as a sporty brevet bike, and the pavement quality in the
SF Bay Area is mixed. I really like the ability to run wide cushy tires
that still roll very fast when I'm going to be on the bike for 9 hours or
more. I've got a set of 700c wheels for it, which work with 28mm tires (no
fenders) and short reach brakes. It's not noticeably faster (to me) with
those wheels and it is noticeably less cushy, so I pretty much never use
that wheelset now, especially since I now have a more normal 700c road bike
to use in my stable.

I am absolutely confident I would have loved a 59 700c Hilsen also. I
sometimes think it would be cool to buy one. Grant has one of each.

I've never used them either, but I've always heard how badly they affect
ride. As for any flat protection qualities, I myself never found Pari
Motos to be flat prone. However, there is no way whatever they could
extend the service life of the tire, which is limited by the tread
thickness. In all, I'd consider this to be a really, really bad idea.

What is the best way to protect a leather saddle from the rain?  I
know there are various saddle covers, but I see more people with a
plastic bag over their seats.  What about the underside?  Do fenders
stop the water spray well enough?
