[RBW] Acquired a Roadeo, so selling a Salsa

2012-04-15 Thread Forrest
In keeping with my only-own-two-bikes-at-a-time rule (though I admit the
rotation is dizzyingly frequent), I am selling a nice Salsa frame set to
make room for a new Roadeo (new to me).

More details and asking price to come later, but it is a 58cm Salsa La Cruz
Ti (they're not made any more). Info at the first link below, and links to
two photos of mine below that.

[RBW] Poster Update - Twice as Fun!

2012-04-15 Thread Marty
My recent post announcing the Rivendell Model poster was a big hit. Nearly
1,000 views to date, and lots of nice feedback. Some of you asked if I
could print some to sell, and the short answer is yes. But wait! What you
didn't know is that I was working on another poster - one that may just
blow you away completely. With Grant's blessing - and generous loan of some
Rivendell history - I assembled the ultimate collector's dream: one of
every headbadge ever used on a Rivendell model! After way too much time and
mind-numbing Photoshopping, I came up with this:

*
*
What you'll see is an appetizer, (low res and all) but I'm offering prints
for sale to the Bunch. (Again, with Grant's blessing - thanks GP!) Details
are on the Flickr page, but the bottom line is $25 + shipping. Send me a
note here (off-line please) or through Flickr and we'll work out the
details. Please be patient as my travel schedule is variable.

Just one more thing...

I've re-designed the Models poster to match the badgey one - complete
with the Baggins-like tan canvas border. (link below) You can buy that one
too if poster-matching is your thing, otherwise the black-bordered version
remains on-line at full res. I printed a few myself this weekend and they
turned out great. Want both? Let's work out a package deal. This was a fun
project, but if I add up the hours I would never do anything like it again,
and I have a few more ideas brewing...

*
*
Thanks for your interest and support. This is a great Bunch!

Marty

Gearing for the worst, hoping for a break...
I'm doing a daily rain dance... BRING IT, I say. (Hopefully wishing
for rain will have a reverse effect)...

Regardless I've got my full-size Cascadia fenders mounted, and my
rainproof saddle cover (I'll also add a little more Proofide,
especially to the underside).
Next I'll pack everything in Hefty trash bags inside my so-called
waterproof Ortliebs.
I've got a pretty good rain jacket (and rain pants, especially given
that it may be cold).
And I'll wear whatever wool I own.

Any other tips from folks who regularly ride in the rain?

I mightily resisted the Moustaches for many years. I ran Noodles and

I tried the Moustaches on a whim, and now they're the only ones I use. I
commute on them, do centuries, group pacelines, everything you can think

[RBW] Re: What is the best 28-30 mm 700c tire for fast riding on pavement?

2012-04-15 Thread benzzoy
I've tried both the Challenge Parigi-Roubaix and the Grand Bois
Cypres. Compared to the Jack Brown Greens (my best all-rounder),
they both appear to roll better. The PR wins my best list by being a
better tire for cornering - both are quite sticky, but the PR tracks
predictably and the Cypres tends to wallow. I ride in Northern
California where we have a lot of curvy technical descents so this
characteristic is important to me.

Both have fairly thin treads and have about the same puncture
resistance (very little) but are a joy to ride when the conditions are
right. If you've ever tried Vittoria's Open Corsa CX 25s, the PRs feel
like fatter OCs. I love the PRs so much that most of my fat tire-
capable bikes are shodden with these.

the teeth end in sharp points like a shark fin.

info: both frames are in excellent condition with a little riding wear

63cm A Homer Hilsen in the classic blue/cream paint. I had the SS
couplers installed after-market by Bilenky for about $1K including the
repaint which is flawlessly matched, I am the original owner. Sugino
triple crank, 9 speed rear casette, Silver downtube shifters,
shellacked cloth bar tape, Tektro long reaach side-pull calipers, VO
hammer fenders, Nitto Noodle bar (I think it's 42 wide), no pedals,
and the spare wheel on the rack in the rear is not included! Wheels
are Phil Wood rear hub 36 holes on Velocity O/C rim, front hub is
Schmidt Dyno hub 36 hole on matching Velocity rim to rear, but not O/C
since it's in the front! Includes a Schmidt E6 light and bracket,
Brooks sprung saddle in brown that shows a little wear, but has years
of life in it and has been maintained regularly with proofide,
Schwalbe 32mm tires, wheels built by Peter White Cycles. Phil Wood

60cm Bombadil - built like a serious touring bike - last of the
parallel top tubes, I am the original owner!!! Phil Wood front and
rear hubs, with 40 spokes laced to Velocity Dyad rims, VO hammered
fenders, Sugino Triple crankset, Phil BB, shimano 9 speed rear
derailleur and casette with Shimano barcons, shellacked cloth bar
tape, Nitto noodle bar (I think it's 42 wide), Schwalbe marathon
tires, Brooks B17 special (copper rivets) saddle, shows a little wear
but has been maintained with proofide. Clear coat paint finish shows
the metal construction and brazing underneath - it's gorgeous and it's
not rusting. I think that whole controversy was a red herring
anyway. Tubus racks NOT included in price, but available for extra.

I agree. Both of those answers are probably the two most likely
suspects. Your old chain and your cassette wore together, and when you
put the new chain on, it revealed the wear in the cassette that was
hidden before.

RE: [RBW] Re: New chain skipping

2012-04-15 Thread Joe Bartoe

That would be the answer. Replacing a worn chain resulting in skipping should
always make you think worn cassette. If no amount of adjusting dials it in,
it's time for a new cassette.

I didn't see the original thread here, but if you're using a master link, make
sure it's installed properly. If it isn't seated properly, it may be shorter
than it should be at that link. If you have a Wipperman link, there's an
orientation that you need to worry about. Barring that, new cassette.

[RBW] New chain skipping

2012-04-15 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Most new chains are not intended to be installed with a chain tool. If you did
install it with a chain tool, check for a stiff link. The easy way is to stand
beside the bike while smoothly rotating the crank backward with your hand.
You'll see the stiff link as it passes through the rear dérailleur. If it's
smooth, then, as others have suggested, replace the cassette or freewheel.

[RBW] Bi-State s36o... Cascadia Style

In case you haven't looked at a map lately... the southern WA Cascades are
pretty accessible from Portland, OR. A buddy laid out the route to Sunset

I've been on a coupe multi-night bike camping trips with my family but this

[RBW] FS: Arkel bags and Dapper Dan grips

$50 - Arkel Big Bar Bag in very good condition; black, 5+ years old, unused for
last three years. Missing mounting hardware. New mounting hardware available

Pics
at: http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/7568778/1/bicycle%20cycling/Arkel%20Big%20Bar%20Bag?h=a8effb

$25 - Dapper Dan leather grips, light brown color (don't recall official color
name)... Gently used

$25 - Dapper Dan leather grips, dark brown color (don't recall official color
name) - Gently used (if at all... I may or may not have even ridden with them)

Pics for both at:
http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/7568778/1/bicycle%20cycling/Dapper%20Dan?h=a8effb

All prices include shipping within contiguous US.

Both bags were used on a few family camping trips and recreational rides.
Obviously good quality products. Now I just really prefer the
canvas/leather/brass-or-steel style more akin to Acorn, Berthoud, Carradice,
Duluth Pack, they-who-should-not-be-named, RBW, etc. I do still have my Arkel
T-42 and T-28 panniers; when it comes to multi-night family camping, where
organization and some degree of efficiency in access is a priority, I'll still
likely choose those. Everything else... ah, the soft canvas life!

With the grips, I found I prefer either wood or cork to leather.

I'm funding the build of Samuel Green Hillborne, younger brother to Samuel
Orange Hillborne. Redundancy: your key to quality commuting!

Here's a kicker: will accept dollar payment only in the form of an RBW gift
certificate. No Paypal, no checks. OR, if you have something RBW-ish to trade
that you think is worth similar money, I'll certainly consider it. Just let me
know.

Please contact me off-list if interested. Thanks!

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean
