RE: [RBW] Re: Looking for park repair stand parts

2012-05-14 Thread Joe Bartoe

Hi Marty,

I'm looking for parts for a stand alone repair stand. I have the clamp and the
portion that the clamp attaches to and allows for rotation of the clamp. The
parts I need essentially would be the pole and the base plate. I was hoping to
find someone who might have picked up something like this and had it laying
around.

Thanks for the offer!

Joe - I have the 90 degree benchmount for the stand in this picture that I
could let go. Not sure if it's what you need, or could make work. It would need
the folding screw-clamp on the top for rotation as that is in use on the pole
stand.

Let me know if it would work and we'll go from there.

Marty

Thanks for the suggestions to try that approach!

Anyway, Phil w/ the same Mavic skewers led to zero slippage. I rode the
same route (although a bit slower due to a headache) as last week. I
purposely left the skewer a bit looser than I was using it on the other
wheelset (Dura Ace converted to 135 spacing). Not a problem at all!

Soo, some combination of the DA wheelset with the bike is leading
to wheel slippage. I'm gong to get the dish checked out as suggested, maybe
that is it? I noticed the DA clamping surface isn't fully flat. The edges
are beveled so there's not as much contact (why?). There's maybe only
50-75% the contact surface that the Phil hubs have. Possibly part of the
problem. Buut, I have the same hubs on my other Riv w/ horizontal drop
outs (DA skewers) and those never slip.

Side note: This problem has been progressive. The DA wheelset is
probably three or four years old. No problems with my old wheelset, and
problems with the DA one seems to have come on slowly. An occasional need
to recenter here or there, but not several times during a ride like it is
 now.

So I'm currently back in love with my bike, but want all my wheels to
work. Things are getting curioser and curioser...

Thanks again for the info and input on this, I'm really trying to
 figure it out!

[RBW] Re: Platrack struts

2012-05-14 Thread ted
If you look at the original platrack struts they are bent right at the
edge of the flattened out part with the whole in it (as opposed to the
round part where folks frequently bend em).
When I adjusted the angle on one of mine I used a crescent wrench with
some cardboard from a tube box to protect the surface of the strut.
That worked fine for a minor adjustment. Might or might not work as
well for bending from straight.

I think when the riv videos show mark doing something like that, he
generally puts the struts into a clamp and then gives em a bang with the
rubber mallet. i would guess you will get better results if you go that

[RBW] Platrack struts

2012-05-14 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean

Hi, folks!

I need to deploy some of the 42cm "replacement" struts that RBW sells in
service of a front-mounting a Platrack.

I have the struts. Turns out that the holed tabs to attach to the dropouts
aren't angled as they are on the struts one gets with a Platrack.

(Don't ask me why the product name "42cm straight struts" did not mentally
prepare me for the arrival of struts that are in fact 42cm long and, in
fact, straight.)

So... other than me just grabbing some pliers and gently (oh so gently!)
bending the holed tabs to an appropriate angle, is there anything I should
do to keep from damaging or weakening the structure they'll support? Any
special techniques to use? Any incantations? Offerings?

When use my front-mounted Platrack, I don't want to feel I have to treat it
particularly delicately.

Thanks!

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] Re: Looking for park repair stand parts

2012-05-14 Thread Marty
Joe - I have the 90 degree benchmount for the stand in this picture that I
could let go. Not sure if it's what you need, or could make work. It would
need the folding screw-clamp on the top for rotation as that is in use on
the pole stand.

[RBW] Re: Friction Shifting and Riding Tips?

2012-05-14 Thread Zack
I find this to be relatively amusing:

One of the tips in here was to switch to a compact double.

Well, last week, I was in traffic in our downtown and pushed down with a
ton of force to get up to speed really quickly at a green light. I am a
big dude, and I ended up driving my sneaker down into my FD, which ripped
the FD downward, right into the big ring on my triple. what a mess!

i am switching to a compact double as I had to get a new chainring and FD
anyways. good times.

Yeah, QB.

I may have a dalliance with my Hilsen for a while, if I've got serious
climbing to do, or (recently, as time has been a bit limited) with my old
SS'd MB1. But, then I'll climb back on the Quickbeam and there's just
"something" about that bike. It always whispers "further" on any ride,
resists not at all when the trails tempt us, and is patient when the engine
needs a rest.

Did you see this on the Paul site:

http://www.paulcomp.com/braketech.html

Also, "soft at the lever" does mean more power at the rim. The trick is to
find the balance between powerful and not bottoming out on the handlebar.

AASHTA - still the best reference for understanding the variables of yoke

RE: [RBW] Paul Racer Set Up

2012-05-14 Thread Marc Schwartz
Brian,
Don't know if I'm doin' it right, but I use the spring tension in each side to
fine adjust the respective pad distance for each side, not obsessing about
keeping tension even side-to-side. For power, I keep the yoke close to the
brake and the yoke cable short. Am eager to find out if this is correct, or how
to do it proper if not.

Uneven distance from the rim for the pads, even with the springs set to the
same tension. Front lever feels soft and can almost reach the bar when squeezed
hard. Front brake seems as if it should have more stopping power.

[RBW] Group response - Stolen Rivendell Posted on Ebay

2012-05-14 Thread Pam Ellen Hudson
What a great group - Good luck getting the bike back!! I wouldn't want
to own a bike with that history, for one. Bad karma.

My other thought is that if the seller is an actual business - you
could bring a suit for conversion or other torts. . .

BTW, I'm still looking for Manny's bike to show up here in Ventura and/
or Los Angeles. . . .I know he's North but you never know . . .

All my family's early bikes (1978 Raleigh, 1980 Mongoose, 1987
Raleigh, and 1988 Ross) were lost due to theft. . .so I'm sensitive to
this topic.

[RBW] Re: My Quickbeam

2012-05-14 Thread Bryan
For me, the White Industries Dos Eno freewheel really opened up my
Quickbeam to a lot of possibilities. I hate having to flip a wheel
around while out on a ride, so i would never do it, but moving the
chain from one cog to the other on the same side of the wheel is
really easy. It's enabled me to do all sorts of riding in the
mountains of Southern California that I wouldn't have done if I was
stuck in my 40/16 commuting gear.

[RBW] Re: My Quickbeam

2012-05-14 Thread Peter Pesce
Jared-
It depends a bit on terrain and load. As Kelly noted getting the gearing
right is key for terrain. I'm also riding 40x16 on my QB and it works fine
for modest hills, but I might go down to 40x18 for the summer just so I
don't get as sweaty on my commute!
For "shopping" it will be fine if you and/or your load aren't too big. I'm
230 and feel I'm right at the top end for the QB frame, so I would be
reluctant to put much more than my briefcase on it. (I had almost 50 lbs of
groceries on my LHT yesterday with no problems, though!)

[RBW] Re: My Quickbeam

2012-05-14 Thread Kelly
Jared,

it would do all those things. For me it would be a pain if there were
loads of hills. Even with it geared rather low 40x16. Gearing has been
my biggest challenge. Finding the spot that is fast enough on the flats,
and that doesn't kill me on hills or headwinds. It's close now, but still
tinkering.

Ah, that would make sense, maybe a call to Riv HQ is in order. I unfortunately
work in one of these bloombergian open offices so calling about bike stuff at
work can be iffy. I wonder if they would let me put a deposit down, doubtful

Re: [RBW] Re: ISO 52cm Bomadil

2012-05-14 Thread William
I think that the real going rate for a totally new, built-to-order
diagatube Bombadil (with even more tire clearance), is $2.7k Only the 48,
which has no 2TT is $2k, anymore. The price doesn't update when you pick a
52 from the dropdown menu, but the text talks about the range. Call to
make sure.

Oh no! I didn't know the Snow Peak spork came in a short model. That's the
danger of reading this list! I've often thought of trimming down the handle of
the Snow Peak spork (regular sized) in my saddle bag, but can't ever bring

Ok, I thought I would go out on a limb here and make a dedicated
posting to see if anyone has a 52cm Bombadil they were thinking of
selling. I know this is a long shot but cant justify getting one at
full price at least until late June when the camping adventures begin
with my daughter and thought I would throw out a line seeing if anyone
had one they were looking to sell. I know I have been told it is a
real long shot so not expecting any miracles here, haha. I was
looking for the old parallel tt style model but I am open to other
options. Thanks and safe riding.

[RBW] Re: Grant's visit to PDX

2012-05-14 Thread Allan in Portland
Thanks for the photos Michael. I wasn't able to put any names to faces (and
bikes) like I'd somewhat hoped, but that's cool too. Kind of maintains the
mystery. :-)

The talk was pretty interesting, but only after giving it a day. At first I
was a little disappointed that it seemed more aimed at Oprah's book club,
while I was hoping more for a sermon to the choir... yeah, I know the book
isn't so much aimed at the choir, but anyone going to hear an author talk
on one of the nicest Saturday's Portland has had this year is I think safe
to assume part of the choir. Or at least knows Grant, knows Rivendell, and
knows the virtues of steel, leather, & cork. Maybe that can't be said for
everywhere, but in Portland, I don't think it a stretch.

The one thing I'll say is that it surprised me that Grant hasn't always
been the "unracer" he is today. He has been as long as I've known of him,
about 2005 or so, but that was a relatively recent conversion of his. Since
I was already more or less an "unracer" when I discovered him, I always
thought of him as an "unracer" and appreciated it that here was a guy
sympatico with myself, and a lot more knowledgeable about it.

So after thinking about it, and realizing that it took Grant
20-some-odd-years to become an unracer, there probably are a lot of people
out there needing to unrace themselves, and probably even a few on this
list.

Regards,
-Allan

[RBW] Re: Stolen Rivendell on ebay

2012-05-14 Thread Imladris
Looks like this is a felony of the 5th degree under Ohio law (that is,
being in receipt of stolen property and having reasonable cause to
believe so).

2913.51 Receiving stolen property.
(A) No person shall receive, retain, or dispose of property of another
knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that the property has
been obtained through commission of a theft offense.

(B) It is not a defense to a charge of receiving stolen property in
violation of this section that the property was obtained by means
other than through the commission of a theft offense if the property
was explicitly represented to the accused person as being obtained
through the commission of a theft offense.

(C) Whoever violates this section is guilty of receiving stolen
property. Except as otherwise provided in this division, receiving
stolen property is a misdemeanor of the first degree. If the value of
the property involved is one thousand dollars or more and is less than
seven thousand five hundred dollars, if the property involved is any
of the property listed in section 2913.71 of the Revised Code,
receiving stolen property is a felony of the fifth degree. If the
property involved is a motor vehicle, as defined in section 4501.01 of
the Revised Code, if the property involved is a dangerous drug, as
defined in section 4729.01 of the Revised Code, if the value of the
property involved is seven thousand five hundred dollars or more and
is less than one hundred fifty thousand dollars, or if the property
involved is a firearm or dangerous ordnance, as defined in section
2923.11 of the Revised Code, receiving stolen property is a felony of
the fourth degree. If the value of the property involved is one
hundred fifty thousand dollars or more, receiving stolen property is a
felony of the third degree.

[RBW] Re: Top 10 Tips for a 1st Timer S24O?

2012-05-14 Thread doc
You have to be warm enough, you have to have enough food, and you have
to know where you're going. After those basics are covered, the rest
can fall into place. For warmth, I like down bags, but I have a liner
too, and a down sweater for around camp at night. Big Agnes makes an
insulated pad that stows pretty small. Don't forget something for a
pillow. For an S24O, you really don't need to cook, but that's half
the fun for me. My advice, though, is to coordinate with your friends
what you're bringing for food and how to cook it. Minimally, you need
something to heat water. If you're familiar with the territory, then
no need for a map or GPS, although sometimes it helps. Finally, the
one piece of kit I picked up recently that I can't believe I didn't
have before: an inflatable seat pad. If there are park benches,
great; but if not, what are you planning to sit on?

Have a blast and don't over think it.

[RBW] TA Carmina BB recommendation - Atlantis

2012-05-14 Thread Mitch Browne
I bit on the TA Carmina triple posted this weekend.

Of course I don't need it and am very happy with the Sugino XD 48/36/24
Tange 107 BB on my daily commute Atlantis.

I've looked at Peter White's website but don't readily find a Phil to fit.
I do see an SKF on Compass.

Any length suggestions for a Tange or Phil BB that would best fit this
crank on an Atlantis? Offset advice?

Thanks,

Mitch Browne

As much as an experiment as anything I wrote to the seller asking him about

*Dear quality_trader,*

Hello quality_trader, the frame is a smaller size, the rider was of a
smaller stature (he stood at about 5'4"). I can get another measurement for
you. 54-55cm is what we listed as the frame's size.

[RBW] Re: Top 10 Tips for a 1st Timer S24O?

2012-05-14 Thread Mike
LIesl, bring a book. Something seems really right about John McPhee
(Coming Into The Country, The Control of Nature, Survival of the Bark
Canoe, etc) for S24Os. Also, bring a camera and share the images with
us, along with a trip report.

Looks like my first S24O of the year is coming up on my rather
unexpectedly. A friend and I are heading out Wed for an overnight
camping trip on the Clackamas River. I sure hope this amazing weather
we're having in Portland holds until then.

[RBW] Re: Small Sackville Saddlesack issue

2012-05-14 Thread EricP
On my bag, ended up removing the stiffener to get it to lie down on the
Nitto R-14 top rack. Without a rack, it can sag slightly. Never really
bothered me, though. More annoying is how the main buckle seems to bounce
against everything and continually make noise. Especially any Nitto rack or
fenders. To my mind, not as bad as a squeaky chain, but can get irritating
right quick.

But, yeah, a stiff piece of plastic should unsag things.

Seller seems to have an assortment of crap for sale. Probably a pawn
broker or guy that scours sales locally. Doubtful he is the thief but
selling stolen goods is still a crime. Best have original owner contact
police before bike is gone forever.

that you have to stick with that concept, I'm just saying the
