[RBW] Re: New (to me) Berthoud Rack

2012-06-12 Thread Joe Bernard
I recently purchased a couple of these. It's a nice bag for layers,
mini-pump/tools, sandwhiches and such, but I wouldn't rely on it for a
stack of books. The design wouldn't stress the seatpost, though, as the
rack would likely pivot down from the end of its stem-mount before the stem
could get much leverage on the seatpost.

Re: [RBW] Rivs meet in the wild

2012-06-12 Thread Scott Henry
I think it happens with bikes of all different brands, but only if its a
smaller company. With a big brand you might get interested seeing the
exact same model, but other than that, it may be neet seeing another Trek
or Specialized or whatever, but it happens so much its not a big deal.

With a small builder, like Rivendell, it makes more of an impression. Its
all about the frequency. For me personally, I see the occasional Riv here
in Dayton (Ohio) but have yet to see or even hear of another Kogswell or
Handsome here locally. The reason being all three were/are small
companies but of the three, Rivendell is the largest and we used to have a
Riv dealer here in town. For that reason, I'd be more excited to see a
match for my new Handsome or my trusty Kogswell.

It would be even more so for a full custom builder. Riv is small but still
sells a fair number of frames and bikes annually. Imagine a single man
custom builder who pushes out a small handfull of frames yearly, those are
going to be a much rarer sighting. I've seen one Vanilla here in town,
that would be a huge deal for that guy to run into another one because it
will probably never happen.

Cheers,
Scott Henry

much we liked our bikes. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it feels
nice belonging to such a cool, tight-knit community of people.

[RBW] Katy Trail with Wife and Friend

2012-06-12 Thread Kelly
Dawn and I just got back from a week along the Katy Trail in Missouri. I
wanted to explore a bit so left on Friday and went to Lee Summit Missouri
and then checked out the new connector (the parts that are finished) from
Kansas City.
I meandered with no particular place to go for a couple of days as the
distance to meet my wife and friend in Sedalia was two comfortable days and
I had 2 1/2. I enjoyed some gravel roads that are lacking in St Louis,
and the freedom to just go one direction for a few hours and then change my
mind and go someplace else. With limited vacation or time on these
journeys it's difficult to get that truly free feeling. Tired of riding
head winds, turn around and ride the other way today. However this quick
trip to meet them at the train was close. Even with my meanderings I
managed to get to Sedalia a day early. With rain coming in I chose a
rehabbed historical motel that had the most comfortable bed I had ever
slept in I think.

I've ridden the Katy Trail several times, and mostly on my way home from
someplace else. The times I've ridden just the Katy were to get it over
with one could say with 85 and 107 mile days to get from Sedalia to St
Charles fully loaded. This time we were going to enjoy it and see things.
The first day was a comfortable 65 miles to one Katfish Kates along the
river. We setup camp and had chili and hotdogs at the campsite. The next
day we went and toured Columbia Missouri visiting bicycle shops and meeting
a friend for lunch. The connector from Columbia to the trail is about 18
miles round trip plus whatever milage we did in town. Great day followed
the next day by a trip into Jefferson City Missouri, were we visited the
capital building and got to see / experience the new bike path and ramp to
the hiway bridge. hard to explain... here is a photo of the ramp...
  http://www.flickr.com/photos/tksleeper/7167529573/in/set-72157630082138300
Last time I went into Jefferson City I was on the bridge with 50 mph
traffic, no shoulder and a smile that I was still alive.. :) Another great
day.

Long story short the slowed pace and good company made for a fantastic
trip. We visited and met many great people and saw some fun bikes. A
gorgeous Thorn here
.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tksleeper/7352734118/in/set-72157630082138300

Finally saw one of the extra wheels in the wild. It appeared to be working
great and the owner had many miles on it.
 here..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tksleeper/7167526859/in/set-72157630082138300
This photo was at a hostel that we stopped at. It was too busy not to
visit and see what was going on.As it turned out there was 4 groups of
us that would start at different times and stop at different places but
seemed to meet up during the last 3 days or so here and there. It was fun.

When trying to get the ride over with or get someplace the Katy Trail can
be monotonous and tiring. When making it up as you go and stopping to see,
smell and experience things around you it is quite different. Not having
an agenda and giving ourselves 4 days more than we needed to just ride it
was great. We left Sedalia Mo on Monday and got to our homes on Friday.
Dawn and I live about 18 miles from the trial head.

So if you decide to ride this great trail system I recommend not over
planning but making it up as you go with a general to do list. Be sure to
get into the connecting cities at the very least Columbia, Jefferson City,
Booneville and Herman, enjoy the brewery in Augusta and then meander on
into St Charles. I generally ride it West to East as I like riding to
home.

*Here is the picture set on flickr*
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tksleeper/sets/72157630082138300/with/7167526859/

I posted about a door jam bracket I used to mount a tubes lowrider rack on
Dawns Atlantis. It worked great and may be the long term solution for
future rides at this point. Here is her bike loaded down. She listened to
me and I didn't listen to myself by putting the rain covers on the
panniers. Hers thus stayed clean and mine were dirty and had to be cleaned
when I got home.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/tksleeper/7352739970/in/set-72157630082138300

Well sorry for the long post.. we had a great time though. July is the
Denali Adventure with Adventure Cycling then the Allegheny / CO first week
of October. There are four of us doing that now. We'll be riding to DC
and be shuttled back to Pittsburg.
If you would like to join us let me know. It will be self contained
unsupported, and we'll probably be doing 45 to 55 miles per day.

Later

Re: [RBW] seized bottom bracket cup

2012-06-12 Thread Cyclofiend
My first thought was the same as Eric - make sure you are turning that
the right way. I have seen far better mechanics than myself get
crossed up on bb shells.

It's reasonably unlikely to do damage to the frame by torquing the
correct direction. I'd try to be aware of the tool fit on the bb
shell (if it suddenly pops out, you could gouge that frame pretty
easily). The other concern would be how you braced the frame itself -
you are going to have a lng lever arm on that. So, clamping by
the seat post would certainly be better than a clamp on one of the
tubes (which could get crimped). I'd try to use the hands (generally
softer than clamp jaws) of strong and helpful individuals.

IF your bb shell and workspace allows it, you may find it works better
to fit the tool in a solid bench vise, and then turn the frame.
Again, a second set of hands can help to keep everything in plane.

There's also the walk-in freezer trick.

Good luck!

what was going on.As it turned out there was 4 groups of us that would
start at different times and stop at different places but seemed to meet up
during the last 3 days or so here and there. It was fun.
When trying to get the ride over with or get someplace the Katy Trail can be
monotonous and tiring. When making it up as you go and stopping to see, smell
and experience things around you it is quite different. Not having an agenda
and giving ourselves 4 days more than we needed to just ride it was great. We
left Sedalia Mo on Monday and got to our homes on Friday. Dawn and I live
about 18 miles from the trial head.
So if you decide to ride this great trail system I recommend not over planning
but making it up as you go with a general to do list. Be sure to get into the
connecting cities at the very least Columbia, Jefferson City, Booneville and
Herman, enjoy the brewery in Augusta and then meander on into St Charles. I
generally ride it West to East as I like riding to home.

Dawns Atlantis. It worked great and may be the long term solution for future

Re: [RBW] seized bottom bracket cup

2012-06-12 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Maybe Rivendell snuck in French or Swiss threading? Both have
different thread pitch and French RH cups thread in clockwise, not
counter-clockwise. Or no, that's Swiss; French have different threads
but thread in like English ones. Or no, that's French. Or not.
Seriously, my erstwhile and Eric Norris's present Motobecane has
French threads. Or Swiss -- never did figure it out, just had the LBS
get the right cups from Phil.

More seriously yet! I've applied huge amounts of torque to RH cups on
steel frames and never had a problem as long as (1) the cup was not
cross-threaded and (2) I carefully secured the jaws of the clamping
device (I run an old front QR through the axle with huge washers at
either end).

Please God your mechanic hasn't cross threaded the cup.

it likely that I could damage the frame of my Saluki or the bottom

seized drive side cup? I hear the carbon and aluminum guys fretting about
such things, but what are the chances with steel? If threads get stripped in
the process, can they be re-chased in a reliable way?
THe left side came off easily, but the drive side has proved tougher. I
doubt soaking in oil will help, since the threads were only recently
greased. It appears that the  drive side really got torqued up a few weeks
ago by a mechanic, who was hoping to take some play out of the cranks. But
it seems the play REALLY was a faulty or failing cartridge, so now I need to
remove and replace. Damn. I'm ready to get back on this bike, but don't want
 to mess it up.

+1 for the SQR. I've owned (and sold!) a number of them and it is a
very effective and reasonably priced device. It is limited to 10 kg,
but I daresay that the Berthoud device won't hold any more -- nor
would you want it to, with the load cantilevered out so far from the

No need to apologize for the length; the longer, the better. Very
interesting. I wish we had some long-distance trails gravel trails
here in NM.

That is some ramp!

Dawn and I just got back from a week along the Katy Trail in Missouri.  I
wanted to explore a bit so left on Friday and went to Lee Summit Missouri

I meandered with no particular place to go for a couple of days as the
distance to meet my wife and friend in Sedalia was two comfortable days and
I had 2 1/2.   I enjoyed some gravel roads that are lacking in St Louis, and
the freedom to just go one direction for a few hours and then change my mind
and go someplace else.   With limited vacation or time on these journeys
it's difficult to get that truly free feeling.  Tired of riding head winds,
turn around and ride the other way today.  However this quick trip to meet
them at the train was close.   Even with my meanderings I managed to get to
Sedalia a day early.  With rain coming in I chose a rehabbed historical
motel that had the most comfortable bed I had ever slept in I think.

Great day followed
the next day by a trip into Jefferson City Missouri, were we visited the
capital building and got to see / experience the new bike path and ramp to
the hiway bridge.  hard to explain... here is a photo of the ramp...

traffic, no shoulder and a smile that I was still alive.. :)  Another great
 day.

Long story short the slowed pace and good company made for a fantastic trip.

[RBW] Re: Katy Trail with Wife and Friend

Looks like a great trip. This post adds fuel to my campaign to get out on

a few days this summer.

 gorgeous Thorn here ..
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/tksleeper/7352734118/in/set-72157630082138300

[RBW] Re: Rivs meet in the wild

2012-06-12 Thread SteveD
Yesterday afternoon I was riding my Atlantis home from work on the
Burke-Gilman trail, and spotted a Hungapillar riding in the opposite
direction. I had noticed his handlebars in the distance as he was
approaching. They looked like the new Bosco bars, and thought how Rivish.
Sure enough, as he rode by me, I got a glimpse of that unmistakeable Hunqa
grey color scheme and downtube decal. I wonder if he noticed my Atlantis?

This whole experience leaves me wondering... does this happen with other

nice belonging to such a cool, tight-knit community of people.

[RBW] 56cm AHH FFHS Still For Sale

2012-06-12 Thread Peter M
Ok, one last shot before it goes to fleabay, which I hate to do really
but I have to pay over 2k for my daughter's summer camp so will be
looking to sell this and a myriad of new stuff I have laying around
too. My 56cm 650b AHH Frame, Fork, Headset and Brakes is up for sale,
color is School Bus Yellow but it looks more to me like Creamsicle
Orange. Frame obviously has room for Hetres and 52mm VO Zeppelins
Serial number for those that keept track of those things is SA 226. It
has all the rack fittings of the new Hilsens on the midfork and mid
seat stay, one eyelet on the front fork, two on the back dropout. Has
a kickstandplate, and cast in ridges on bottom bracket. A really top
shelf example of a bike that is used but not abused or ridden hard. No
damage, usual paint loss on eyelets, small scuff on seattube decal,
overall in excellent shape, just begging to be ridden way more than I
have been. Will include dia compe centerpulls and kookstop pads if
buyer wants them. Bike really is beautiful and I have already gotten
compliments on the few rides I have squeezed in. Looking for $1050
shipped to lower 48, paypal only. Link to Flikr page, I can take more
pics if buyer wants. http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/

I was on a bike tour in Wisconsin last summer, SAGBRAW, about 300 or
so people. Don't recall the model (maybe Ram?) but several times I
spotted an orange with cream head tube Rivendell, locked up at camp,
etc. Finally on the last day I met the owner outside a store. There
was also a Waterford on the tour. They are out there.

[RBW] Re: Albatross OR Bosco

2012-06-12 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
I made this exact swap on my Big Dummy and have been meaning to snap some
pics and post a report. The short of it is that for this bike/situation it
was a definite improvement. That said I then swapped the noodles off of my
AHH and replaced them with the displaced albas. I won't go so far as to say
that was an improvement, 'cause I like them both differently, but it was a
change that I'm enjoying.

A couple details to mention about the Alba to Bosco conversion on my Big
Dummy...
I had been riding the albas on a stem riser for the past 1.5 years and
recently ditched the riser in the name of smallering the bike
Since the smallering I've been wanting a more upright/casual riding position
I kept the same stem and have been liking the further back + higher grip
position
I find I spend a lot of time riding on the hump (the highest point of the
bar when it's set up with the grips pointing slightly down)
After some hemming and hawing I went with the 58cm Bocos and am glad. I'm
6'3 and I think the 55 would have felt too narrow after the 56 Albas.

The Bosco is without a doubt a better bar for this situation. I'm 100% glad
I made the swap. It fixes things about the fit of the bike that I wanted to
correct. I'm not convinced I'd be as happy with the Bosco if I had put it
on my AHH because there's nothing lacking on the current set up. I don't
know that I'd make the Alba-Bosco swap to out of curiosity. They're
entirely different bars. If you're thinking you want a more upright
position, go the way of the Bosco. If you love your Albas keep 'em.

hope this helps.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivs meet in the wild

2012-06-12 Thread Doug Way

Hi Jim-

Briefly delurking to say that Deb and I have seen a few Rivs in
Boulder. Besides our white Roadeos (red blue trim), there's an
Atlantis I frequently see at University Bikes, an orange Quickbeam, an
old Road Standard, and that orange Hillborne at WF. Deb says we never
park ours because we're usually riding them. We ride Cherryvale road
very frequently, from 55th and Arapahoe out to Superior and back.

What are you riding? I probably should remember from your posts but I
don't. If I see you, I'll try to flag you down, :-).

We have two other Rivs, an Atlantis (mine) and a burgundy Heron.

I saw a Romulus at a Kiwanis bike ride in Southern Illinois this past
weekend, I was on my Sam Hillborne. Of course we talked a little about
bikes. That Rom was way, way cool. I had my bike stripped down with no
bags or racks because I wanted to try and ride a bit quicker and lighter,
which I did. I had a great ride. I was also trying out some new tires
650bx32 Hutchinsons from Compass cycles which performed very well. The
Romulus owner had a couple of racks and a nice dyno front wheel and
lighting setup, plus what looked like a stuffed tiger tied on his
handlebars. Very cool bike. I wish I got his name.

[RBW] Re: Albatross OR Bosco

2012-06-12 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
I use both Bosco and Albatross regularly.

Bosco is wider. Seems more open. Seems somewhat more flexy. Accommodates
BarSack rack more easily. Extra rise is noticeable. Vast open space up front
for stretching out.

Albatross feels stiffer. 2 or 3cm narrower is noticeable. Has less space for
stretching out but the grip is more comfortable when I do it; the curves are
great.

I have my Albatross on a nearly max'd out Tallux 10cm. I'm tonight mounting my
Bosco on a 12cm Tallux (which won't be near max'd out); the Bosco came back
towards me more.

Both my Alba and Bosco are HT Al and on otherwise virtually identical
Hillbornes. I can't imagine the Bosco-moose will be even slightly flexy.
Personally, liking my bars high like I do, I woiuldn't enjoy the Bosco-moose as
much as the Alba. But I like my Bosco and my Albatross bars both very well
indeed. Bosco feels more expansive. Alba gets edge on comfort and, frankly,
beauty. Slight edge. And the Bosco's look is growing on me.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

Re: [RBW] seized bottom bracket cup

2012-06-12 Thread MobileBill
Thanks for y'alls advice and concern and general hand holding. We got bold
and cracked it, figuratively speaking, with the help of four arms and a
torque wrench ( the hardest part, as Jim and others indicated, is keeping
the tool from slipping outta the cup and figuring out how to keep the frame
from flexing and squirming _ it doesn't work if you try to do it while the
bike's in the repair stand). The new cartridge cups screwed on like a charm,
so there was no damage to the (very English!) thread. It appears the old
cartridge had *literally* been cracked long before we loosed it and that
was evidently the cause of the failed cartridge. I've heard of cracked
cups, but have never seen yjr cartridge housing itself cracked. Strange.
But the Saluki rides better than it has ridden in months. Glad to be
back in the saddle again. Even better, I had an excuse to commute (18 miles
round trip) on my wife's Betty Foy for a week, ladies short nose wide
seated springy saddle and all. Thought I would hate it. But I think I might
do it again just for the fun of it.

 I

I just got around to watching this a few minutes ago. Love it! Seems

I'll be working this Sunday so won't be able to make it. Yet another
Portland Rivish even that I'll miss. One of these days everything will

[RBW] Re: Albatross OR Bosco

2012-06-12 Thread Mike
Hey Andy, please get pictures of your Hilsen with Albatross bars on
it. Just sorta curious how it looks. I'm giving serious thought to
trying them out on my own Hilsen a little later this summer. I feel
like I have enough bikes with with drop bars on them.
