Lots and lots to see in Detroit. Wall art is one of the things I love
most about riding in the city.

Let's go for a ride, y'all! :)

Lurked here for quite awhile now without actually owning a Rivendell, but a
week or so ago I picked up an orange Sam Hillborne frame and fork courtesy Ray
Shine (thanks!). Built it up in typical Riv fashion: Sugino XD2 triple,
8-speed 11-32, Synergy rims, Noodle bars (cork tape shellacked and twined),
Silver friction shifters, and Tektro 559 brakes. Still got to get racks and
fenders.

Rides nice, sportier than I imagined.

Re: [RBW] Re: Honjos

2012-06-16 Thread Eric Platt
It is not that important to all. While I have fenders on all my bikes it
just isn't an issue if I need to spend some extra time to make a bracket or
spacer. More concerned whether I can fit 50mm tires with side knobs on
60mm fenders. Not an issue with plastic but pretty important with metal
due to the rolled edge.

[RBW] Re: Tire Gods: 1, Me: 0

2012-06-16 Thread Nick Bull
To answer the question someone asked in your blog about how the B-Lines
compare to Hetre's or Pari-Motos:

B-Lines are a decent "every day use" tire, much like the Panaracer Pasela.
On a "quality per dollar" basis I say they are just as good as the Hetres,
but that is because they are a fair amount cheaper (just like Paselas).
But they are nothing like as plush as the Hetre's. Once you've ridden on
Hetre's, it's easy to rationalize that "this ride is more special and
deserves the Hetre's" and leave the B-Lines on your other bike. And for
events where speed is of the essence, like a 600km brevet, the Pari-Motos
just can't be beat. They are nearly as plush feeling as the Hetre's, but
noticeably lighter and faster rolling. But you give up some life
expectancy, so you really only want them on your bike for the serious
events.

That's why you own a few bikes. Those parts you didn't really want in the sale
will likely get in the rotation on one of the bikes at a later date, maybe on
one that you sell yourself. Which makes me think of this...

I wonder if there's a part out there that's never been ridden and instead only
makes the rounds getting tacked onto second-hand "for-sale" complete bikes.

I realize that's kind of a fruitcake-ish notion...

It's a pretty good deal though. Ride the tires till they fall apart, then
put on what you prefer. Rest of the bike is a good solid build. Wheels are
a little bit on the roadie side of the spectrum.

Yeah, it does look funny in the pics. Such is the issue with buying a bike
setup for someone else, now you are buying 100 bucks worth of tires if you
don't already have them. I always prefer to get frame only personally.

Re: [RBW] Rivish Ramble on Monday - PDX

Are you still interested in Sunday's ride? I'll be at work on Mon.

Subject: [RBW] Rivish Ramble on Monday - PDX

In response to the comments in another thread from folks who won't be able to
make it to the Grant P Style Ride on Sunday, Mike (aka Leaf Slayer) and I got
in touch off list and are planning our own Rivish Ride for Monday. Our general
plan is to meet up in North Portland and head out to Dixie Mtn via St Johns,
Hwy 30 and some gravel. We'll likely be out much of the day and there will be
plenty of climbing, but we'll be taking it relatively easy since Mike has a
1200k coming up and we don't want to break him.

If anyone's interested and available, either reply to this thread or send Mike
or I a message off list.

[RBW] Re: Honjos

2012-06-16 Thread SteveD
Very nice. Well done. I currently have the SKS fenders on my 51 cm
Atlantis; had them for nearly 10 years since I purchase my bike from Riv.
I've been wanting to replace them with a set of Honjos, but can't decide on
the fluted or hammered. Actually leaning toward the hammered now. Nice AHH
by the way. I've been scheming on how to get one (650B) myself, maybe next
year for non-commuting rides. I figure a year should be enough time to prep
my wife for the purchase of the frame. If that works, then I'll figure out
how to get the other $2k or so for all the bits and pieces. :)
