[RBW] Re: s24 Suggestions in Marin? Leaving from SF?

2012-08-15 Thread gep71154
So many good places...easy: Angel Island, like somebody suggested. Go to
the site, register all legal-like, you'll need to take a ferry there (GET
to take a ferry there is more like it)---and back to the mainland.
Wonderful riding around there. Get a map and go. The tons and tons of
firewood at one of the ranger's places is not guarded, and is totally
burnable in the barbecues at the sites, but it's eucalyptus wood, and it
does a bad number on meat. If you want to cook over fireyikes, bring
your own wood?

Hmmm I've never tried shellac, and I typically use cork. What's the
feeling? Does it feel organic/comfy/grippy? Is it tacky when dry? Is it
slippery when sweaty? Does it wear off? If it wears and/or gets dirty, is
it easy to clean and freshen?

Andy, does white finish out white/clear, or does it darken white cork,
assuming you have used it on white cork?

Re: [RBW] Any Seattle-Area Riv-Riders Need Amber Shellac?

2012-08-15 Thread Rob
Hi Jeff,

I masked off everywhere but the cork with masking tape, plastic bags and
brown paper, so I kept the drips off the bike, and didn't have the occasion
to clean it off the bike's paint. It is easiest to clean up of course
before it dries, with a cloth moistened with alcohol. Not that that helps
you at *this* point I bet the shellac would come off before the paint
would though. Don't have any evidence at all to back that up, so try it on
an unexposed area first

RBW says the PBH for the 52 is 81 to 87cm. I think you need the bike;
that's a good deal, and I'd be very tempted if it was my size.

[RBW] Re: Bleriot ride report...

2012-08-15 Thread islaysteve
I'm happy to hear that the Bleriot is at least somewhat redeemed! I have
my STI shifters on mine, I won't give them up, see no reason to. I
couldn't begin to say whether the
Bleriot feels faster or slower than my Ti "racing" bike. The factor of the
motor (after years off the bike) is WAY bigger than any other factor. But
I can say for sure, that the Bleriot is way comfy. If I ever give in to the
temptation of trying moustache bars, maybe I'll try bar-ends. Cheers, Steve

2012-08-15 Thread Steve Park
Give it a try.
The full 180K is a leg buster, and that's the route everyone has in mind
when they talk of how hard D2R2 is.
The 100k is not easy, but it's a much more manageable route, and there are
bailout points throughout.
All that aside, D2R2 a great event. Friendly crowd, lot o' of beautiful
bikes, good food, beer. It's the highlight of my bike calendar.

I'll be doing the 115K this year. Hope to see you there.

Just remembered Rodeo ("Roe-day-oh") Beach and wondered if there was a
campground there, which took me to:

http://www.goingoutside.com/beachdetail/1000286_Rodeo_Beach_California.html

-- interesting options there. I'm concerned that you will find that
everything is booked, and camping "wild" turns out to be what's
available. Are you willing to ride dirt? It gets flattish at the top of
Bobcat Trail in the headlands, maybe rummage around a bit on google earth.
I hope bicycles are still allowed in that area, better check with GGNRA so
you don't get nailed just for being on a bike.

Cheers,

2012-08-15 Thread pb
Given the time limit you describe, SP Taylor would be impossible.

If one were willing to camp illegally and discretely, one could simply ride
up into the headlands or onto Tam. Or:

http://www.mttam.net/activities/camping.html <-- pantoll might be ideal

http://www.westpointinn.com/about.htm <-- not camping, probably booked,
well worthwhile

http://www.nps.gov/goga/planyourvisit/upload/sb-camping-2008.pdf <--
Tenessee Valley

Maybe research China Camp, or is there still camping on Angel Island?
Might be a stretch to get the ferry back to work.

Re: [RBW] Any Seattle-Area Riv-Riders Need Amber Shellac?

2012-08-15 Thread Swza
Hi Rob,
I see you wrote that shellac cleans up with alcohol. I recently shellaced
some handlebar tape and got some splatter on the paint job of a blue
Rambouillet. Have you (or any other members) had any luck removing shellac
from paint jobs while not harming the paint itself? Thanks

[RBW] Re: Bike-y things to do in Mpls in the next few days?

2012-08-15 Thread Shifty
Y' betcha Andrew,

I'll pitch for Hiawatha Cyclery in SE Mpls because without them, I wouldn't
be a Rivendell owner. It's a small shop but has more useful gear per square
foot (inch?) than any other worth mentioning. I rarely leave without an
armful of things.

If you're a coffee lover, Angry Catfish bike shop was just mentioned in the
local paper as serving craft-style coffee, I'll be there soon to try a $5
cup of snobery. On-One bike shop in downtown is "interesting" with maybe 6
courier bikes on display–nothing to drool over but they serve decent food
and coffee if you work downtown. Not my kind of friendly or, helpful
atmosphere, however.

Now, Calhoun Cycle in Uptown has stuff to drool over, including the area's
best Brooks and Carradice displays and every kind of widget and gadget that
iI can think of but the bikes are limited to folding, recumbents and Dutch
style. And lastly, Freewheel Bike on the West Bank is probably the area's
best big shop with lots of cool bikes as long as it's a Trek, Surly or
Salsa. Seriously.

Feel free to contact me off line,
Sean (Shifty)

[RBW] s24 Suggestions in Marin? Leaving from SF?

2012-08-15 Thread allenmichael
Getting ready to do our first s24 north from San Francisco later this
month. Any suggestions for good campspots? Leaving late afternoon,
mid-week, and back to work the next a.m., so Sam Taylor seems a bit too
far. Does this seem correct to anyone who has done this more often?

Would appreciate any suggestions on- or off-list.

[RBW] Re: Bike-y things to do in Mpls in the next few days?

2012-08-15 Thread Liesl
Good bike shops:
Hiawatha Cyclery, south Minneapolis--call to make sure they're open first;
home of frequent poster Jim Thill
The Hub Bike Co-op, south Minneapolis--funky good-sized bike co-op; likely
open late
Calhoun Cyclery, Uptown Minneapolis--great selection of folders,
recumbents, and bike travel gear; likely open late

have fun! Liesl
