[RBW] Montana photos

2012-08-17 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Just got back from a memorable 6 days of riding and camping in NW Montana,
in and around Glacier NP. No Rivendells on the trip, but you may enjoy some
of the photos anyway:

Ya know, I shouldn't generalize based on too little information. I accept
what Reid has said and apologize. I had two 59 Romulus bikes but I don't
know what other sizes were made. I had thought there was a 57 but maybe
not. I was just kind of assuming that Rambouillets were even sizes 54 (my

In any case though, I don't think there was a 60 with a caliper brake - the
one shown in the pictures in the link, which seller claims is a 60, has
caliper brakes. Also, I had kind of ruled out the later, unexpected run of
cantilever Roms because they were not sold as complete bikes - it was frame
and fork ($1300, as I recall) plus whatever you want on it. Ruled them
out because there was no complete bike price to compare to what this seller

7 speed cassettes are widely available, in just about every combination
they ever came in -- unlike 8s, most combinations of which were
discontinued just a few years ago.

I have a 10-speed cassette, but I am starting to get a better feel for when the
chain moves. Lately I have been paying attention more and hope I can get better

But what would be really cool, is a 5-speed cassette.
Maybe for my next drivetrain I will try to get a 7 in the back, 2 up front, if

Amber definitely changes the color but the clear just sort of enhances it. It
still looks natural.

Coming from a boat building background, my initial cork shellac-ing was several
coats... Like 5 or 7 or so... I didn't count but went until there was a
noticeably thick glaze. It was too much. Sort of plastic feeling and Slippery

I don't have a small Hunqapillar but I am using one of those hangers

I think the "perfect" length for that piece of housing may be a bit of
a personal preference thing. I suggest starting a touch long and just
chopping it down a bit at a time till you like it.

[RBW] Re: Altantis almost complete!

2012-08-17 Thread Mojo
Funny how canti brakes are so simple yet quite theoretically and
operationally quite complicated. As I understand canti operations, I agree
with Jeremy that you will gain some mechanical advantage from a lower
straddle cable. You might also run fine sandpaper along the rim braking
surface just to insure it is clean and 'open' to the brake pads.

After you have ridden it for awhile, I would like to hear your
comparison/contrast to the LHT, a bike with different tube diameters and
thickness but very similar geometry.

[RBW] Re: I've got a project bike. Do you want to do the conversion, or should I?

2012-08-17 Thread William
I'm taking the budget route now.

1. Mostly stock
2. Overhaul
3. 1.75 New Express tires and presta tubes
4. a Noodle/tech dlx/tektro bar cockpit I already have
5. a black B17 I already have
6. super secret Silver barcons built from the Riv-Silver Thumbies
7. Silver SKS P55s I already have
8. Nitto Big front and Rear racks that I already have

Total cash outlay is under $100. That'll get it 100% useable for
road-evaluation. Then I can think about justifying a nicer paint job (and
a couple more braze-ons)

2012-08-17 Thread Horace
Also, the Romulus with caliper brakes was only available for one year in
2003. Since 61cm is not an unusually large size, my guess is that Rivendell
didn't have one lying around to sell in 2007. Of course, time is hard to
judge for us humans, so when he says he bought it 5 years ago, maybe he
meant he bought it 9 years ago.

[RBW] Re: Altantis almost complete!

2012-08-17 Thread Jeremy Till
The most helpful article on cantilever adjustment is here:
http://sheldonbrown.com/canti-trad.html

It sounds like, from your description (not tons of power, requires lots of
hand strength) and looking at your pictures, that you might have the
straddle cable set too high/long, which seems to be a common mistake with
high-profile cantilevers like the Neo-Retro. If you shorten the straddle
cable, it'll effectively increase the mechanical advantage of the whole
system, providing a brake that requires less hand force to produce more
stopping power at the rim.

It is a nice looking bike judging from the generic pictures, but also take
into account that the most anyone ever paid for a Romulus directly from

[RBW] Hunqapillar Rear Brake

2012-08-17 Thread Ginz
Hi Folks,

Are there any small-hunq'a owners (48cm) who are using an accessory
rear brake-cable hanger (such as the Nitto paperclip) to avoid a sharp
bend in the housing? It looks like the photos of Vaughn's new bike
are doing that very thing.

If anyone has found the perfect length of housing for that section,
please post your measurment! I'm running v-brakes at the moment but
plan to switch to cantis soon...

Ginz
