[RBW] Re: Citroens and Hetres
Nice... I spent a year (many years ago) working for Peugeot Motors of America (who purchased Citroen in the 70s). There was a photo in the office of a Citroen driving down a street in Paris with the rear right wheel completely missing... Amazing hydraulic suspensions on those cars. I also had the opportunity to run a few errands for the company in one of those Citroen panel trucks (just like the gray one pictured)... required double-clutching... A fun (if not scary) adventure wrestling this beast down the highways of North Jersey. Thanks for sharing those pics, Ian. Re: [RBW] Slow Riding
I've been telling myself to ride like this, because it makes it much easier to get out on the bike on a cold, windy, grey day. I tell myself: dammit man! Don't worry about speed, ambling along is better than nothing! And I did 25 miles yesterday. Have to repeat it today, though: 10*F this morning at 7:15 am. OTOH, once I get on the bike and warm up (literally and figuratively) I feel energetic and like to go conquer hills. I'd say at least 3/4 of my riding is errands and commuting with detours. [RBW] Custom Suggestions for the Jan 3 winner
One potential custom idea that I think would be cool would be a proper touring bike with really long chainstays. I'm thinking an Atlantis front end with maybe 50-52cm chainstays. Virtually everybody who's tried to fit a pannier knows that the downside to too-short chainstays on a touring bike is that your feet hit the panniers and you may have insufficient clearance for the tires you want to run. What's the downside to too-long chainstays on a touring bike? I cannot think of one. Before riding the Appaloosa I would have speculated that maybe it would be too flexy or maybe the handling would be too weird. Now that I have ridden the Appaloosa, I know first-hand that both of those fears are 100% misplaced. The longest chainstays I know of on traditional touring bikes are in the 47-48cm range, but I'm not an expert on the topic. Another full inch or two of heel room might be perfect for everything touring-related EXCEPT packing the bike. [RBW] Re: Slow Riding
I feel you. I still have the memories of my youth when I took it personal every time somebody passed me or dropped me, and when I'd feel a little alpha dog surge whenever I passed someone else. I've let that all go for the most part. During brevets I am a little bit conflicted. I'm under some pressure to put in a good time, to minimize riding time after dark. My wife and kids worry quite a bit. So I sometimes try to hang with the faster riders, staying on a wheel to speed me along. But when I get dropped I always find plenty of pleasure in enjoying the countryside, and I like my own company just fine, so pacelining holds only the appeal of finishing faster, which is a very limited appeal. Some of the truly legendary Randonneurs and Randonneuses are among the slow riders. It's a huge treat riding with them to hear their stories, riding at a pace that encourages conversation. It's all fun, and it's all cycling. [RBW] Re: Custom Suggestions for the Jan 3 winner
Probably not a deal breaker for everyone, but perhaps worth considering... one downside of a longer than normal bike is that it won't fit on transit. My 65cm Homer barely fits on the bus/light rail racks here in Portland. Another cm in wheelbase length or fatter tires would make it incompatible with the front racks on the busses. I have 2-3 cm wiggle room on the light rail. I haven't had any issues with heel strike on my Homer. Size 12 shoes + large-ish Arkel/Ortlieb bags. A Surly Big Dummy is my daily driver. It has an effective chain stay length (BB-DO) of about 82cm. Long bikes are great. The Appaloosa makes me thing of the stretched-out beach cruisers that were popular in Southern CA around the turn of the most recent century (not sure if they still are-- I'm in Portland now) They were fun to ride. I imagine the Appaloosa to be a better/ more functional version of that. --Smitty On Wednesday, January 2, 2013 9:52:55 AM UTC-8, William wrote: One potential custom idea that I think would be cool would be a proper touring bike with really long chainstays. Re: [RBW] Slow Riding
Interesting. On my errand rides my iPhone Cyclemeter app usually records ~12 mph clock running over largely residential streets, but there are so many variables that average is not a useful tool. Eg, yesterday's 12 mile return leg recorded 11.9 but that included a 5-to-10 minute stop to adjust a cleat on the first-time-this-year-broken-out Lake winter boots, as well as 3 1/2 miles of climbing against a stiff N wind in a 75 gear on the gofast (didn't walk on the very steep 4/10 mile hill up the Rio Rancho mesa! Light wheels **climb*! Whoo hoo!). Outbound, with the wind behind me and 500 feet of elevation drop, 15.5 average with a stop at the PO to use the machine to send a Priority Mail package, this on the '03's 72 gear (switched Rivs at turnaround point). OTOH, back in 2008 -- 2005, when I commuted on the '03 Riv fixed across town 15 miles, ~12 mph average by computer was the standard, clock running -- urban blocks and 7 miles uphill, most gradual, 70 gear. (OTOH again, return home was also about 12 mph thanks to headwinds and traffic and fixed gear.) Back when I was a young 40-something, I'd do a slightly longer 16 mile cross-town commute but, instead of back roads, I'd go straight up Central/Route 66, lights a mile apart, and routinely break 60 minutes -- best time 18; liked to pass and stay ahead of the #66 bus; and it wasn't really fun because I felt tired all the time and caught cold easily. ~67 fixed. For me, it is important to find a good mean between riding slowly enough to stay aerobic and riding energetically for fun. At almost-58 I am getting to the point where I can find and maintain this, particularly for climbing hills while standing. I do really love, love, love at least short steep (= 1 mile) or gradual longer hills on a fixed gear. Downhill, meh. She encourages me to ride. I like cycling for the fun of it and seeing the beauty of God's creation. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Maybe this is what they mean by breathing. Grant wrote that he puckered up and blew on a saddle and couldn't feel any air go through. But perhaps Brooks means the air passes through the three holes of the B17? Breathing when it concerns materials is about transportation of water molecules, not air. A leather saddle breathes because it can take up, and distribute the moisture from your behind and let it evaporate through the saddles surface. It has nothing to do with transportation or exchange of air, even though air in practice is the transportation medium of the water vapor outside the leather. As an example and clarification of an discussion I've seen about this, treating the underside of a leather saddle would indeed make it breathe worse. The vapor/steam pressure between your behind and saddle is comparatively high, and water is forced into the leather. If the saddle is untreated on the underside the water can evaporate more easily from there, beacuse the fat and waxes in leather treatment is designed to stop water from passing through, doesn't matter if it's coming from the outside or inside. If you should or should not treat the underside of the saddle however, is another question - but very far from an important one - as it works well both ways. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. my solution is to ride with people who go at the pace you want to ride. I'm also still struggling with not staying with the fastest riders in any group rides I do. [RBW] FS: Park Frame and Fork-end alignment tools
Nice old-style set, with heavy-duty real-steel awesomeness. I've had them for years and never used them, and right now they're hanging right next to my Campagnolo pedal dust-cap/lock-nut tool that has seen almost as much use over the years. Shop wear as seen in the photo below from a dozen moves over those same years. I'm sure I'll need them as soon as they're gone, and regret selling them for many more years, but take 'em off my hands for $55.00 shipped and I'm a happy camper this year. *http://tinyurl.com/bkvj4om* * * How to use 'em here: * * *http://tinyurl.com/bkpfksc* * * Marty -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Slow Riding
Now that I am letting go of the concern for fast speeds, I am having fun working on track stands at traffic signals and stop signs where I have to stop (trashes anyone's average speed on cyclometer). I still can't stop totally and balance, but I sorta do this thing where I do a very slow 1/8th rotation of the pedal to keep me slowly moving forward to stay upright. Hopefully one day I'll be able to just balance motionless. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FS: Gary Fisher Triton 57cm Single Speed
Howdy! Bought this bike when I was thinking about getting a SimpleOne. Long story short- wife surprised me with the last SO frame and now this has to go to make some room and so I can buy some wheels. The bike has less than 100 sunny Tucson miles on it and is in like new condition. Currently set up as a single speed but flip flop rear hub make change to fixie simple (if that is your thing). Computer and water bottle cages included. Cages are Bontrager and look like the King Iris. Computer is a basic wired model. Great winter bike, training, or cruising. No Pedals. Bike is stock except I replaced the white bar tape with black. $350 shipped CONUS. [RBW] Only ourselves to blame?
For no more 5 speed or 6 speed freewheels in production? Been reading Rivreaders and less gears on the back wheel sounds great. But I have seen the readers talking about the dwindling availabilty of these. I am guessing that as racers needed more narrow jumps, it has grown to 11-speed cassettes. I guess that as the bike companies are pushing racing gear for regular cyclists at shops, un-racers riders are taking the bait so all the demand is for the latest racing tech stuff, causing the demise of the 5/6/7 speed freewheels/cassettes? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Yep - and it's not the lack of speed that slows you down so much as the chats at controls!
