Re: [RBW] fender clearance tektro r559 vs paul racer
I put Paul's Racer brakes on my Hilsen for that exact reason. I have no issues with the fender clearance on that bike, although mine is 700c. On my 650b Betty, I'm struggling with that same issue, and will be testing leaving the Silver brakes and going with 38mm Lierres vs the 42mm Hetres where the front tire rubs the bolt inside the fender and the clearance is s tight I'm concerned it would be very easy for a rock to get lodged between the tire and the fender. The other option will be to check how much additional clearance a front Racer brake will give me. On your Hilsen I'd definitely recommend switching to front and rear Racer brakes. Great modulation and looks as well. [RBW] Re: fender clearance tektro r559 vs paul racer
Hi Mike, I put the Paul Racers on my Bleriot to maximize tire/fender clearance. With the Hetres I have gobs of room for fenders. I was even able to install some fenders with the Schwalbe Fatties (45mm actual), but I wouldn't really recommend it. For the last 3 years I had SKS P50 (or P55?) fenders on there (w/ the Hetres). No problems. I recently installed SKS longboards. I really prefer the length/coverage of the longboards, but they are borderline too narrow for the Hetres, IMO. I get a fair amount of rubbing, but I'm going to ride and tweak them for a few months before making a final call. Here's a pichttp://www.flickr.com/photos/jayburkhalter/6103960457/in/set-72157627572132424/showing clearance with the Schwalbe fatties. [RBW] Re: Custom Suggestions for the Jan 3 winner
Why is everyone trying to design a new bike? Because it is fun for some people to idly speculate about the design of bicycles. Especially when it's too cold to ride or when the speculator is too ill to ride. Or it's just another manifestation of the N+1 theory. My stable of bikes could always use one more, what should that one be? Rivendell's line up could always use one more, what should that be? Either way, it's just idle fantasy. Fun-having. On Saturday, January 5, 2013 10:44:23 AM UTC-8, Richard K. wrote: I like Riv's bike lineup as is. I'm thinking an Atlantis front end with maybe 50-52cm chainstays. Virtually everybody who's tried to fit a pannier knows that the downside to too-short chainstays on a touring bike is that your feet hit the panniers and you may have insufficient clearance for the tires you want to run. What's the downside to too-long chainstays on a touring bike? I cannot think of one. Before riding the Appaloosa I would have speculated that maybe it would be too flexy or maybe the handling would be too weird. Now that I have ridden the Appaloosa, I know first-hand that both of those fears are 100% misplaced. The longest chainstays I know of on traditional touring bikes are in the 47-48cm range, but I'm not an expert on the topic. Another full inch or two of heel room might be perfect for everything touring-related EXCEPT packing the bike. [RBW] 2013 Riding Plans anyone?
Dawn and I were talking about vacation schedules this year and since they changed how it was done at her work place it's been dicy getting dates that work for thing like Michigan Shoreline West and thing as such. However we had a fantastic 2012 and were talking about the upcoming year. We had some casual ideas ... and then we decided to reduce cost by staying within driving distance and excluding airfare. With that in mind here are some of the rides / hopes for our 2013. What are yours? April - Tour de Hills in Harrison Arkansas - One day ride May - Three State Three Mountain Challenge - One day ride May - Horsey Hundred - two day ride May- Weekend overnight June- One week fully loaded tour... leaning towards Train to Chicago then ride home. July - try to survive heat during local club rides and around town stuff. August - One week fully loaded Cowboy Trail September - 2 weeks and do the Erie Canal or Natchez Trace or USBR 35 From Sault Ste. Marie to New Buffalo - Leaning towards Erie Canal at the Moment though logistically it's the toughest of the three. October - Hilly Hundred 2 day ride November - FestiVELO 4 day ride Looking forward to 2013 and seeing what y'all are doing.. [RBW] Re: 2013 Riding Plans anyone?
Kelly, looks like you got a lot of good stuff planned for the coming year. Last year I was super ambitious with lots of randonneruing related plans--R-12, SR series, 1200k, Fleche--and multiple 3 day bike camping trips. Things didn't pan out as planned. I did 200k, 300k and 600k brevets. No R-12, only two 200k perms, and only two overnight camping trips that were tons of fun but left me wanting more. I did manage to ride and finish the Cascade 1200k which was pretty neat but I don't know, not quite as much fun, or even as difficult as I anticipated. The weather was horrible for the event. A combination of unexpectedly adopting a puppy and a loss of motivation curbed my grandiosity. But I did have a lot of fun urban rides explores roads and stretching the legs on roads closer to home during our glorious summer that we had this year here in Portland. For 2013 things are pretty toned down. I'll definitely do 200k and 300k brevets although I won't be bike touring this summer. There's some things going on later this year that just trump cycling. I may try and get out for a winter camping trip in Feb or Mar but even that is gonna be hard. I think for the most part I'll be making do with shorter rambles in the 4hr/max range that include Forest Park and the West Hills. After 5yrs of big mileage it's probably good to tone it down for a year. I've been cycling now for 20yrs and hoping to cycle for another 30 to 40 more. With less time on the bike I'm looking forward to being less tired and staying up later reading. Happy New Year to everyone on the list. Looking forward to following your adventures as you post about them here. Which reminds me. One other plan for this year is to get together with the PDX Riv enthusiast crew from the New Year's Day ride and doing more riding. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I have P45 with 40mm Rumpkins under them and no rubbing with front fender at max height. Paul Racer brakes. I am getting Hetres soon. Only 2mm diff. Hope they fit. You could grind hole on p45 fender mounting bracket for to move fender higher a few mm. I am thinking of this if Hetres too tight. Racers have lotsa space. I can measure if you want. My Racer arms snap open wide upon releasing the ball of the straddle cable. So they won't touch the fender. [RBW] Re: fender clearance tektro r559 vs paul racer
My experience with my 650B Hilsen and Silver sidepulls. - Hetres with no fenders is spectacular. It looks awesome. - Soma New Express with P45 fenders is great - Hetres with P45 is super snug but I used it with no rubbing. The two tightest spots are the two you have identified. 1. headroom under the fork crown 2. headroom under the rear brake bridge - On a whim wanting to make my Hilsen more stylish I switched to Honjos. The choices I made on how to attach them made the two tight spots even tighter. So, as I have them set up now, I cannot run Hetres. I have Pari Motos and a stock of Lierres for the Hilsen now. - As a winter project I'm going to return to SKS fenders on the Hilsen. I am content that Lierres + fenders will be a splendid set up for the Hilsen for the long haul. Jan Heine himself assures us all that the Lierre is just as good as the Hetre (at least really close). If you have to have the red-tread, the Soma B-Line comes in red and is a great tire, in my opinion. In short, my 650B A Homer Hilsen is the finest bike I've ever owned, but I'm now convinced that the clearances it was designed to provide are spot on PERFECT for 38s with fenders. 42s with fenders is a tight squeeze. I have 2 other bikes that I can run Hetres on. If I was dead-set on running Hetres on my Hilsen, I'd either resign myself to it being really tight, or I'd think about getting it converted to a canti-Homer and get a repaint. [RBW] Re: fender clearance tektro r559 vs paul racer
I use racers on my tandem, with very wide SKS fenders and Marathon racer tires (26x1.6); and racer m's on my Ram with Honjo' 45s. In both cases the brakes clear the fenders with plenty to spare. Racers and Racer M's both use the longer canti style pads which hit my front fork when fully open; so the limiting factor becomes how big a tire I can get off and on, and the fender size is irrelevant. I use neo retros on my touring bike. Paul's brakes - look good; work great; easy to set up and adjust; last a life time. What's not to like? Michael On Saturday, January 5, 2013 5:02:38 PM UTC-5, Mike B wrote: Hi y'all With the tektro brakes you need to leave a bit of space between the fender and the caliper arm for when the quick release is opened and the arm swings down. Re: [RBW] Re: fender clearance tektro r559 vs paul racer
I know they are brakes-a non-gratta but the Dia Compe mod 750 have just as much room as the Pauls at a fraction of the cost. If you arent concerned with being all matchy matchy I would get pauls up front and Dia compe in back to save a hundred bucks. I used just the Mod 750 brakes with VO Zeppelin fenders and Hetres on my 650b Hilsen, took a while to sort it all out, sheldon's fender nuts helped, but it is a nice look when you get it all set up right. Racers have lotsa space. I can measure if you want. My Racer arms snap open wide upon releasing the ball of the straddle cable. So they won't touch the fender. [RBW] Calling All Mixte Rivsters!
I love my Betty because it's nice to commute with. With the step-thru top tube, it's easy to load up rear bags or panniers and not worry about having to swing the leg over. Jim, I don't think I've ever told you that I Iived in the very south end of Sausalito 10 minutes from Rodeo Beach. Your photo of it with your bike brought back wonderful memories. [RBW] Re: Which Riv now?
I have a 59cm Roadeo and have ridden it for 3-4 years. I don't race and I don't carry much ( just a few tools and spares ). Its a great bike for fast club rides or for slow rides. I had previously owned a Ram and the Roadeo is very similar, but I think the Roadeo is slightly more responsive and actually has room for bigger tires ( if you need them ). Some complain about the price, but considering that its Waterford built and the lugs and build quality are very much top notch, if you are willing to put the money up, there will be no regrets. Don C. On Saturday, January 5, 2013 6:31:24 PM UTC-8, Kelly wrote: I like your idea of the Roadeo. I did close to the same mice with a Ram.. So now the ram is fender less and only a seat bag for events and club rides. The AHH has full fenders a bit larger tire frone and rear small racks with saddle sacks. My Bombadil is heavy touring and general riding too. I don't think you can go wrong either way. Just that Roadeo is a dream of a go fast. In the Marin Headlands Miwok/Bobcat/Marincello/Tennessee Valley all link together, and for the most part are relatively easy riding. I'd love to ride Bolinas Ridge when it's not so muddy. The views from the trails going up Mt Tam were awesome. But honestly, the most intriguing trails to me were out Riv's back door in the Diablo foothills. [RBW] Re: 2013 Riding Plans anyone?
I second the thing Mike said above about getting out and riding with the PDX area Riv folks. The crew that showed up for New Years Day ridehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/15966859@N07/8335963977/was excellent, but I know there are more in the area. I hope to meet them/you. I've been eyeing the OR Randonneurs calendar and debating if I want to brave a 200k. I think I do. The rando season kicks off in March with a 100k. I'll be there and will decide if I want to commit to a 200k then. A couple buddies and I have been talking about doing a tour of Eastern Oregon. Perhaps explore part of the Old West Scenic Bikewayhttp://youtu.be/ZSVYwzk9q78 . Plans are already underway for the 2nd annual Kidical Mass PDX Family Bike Camping Trip... Leave the Minivan at Home. http://youtu.be/cQEX-sfWeXk The wife and I have been talking about the possibility of a bike tour out to the coast with the kids. The logistics of that kind of trip with a 4 and 6 year old on board are a little intimidating, but the possibility of family fun and adventure seems pretty high as well. The jury's still out. I've got several day trip and overnight type destinations on my radar too but those will largely be last minute type trips... not really stuff that needs advanced planning. All of this is basically a means to the same end... to go neat places with cool people. --Smitty On Sunday, January 6, 2013 8:47:08 AM UTC-8, Kelly wrote: Dawn and I were talking about vacation schedules this year and since they changed how it was done at her work place it's been dicy getting dates that work for thing like Michigan Shoreline West and thing as such.
