[RBW] Re: Rivendell Romulus
Cecily - the fact was since I had the Bleriot ( I had just built it up ) I was not even thinking of another Rivendell at the time but it has become a habit of checking Craigslist for the possibility of finding something worthwhile in a vintage touring or road bike, but when I saw the Romulus and had some extra money just could not pass it up given it was my size. There are enough people looking for something to flip that you almost have to be looking all the time to find a good deal. I really did not think I had a chance but the owner was moving so that might have helped. Hope you find something - I would even go to Seattle if the right bike was for sale. If I was not semi retired it would be almost impossible to have the time to do it as well. Anyway, I guess I will be looking for some parts to build it up. This makes it my second Rivendell along with a Bleriot I purchased early this year. [RBW] Re: New Riv owner -- this time, with pictures!
That is the great advantage to owing something like a Rivendell - you can enjoy looking at it almost as much as riding it. The seat lug in particular has a very vintage design to it. Isn't it great to find a Rivendell locally and just when you thought it could never happen? On Monday, April 15, 2013 8:56:35 AM UTC-7, Tim Gavin wrote: I bought a '97 Rivendell Road last week. Always great to see some of the out of production models - I have a 59 cm so I suppose that makes me partial to Bleriots. [RBW] Re: Yet another post on shimmy
@Cyclofiend: Thanks for the suggestions. I am in fact light (150#), rather tall, @5,11 on a largish frame (60cm Sam), which has a tall head tube. I will try testing with concentration on COG and posture changes. @Will: Thank for that bit rom Jan H. I know that running fat tires on my Surly Big Dummy had the immediate effect of causing pronounced shimmy. I can't help but think that fat tires on a flexy frame, ridden by a light rider is the culprit. Nothing else changed in the equation! Just heavy, fat tires. It's interesting that now, I'm on skinnier, lighter tires (albeit with a heavier wheel). On Sunday, April 21, 2013 7:46:47 PM UTC-7, john wrote: Hello All. I thought I'd get some ideas on a recent shimmy development. Here is the scenario: Rider specs: John Height: 5'11 Weight: 150 soaking wet PBH: 88.9 SH: apprx 78.5 cm I ride a 60 cm. Sam HIll. I Never experienced shimmy with the stock build: Shimano deore front and rear hubs, Velocity synergy wheels, (35 cm panaracer pasella tires), noodle handlebars, SKS Longboard fenders, etc. I ride with a nitto mini front rack, nitro rear rack (the one for saddlebag support, not panniers). I ride with a Baggins Adam saddlebag. No front bag as yet because I haven't found one to fit the distance between the front rack and handlebars (I'm not particularly interested in buying a nitro F-15 rack, but instead covet a Berthoud rando bag - yet I don't know if the 28cm size will fill the gap. ) Nothing unusual for a Rivendell. Now, for the recent developments: Swapped the old wheel (Velocity Synergy) for a newly built Velocity Synergy with dynohub (Shimano Alfine). Have a lightweight BM Cyo light attatched to the right (rider's right while riding) of the rack. Switched from 35cm Panaracers to 33.3 Jack Brown Greens. Got the JBs to fit under Hono because I had issues with the Longboards on two different sets: (rubbing, chattering, due to inherent fleibility) . I also shortened the stem just a hair, to see if doing so would help alleviate some forearm discomfort I'd been having. (The old setup was stem height equidistant to saddle height.) Now the stem height is slightly below saddle height. That's it. Now: experiencing some shimmy (and less overall feeling of stability) while riding no hands sitting upright. This does not occur all the time, but it's noticeable. The response doesn't happen all the time, but still, it's there, and unnerving when it does. This response almost never happened with my old, original setup. Frustrating! Because I much prefer dyno lighting for any number of reasons, and wanted to run narrower tires to better fit underneath Honjo fenders, which I much prefer to Longboards. My upgrades were plenty expensive, too! And a pain in the neck, and time away from the bike. Still, I want what I want: the best Riv ride possible. Is there an inherent compromise here? Am I missing something? And if it is the new developments, where is the problem? Stem height? Wheel weight? Tire width? Any comments? Clues? Suggestions? I'll continue to ride and see how it goes, but honestly, as much as I like the changes I've made (except for the need to run thinner tires with is not optimal for me), I'd go back to the original set up if it meant the end to shimmy. I do not like to shimmy! Yes, obviously I will start with the easy stuff first. As in, I'll raise the stem and see what happens (or doesn't). After that, I'm frustrated. Very frustrated. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. John -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] wtb: Riv Rambouillet 58cm frameset (any color other than orange!)
Hi Eric, I have a blue 58 cm Ram which has been living alongside its AHH replacement for three years now. I've been enjoying it as my fair-weather road bike, but as my significant other keeps reminding me, it is a little redundant, not to say extravagant to keep both. So... I could be talked out of it. [RBW] Re: Yet another post on shimmy
I've rarely/never experienced a definite shimmy, but the closest I've come to it seems to have been on a Pugsley with 26x3.8 Black Floyd tires (think fatter Fat Franks). The huge contact patch of this tire serves as a large lever against the road surface. The effect is that when turning, the leverage against the road makes tire want to turn even more, and it take some effort to pull out of a turn. At speed, especially no-handed, the minor steering corrections got amplified, while the steering geometry wants to keep the bike stable and moving in a straight line. It's not terribly scary, but it's easy to reproduce and observe. I think, but can't prove, that this interplay between contact patch leverage and steering geometry is one potential reason why fatter tires tend to shimmy more. On the other hand, I've come to be acquainted with a lot of 1980s Treks with skinny tires that seem to have a shimmy (according to their owners). On Wednesday, April 24, 2013 9:45:02 AM UTC-5, john wrote: @Cyclofiend: Thanks for the suggestions. [RBW] FS: 1984 Trek 620
1984 Trek 620 Classic Trek Frame, Reynolds 531, in good condition. Never crashed, some paint chips and some oxidation at cable guides. ST, 61 C-T; TT, 58 C-C; CS 45.5; This bike was originally sold as a touring frame with 27”whees and I can ship a set of 27”wheels if buyer prefers, but the cantis will align with 700c. Today this would be called a sport-touring bike. The dimensions, tire capacity, and handling are remarkably similar to my Rambouillet. It might be a bit lighter quicker, both on handling and acceleration, but that may be my imagination. Anyway it is very versatile, will handle 32mm tires fenders, and is fun to ride. I have replaced it with a Saluki, which is a better alternative to my Ram. Bike $900; Frame Set with new Cane Creek HS and Tange BB $500 Components: Nitto stem 12cm, Noodle bars 46cm, Nitto seat post al in excellent condition. Re: [RBW] Re: Yet another post on shimmy
Check the spoke tension, trueness and roundness. You can check relative tension by plucking the spokes like a harp. In a front wheel all the spokes should ring out at the same pitch and should not be a dull thud- it should be a fairly bright note. Tension can be checked with a tensiometer, as well, but an experienced wheelbuilder could check without very quickly. Put the wheel in a truing stand or in the fork and sight along the brake pads as a guide to trueness and roundness as you spin it slowly. Wow, that is a beautiful restoration! I really like the green saddle/bar tape with the orange frame. It appears the powder coating did not obscure the lug details any more than a paint job would have. Is that accurate when looking at the bike in person? I ask because I am considering powder coating a lugged frame. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Yet another post on shimmy
OK, the first shimmy anecdote of which I have two from personal experience. I used to own a Gunnar Crosshairs, which after I stopped racing was set up as a randonneuse. I rode that bike in the Alps and on PBP. I tried mounting my Nitto mini front rack on it one day, since it had rack braze-ons on the upgraded Waterford fork. The bike immediately developed a disconcerting shimmy while pedaling and coasting even with no load at all on the rack; removing the rack made the shimmy go away; putting the rack back on returned the shimmy and loading the rack with a couple of pounds made the shimmy much worse. This was with 700 x 28 tires. I decided this bike was a rear loader and used a saddlebag instead. The second shimmy anecdote was back in my racing days. I had a Bianchi Reparto Corsa which had the typical short chainstays and long top tube, which meant the bike popped wheelies on steep hills while climbing in the saddle. It also meant the bike felt like it was plowing through corners. I had two of those bikes and they were just not good-handling bikes; my Ritchey Road and my All-Rounder are much better handling bikes (and so was the Gunnar, which I used for road races and crits in between the Bianchis and the Ritchey). Anyway, that Bianchi scared the hell out of me when I was descending the High Bridge in St. Paul in a full aero tuck with my butt hanging way off the back of the saddle (there was a little trend for this started by Marco Pantani when he was descending that way and everyone thought if a pro is doing it, it must be the way to descend). The shimmy felt different and I determined later that it was probably the 9 speed rear wheel shimmying- I had so much weight over it (I am 6'4 and was a skinny 200 lbs in my racing days) that I reduced the spoke tension to much too low in the load affected area between the contact patch and the hub, destabilizing the wheel. When I got my weight forward, the shimmy stopped. A 9 speed wheel has so much dish that only the drive side spokes are supporting the vertical load- the non-drive side spokes are nearly slack. So, only two to four of the 16 spokes on that side were predominantly carrying my weight at any given time. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] 5/2 Fast Diet?
Since Paleo seems to be fair game as a topic, I'll ask if anyone else is trying the Michael Mosley 5/2 Fast Diet? I've seen the PBS episodes, both on diet and on exercise, and read the diet book. I find some of the science (not that I'm a scientist) to be similar to what Taubes advocates, but the methodology is quite different. I've never read and am not familiar with the 5/2 Fast Diet. I follow the Perfect Health Diet, which is 70-80% fat by calories, the balance carbs and protein. In general I eat one meal a day, so do a 22-26 hour fast most days. My brain does much better when it enters ketosis regularly (much more stable brain energy, focus, etc.). Everything I've read cautions against a high protein diet. Also, source of fat and fish and meat, dairy, and eggs matters greatly -- wild caught or 100% grass fed or wild pastured (depending on what beastie it is). Also I'd suggest eating when you are hungry rather than following some arbitrary schedule. I have not been hungry in any of the fasting I do. My body simply burns fat stores and chugs along happily. Some days I have two meals. I've yet to go longer than 32 hours fasting, and have no plans to try for longer unless it just happens. Oh, and I often ride 6-8 hours fasted. Feels great! A lot of what you're saying is consistent with what Mosley has written, and his followers testimonials. He's skittish about diets with too much protein, but warns that some protein is needed on fasting days (600 total calories for a male), because our bodies only store protein in muscle mass. Typically a fast lasts 32 hours, but can be 24. Like many of the current diet trends, he also advocates getting away from processed foods because of hidden calories/chemicals. Sounds reasonable from what I know. Have fun learning how your body works! here are a few thins I've learned: -- Exercising aerobically (I follow Maffetone's definition, defined as 180 beats per minute minus your age as the upper threshold, or simply so you can hold an easy conversation without being out of breath), we burn mostly fat, with some carbs used as kindling for the fat burning fire. So we need both. Our bodies store far more fat, and only some carbs, so it makes sense that we are supposed to be fat burners. -- Ride food: If I know I'll be out for more than 4 hours, I take something. Usually pemmican (high fat, some protein) or equivalent. I have not needed carbs since I eat potatoes (white or sweet) or white rice with my meal. Untill you are comfortable without carrying carbs, dates are packed and can boost your ability to burn fat with their carb kindling. -- The more your body gets familiar with being fat burning, the more you will eat to genuine hunger rather than a glucose crash. It was well over a year before I discovered I wasn't hungry for 24 hours. So ease into it. -- If you start to feel a loss of energy, stop for 5-10 minutes. Don't eat anything. Drink some water. Your liver is very efficient at converting (I can't remember what) into carbs. You'll take off feeling quite refreshed. At least I do. -- Consider eliminating all grains and veggie oils, and yes, certainly all processed foods. We get a lot of use out of our VitaMix blender, as well as our dehydrator (for camping food). Have fun! [RBW] Re: 5/2 Fast Diet?
Although I consider Taubes a charlatan, I have read up and experimented with many types of intermittent fasting (including 5/2) and think that some sort of regular or semi-regular fasting is a great idea for many reasons. Usually, fasting conjures up images of hippies talking about life force and cleansing but there are many practical applications of it being practiced. Check out the true north clinic for one. They basically treat diseases by water fasts and have good success. For someone already healthy, it's good to remember that fasting has been around for a long time--forced at times of famine and voluntary at other times (usually religious in nature). We are well-suited to it. Who came up with 3 meals and 2 snacks a day anyway and why is that the best way to eat? I suspect that fasting played some role in the original Mediterranean diet study results which date back to the 1950s or 1960s (if I recall correctly). [RBW] Re: 5/2 Fast Diet?
Usually, fasting conjures up images of hippies... I got a kick out of this. Yes indeed. And of millennia of fasting faithful of many kinds, including Catholics every Lent. [RBW] Re: Barefoot Friendly Pedals
I have followed this post but hesitant to chime in until today. Last fall I toyed with the idea of buying a pair of the 5 finger shoe, but opted instead for a pair of new balance minimalist sneakers. I wore them in the shop all winter and really liked them. Today it finally got warm enough to try them on the bike. I'm a pretty good tester because I had surgery on the ball of my right foot a couple of years ago and still get a hot spot after more than two hours in almost any cycle shoe. I rode today on the White Urban pedal with Bruce Gordon Clips for about 1 1/4 hrs. and really liked the feel. My size 13 shoes don't usually fit well on clipless pedals and my Austin sneakers just barely fit under the large boot clip, but these new balance fit perfectly, stayed put on the pedal and felt fine. I have a pair with the outer rings filed down a bit. -- I ride mostly midfoot on the pedal. -- One thought on possibly worth trying is the Gripster pedals with a thin Vibram soling (which I have) somehow screwed into the cleat treads with broad flathead screws. This is pretty clearly not shimmy, but rather speed wobble. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Barefoot Friendly Pedals
There used to be some low end but possibly worth trying GT branded barefoot pedals which were rounded solid rubberized block pedals, bigger than normal rubber pedals, smaller than BMX pedals. I see that electra has some, but they seem to have a hole in the center which may or may not be a good idea. We used to sell tons of these at the shop I worked at in TN when people would want to ride their cruisers barefoot on the beach on their yearly carolina beach vacation. We also did lots of yearly chain replacement for these bikes as they were ridden in the surf and put away salty and sat for a year before doing it again. Probably a bit lower end than you had in mind, but I seem to remember the GT ones could be repacked to spin pretty nicely. [RBW] Re: Wheelset for Ram
Patrick, I have had a number of Mavic rims in my life and have gotten good service from all of them. ( The Ebisu I just sold has a front wheel of Campy NR Mavic MA 40 which are ancient and going strong.) I have two sets of wheels with Open Pro rims one set is 36/32 and the other 32/28 and they have both held up very well for many years under general road riding, including lots of bad roads and dirt roads. I have not tried to use them for loaded touring but it doesn't sound like that's your plan. As for any decline in quality, I would talk to a professional wheel builder. These guys can often spot a poorly made rim while building. I think for the use you are talking about Phil Wood are over built, heavy, and expensive. Great for touring but overkill on day trips. I have a pair of Open Pro on White Ind. Hubs - lighter, $100 cheaper, and a very well made hub. Some people say they are noisy, but that is mostly in the shop. Above 12 mph the coasting noise is a barely audible hum. Michael On Tuesday, April 16, 2013 9:02:55 PM UTC-4, Patrick Moore wrote: Two questions: First, I want to sell the skinny wheelset for the Fargo: Bike shop built Sun Rhyno Lite rims with 32 14 g spokes laced to (rear) black SRAM 8//9/10 Shimano compatible disk cassette hub with Avid BB7 160 mm rotor (not bent!), no cassette; front ditto to Shimano DH 3DN72 set up with Avid rotor as above using Problem Solver's converter (ie, from splined to 6 bolt). Plus pair of moderately used Kevlar bead 35 mm Kojaks and two pairs of 28-35 mm tubes. Wheels have no more than 1,200 miles on them as they shared Fargo duty with the SnoCat wheelset. I see Rhyno Lite wheelsets on sale for as little as $150 (26). What's a fair price for this one? Second: I want a nice silver wheelset for the Ram. The ideal would have sporty-ish rim like an Open Pro, rear 36 and front 32, 14/15 butted spokes, hubs at least 105 level. Best would be a 7 speed wheelset that I could respace to 132.5 But 32/32 or 36/36 and 7 or 8/9/10 are fine. 2a. What are my options for similar rim/hub combos? I mean, what other rims are comparable to the Open Pro? I want something sturdy, sub 500 gram, silver, good reputation. I've used Sun rims like the M14A and the ME14A and they are inexpensive, light, and apparently bullet proof. A semi aero profile is fine. Would prefer something as wide as the Open Pro. As to hubs, as long as they are at Hyperglide, the bearings are decent and they are silver or, at least, not ugly, I'm not particular. 2b. What are the best sources for such wheels -- quality, customer service, price, in that order? 2c. Does anyone have something like that to trade or sell? The cushiest tape I have used is the Cinelli cork gel tape. I may end up using it on all my bars, but currently have it on two. Brooks leather on the others, which isn't cushy. I recently rebuilt it with Deore XT 10 speed (9 speed rear derailleur to work with 10 speed bar end shifters), Tubus Cosmo rear rack, Nitto M-12 front, Nitto H20 cages, Salsa Woodchippers (my favorite bar yet, even though it took some dirt drop stem modification to get the sharp curves through the stem), XT V-brakes with Cane creek V-brake compatible brake levers and platform pedals that Rivendell sells. Also honey B-17 and a White Brothers suspension seat post (the best I have found yet, and I tried a BUNCH. Too bad they don't make them anymore). Fenders are Planet Bikes which are polycarbonate and seem to last much longer than the ESGs(?). The frame bag I made myself and is made from heavy green canvas. I had it built before with a proper Rivendell build, which was great for the past 12 years or so. Thought I would try something new. I love the new 24-36 low gear for my bad knees and steep trails are easy now. Not too sure about platforms yet. They are great everywhere but on long rides and off road. I feel so naked on them, like I could get bucked off at the slightest bump. Not being able to bunny hop is weird too. This is my car. I don't own a carbon spewing, children killing, money sucking car. This sucks up my money insteadlol. Now I ask the groups wisdom. Do I paint the head tube ivory? Now it is solid powder coat gloss olive and looks utilitarian and off roady. I think it needs to be classed up a bit. I have had three back surgeries and three carpal tunnel surgeries, hence the HIGH bars. Thanks for looking and thanks for your head tube advice in advance... [RBW] 64cm Rambouillet - Handlebar bag/decaleur combinations
Hello everyone, I was hoping someone in the group could give me a recommendation on a tall handlebar bag and decaleur that will work on a frame this large (64cm). My handlebar is high above the nitto front rack and I'm not sure if there is a decaleur that will reach down low enough to connect to a bag. I was looking at the Berthoud 28 bag because it is so tall and was curious if the VO Decaleur fork receiver will reach down enough. http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/racks-decaleurs/decaleurs/vo-decaleur-reciever-5mm-posts-218.html Anyone have any experience with a larger Rivendell frame and handlebar bag? [RBW] Re: Pictures of the worlds most perfect Atlantis (for me). Should I paint the head tube ivory?
Hi Reid, I keep my cable lock and a skinny cable, to lock my panniers and seatseat post, in the largest part of the bag. I made that area large enough to hold both, coiled up. In the rear I keep my extra tube, patch kit, Park tool mini thingee, and a small pump. The pump is held to the inside top of the bag with a sewn in sheath, to leave room underneath. I also keep glass cleaner wipes and usually a bunch of napkins for my runny nose...(Still cold here, although this weekend is supposed to be warmYea!). If I was to make another one, I would make it a little larger to hold a couple of bungies too. Re: [RBW] Pictures of the worlds most perfect Atlantis (for me). Should I paint the head tube ivory?
Actually, my saddle is 12 years old. When I originally got it, I treated it with snow seal, multiple times, and heating it to help it soak in. It didn't soften up for years! Just in the past two years or so, with Obenaufs (sp?) it is softening. Much more comfortable.lol. [RBW] Re: New Soma San Marcos owner and pictures
I like the way this bike rides though I cannot yet really comment on it because it arrived with the wrong fork. It currently has the the fork for the smaller 650b frames and even though the 700c wheels and tires fit the lower trail makes the bike a bit of a squirrel. Soma's customer service in this regard was tremendous in that all the bike shop here on Guam had to do was to call them to get a replacement. However, I am waiting for the mail. You may have heard of the Slow boat to China Well the boat to Guam is slower! So when the proper fork arrives that will have to be changed out. The only immediate issue with the fork is that I have to use a short reach brake caliper on the front and the rake looks a bit funny looking at the bike you can tell it has the wrong fork I was expecting this bike to handle a lot slower than it does. Looking at the slack angles and low BB I assumed it would be more like a touring bike but that is not true at all. Maybe the shorter than normal front center is the reason. It has a smooth ride and despite the fork issue steers well has long as I pay attention. Indeed, I've a triathlon bike in Hong Kong that is far more squirrelly than the Soma and the Tri bike has no issue with the fork Most of my components are pretty straight forward. Lots of bike have Veloce shifters. The only realy odd parts are the flat-bar shifters and I can really recommend those. They take an hour or so to get used to but once you figure them out they are really nice. The weird thing is that they are not a push/push setup where you only use your thumb but a push to go to a bigger sprocket/chain-ring and pull on a trigger behind the brake lever to go to a smaller sprocket/Chain-ring. This is kind of strange at first but easy to learn and now when I ride the other bike I find myself reaching for the Campagnolo downshift trigger. The harder thing is that you can shift more than one gear at a time and it takes a while to learn to push or pull just enough to shift only once; they take some technique. However, once you spend the time to get used to them I think you can shift faster (not that matters a whole lot to me) with them than with a push/push system. Two other things that are notable about the shifters. First is that unlike Ergo versions they have no quick release so you need to use non-Campagnolo caliper brakes which on the Soma is not a big deal. Second Campagnolo got the location of the gear indicator exactly right. I have used 78-speed flat-bar shifters on other bikes and the gear indicator was generally worthless because you could never see it. By placing it in front of the bar rather than under the bar Campy made it useful and with 10 cogs in back it is nice to have the visual reference I am still a bit scared of the Vento Reaction CX Wheels. They just don't look like they have enough spokes but they are fairly light and seem to hold my weight. They are certainly light enough without being stupid light. I've put about 200 miles on this bike in the 3 weeks or so I've had it just making loops around the university campus and riding to Tamuning for lunch on Fridays. Once I get the right fork on the bike I am planning to do what is called the South Island Loop which is about 60 miles around the hilly southern 1/2 of Guam On Thursday, April 18, 2013 3:30:49 PM UTC+10, Fai Mao wrote: Greetings After a 5 week delay to get most of the parts the San Marcos is on the road. Re: [RBW] thoughts on the current state of the Riv-ish bicycle marketplace

Then I casually said, You know, with the right saddle set up, you don't need padding... The ideas work for a lot of people. So true! It is a good thing there was someone like you to help her out. As he puts it “the market is too race-centric; carbon fiber, electric shifting, full suspension, 11 speed, doesn’t really enhance the enjoyment of cycling. In the 1970’s and 80’s we cycled to be closer to nature, for the environment, for our health, for the simple beauty of cycling.” For these reasons SunXCD will focus on touring and randonneuring components which were the focus of SunTour during its heyday. Of course, most of us Riv fans will note that this echoes Grant's published opinions over the years, as well as the sales pitches of a few brands who've tried, with varying success, to get into the Riv-ish segment of the market. I discovered Riv almost 10 years ago because I wanted a certain type of bike that didn't seem to exist at local shops. What I wanted was a touring bike, and the Atlantis I bought filled that desire. Had I been able to find a Trek 520 locally, or if the LHT existed back then, my story may have taken some different turns. But it was certainly true back then that any readily available higher quality bike was going to be some kind of impractical skinny tire road bike. Not my style. But things have changed drastically. Sure, many of us are baffled by electronic shifting and seemingly delicate CF and 11-sp cassettes that have become available. But at the same time, a HUGE variety of touring and adventure bikes, parts, and accessories have become not only available, but mainstream. So while I wish Junzo and SunTour success, I thought his rationale seemed hollow, or at least 5-10 years too late. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] What'r you using for cush on your Moustache Bars under your tape?
I'm a mustache bar hater, so I kinda suspect the chunky padding is necessary to make the damned things minimally tolerable. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Just more tape... double-layered. Re: [RBW] Re: Yet another post on shimmy
Well... I hate to be pedantic about semantics, but words is all we've got here. I think it's helpful if we agree that Shimmy is what Jobst describes - specific oscillation of the front end of the bicycle - the lateral oscillation of the head tube about the road contact point of the front wheel which causes spontaneous steering oscillation of the front wheel. There are certainly enough variables in the motion of the bicycle that causes shudders - having a wheel out of round will cause it to oscillate, and out of true causes side-to-side vibration. These tend to be speed-specific, but are different phenomena than what is being discussed here. - J -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
