Foy that is suppose to be here next week. I started the parts collection.
So far I have the Stronglight crank in 165 from Riv, Shimano XT rear,
Ultegra triple front, MKS pedals, Nitto stem and seatpost, Dura Ace bar end
shifers, XT cassette, Brooks saddle, Silver brakes, SRAM 991 chain, Marks
front Nitto rack, Wald basket, Pletcher kickstand, essentially everything
 but the wheels and tires.
The question is what do I do for wheels?

Should I just buy pre-built wheels from Riv and call it a day? The amount
she will ride it (5-10 times a year) says this is the most cost effective.

Since I went with the best on everything else, should I really buy custom
built wheels? Hubs are an easy choice but what rim would compliment that
 bike?

Should I build them up myself? I have never built wheels but I just bought
the Park 2.2 wheel truing stand and really how hard can building a wheel
for a 100 pound woman be? I am mechanically inclined, never taking my bike
to a bike shop for anything but pressing in a headset.

Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

I someone has a set that they think would be appropriate to sell then let
me know, I might consider it.

I get some shimmy on my Hilsen usually at low speed and with
my carradice saddle bag half full. It doesn't bother me too much and I can
ride no hands with no issues. I personally think it's a function of my
weight ( I weigh 160 lbs) and having a load only on the rear. I'm getting
ready to put racks front and rear for touring so I'm curious how the bike
will handle. This is all very subjective and no actual science behind my

[RBW] The Betty Foy Project

2013-04-29 Thread bobish
Build them yourself. 100 lb rider x 10 rides year = can't mess it up. Building
wheels is not difficult, just tedious, IMO. I gave it up because I don't have
the patience and got tired of dealing with all the spoke length inventory and
other such details. But any wheels I've built—from the first to the last
set—served me well and it was good to demystify the process. Building a
wheelset or three will also make you a better truer of wheels as you'll get a
better sense of why a wheel is out of true.

The new Cat Eye wired models are Velo 7, Velo 8, Velo 9.
I suppose they work well enough. I have a Velo 9.
The mounting system is cheaper,
Also some have dubious features such as calories consumed, or a calculation
of carbon offset.
These replace the useful feature (no longer available) of being able to set
the odometer (which now I believe just goes up to then resets to 0).
Wireless to me means one more battery to replace, and dealing with
interference problems.

Wheel World has the Cateye Mity 8 (wired) available on closeout for $20.
I've got a bunch of them. Functions I use: odometer, average, distance

The Strada Wireless has the same functions in a simple, small wireless

Battery life with wireless is typically less than with wired, and you
have twice as many batteries. On the other hand, installation is
simpler.

The battery life on the (now discontinued) Wireless Micro was
dramatically less than I had grown used to on the (now very long
discontinued) Cateye Cordless II's I used on most of my bikes in the
1990s and 2000s (the last one of which quit early this year, wouldn't
work at under 40 degrees even with brand new batteries) replaced by the
Strada Wireless).

The Strada Wireless is too new for me to have any idea of battery life.

I've never seen them in person, but according to specs the wired Velo 7
and Velo 9 only have 1 trip distance, which doesn't work for me because
I rely on trip distance 2 to keep track of mileage since the last chain
cleaning. The additional features of the Velo 9, calorie consumption
and carbon offset, are IMHO entirely worthless.

Re: [RBW] Question for modern geometry race bike only riders who later went to Rivendells.

2013-04-29 Thread Scott Henry
Yes, you are getting older but if you are comfy on your old bike, than I
wouldn't change it. 1.5cm of handlebar drop isn't really too much of a
racing fit anyway, that's less than my riv-ish fit.

Ride whats comfortable and don't get too hung up on matching the look of
other Riv style bikes. Personally, I'm not comfortable looking like Mary
Poppins. All of my bikes are set for my comfort and contacts points can
vary greatly depending on the style of bike I'm riding.

Cheers,
Scott

*I am wondering if you had any trouble adapting from race geometry fit

 how you got through it.*

 Here is what I mean:
I started on a race geometry bike and rode it for 3.5 years. I was only
about 1.5cm below saddle height with the drop bars. So it was nothing
 extreme.
Always comfy, but wished I could sit more upright for better view
sometimes. I wanted to sit higher, have more stable wider tires, and
fenderability. I like the traditional steel type frame looks and
 appointments, too.

 Now:
Got a Bleriot last August, and a new Sam in Feb. 2013.
They are great rides, and comfy during the rides, but since last September
I pay for it later in the day with low back pain, etc, that can last into
 the next day.
No matter what set up I try, I seem to have problems. Noodle drop versions
 of the bikes.
I am puzzled by this really wierd and frustrating experience. Am I just
getting old (44 now)? Medically I seem to be fine, and doc seems to think
my back is fine. More upright is supposed to be better for the back and
neck. Maybe sitting bolt upright, or sitting low is good for the back, but
anything between 40-80 degrees isn't for some?

*I can only imagine that my problem is that, for whatever reason, my body
just doesn't like to sit upright.* Seems like anything above saddle
height for the bars causes pain. But I am happy to have the wider tires and
fenderability features. Now if I could just dial in the fit.
I guess I will try to replicate my race fit onto the Rivs and see how it
 goes.

Any thoughts, experiences? Just losing my sanity?

Re: [RBW] Cycling computers

2013-04-29 Thread Bruce Baker
Hi John,
I'm suprised I haven't seen mapmyride pop in this discussion. I have been
using this since 2010 and like it a lot. It is free and generates a bunch
of statistics on daily, weekly, monthly and annual distance. It also breaks
down each ride into segments. The iphone app for this works great. There
were a few snags early on but most seem to be worked out at this time.

Hi all. Thought I'd ask all of you who use computers for recomendations.
I've been on the fence about using a computer to track mileage for some
time now, but I believe I'd like to try.

 The criteria:

 1. It has to be very simple to operate and easy to read.
 2. I don't need or want heart rate monitor or anything like altitude or
 anything complicated.
 3. I'm just interested in tracking mileage (how far was my ride today? I
seldom know - which is not always a bad thing, but I get curious).
 4. I don't want to spend a lot of money. I'm thinking I can do this for
 $30 or so?

 Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Question for modern geometry race bike only riders who later went to Rivendells.

2013-04-29 Thread Matt Beebe
I'd second the micro-adjustments approach, and maybe try slight changes to
your seat-angle (if you haven't already), since it's your lower back that
is hurting. Obviously this is just a WAG, since it could be any number
of things and how the hell would i know, but I'm just saying that's what I
would try.Sometimes a smidgen of a degree this way or that can make a
huge difference. Anyway good luck and hope you find something that
works.

I quite agree with about 2/3 of of the prescriptions and was surprised to
learn that G likes Brooks saddles more for looks and loops than for comfort
superior to that of plastic saddles.

Certainly the loops are a great feature. Plastic saddles, cheap, expensive
or in between are torture devices for me. Looking forward to trying the
new Brooks Cambium when they come out this year.

+1 for Cyclemeter. One POCES (piece of Chinese electric shite) to take care,
not only of the data for four (4) (IV) bikes, but also to tell your time,
download your email, tell your temperature, find your directions, get your

[RBW] 56cm Rivendell Atlantis

2013-04-29 Thread Christopher Miller Rosales
Hey all,

Letting go of a Rivendell Atlantis, 56cm in original blue/green/whatever
you would like to call it. Beautiful. Designed for 26 tires, and currently
rolling a nice wheelset. This is an older Atlantis with a bit if beausage,
but mostly in great condition. No major paint chips, some smudges here and
there and a few scratches like any good touring frame will have.

I have linked the Flickr page with pictures of the set up. Also on there,
find pictures of my Long Haul Trucker that's on local Craigslist, would
give a KILLER deal if you are interested in both
(http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/3766174918.html).

Rear wheel is a Phil Wood laced to beefy Maverick rims, 7 speed Sunrace
freewheel, front is Suntour XC Pro to matching Maverick rim. Michelin City
tires with tons of tread left.

Selling Frame/Fork/Headset(ultegra) + wheelset for $1,300.

Pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/21267164@N02/8690649369/in/photostream/

Price is for local sale (San Francisco Bay Area), will be willing to ship
if bike doesn't sell in a week or so. Thank you all!

Cheers,
Chris

[RBW] Need a recommendation for 2-bike storage system

2013-04-29 Thread Kieran J
Hey there,

I'm short on space in my apartment, and I've begun to look at the
horizontal hanging apparatuses to hang two bikes, one above the other. Like
this one:

Swagman Hang
Ithttp://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/Cycling/BikeStorageRacks/PRD~5012-400/swagman-hang-it-bike-hanger.jsp

The reviews on this particular one are mixed, but mostly positive. Anyone
else have experience with this style of hanging system, or have better
results with something else? The space I have to work with is a 5' x 9'
wall.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Question for modern geometry race bike only riders who later went to Rivendells.

2013-04-29 Thread capnjack
I am not a doctor so this is just advice from a guy who sympathizes with
you regarding back discomfort on a bike ride.
I am almost 66 and last year I quit riding and later sold my Specialized
Roubaix Pro with all the top of the line accessories.
Discovering my body was no longer happy crunched over in a racing
position most of the time, I searched for a frame that was more relaxed,
and I wanted a steel bike frame. I also wanted a Riv, but bought a new
Soma Fabrications ES because it fit me as close as a custom frame would
have and for MUCH less money. The Soma gives me a considerably smoother
ride and is a great confidence builder. I would not go back. If there were
only one piece of advice I would give anyone, it would be to get an
INDEPENDENT professional fit before riding any further.
Yet still, after about 50 or so miles, I would sometimes get a little
tweak in my lower back. Like you, I believe it is from the more upright
positioning of the bars on the new bike.
I read that it is due to the compression of sitting and bouncing for a long
time. So now I have begun taking water breaks every 5 to 10 miles and
just stopping for about 60 to 90 seconds. I also found that my back is
happier if I try to straighten my body out on the bike by rotating my hips
forward just a little. This eases the pressure on my back and makes long
rides more pleasurable, which is why I ride in the first place. The bike
feels so much like a part of me now, and that is because I just happen to
be lucky enough to have found a frame that meets my true body geometry.
Meanwhile, try adjusting your saddle back (or up, if needed) by just a few
mm. As long as you still have a good pedal stroke angle, your lower back
will open and allow blood to flow which will keep you from getting the
soreness you speak of.
There are several steel frames that come off the shelf pretty close to most
riders. And, it is worth the investment, in my humble opinion, to get a
professional prescription, and then find a frame that is most suited to
your body. Once I figured this out, cycling really became a lot more fun
for me. I hope this advice will help you, too.
Keep safe,
Jack Easley

 how you got through it.*

 Here is what I mean:
I started on a race geometry bike and rode it for 3.5 years. I was only
about 1.5cm below saddle height with the drop bars. So it was nothing
 extreme.
Always comfy, but wished I could sit more upright for better view

fenderability.

[RBW] Re: Not too many people actively posting on this site for such a big amount of Rivs released to the wild over the years.

2013-04-29 Thread Julian
One possible issue may be that on this list posts of newer or less-frequent
members seem to be held for a day or two before showing up (or at least
that's my experience). I've commented a few times on posts but my replies
tend to hit the list a day or two after the conversation has moved on.
Assuming this is not just my imagination, but an actual moderator
position/decision to filter new posters it makes me (and, perhaps. other
new and/or infrequent posters) less likely to comment next time (if so,
that's not necessarily a critique of moderators, just an observation of one
possible side-effect of active moderation) .

[RBW] Re: Question for modern geometry race bike only riders who later went to Rivendells.

2013-04-29 Thread Jay Lonner
I'm also 44, so can relate to the aches and pains of aging. I've wrestled
with low back pain and hand numbness using Noodle bars on my Rambouillet
for the past few years. It's been a while since I've ridden a bike with a
more aggressive geometry, but I don't remember having had those problems
before. Maybe it's age, maybe it's an overall loss of fitness and
flexibility since I don't ride as much or as hard as I used to. Hard to say.

I recently changed the setup on my utility/commuting bike from Mustache
bars to Bosco bars, and it has absolutely revolutionized my riding. All-day
comfort and wonderful views from the upright stance. I'm not as fast, but
I'm enjoying riding so much more that I'm racking up a lot more miles. I
haven't been on the Rambouillet since making this switch, because honestly
the new setup is just so fun and relaxing. If your riding habits can
accommodate this type of handlebar, I would encourage it strongly. But if
you're interested in faster group road rides where drop bars are pretty
much expected, this might not be a workable approach for you. Still, with
both a Bleriot and a Sam in your stable, it sure seems like you've got the
flexibility to experiment along these lines.

The Mustache bars are for sale, by the way, along with a set of Dirtdrop
bars and a Dirtdrop stem...

my back is fine.

[RBW] Re: Barefoot Friendly Pedals

2013-04-29 Thread bo richardson
I have size ten and a half feet and the gripsters work well for me. but for
a larger foot
i suggest the larger Tioga pedal. It may have started as a BMX pedal

It has spikes
I wonder if a thin rubbery sheet could be put on the pedal and
anchored with the allen key pins screwed through the rubber

because of the increased proprioception (feedback from the feet that lets
the body know where it is in space) I require due to brain stem damage and
 resultant vertigo.
-- I am possibly acquiring a second bike (fixie) and thus in need of a
second pair of barefoot friendly pedals.
-- I have and love my oak woodie Bullseye Pedals on my Hunga. These are
 perhaps the ideal barefoot pedal.
-- I'm doubtful about the clip less platform pedal set up from Bike Tinker
because of the inherent, albeit slight, rotational play inherent to
 clipless.
-- I live and run mountain trails barefoot or moccasined, so my feet are
well acclimated to rough/uneven surfaces; however, my experience with
pedals tells me that on rides longer than 2-3 hours, the foot gets tender
 from the same pressure points.
-- The pedal to beat (aside from the oak woodies) is the MKS Touring pedal
with rubber blocks. I have a pair with the outer rings filed down a bit.
-- I ride mostly midfoot on the pedal.

-- One thought on possibly worth trying is the Gripster pedals with a
thin Vibram soling (which I have) somehow screwed into the cleat treads
with broad flathead screws. Any suggestions here greatly appreciated.

 Thanks for your input!

having had those problems before. Maybe it's age, maybe it's an
overall loss of fitness and flexibility since I don't ride as much or
as hard as I used to. Hard to say.

Can't say about the back pain, but hand numbness is certainly a matter
of position, and nothing to do with aggressive geometry (if that means
front end geometry).

Most of my bikes use the Nitto 176 Dream bar. I put the 177 Noodle
on one and had issues until I tilted the bar so the flats were
horizontal and the ramps were sloped a bit downward.

Back 30-40 years ago I had chronic hand numbness issues that I tried to
solve with shorter and shorter stems, to no avail. I finally got a
professional fitting and (surprise!) learned what I needed was a
significantly longer stem.

From the perspective of 70, relating 44 to aging is right there in
ROTFLOL territory.

[RBW] Re: Not too many people actively posting on this site for such a big amount of Rivs released to the wild over the years.

2013-04-29 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Just to address the comments about moderation:

At this point, I'm still the bottleneck. No one else is co-moderating
posts.

I release moderated comments in one of two ways - the first is via email.
If I reply to notification of a moderated post, it goes through. This is
quicker, but does not change the moderation status of a new member. So,
I've tended to use it less and less.

The second method is via the web interface. I have to be logged in, but
can 1) post with no change to status, 2) post and update status, 3) delete
and ban user and 4) delete post. I've been trying to use this method more
frequently, as it allows me to pass through newer users in one step.
Otherwise, I have to access the specific account and manually select and
change the status.

If someone emails me directly, I'll generally make the change manually.
But, since I'm doing this for love rather than money, I try to keep the
bulk of the changes efficient. Which means that when a new user posts for
a second or third time, the bell finally goes off in my brain and I
recognize the name. If it's not snarky, off-topic, related to a buy/sell
transaction or some other reasonable trigger, then I'll pass it through and
change the status.

Statuses are updated by checking a box and then selecting an action,
which means there's an imperfect variable (me) involved. Sometimes, I've
got 20 or 30 spam tries sitting to be moderated, and one valid post. I
have, upon occasion accidentally deleted (and banned) all of them with an
errant keystroke (you guessed it, there is no Undo for that). More
commonly, there are 3 or 4 for sale posts and a new user's interesting
and on-topic post get's passed through without updating their status.
Sometimes I can recall the persons identity and find them. Most of the
time I figure they will post again and I'll get it the next time.

All that (painstakingly) being said, I've changed some things around so
that I'm passing things through 2 or 3 times a day, so there shouldn't be
an excessive delay unless I'm in the studio or away from all internet
access.

Thanks again to all for their contributions to this list.

[RBW] FS: Grey Banana Bag

2013-04-29 Thread Greg J
I bought this grey with leather trim banana bag from a listmember here a
while bag, but never used it. It is very lightly used, I'd say a 9 out of
10. The grey canvas is clean with no marks. It was made by the Duluth
company, and the round leather patch says Duluth rather than Baggins. The
banana bag is a really handy bag, big enough for everything you'd want to
take along for a day ride (wallet, phone, tools, tube, a little food) with
room on top and loops to lash a wind breaker.

Since I don't think I'll be using this bag in the near future (I already
have 2 others), I'd like to see if anyone on the list is
interested. I'm thinking $50 shipped.

Thanks, and I can email pics tonight if you're interested.

Should I build them up myself? I have never built wheels but I just bought

[RBW] Re: Question for modern geometry race bike only riders who later went to Rivendells.

2013-04-29 Thread Bryan
Sounds about right to me, Michael. I don't like bars above saddle height.
How high do you have the bars on the Rivs? I have albatross bars on an old
mountain bike that I use for kid hauling and commuting in lousy weather.
It's really fun for short rides, but I can't log more than about 15 miles
on that bike without getting uncomfortable. On a Riv with Noodles at saddle
height, I can ride all day without discomfort. That wasn't the case when I
used to ride bikes with steeper angles and lower bars.

[RBW] Bosco Bars Great on Beach Cruisers!

2013-04-29 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
I was building a bike to donate to a charity auction, a sort of beach cruiser
remake of a late '70s Fuji mixte, and it occurred to me that the spare set of
Bosco bars languishing in my shop might work well on it. Turns out they're as
great for that kind of casual upright bike as they are for touring, and they
look perfect on the new 3-speed cruiser version, too.

Forgive me a couple of pictures:

[RBW] Re: Question for modern geometry race bike only riders who later went to Rivendells.

2013-04-29 Thread Jonathan Poor
another data point:

My two main bikes, a 59 cm '89 steel road race bike (made in Philly by
Harry Havnoonian), and a 60 cm '98 Rivendell Road. I would get a tired
back after 20 - 30 mile rides on the Riv, but still felt super relaxed
after similar rides on the HH. Both bikes had more or less the same 2 inch
drop from saddle to bars.

After a while, I thought, perhaps the stem is too long on the Riv (it is a
gorgeous Nitto Pearl 12). Not wanting to swap the stem (since it is so
purdy), I slammed my saddle forward about an inch on the seat post (even
though that didn't look right to me).

Bingo! no more sore back! So it was the reach that was doing it. Maybe
changing the stem would have worked as well, but who knows?

[RBW] Re: Question for modern geometry race bike only riders who later went to Rivendells.

2013-04-29 Thread William
I have held for years the opinion that there were essentially two positions
that were/are comfortable to me.

1. Leaned over with a flat back and my butt back such that my torso is
just hanging there, held aloft by the tension in my hamstrings. My hands
are just laying on the bars. My hands, arms, shoulders doing nothing to
hold my upper body aloft. The more flexible I am, the more leaned over I
can get. If the bars are lower or farther than my flexibility allows, then
I'm reaching for the bars and that's bad.

2. Bolt upright, so my hands are just laying on the handlebars

For me, everything in-between these two positions is no good for any
appreciable amount of time. As time passes with me neglecting stretching,
I notice that my happy place for position 1 has gotten somewhat more
upright, but I attribute that to flexibility diminishing, which is only
incidentally correlated with me aging. I know how to get that back if I
want to.

[RBW] Re: Question for modern geometry race bike only riders who later went to Rivendells.

2013-04-29 Thread john
I'm 44 also (There see to be a lot of us). I've struggled with low back
pain for the past 5 years or so. I work on my feet all day lifting heavy
objects and bending, stooping, tweaking (I'm a chef) so this doesn't help
matters.

What is interesting to me is the reverse of what is supposed to help. In
my case, I always had the bars about parallel with the saddle. Then when I
got my Sam (4 years ago, I guess), I placed the bars higher than the saddle
by an inch or two. I did this because Riv mantra suggested this would help
my back. But after riding this way for a couple years, I was still
experiencing pain, and also a new sensation: hand numbness.

I got a professional bike fit done, and we installed a shorter stem (I
always felt like I was reaching too far on the original setup, with a 10cm
stem, so now I ride a 7 cm stem). We also lowered the bars to be about even
with the saddle. This was an improvement. I felt more comfortable, and
could ride for longer without pain.

Now, however, after still experiencing some hand numbness (I use noodle
bars, by the way), I dropped my bars below saddle height by an inch-or-so,
to experiment. You know what? I prefer this position for many reasons.

1. I experience less low back fatigue. I think this is mostly due to the
fact that I'm using more of my core muscles and being able to push into the
stroke. I'm a thin, light guy, skinny as a whip and not very powerful. The
low position helps me transmit power, and, I think, save my low back.

2. My hand numbness is much reduced, if not altogether eliminated. I may
end up switching bars at some point.

In sum, I don't think there is any right way, but your way. I was surprised
to find that by lowering my bars, I found relief. But as others have
suggested, it was micro adjustments for a period of years, in my case, that
led to this position. I kept getting progressively lower and lower until I
now know I wouldn't be comfortable going any lower.

I have founded a theory that skinny guys like me, who are getting older and
not able to ride as often as they used to, may well benefit from getting
more aero - not the other way around!

John.

I'm with Steve on this, no cadence for me, please. Had one when getting
back into cycling and was just as happy to get rid of it when the bike was
sold.

The new wired Cateye Velo models are cheap, but they seem to work okay. My
favorite was the Enduro series as it had a larger diameter wire which holds
up well. Mine is still going after about a decade.

Did try a wireless for a bit, but there are too many areas where I ride
that have interference with the sensor. Mainly 3 or 4 underground
pipelines on or next to bike trails. They look a lot cleaner, though and
if I could get past that complaint would probably switch over.

2013-04-29 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I agree...cadence was interesting for a bit, but once I discovered that my
cadence is pretty consistent I didn't care when I broke the bit that
measured it by accident. Indeed I've now managed to lose the entire Garmin
gps unit (a few years old and not used much anyway but still).

I use the cheapest available wired units now because I'm only interested in
my time on the bike and sometimes my distance. I keep track of my time on
the bike as we have a goal at work having to do with fitness and
essentially everyone is encouraged to 'exercise' two hours a week. By that
standard I finished the entire year before the end of April and yes, I'm
aware that bicycling doesn't constitute the only sort of exercise one can
do - but it is easy to track. :-)

Bob

[RBW] Re: Question for modern geometry race bike only riders who later went to Rivendells.

2013-04-29 Thread dougP
Michael:

What may be happening is your body protesting a change that may not appear
to be too radical but is a major change anyway.

Assuming you had no pain problems on your old race bike set-up, I suggest
taking one of your Rivendells and replicating that same set-up as closely
as possible. That's your baseline and what your body is used to. You
mention wanting to be a bit more upright. Once you are back to where you
started, gradually raise the bars, perhaps only 1/8 or so at a time. It's
amazing how our bodies protest radical changes, so take your time on this
one.

As to aging, I started gradually raising my bars somewhere in my 40s. I
finally ended up with a MTB stem on my last race bike, with the bars about
even with the seat. That process took a few years. When I got my
Atlantis, I just set it up about like my old bike and have only made a few
minor adjustments in the last 10 years.

*I am wondering if you had any trouble adapting from race geometry fit
bikes you were used to riding, to the more upright-like rivendell bikes and
 how you got through it.*

Re: [RBW] Re: ISO Small handle bar bag

2013-04-29 Thread Geoff Klingsporn
Grant wrote the following to the RBW list on 1/17/06 -- caveat: I haven't
followed things since, relations may have changed, I have no affiliation
with either side, etc.:

Responding to the bike bags in the Frost River catalogue, the story is
this;

The fellow at Frost River broke an agreement we had that he wouldn't make
our bags under any other label. It wasn't a written agreement. He wears
plaid shirts and tucks them in behind thick leather belts, and we hit it off
right away when we met 7+ years ago when he was at Duluth Pack.

As for the Frost River bags: We conceived and developed them, they stitched
them. We were always undersuppplied and back-ordered because he was
suffering financially to the point where he couldn't even buy materials for
our bags because he had vendors who needed paying and he couldn't pay them,
and they wouldn't ship more materials without being paid. We loaned him
money to pay his bills, and still he couldn't deliver.

I followed him from Duluth Pack to this new company out of loyalty (after
he'd been let go). I nearly burned my bridge with Duluth doing it, and it
backfired when he couldn't deliver.

So we were forced to crawl back to Duluth, tail between legs and begging
forgiveness, and they graciously accepted us back.

All the while I told FR that we'd continue to buy from them, as much as they
could make. But we couldn't continue being out of stock, so the move back to
Duluth was necessary.

He still couldn't deliver, and then his catalogue showed up with our bags in
it, renamed.

I called him up and said Whazzupidat? and he said I forced him to do it
by going to Duluth. I said, Well, you know, you weren't making us bags! He
said, exact quote, Well Grant, you made a business decision, and so did I.

Even after that I told him, Look, we'll BUY from you, if you can deliver.
And I'll come up with new bags for you to make, if it turns out that Duluth
is coming through with tons of the current bags.

He is a good guy, a nice man, but this was not a good thing that he did. It
doesn't make him bad, but I feel as though I can keep turning another cheek
and he'll keep hitting it (by continuing to list OUR bags).

I hope he doesn't sell many of them. He claims to have played a role in
their development, but he never contributed a single design idea, only
construction details that any maker would be expected to contribute.

That's the story, o'er out.

Best,

Grant

Re: [RBW] Re: Urban Tour by Brooklyn's Horse Cycles

2013-04-29 Thread Curtis Schmitt
I owned a Romulus for about a year. Nice bike, but I didn't fall in love
with it as I had hoped to as I did with my ultra-stiff but still comfy
Seven Alaris, my Peter Mooney single speed (set up fixed), and my EAI
Bareknuckle. I eventually sold the Romulus. I borrowed the Urban Tour
prototype (depicted in the promotional photos and videos) this past
weekend. The ride quality is much better than the Romulus, and I think the
Urban Tour is more beautiful. I found the Romulus frame to be way too
flexible, loaded or not. It was lovely when riding it in a very civilized
and proper manner, but ultimately didn't excel at anything. The Urban Tour
is an incredible ride. It just feels special in a way that so many other
bikes don't.

As for the $2K being affordable, I don't think it is. I agree it's pretty
expensive. But I think it's a better value than a Rivendell right now, and
if you do value the fact that it's made in the U.S., even better.

[RBW] Sugino Triple Cranks on Sam H.

Hi all. I am planning on installing a Sugino XD2 triple crankset that Riv sells

spindle that I have will work for this application. I went looking for the XD2
bb size on Sheldon Brown, but it wasn't listed. There are XD600, 500 and 300
but no XD2. Is the XD2 the same as one of those? For those cranks lists larger
spindle lengths but then says that 107mm will work in some situations. I could
have sworn that somewhere on the Riv site it says that 110mm bb is the right
size. But I can't find that now. Can anyone set me straight? Thanks.

You should be good baring any issues with the front der. 107 or 110 work

[RBW] Re: Question for modern geometry race bike only riders who later went to Rivendells.

2013-04-29 Thread Michael

Thanks for the ideas and experiences, everyone.
Starting to feel like I am not losing my mind now.

I rode last year with varying heights all above the saddle on the Bleriot.
Pain started after a month of this.

I will try replicating the race set up with a 6cm Technomic I have to get
the reach the same (Sam reach is too long for me even with 8cm stock stem).
I may need a 190mm tall stem though to get the bars 1.5cm below saddle
height. The Tallux bottoms out in the Sam steerer tube before that. Don't
know about the technomic yet.

I want to try Albas to try sitting bolt upright, too. But that is a $200
experiment (bars/stem/brake levers) and I want to exhaust all the options I
have with the Noodles and staches I have before buying something else.

I know I must sound like it, but I am not a fussy customer, I rode for
years on the race bike without a problem. Just can't figure this out. Just
wanna settle into some nice riding now.

[RBW] Crank Length Question

2013-04-29 Thread Peter M
So I have been putting more and more miles on the Bombadil and its an
awesome ride but I am having an issue riding in Brooklyn traffic. I keep
having to put my foot down at lights and don't want to dismount the saddle
every time since the 56cm size has the TT right there. Would going to
180mm cranks let me drop the saddle a bit and therefore be able to put my
foot a bit lower or am I just crazy? Ideally I would have something like a
Gomez but with the tubes and clearance that the Bombadil does. So outside
of saving my pennies for a custom I was thinking this would be some sort of
a solution, I know it wont be much but even being able to put my foot down

I loved the book. It is a great resource to have for cyclists.

I wish Riv would make a Just wrench book next. I like Grant's down to
 earth mechanics approach.

I took the part of the book dedicated to fitness and diet with a grain of
 salt though.

There are so many diet/exercise philosophies and studies out there in the
world that one cannot tell what works at all, or for one's self.
My philosophy on dieting and exercise ideas is this:
If they woulda found something that worked by now, everyone on the planet
would be skinny.

Even better than original issue Turbos, which are a bit too rounded. Of all

[RBW] Crank Length Question

If stand over is that much of an issue, I suggest a smaller frame rather than
longer cranks. Long cranks may open up a rabbit hole of knee/hip issues. Maybe

I just love the ride so much though, its only when I have to stop riding is
the issue. I have a fist and a half of seatpost showing so its not like it
sooo big. I would really need to replicate its long top tube but with less
standover, which again would be near impossible without coughing up custom
money.

it may be of interest. There's a really fun loop from around the Paso
Robles airport area, north to Hog Canyon (much nicer than it sounds)
looping around to San Miguel, crossing 101 into the hills above Paso, then
back into town. Lots of great riding up there, one of my favorite riding

If you've got the saddle at the right height, unless you are riding one
of those 'crank forward' designs you are going to have to dismount when
you come to a stop. There's no way you're going to put a foot on the
