Re: [RBW] Sugino Triple Cranks on Sam H.
The LBS who built mine insisted on 113 (Shimano) as specified by Sugino for the XD600 triple I used. Chain line and Q work fine for me. I'm pretty sure 110 would be fine too. Re: [RBW] Sugino Triple Cranks on Sam H.
My Bombadil had a 107 with a Sugino triple - it cleared the stays. With Shimano BBs I believe the difference between a 107 and a 110 is on the non-drive side. Not sure if that holds true for Tange as well. When I rebuilt the bike I swapped in a new Shimano Mtn triple front derailleur and had to use a Shimano 113 as the derailleur could not adjust inward enough to hit the granny on the triple. Worked fine with the 113. Dan -Marin On Jun 24, 2013, at 9:46 PM, Aaron Young 1ce...@gmail.com wrote: So 107 would work as well? [RBW] Albastache bars mounted on my Atlantis.
New Abastaches on my Atlantis. I haven't been able to ride yet due to rain, but they feel good with the leaning on the refrigerator with your knee and sitting in the saddle technique. The bar wrap is Brooks leather tape over grab-on foam grips that extend up to the levers. The tape was exactly the right length. Hopefully the bars and foam will ease my carpal tunnel symptoms. The bars address the old problems. Closer, flatter, higher. My one wish is that they were rounder where they return to the stem. Brooks tape is the bomb. I have wrapped and rewrapped at least 20 times with the same tape on various bars. The tape is getting a little ratty, but I have come to believe that leather tape is the most cost effective tape out there, it you experiment with different bar set ups. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-wP4llY7FHZ0/UcmoTpWSfdI/ABk/OzTsBEgnUrA/s1600/IMG_0544.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-j4yx4PByhCo/UcmoLj6pFII/ABc/eVRaICl7Pfw/s1600/IMG_0543.jpg -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Pics of my Sam with drops, staches, then Albas
@Michael: Thanks for asking. I feel like a freak because I see all these Rivbike owners with long stem extensions and here I am on 6 and 7cm stems. Something wrong with me? Ha ha. *The short story:* Pain and comfortable reach dictated stem length. *The long story:* Even though I PBH'ed in at the 52 frame Noodle Sam size, I knew the TT was gonna be a pretty long reach for me and asked for an 8cm stem instead of the stock 9 or 10 that comes with the RBW drop build. But 8cm Tallux was still too long. Even after a short ride I would get pain in the left side of my neck and numbness down my left arm that would last for days after. I was off the bike more than on that first month I had it because of the pain. I was seriously bummed. So I got a 6cm stem to try with the drops to shorten up the reach. But first I tried Moustaches with it as I knew that was an even shorter reach bar than Noodles (it is. despite the myths). Staches were great. No neck pain. But killed my hands. With staches, no matter where you place your hands, the outside edges of your paws are in constant contact with the bars. At saddle height, after a month I couldn't take the hand pain and numbness anymore, so I figured that Albas were the next thing to try. I think I read that RBW recommends 10-12 stem for Albas (or 2cm longer than whatever you use with your drops, I think), so I automatically felt I should go 2 cm shorter than their shortest recommendation. They must have some long arms in Walnut Creek. I went back to the stock 8cm Tallux and raised the bars to max height. So far so good. Hope it works out great. Nothing seems to hurt. I like riding totally upright. Very relaxing. Reach feels great since that issue is totally nullified by the swept back bars. It is weird that I can ride in comfort on my drop bar Giant Defy bike, but have had a very hard time getting comfy on my drop Bleriot and Sam. I can't believe that my body can only tolerate such a small drop bar fit window like I have on my Giant bike (45cm reach to tops, 71cm seat height, KOPS, bars ~1.5cm below saddle height). One day if I try the Noodles again with the new 6cm stem, I might try setting the Sam up just like the Defy and see if that works. I feel like my body is rejecting the Rivbike transplant. It likes the Defy. I don't get it. I really wanted these Rivs to work. The Rivs handle waaay better, and I can use wide tires and fenders with them. All steel too, so no worries about forks snapping. So I hope they work out. Or I just spent the last year and alotta money on a failed experiment. Re: [RBW] Re: Pics of my Sam with drops, staches, then Albas
Michael, the bike is beautiful. It's a shame that it's not comfortable for you. It looks like you're doing everything you can, and putting a lot of money into trying to work it out. I think you possibly nailed it when you said the TT was too long though. Just looking at those pics, it appears stretched out from where you have your seat and bars. You have your seat pretty far forward in all the pics, as well as the shortest stems available. The thing is, if the frame just doesn't fit, it doesn't fit. What's the length of the TT on your Defy? The 57.5cm of the homer looks pretty long considering your saddle height pictured. If the A-bars don't work out, maybe you can see if anyone has a smaller 48cm frame they would want to trade your 52cm for. The 3cm shorter TT may put your position back in the zone you need for comfort. Hope you can work this out, as it is indeed beautiful! Re: [RBW] Re: Pics of my Sam with drops, staches, then Albas
David is right -- the tt seems to be too long if you want to have your bar below saddle. Grant designed the Sam for high bars; I had to raise the bar considerably above saddle height in order to get a comfortable reach, and that made the handling feel off. Even on my Fargo the bar is only 1 above saddle. You can try raising the bar considerably, which will eventually bring a drop back far enough to make the reach comfortable; this is Grant's basic premise in his article (forget title) poo-pooing concern with top tube length. But this leaves open the question of bar height and it does not work if you want your bar lower than required for comfortable reach. Another suggestion: use a narrower bar: narrower = less reach to the usual grip points. On Tue, Jun 25, 2013 at 9:01 AM, cyclotourist cyclotour...@gmail.comwrote: Michael, the bike is beautiful. @David, The Giant TT is 53cm c-c. My 52 Sam is 55.8cm with a c-c 6 degree slope. 55 Bleriot is 55.5 c-c. with a 2 degree slope, I think. One day I'll try the Bleriot and the Sam set up just like the Giant with drops and see if that works. I wanna do that now with the Bleriot but need to find a NITTO Technomic Deluxe 6 or 7cm extension 190mmrise quill stem for it. [RBW] Re: Pics of my Sam with drops, staches, then Albas
@ Patrick: I have tried what you mention with raising the bars with drops and staches on the Bleriot and Sam and those angles give me low back pain for days. I have found that I have to be at or below saddle height to be comfortable with drop bars. Though if it is a too long reach like the Sam I apparently get the neck and arm stuff, which is why I have to try a 6cm stem on the Sam now for drops. The 8cm Tallux is just too long. However, the Albas totally eliminate the neck issue because the reach is so far back. And, sitting bolt upright, my back seems to be ok with it so far. Only time will tell. So it looks like, I gotta be at or below saddle height, or all the way upright on a bike. I cannot do the in between levels like with raised drops and staches. Albas let you get all the way upright. But drops and staches on a 225 Technomic won't. So I gotta get low and stay low with them. I originally wanted to get a Rivbike for a few reasons: 1. The possibility of Technomically higher drop bars - but turns out my back doesn't like it. 2. Wider tire-ability - check. 3. Fenderability - check. 4. Safety and dependability of steel over carbon - check. So I guess 3 outta 4 ain't bad. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I use the XD2 with a 110 and a 107. With the XD2, the 107 gives symmetric arms from the stays. With the 110, the *3mm are all of the non drive side*. It makes no real world difference in riding to me, but if one is a perfectionist, it would bother them. I'm surprised Riv is suggesting a 110 when the 107 gives symmetric arms. It's that extra 2.8cm that's doing it. I think you need a smaller frame if you want drops. Re: [RBW] Re: Pics of my Sam with drops, staches, then Albas
I have a stem with an adjustable angle. Between quill height and angle, I can put the bars pretty much anywhere. Yes, it's uglier than a Nitto. But very versatile. I'm still dialing in the perfect combo on my Rivendell road. Once I get it figured out, I can buy a fixed stem with that reach/angle. Perhaps you should try an adjustable stem before you give up? They're ~$30 online, and my LBS's actually carry them. Cheers, Tim On Tue, Jun 25, 2013 at 12:21 PM, cyclotourist cyclotour...@gmail.comwrote: It's that extra 2.8cm that's doing it. Very nice All-rounder! I have custom (Curt-built) A/R as well (26 wheels, though) and am pleased as punch with it. How exciting to have a future old friend and traveling companion! I was just looking at my records and I ordered it in January of '03 and it was delivered at the end of July '04. It seemed like an eternity and I probably purchased parts for three complete bikes in that time... (Wow, I can't believe it's been that long. I guess I have to start planning a 10 year anniversary tour for next summer!) One thing I notice about your bike is that it has the diamond shaped old style decal on the seat tube rather than the more recent wrapped all the way around rectangle. Was this an option? Are they moving back to the older style? Just curious. I was always fond of the older diamond style and it's nice to see a new bike with that style. Enjoy the ride and thanks for sharing! [RBW] Re: New rig and Sunday afternoon ride
I should add that my experience ordering my off the rack Hunqapillar, Grant et al went well above and beyond to help me buy my first bike in 20 years. It's a disconcerting choice to spend that much on a bike when I wasn't sure (due to vertigo) if I would be able to ride it any farther than the free donated Schwinn (3 miles) or the Riv'd too-small Trek MTB (8 miles), yet I somehow felt in confident hands that would not steer me wrong. They worked with me on figuring out barefoot pedals and who knows how many other returning neophyte questions. The good news is, my bike lives up to it's name of Shadowfax, being a steed that makes sure it's rider is always on. I've since pummeled them with endless questions about bags and racks and whatnot and they handle them all wonderfully. If you are on the fence about going to Rivendell for a custom (or any bike), I advise going for it. Let's just say they go way, WAY above and beyond to help you find what you are looking for. Anyway I got it this past week and am blown away, I could not be more psyched on this thing. I built it up in an craze of excitement and have been riding it more or less nonstop, it's a blast. Here are some pictures from the local woods this past Sunday afternoon. The bike rides fantastically, comfortable and natural feeling. Buying a bike in a shop doesn't help much. The stock handlebar height is often too low and you can't experiment with bars. Some shops will flip a stem or adjust spacers but most won't swap stems just for a test ride. Trying to judge ride quality without a dialed in fit may or may not be informative, as weight distribution does effect the handling of the bike. -Dave On Tuesday, June 25, 2013 8:20:28 PM UTC-4, Michael wrote: This is the only bad part about buying bikes online. [RBW] Re: Pics of my Sam with drops, staches, then Albas
I'm always surprised by the long stem crowd as well. I have long arms and long torso but I still run 7cm and 8cm stem extension on my several drop bar bikes with the bar at or slightly above the saddle. I have found that raising the stem one cm makes much more difference to providing an upright body position than shortening the extension by 1cm, but I've never tried the raising the stem an inch at the same time as adding inch longer extension to see how that feels. I find the Riv sugested sizing too big for my preferences. My saddle height is 72.5cm. I traded out my recommended 58cm Ram for a 56cm ages ago and wish my 56cm Atlantis and 57cm Bleriot were all the next size down. Those bikes have top tubes in the 57cm range and for drops I like a 56cm top tube and think I'd like a 55cm even better. I hear for Alba or Bosco bars you can go with a much longer top tube / stem combo and I think part of the Riv sizing is to try to design a bike that will work for both types of bars within the constraints of available stem extensions. -Dave J King George, VA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Pics of my Sam with drops, staches, then Albas
The Nitto stem can be modified quite easily simply machine or saw it to the same angle and shorten the through bolt but..Nitto sells shorter stems for when you don't want to jack the bars toward heaven. As far as the 2.8 cm difference in top tubes you might want to experiment with using a shorter reach drop bar (the noodle is a longer reach drop bar) in combination with a shorter and lower stem. I don't think you need a smaller frame. If you can get within 1 cm of your most comfortable bike your body and hand position should be able to adapt. You might also look at using a narrower drop bar (which will essentially lengthen your arms) like the excellent Nitto Rando bar (36cm wide at the hoods) I use this bar and also a 41cm Noodle on another bike and it works fine. On Tuesday, June 25, 2013 7:44:27 AM UTC-7, Michael wrote: @Michael: Thanks for asking. Sigh. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
