[RBW] Re: Neck Pain, and Upright Bars/Bosco's

2013-07-11 Thread sean
Apologies for my late arrival to this topic. I have just been dealing with
similar issues (stinosis in the C6-7) and have been off the bike for a few
weeks. Still in physical therapy and just starting to ride again in a
limited fashion while being ever so mindful of my position and posture on
the bike. I never in a million years thought I would be considering the
Bosco bars. But now I am interested. Being as upright as possible is
certainly taking the pressure off the nerves and, aside from moving to a
recumbent (gasp!), upright riding might be the position for me for the long
haul. Especially if it can keep me riding for many years to come! (Being
off the bike for 3 weeks has been tough!) Currently run an albatross bar on
my Big Dummy and may have to shorten the stem to pull it back even further.
My LHT currently has On-One Mary which I love (have mutliple sets) but
might need to retire these in favor of a Bosco. The Marys still put me a
little too far forward for comfort and for the foreseeable future
maintenance of this condition. Maybe the Boscos will do the trick? Or a
shorter stem with some Albas. Thanks for posting this and I hope you post a
long term report. Will most likely have some Noodles, Midges, Mary bars,
and others to move on to new owners in the near future.

Best,
Sean

The mitten clearance: if my hands are in position just forward of the

close to the bar between the first and second bend. Not a problem with bare
hands but with thick mittens you've gotta kind of work to slot them in
between the cable and bar. Not a big deal and strictly a winter issue.

On sprung seats: have considered it but nothing more. I'm using a men's
B17 with a Paul seatpost, so I can make fine adjustments to tilt.

Good to hear stories of upright bars bringing joy back to stiff-necks like
 us!

Again, the wideness of the 58's feeling great is a surprise given my
 stature.

Re: [RBW] Chris King Headset

2013-07-11 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I agree that CK headsets are an extravagance. You can certainly get a
functional, durable headset for much less money. But let's face it, this is
a forum for fans of a bicycle company that sells frames that cost a minimum
of $1200 and complete bikes that could easily hit $5k. There are much less
costly frames and bikes thats serve the same function, right? In that
light, an extra $100 or so for an extravagant headset is just the tip of
the iceberg.

[RBW] Re: Getting a Bike on a Plane

2013-07-11 Thread Lynne Fitz
I've flown with my SS coupled Riv (and Sweetpea) many times. Knock on
wood, but they've never opened the case. Maybe this summer. Once they get
it through their heads that my case is 1) within size limits and 2) within
weight limits, (and believe me, I have had to clarify those points for them
many times), it isn't an issue.

Although my husband did need to use the bike parts line at one check in.

I'll be flying on Friday with my folding bike, and I wonder if anyone has
tips for dealing with the clerk at the airline counter. My bike (a folding

it's a few inches too large and qualifies for the large surcharge. That,
plus the fact that there's a bike inside, sometimes results in a $50 charge
 on my airline (Southwest).

Any ideas on how to get this thing on the plane without causing the ticket
agent to haul out the tape measure?

If I'm asked what's inside, what should I say (it has been suggested that
I answer, sporting goods, or a mobility device ... even an inline
wheelchair)? Anyone who flies knows that a bike incurs a cost, the same
bag filled with golf clubs or lacrosse equipment wouldn't.

 Thanks in advance!

[RBW] No ruse shoes (or, no retention, NYT Style section

2013-07-11 Thread Patrick Moore
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/11/fashion/looking-smart-on-the-pedals.html?_r=0

Personally, from my own experience, the ideal worry free shoe-and-pedal
system is loose-ish toe straps and boat shoes in summer, Safari boots in
winter. Both have soles that grip standard track or quill pedals, and with
the clips/straps you can fine tune the entry ease.

But, for me, riding fixed, clipless systems help me torque up climbs and
keep my foot still when spinning very fast.

Odd, I found it easy to get into, and to get out of, clips and straps with
fixed drivetrains, even using slotted cleats, and I find getting the second
foot into single sided SPD and Look pedals noticeably harder. I think it's
over anticipating with the second (right) clip in foot.

Re: [RBW] Re: Terrible News

2013-07-11 Thread Jack Warman
Friends,

Some more info about the goings-on here and online.

First, the service for Seth is this Saturday at 11a ET at Clements Funeral
Home 1105 Broad St., Durham, NC. You can leave remembrances for Seth on
Clements site:

http://www.clementsfuneralservice.com/memsol.cgi?user_id=1032792

Seth's partner, Eunice, told me the remembrances are helping, so I
encourage all of you to share the kind words you've posted here with his
family through Clements' site. In addition to their being able to see them
now during this difficult time, they will also be able to view them later
when they have left Durham for home.

Also, I told Eunice that many of you wanted to be in touch, and she gave
the thumbs up for sharing their physical address. Honestly, you could get
it on your own via the Google machine, but please know that she's
comfortable hearing from any of you who are interested in sending a
postcard or other sort of note.

Ms. Eunice Chang
2309 Woodrow St
Durham , NC 27705

A local shop that Seth frequented has a monthly ride that he and Eunice
often joined, and as the ride is the second Sunday of the month, it happens
to hit this weekend and is in Seth's honor. Looks to be much bigger than
normal this month. Come if you can.

https://www.facebook.com/events/295397680605055/

And, the Fedora Project website has a nice Seth tribute up on their
homepage:

http://fedoraproject.org/

Thanks again for all the kind words about Seth, and the great vibes sent my
direction as well. It's been a difficult week, but its been buffered
substantially by the tremendous outpouring of love that have been shown to
Seth's family and friends from all of the many communities in which he was
active.

Best
Jack

I measure 88mm from the MAX HT line to the tops of the diagonal stems. 68mm

The main bar is a constant 22.2mm all the way across, so Riv's interrupter

Re: [RBW] Re: Bullmoose Boscos Miniumum Insertion

2013-07-11 Thread John Stowe
Ah, that would have been good to provide also. Mine have 7 of clamp-able
space between the welds.

John, thanks for the measurements, I appreciate it. I personally love to

using some bar tape as shims now with the regular bosco bars and
interrupter levers. I just don't know if there is enough real estate with
the struts there to fit the levers. Contemplation time

I measure 88mm from the MAX HT line to the tops of the diagonal stems.
68mm of usable range overall (from the line to slammed down, as the
racers would say). If it were a regular quill stem it would measure as a 90
 degree bend, 12cm extension.

The main bar is a constant 22.2mm all the way across, so Riv's
interrupter levers, with 24mm clamps, wouldn't work without some sort of
shim. Stems are 19.2mm, if anyone cares.

Erm yeah that might come in handy if I owned a set or could find some

 work with the Bullmoose version.

Do you mean MAX bar height? (which I guess is the inverse for minimum

Maximum bar height is dictated by what is marked on the stem itself
by Nitto. Is it marked towards the bottom of the back of the stem?
You might see it etched in there saying something like MAX HT or
something with some hash marks above it.

Re: [RBW] First ride with the Noodles

2013-07-11 Thread Curtis McKenzie
Patrick,

So far I like the noodles. They feel good in the hands. Also did the first
attempt at bar tape and shellack. I tried different types on each side so
the left and right are a little different.

Ride safe.

[RBW] Re: First ride with the Noodles

2013-07-11 Thread dougP
The Noodles are probably more user friendly than flickr :-). As a user of
both, just my opinion. I think I can tape handlebars faster with more
confidence than downloading posting photos, but that's my problem.

Seriously, nice photos. Looks like you had a fun ride.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell sighting what are the odds?

2013-07-11 Thread Tom Virgil
Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Tom Virgil and a Samuel
Hillborne rider. The new Rivendell bike entered my life in late May 2013.
I am still dialing the Sam in. I live in Del Mar Heights, but often ride
out to the beach on Carmel Valley Road. You just might see another
Rivendell out there; it's me. I would be delighted to see one other than
my own. I am extremely pleased with my bike, but exercising some patience
through the honeymoon before posting pros and cons. I had great
technical and sales support from Jared at Rivendell. You can see my bike
here http://www.flickr.com/photos/20853610@N05/sets/72157633958654979/.

Best regards,

 Pictures prove that it happened.

[RBW] Emergency Shoutout to All Seattle List Members

2013-07-11 Thread Eric Norris
I'll be arriving in Seattle tomorrow evening for the Seattle-to-Portland ride,
and as of tonight my lodging arrangements seem to be falling apart. If anybody
on this list is in the Seattle area--preferably reasonably close to UW--and has
a bed, couch, or cot that I could sleep on, I would very much appreciate it.

If you have anything to offer, please feel free to call me tomorrow at
530-574-4875. I'll be on a plane between 8 and 10, but should be available
otherwise.

Thanks in advance!
