[RBW] Re: Small Saddlesack for Carrying a Laptop?
I have a basket on an M12, which is fantastic, but if I wanted to carry a laptop, I'd probably hang a saddlebag off the handlebars. I do put my iPad in a saddlebag-on-the-bars, but also in a Grab Sack in the basket. I have tallish (60cm) bikes, so there's lots of room to suspend a bag without it hitting a rack or fender. The other answer for sluggish steering on a porteur setup is to re-rake the fork, but I only know about that through the internet. Philip www.biketinker.com On Thursday, September 26, 2013 4:05:00 PM UTC-7, jar351 wrote: Hmm. I'm thinking that even if the laptop's in a protective sleeve, repeated bumping is still a bad thing. I thought that if the strap attaching the saddlesack to the seatpost were tight enough, there'd be no bumping, but it seems I was wrong, eh? Now that I look more closely at the photos on the Riv site, it does seem as if that strap is too high on the bag to keep anything in the very bottom from swinging back and forth a little. I might be with CoconutBill here in thinking that a pannier is perhaps a more stable place for a laptop. It's just that that would require me to get a rear rack *as well as* a pannier. I'm trying to keep costs reasonable here. I'm also starting to wonder whether an M-12 rack + basket might be a good option. It'll be similar to the porteur rack setup but with two possibly significant differences: 1) it'll be a little lighter than the porteur rack, and 2) it'll bring the load back a little toward the headtube. I believe that both of these differences are good in terms of steering quality, no? Lastly, it occurred to me that some of the unwieldiness might be due to the shape of the stem on the bike (a high-rise, dirt drop model). Maybe switching out the stem for a Technomic would help things in that regard? I'm lucky enough to have a 100mm one lying around. Andre On Thursday, September 26, 2013 8:23:16 AM UTC-7, Dave wrote: I've carried a 13 macbook air in a small saddlesack and it works out provided you've got a nice protective sleeve around the laptop. Depending on your bike's geometry and saddle position it can repeatedly bump against the seatpost or the top lip of a rear rack. Space wise however it's fantastic as it just lies flat against the plastic coroplast at the bottom and leaves plenty of space for clothes, food, random things On Wednesday, September 25, 2013 4:52:52 PM UTC-7, Coconutbill wrote: If I am carrying the laptop up front, it's on my platrack (in the slickersack), and it feels OK, but maybe it would feel sluggish just like her porteur rack set-up. Only yesterday did I realize that the inner sleeve of my Carsick panniers can fit a 13' macbook . It feels much better to me having the macbook's weight lower and in the back. -Evan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Even the paved roads are nice. The scenery was gorgeous, and the leaves had begun to change already, especially north of White River Junction. The small towns and nice people in Vermont are the best. The bike handled perfectly, and the only thing that rattled loose was my mudflap(!) toward the end of the trip on a particularly bumpy section. You may notice I only have one water bottle, but that's because I prefer dromedary bags for carrying most of my water- the bottle is just a more convenient vessel to drink from :) This was my first fully loaded ride using moustache bars and the Nitto Large back rack, which I bought from Riv a while ago-I had been using a Tubus Cargo prior to this.I found the M-bars to be fantastic for all-day riding. I had used them before for ~2 hour rides on my QB and reckoned they'd be good for touring, but have always just stuck with Noodles since I know they work well for me. This ride convinced me that M-bars give plenty of hand positions for comfort and work well on bumpy terrain when riding somewhat heavily loaded. You do need a short stem with M-bars though. My only (minor) complaint about the Nitto rack is that platform is much too far back behind the rear axle, and it is difficult to get weight far enough forward with it due to the tombstone being so far back.Sliding the mounting points forward at the top results in the rack tilting forward at an odd angle. This is strange to me since I ride relatively large frames, and most racks (especially non-adjustable ones) end up tilting backward because of the steep angle of my seat-stays. The Nitto seems more geared toward frames with ultra-short chainstays, or super-tall frames. BUT it is still a ridiculously nice rack though, and I have like 5 inches of heel clearance with it (size 10's) so if you have large feet/ heel clearance issues with your rack it would be a good option.I may go back to the Tubus for future loaded riding, as it seems ideally suited to frames in my size in terms of where the platform is located.I also really like an R14 with the large saddlesack when not riding with panniers. Anyway hope you enjoy the photos. Matt -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Barefoot Friendly Pedals
The VP Vice were waiting patiently for me when I got back yesterday from a S30O (I'll post pics later). Removing all the pins was a job that gave me my manual dexterity therapy for a year. That's a lot of un-screwing around I had to do! Rode them my short ride up to the falls (3 miles round trip, hefty climb/descent mostly on paved roads). Wow. They feel really good as is without adding any leather. I may need to file down some edges a a wee bit if that reveals itself a problem on longer rides or with more extreme climbing, but I may have found a barefoot friendly pedal that doesn't need altering. After getting them, I also realized there is more support for the outside of the foot vs. 001s because the axel runs all the way through. Patrick, I'm sure that many people in NM are happy for the sacrifices you are willing to make. I for one am in awe of your generosity and perseverance. I'll be there. Only thing that could stand in my way is the reliability of my '93 240. That's two-four-zero as in Volvo, not the camping o variety. Bringing the Protovelo! You will be dropped by me and my camping bike. Kids are sick and I had a weird work week - who cares!?
