Thanks for that. Looks like the Bombadil is now around $3500 according to
the RBW site, so the price of the Appaloosa makes sense.

(Unfortunately, it's likely made the prospect of owning one go from want

[RBW] Re: Brooks Leather Bar Tape

2013-10-18 Thread Deacon Patrick
Peter, I did cork grips with cotton wrap starting above them and it looked
great. After a year of abuse, the cork were showing wear, so I wrapped them
with tape too, which looks fine to me but others might think odd. Kind of
describes me anyroad, so we look like we belong together. Grin.

With abandon,

[RBW] Ride/Camping Report: Willamette Mission State Park, 15-16 October

2013-10-18 Thread Shawn Granton
Friends-

It's been a great October in Cascadia: lots of sun, temps in the 60s (F).
It's almost like Mother Nature flip-flopped September and October. I'm
trying to take advantage of this nice weather and get in some overnight
bike camping trips before it gets too cold and dark, especially since I had
no motivation to camp in September. This week I rode from Hillsboro (west
side Portland suburb) to Willamette Mission and back. A great trip overall.

Yeah, I agree Peter M. I am all over that bike if and when it goes into

well with those. I would set it up as a cruiser with some freaky high bars

nerve racking. I will post photos when it arrives and after I modify it
slightly with parts I have on hand. It comes with drop bars and silver bar

I'm selling the Olive handlebar bag since I use that the least. I am holding
onto the saddlebag and toolbag for now because I need them, but as soon as
Acorn makes another Tan batch I'm buying those versions and will sell off
 the remaining Olive goodies here.

 Asking $200 shipped to CONUS

Tubus Logo Evo—hard to see in the photo with Brooks panniers mounted to it
but I purchased it new, it only has 100 miles on it. Includes all mounting
hardware. I've decided black racks do not look good on this bike, so I'm
going to do some VO polished racks instead.

 Asking $100 shipped to CONUS

Salsa Down Under Front Rack—this is the split style rack. I didn't even
mount it, brand new (so therefore it's not shown in photo). I'm going with a
 larger silver front rack instead.

 Asking $50 shipped to CONUS

 Buy everything for $300 shipped.

Great ride report. A friend and I rode from Southern Oregon to the SF

we got that September rain you talked about. So glad you were able to
find some late fall sunshine for your trip.

Even in the summer, I often find that campgrounds are empty mid-week.
Empty campgrounds can be a nice luxury.

[RBW] Ride Report, unusual, but no Riv content

2013-10-18 Thread Michael Hechmer
Thought I'd report on my Trek's first ride across country.

It took about an hour and half for me to disassemble the bike and pack it
into the case. A couple of false moves and redo's so I'm hoping the next
try will be closer to 45 minutes. Plus I took off the brakes, which I
think is unnecessary, and will try tying them together between the fork
blades and seat stays. The handle bars are the tricky part and only when I
got that right could I get the front wheel in and the lid closed. Then I
started stuffing shoes and clothes in to all the crevices.

Put the whole thing on my random number generator which masquerades as a
bathroom scale and guessed I was about 51-52 lbs. Took out a few tools,
about three lbs worth and put them in my clothes suitcase. When I got to
the airport it weighed in at 49.5, phew. I meant to put my cell phone
number and an offer to help the TSA if it needed to be repacked, but
forgot. Sure enough the TSA had disturbed everything and dislodged the
compression stops. But as far as I can tell the only harm was grease on
my brand new HB tape and a small scratch on the stem.

Got the bike together and rode in Grizzly Park out the Canyon rode and
Nimitz trail. And since much of the pavement looked as if it had been
imported from VT, I felt very happy for the 38mm Pacentis.

I'll be in El Cerrito till the 27th and am thinking about testing
Shipbikes.com for the return trip to Vt.

Michael

[RBW] Re: Brooks Leather Bar Tape

2013-10-18 Thread jtallman
Peter,

When I replaced the Nitto Noodles on my Hunqapillar with the Bosco bars I
just moved the Brooks tape from the noodles to the bosco. I double wrapped
the rearward grips and single wrapped the rest. I like the way it feels
and looks.

limited with how much cush you can put below it and still get it sewn on
looking right. Can I use the Cork grips in the grip section and leather
bar wrap on the rest without it looking too over the top? Everyone's

2013-10-18 Thread sameness
Keven's http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/staff3.htm is set up the same
way, so my guess is there's either some issue with the placement of the
cable stops or the routing that precludes the effective use of a brake
hanger... or you're just buying the remainders of Keven's mismatched pair.

RBW can put a curve on a fork like nobody's business. That's a pretty fork
 there.

That fork is so pretty that you might as well ditch your heirloom flatwear
and just use chopsticks from now on.

That bike is screaming for a cream headtube and windows, too.
