Re: [RBW] Minimum acceptable ground clearance below crankarm?

2013-11-16 Thread Bruce Herbitter
Not sure I understand your question. You usually talk in terms of BB
height. You mean from pedal to floor with crank arm at 6:00 position? My
650B conversion of an early Road has 2 7/8 under the pedal measured this
way. I can't recall a pedal strike in over 5,000 miles, but there may have
been one or two. I don't corner like a racer, however. The bike has had
Pari Motos, Maxy Fasty and Cypres tires

On Wed, Nov 13, 2013 at 11:15 AM, Jim Bronson jim.bron...@gmail.com wrote:

Is there any rule of thumb on this? Put the 650b wheels on my custom Riv
with 32.8mm Nifty Swifty tires and there is less than 3 inches of clearance
from the crankarm to the floor.

 I think it's ridable...if I never pedal through corners. I'm just afraid
it's going to bite me sometime when I'm tired and not thinking about it.

I suppose bigger tires and shorter crankarms would help some. There is a
huge amount of clearance available underneath the R559 brakes I installed.
And I'm running 180s now so could go down to 175s or even 170s. Might be
able to get another 15mm of clearance or so with 170s and 40mm tires.

 But anyway :)

[RBW] new knickers

2013-11-16 Thread Ron Mc
Got my catalog, too, and my favorite heading is *Grab liquefied and
resolidified bug mausoleums*. The knickers - I love the new fabric, it is
notably softer than the old fabric. While I love my old knickers and
expect them to last 400 years, my only complaint was the fabric is so hard
it marks my Brooks saddle. Makes me feel like Grant is listening. Jury is
out on the bottom elastic (never had a problem with the velcro, but I guess
it could chafe if overtightened). The new design works - taking up elastic
keeps the knickers above my calves and like I said already, it's all soft.
However, there is a 6-inch-long elastic tag, which the cat loves, but I
don't think it's long enough to get in the chain or a spoke. And easy
enough to roll around and tuck back in. I like them.

Those are pure friction, right? If so, then maybe: some people are able
to successfully friction shift 10 speed drivetrains. Many others find
the spacing too close and have difficulty accurately friction shifting
high sprocket-count Hyperglide-type cassettes. For me, the line seems to
be between 7 and 8: friction shifting 7 works fine, but with 8 I get a
lot of ghost shifts. And I'm no novice with friction shifting, having

Re: [RBW] epiphany, or just a reminder

2013-11-16 Thread Kelly
I'm skeptical on planing beyond a good feeling only in that to gain energy
you have to give it away first. If the frame bends / flexes under power
than planes back you have given the energy away in the first place bending
the frame instead of transmitting that power to the ground in the first
place.
I'm sure it exists but I see no advantage to it. You don't get power for
free.

With all the talk of planing and what sort of tubing makes it happen, it
is interesting to hear someone describe what surely seems to be the same
thing with a Rivendell. I can't say I've experienced it, but I do wonder if
the wonderful fit and (for me, anyway) geometry of my road Rivs (including
the Ram) encourages a position that in turn encourages spirited riding,
 especially on hills.

My erstwhile 1973 Grand Record had (at least to my heft) a much lighter
frame than any of the Rivs, but it didn't feel faster -- though OTOH again,
it had heavier wheels and poorer tires (IRC Tandems). OTOH again, these
same tires on the tank of the also erstwhile Herse felt fast -- the Herse
seemed to encourage spirited riding, too; but at least two previous owners
ditched it because it didn't plane for them (at least one owner much my
 size).

I wish someone would do an analysis for geometry and fit and power output
what Jan has done for planing.

Ok, here's the epiphany: after all this work, my favorite bike to hammer

the bike just matches my pedal stroke. The frame is flexy when I am

Gears are 26 to 97 in about 5-inch steps. I think it's cozy for me

Thanks Bruce. That's close to where my bike is also, even with the 180

[RBW] WTT: My 54cm San Marcos for Your Silver Quickbeam (SO.CAL)

2013-11-16 Thread Tony Lockhart
I am interested in trading my 54cm Soma San Marcos for an equivalent sized
Quickbeam in the silver. I'm not sure which frame size I'm need, but my
56cm Sam Hillborne fits like a glove (just the like SM).

The bike is in almost perfect condition, comes with a rack, 2 rando box
bags (one tweed/tan, other black), Nitto everywhere, and a pretty decent
non-Riv-Standard drivetrain.

Wheels: 105 hub, Open Pro, 28mm Ribmo tires
Shifting: Silver DT shifters, 105 RD, Tiagra FD
Gears: Tiagra compact crank, SRAM pg950 11-26 (9-speed)
Other Parts: Nitto 65 seatpost, Noodle bars, Tektro brakes + levers,
Technomic Stem, Mark's Rack, VO decalleur, decalleur on both box bags,
no-name saddle, MKS GR9 pedals w/clips and straps

[RBW] Flash Ride of Colorado Trail Report

2013-11-16 Thread Deacon Patrick
Mike met me at Little Scraggy parking lot outside of Buffalo Creek about 9am
this morning and we had a wondrous 4 hours of riding and leisurely hour lunch
on a warmish day for mid-November in Colorado. It started off in the 30’s and
warmed to the 40’s. We heard the winds in the trees, but didn’t feel them until
we entered the burn area on Shinglemill Trail.

No idea of distance and I’m not sure if Mike had a computer. We rode the
Colorado Trail over hill and dale, a few creeks, lots of roots and a few rock
gardens. Eventually the rifles in the distance we getting too close for my
brain, so we turned around and made a loop of it on the trails north of the CT.
We dropped down to Buffalo Creek Road, a nice double track that follows the
creek down, then turned up Shinglemill for a vigorous, fun, twisting smooth
climb through the Buffalo Creek Fire burn area. No trees meant the 30-40 mph
winds we’d been hearing had free access to us. I learned that winding single
track, steep climbing, and strong gusting cross winds do not play nicely with
vertigo. I limped along after that, making it back to the parking lot at 2pm.

MIke was a joy to ride with and I look forward to the next time we get to ride.
Thanks, Mike!

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Half Mitts

2013-11-16 Thread Aaron Young
Update:

Went on a short ride in low 40's-degrees weathers, plus some winds, so
temps at the lowest in upper 30's perhaps. I used the new half-mitts with
the thumb. I was surprised at how bulky the thumb felt, and it was a bit
awkward to get the thumb out. The half mitts are nice because you can
quickly remove your fingers, but the full thumb has to be pulled off
separately just like a regular glove. Its a small thing, and in really
cold weather probably would be worth it, but on an only mildly cold ride, I
think I'll stick with the old style, thumbless half-mitts.

I think I would prefer a half-thumb, instead of a full thumb cover, though.
Then it would cover the tip of the thumb and the back (dorsal side), but
leave the palmar open - just like the rest of the mitt.

uncover the tips of all finger and even thumb if I needed.

I recently bought a thumbed paid of half mitts, but haven't had the
need to use them yet. They seem a bit bulkier than the thumbless versions
because of the thumbs of course, but also they are fuzzier on the inside
than the older version - the material is different. They will probably be
better for colder temps with the extra fuzz in there.

When they are not doing the job, I might try a pair of light gloves under

Re: [RBW] Half Mitts

2013-11-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Years ago I owned a very nice pair of winter gloves that were designed as
fingerless cycling gloves with long gauntlets with a flip-over mitten cover
for the fingers. The thumb remained full-length-covered.

A very sensible design, IMO, tho' it too suffered from the mitten defect of
difficult operation of dt or other skinny shift levers.

Does anyone still make these?

Re: [RBW] Re: Flash Ride of Colorado Trail Report

2013-11-16 Thread qwerty
Enjoyed a fantastic ride and weather (for Nov @ 9,000' elev). Best of
all, I was able to connect with Patrick and get a chance to become a
bit more acquainted. I can confirm that yes, Patrick does indeed ride
shoeless, in late fall, on single track. It was quite amusing to see
the expressions on the faces of riders we passed when they saw us
coming. Old guys, on old-looking bikes, and one with no shoes!

Proof it happened here:

Thanks Patrick, 'twas a most pleasurable day. Looking forward to more!

Mike met me at Little Scraggy parking lot outside of Buffalo Creek about
9am this morning and we had a wondrous 4 hours of riding and leisurely hour
lunch on a warmish day for mid-November in Colorado. It started off in the
30’s and warmed to the 40’s. We heard the winds in the trees, but didn’t
feel them until we entered the burn area on Shinglemill Trail.

No idea of distance and I’m not sure if Mike had a computer. We rode the
Colorado Trail over hill and dale, a few creeks, lots of roots and a few
rock gardens. Eventually the rifles in the distance we getting too close
for my brain, so we turned around and made a loop of it on the trails north
of the CT. We dropped down to Buffalo Creek Road, a nice double track that
follows the creek down, then turned up Shinglemill for a vigorous, fun,
twisting smooth climb through the Buffalo Creek Fire burn area. No trees
meant the 30-40 mph winds we’d been hearing had free access to us. I
learned that winding single track, steep climbing, and strong gusting cross
winds do not play nicely with vertigo. I limped along after that, making it
back to the parking lot at 2pm.

MIke was a joy to ride with and I look forward to the next time we get to
 ride. Thanks, Mike!

 With abandon,
 Patrick

[RBW] Re: Invisible Bike Helmet.

2013-11-16 Thread hsmitham
Tom, no idea either about Snell evaluating the device. My only opinion is
that it looks uncomfortable wrapped around one's neck...here in arid Los
Angeles I can assure you I won't be wearing one, perhaps if I lived in
Copenhagen but that's not happening either.

I'm very curious about how the accelerometers detect a tumble

Tim, it would be fun to know the technically how it senses an imminent
impact.

Peter, I read the Snobs opinion and it's quite funny I especially like the
idea of one for use in the neither region...and yes they are thinking
outside the box regarding safety which is good. I can't say the same for
the Snob.

Jeff, I think anything new is a hard sell especially when we are so
comfortable wearing the current helmets...I'd rather see an intensified
effort to make bike travel safer and more efficient here in the land of
petrol beasts.

Okay I've been meaning to add to this thread :-) Here's a favorite
regarding the Nord-Lock washer...page 32 hand written note, Just because
we recommend a Nord-Lock washer does not mean we think they require it.
They don't. But Nord-Locks are always good. It's possible that we'll sell
them on our site, but this is the *kind* of thing that causes insanity.
Now that's priceless.

I tuned out when it wasn't going to happen on Mt Diablo, the only place
that makes a lick of sense for a Rivendell National Jamboree. I would hope
that Rivendell makes it happen - a series of three adjacent S24Os? That
would let staff and attendees come and go, and allow for more fluid
campsite reservations.

Not even remotely volunteering.

I agree with you, Don, sounds like a great drivetrain for a great bike.

Many (most?) of my bikes have DT shifters, which I think are great.
However, when my custom Riv came available at one of my LBSs for a great
price, I couldn't resist it. It has a 3x10 Campy drivetrain - with carbon
Record brifters. Not what I would have chosen, but admit it all works
really slick. The Silver brakes clear the 32mm GB Cypres and the 45mm
 Honjo's just fine.

just take the Larkspur ferry, and then ride over.
