Re: [RBW] ebay Atlantis 61 cm
The original Atlantis was a Bridgestone bike. When RBW released the Atlantis, it was named Atlantis 2. It was the first and only Rivendell Atlantis and was always called the Atlantis 2. Since its release towards the end of 1999, it's had a few changes (mid fork braze ons, kickstand plate and maybe others), but it's always been the one and only marque. I could be wrong on all counts. On Tuesday, January 21, 2014 9:32:17 AM UTC-8, grant wrote: Too many guys wanted the mixte but not the Betty, so we renamed the Betty, and then for the fun of it, lengthened the chainstays on the two larger models (part of the longer chainstays are better craze around here lately). The diaga-stay angle varies with the frame size because of the tricky lower seat tube intersection. The 60 has a diff lug than the 50, 55. On an anally faux-French level there would be no variation, but to me (whose vote counts, I can't help that part), 1/4 of the beauty--the deep inner secret beauty--of the Cheviot/Betty is something that is hard to describe in words without seeming to sound like---that's not what I MEANT! But some of the ingredients of the description are here: *It is as good a bike as I can design, it has crazy unnecessary flourishes (the seat lug in particular, and the fork crown), and the graphics are spectacular and unique, and yet it is (the hard part to describe) slightly rough around the edges in a way that would be unacceptable for a showstopper that costs 2.5x as much, but is not just ACceptable for a bike of this price, but actually adds to it in a humility kind of way.* A critic would call that a cop-out, but would be wrong. We're not out to appeal to the wannabe 1950's professor with a pipe. We want, and I want, the Cheviot to be under the butts of super normal people who are open to a new world of bikes and a way of looking at them. I am probably too involved in the bike to try to describe it at this emotional level, but it is something like that. I think it should be the most popular bike we've ever made, but I also know diagatube and stays represent a high hurdle to many, and that's OK, too. It's not like it's a high-volume bike. We're getting in about 2.2 per state, early March. I hope we can sell that many before August, and then the nexties might be in January. I can't believe I didn't mention the longer chainstays, but I'm glad it came up. It was a can't see the forest for the trees thing. [RBW] Another RBBH Visit
Woohoo! I got in a visit to the mothership last week... Thanks to Keven for the conversation and information. Cool to put a face with the helpfull email. As part of the visit I got a demo ride on a 58cm TT Sam w/ the new albastache bars. My favorite part of the store was actually the ceiling grid of bells. Amazingly quirky and beautiful. My attempt at a 650B frame discussion was very quickly poo-pohed unfortunately, and as there wasn't a 58/650B AHH around for a demo anyway it was a mute point. Maybe next time I'll swing into the HQ and check that out instead. I bought one of the medium shopsacks and a t shirt, that shopsack is my new favorite bag! Most of us can't picture a paradise of unspeakable beauty without flowers, trees, and animals. Would it be heaven for an avid birdwatcher if there are no birds? Would a fisherman want to spend eternity with no fish? And would it be heaven for a cowboy without horses? While theologians may be stubborn in classifying animals' souls as inferior to those of humans, those learned scholars must admit that descriptions of heaven in the Bible are sketchy at best. The Bible does not give a definitive answer on the question of whether we will see our pets in heaven, but it does say, ... with God, all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26, NIVhttp://christianity.about.com/od/faqhelpdesk/p/newinternationa.htm) My Cairn Terrier, Charlie, is an important part of my life and I often feel he is a gift God has given me. You probably feel the same way about your pet. That’s why I like the story about the elderly widow whose beloved little dog died after fifteen faithful years. Distraught, she went to her pastor. Parson, she said, tears streaming down her cheeks, the vicar said animals have no souls. My darling little dog Fluffy has died. Does that mean I won’t see her again in heaven? Madam, said the old priest, God, in his great love and wisdom has created heaven to be a place of perfect happiness. I got my pop's Windsor into rideable condition last night. I rode it around the block and I'm extremely pleased so far. The real highlight is that the 40 year old Dia Compe centerpull brakes have extraordinary braking power. I'm really really impressed. It's not done in my mind until the racks and fenders are on, but getting it to rideable was a big step. The racks ought to be in soon, maybe tomorrow, and then I'll be able to do the rack and fender install. Even without racks, the Saddlesack Medium fits, so this bike is S24O ready. It's full Alba-smile worthy. Imperfection side story. I was so thrilled how the bar tape looked with clear shellac. I ran out of clear and rushed down to the hardware store. They were down to their last can of clear, and that can was kind of banged up. It had splatter and drips on it, but it seemed full when I shook it. Whatever. I bought it and have done a couple more coats of clear. It's looking more amber, and the one side that I first did with clear looks lighter than the side that got three coats of this tainted can. Definitely -- the flat wood fenders are fine in a drizzle, especially with a flap to catch the run off, but not terribly effective in a hard rain. [RBW] Unracing from a non-Riv bike seller
Though I don't live in Atlanta anymore, I still like to keep up with bikey doings in my hometown. Houndstooth Road is a local bike shop that sells euro-styled sensible city cycles - Bobbin bikes, Bella Ciaos, Pilen, Royal Dutch, Linus and the like - and they seem to be doing a pretty good business. I follow them on Facebook and noticed that they mentioned they'd started a series of coffee shop rides around town, and suggested that people go to the URL unracing.com to find out more. That URL redirects to their website. Now, I'm not sure if Grant has a patent on the whole unracer idea, and I'm not even sure it would be a big enough deal for him to even consider it, but I found it interesting that the concept seems to be catching on and spreading. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: The Windsor Rides!
Thanks everyone for the kind words. This really has been fun. The racks and fenders setup has really got me excited. Local (SF) retailer BoxDog Bikes has a 20% discount on all fenders through February, in part because we've had no rain. I bought some smooth 700x50 Berthoud Stainless Steel jobbies from them. The front and rear racks are the Velo Orange Constructeur models. The rear attaches at the dropout and then twice to the fender and that's all! Super clean look. Since these steel fenders feel totally bomber I expect it'll be plenty solid. It will be my first time to do an install like this, but it will be so old school and cool. The front attaches at the dropout, once to the fender, and once through the fork crown daruma. So, on a bike that has zero rack braze-ons, and no canti posts, I'll have front and rear racks with zero P-clamps. I think that's so hot. Anyway, stay tuned. [RBW] Re: Rare Early 60s Raleigh - a set on Flickr
Eric- My educated guess is that it's a Mountie model. Here's the 1967 catalog page: http://www.kurtkaminer.com/1967raleighcat_us_05_lg.jpg The Mountie was a 20 wheeled bike, and it's hard to tell from your photo what size wheels/how big the bike is. And in the catalog the Mountie was a single-speed/coaster braked model, whereas the one in your photo has caliper brakes and a S-A three-speed hub. So I don't know for sure. Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis w/ some fatties!
tony: I've never taken photos but it's pretty easy. I just make a template from cardboard since it usually takes me a couple of shots to get it right. Then I cut the HDPE with a box cutter (this stuff is tough, use a new blade). When I've gotten it properly fit, then drill holes where the zip ties need to be, and tie it in place. RE: [RBW] ebay Atlantis 61 cm
If that frame sells for that price (and why not?), after 10 years of good and hard (not abusive) use, it will sell for more than its original price. Which was what? Not to use original price to value it. It is worth less than a new Atlantis, and priced accordingly. Re: [RBW] The Windsor Rides!
After the racks and fenders are done, it will go into full daily rider service. Meanwhile, the real emotional part of the project can kick off. Some of you will remember that my father and I were collaborating on the Grip King Supreme. These were extra pedal cages that augment the Grip King. We did the design, and made and sold a prototype batch here to the group. If you search the archives or my flickr for Grip King Supreme you'll see them. When I picked up the bike over Christmas, I also picked up all the tooling my father had been working on to help get me into production. The setup is not complete, and I'll have to reverse engineering the procedure, but I have a general idea of what he had in mind. The real topper for the Windsor will be when I put on the Grip King Supremes. Hopefully I will finally get into production, and the 20 or so emails I've saved from prospective customers will finally be returned. On the color scheme: as I've previously written, it'll be a beautiful warm green (matched to my 1940-era BSA wool shirt) that had input from all the present Rivsters when I was out in March. We looked at color chips in nice bright sun and I'm trusting Mark and JB to dial it in. And, as per Grant, any color headtube as long as it's cream. Whatever. In my not-that-educated knowledge of Raleigh of that era, it's hard to pinpoint some of these off models, as the online record of catalogs (US, UK, etc) are spotty and have several year gaps. Also, since Raleigh was the 800 pound gorilla of the industry of that era who did what they wanted to and made lots of different bikes, there are some not-in-catalog varieties out there. What an outa-the-ballpark hit, eh? I'm still astounded! Every picture just gets better! (And thanks to Keven for talking about his Appaloosa and for saying, Stick with saying you want 55 tires; Grant can do it.) On the not-a-mixte point: I am a fan of mixtes to be sure, but being a died-in-the-wool (where did that expression come from anyway?) tomboy all my life, I just couldn't do it. Hats off to all the mixte-riding men out there (in addition to the women). I also elected to have a fancy paint job meaning cream accents in nice luggy places. As a side note, my protobleriot is a sandblasted clearcoat and is beautiful; I've just always wanted this color of a bike. [RBW] Bianchi
Inspired by Bill Lindsey's restoration/resurrection of his Father's Windsor I took another look at my Father's old Bianchi as I stopped to pick up some more things from their townhouse. They are ninety and just last November moved into in a retirement home with nursing care for my Mother. We are about to have an estate sale and sell what hasn't been picked up by family members. I certainly have more bikes than I need but was thinking as I and my siblings gave bicycles-including this Bianchi-to my parents on their 60th birthday it would be nice to bring this back to life and ride it out to see them. It's about 16 miles roundtrip from my house to their residence. Besides the sentimental drive which would probably carry for me anyway, is a Bianchi of this age and condition a worthy candidate for restoration? I don't know how to identify the model but it is lugged and the frame is made in Italy. The front derailleur and DT shifters are Campagnola. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. A bit more work on the poster/graphic in the last two days. Black Block version: http://www.flickr.com/photos/philipwilliamson/12082803183/ Bright Color version: http://www.flickr.com/photos/philipwilliamson/12082799903/ I approached my friend to print us some posters (http://peternevins.bigcartel.com/), but quantity/price/interest are all TBD. I think the black block with a bright color on the bicycle would make a nice poster. Someone on the list recommended a semi-local screenprinter, and I pinged them about tee-shirts, as well. [RBW] Re: Bianchi
I'm flattered that my project inspired you. I think it's a great idea, depending on what you mean by worthy. It's definitely a horrible investment. My dad's windsor might have been worth $100 before I worked on it. Now it's totally non-stock, but it's a rideable bike. It's probably worth a tiny bit more, maybe $150, but I've probably put $600 and 50 hours of work into it. Think about it like car people think about car restorations. Do it if you'll enjoy doing it and if it will mean something to you. The most enjoyable part about cycling for me is doing builds. I enjoy doing builds more than I enjoy cycling (but I enjoy cycling a lot). I would have a build in progress constantly if I could afford it and had the space. My father gave me that love for working in the shop, and that's part of why I relished my rebuild of his bike. In one word: *Bhagavad Gita*. Action without desire for the fruits of action. In Christian, and more anthropomorphic terms, doing all for the will of God. A hard lesson indeed! But the result will be the return to the source (Taoist phrase) where all opposition finds its natural resolution in perfect equilibrium. Most of our fretting is based on illusion. [RBW] Re: Bianchi
Bill, Well stated...my wife comes home and finds me wrenching in the garage and later tells me I have a huge smile on my face. I think I'm a freak but I love the smell of Phil Wood grease it's a comfort smell maybe it should be my new cologne? In terms of worth and building a bike up I realize while I rebuild this Trek 850 it's a losing proposition in terms of money spent, however it's how I choose to spend my time and I rationalize that it'll be a family friends loaner bike. Plus I'm learning and honing my skills so when I build up the next bike I'll be better prepared, nothing like doing to learn. And when out on the road or in the outback one can make repairs and not get stuck. ~Hugh On Wednesday, January 22, 2014 4:17:43 PM UTC-8, Bill Lindsay wrote: I'm flattered that my project inspired you. My father gave me that love for working in the shop, and that's part of why I relished my rebuild of his bike. certainly a worthwhile project, whether you simply rub it and restore the bearings or treat it as a frame and Riv-ize it. Either way, a classy ride. Not so much an investment, but a labor of love. Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis w/ some fatties!
Hugh, I'm with you, I haven't ridden that much since the new tires are on but I love the look of the bike... rough and ready... I did take it out in the snow tonight for my shift at the bike co-op. Really short ride but on my way home I strayed into a small park with plenty of snow on grass with tree roots. I felt like a little kid, lots of fun! Not going anywhere, not logging miles, only spending about 10 min really... The tires did great on the streets which are still a bit of a mess in my neighborhood, hardpack snow, salt, black ice, and clear pavement all in random patches. On the snowy park I was definitely able to loose traction with some turns but for such small tread they gave me more confidence than I had anticipated. Enough that I'm actually contemplating commuting tomorrow. Going to be mighty cold, I'll make the call in the morning. The DIY studs are intriguing! Might be a fun project though I'm not sure these tires are a good candidate. I'm definitely jealous of your snow-less, moderate to amazing constant weather patterns! [RBW] Re: Bikes for sale-Michigan area listers please take note
Beautiful bikes, Steve! I'll be surprised (and a bit confused) if they don't sell quickly. Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis w/ some fatties!
Tony, Don't be jealous, were in major a drought I can't remember the last time we had rain?? And the high pressure pushing the jet stream North and East has created an inversion layer which traps nitrogen oxide and carbon particulates close to the ground making breathing a bummer. Yeah it's nice to have Sunny days in the 80's but then there's the too much of a good thing issue. I'm about to do a medicine dance to summon the rain Gods. So bundle up and take a short ride in that blustery weather my friend. ~Hugh Life is like riding a bicycle.
