[RBW] Re: Anyone using a bagman to support a large saddle sack?

2014-02-15 Thread Matthew J
Every now and then if the weather report promises no rain for the weekend,
I choose the genderless / rack boss-less Kellogg Spectrum as my get away
transit. Store my stuff in a Carradice Super C with Bagman hoop behind.

Works very well keeping the bag up and off the wheel. I load up with
tools, spare inner tubes, food, clothes and my Ziess binoculars as I like
to do some star gazing when I get away from the city. Imagine all this
comes to around 15 pounds or so.

Takes a bit of effort to get the Bagman set up. Would not be an issue at
all if you plan to get it set up once and leave it for an extended time.

Wondering how the same setup would work with a large saddle sack.

Re: [RBW] Re: Short ride post snowstorm

2014-02-15 Thread ascpgh
Sometimes the only motivation to persevere the trials of any season is the
anticipation of the next one's change.

My current winter evil is the glacial formations at the edge of roadway
wheel paths, accumulations of snow, slush, pothole guts, sleet in a
contiguous frozen 4-6 thick sun-polished frozen solid block covering the
road that resists definition by headlight and will knock you down if you
veer into and bump its edge.

Marathon Winter studs leave a distinct clawing signature on the impossible
surface as the wheel turns against it if you try to ride these spills out.
The symmetric white scratching contrasts nicely with the dark brown of the
frozen glop.

Ah, it's just winter and at least I'm riding. It may be worse in the spring
by the looks of these roads after this season.

I've been using a Bagman under my Carradice Nelson Longflap saddle bag for

prevent the sway-induced wobbles but enough freedom to not make the bike

I do not see how the bagman could support the large saddlesack. The base of
the saddlesack is the same as the length of the nitto r-14 rack. Google the

It's always nice to see a new line of cro-moly bikes enter the market.
With the growing interest and participation in adventure bike riding, I
don't understand why all of these companies limit the tire clearance on
their tourers to 40'ish mm. From reading various forums there is a market
for traditional diamond frame bicycles that will take 29'er tires. RBW's
Hunqapillar is the one I'm most familiar with and Velo-Orange is coming out
with their Camargue in May, which I plan to purchase. That's about it as
far as mainstream brands and I'm not even sure there are many smaller
brands selling bikes like this.

Which length bungee balls do you use? Seems the smallest I can find are the

I run the Saddlesack Medium on the Windsor. The rack didn't line up
quite right with the slots, so I elected to do a strap solution. I have
REI webbbing straps in all lengths for generic lashing opportunities. I
selected the very shortest ones, which are probably 16 long. They are
brown, and have just a feedthrough plastic buckle.

To thread them through, I pushed a spare spoke into a slot and popped it
out the other side. I used the elbow end of the spoke to catch a loop of
twine. Pull out the spoke and now twine is threaded through. Feed the
webbing through the loop of twine and pull out the twine. Now the strap is
 threaded through.

This lashing solution is working great, and I'm certain I'll replicated
it for the Saddlesack Large, next time I load that up. I may use webbing
with a fastek buckle for quick release and quick reattachment.

I woudn't do it. the bagman has a little part that angles up to support

In my experience even the expedition bagman angles up and digs into the
bottom of the camper longflap, not allowing me to take full advantage of
the bag. I got an r14 that does the job well enough.

Re: [RBW] QB appreciation

2014-02-15 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks -- nice shoes. Not actually in the market, since I've stocked up on
so many as new pairs (Bass, Timberland pre-outsourced, Bean -- also US,
Topsiders) -- probably have 6-7 -- that they will probably see me out my
remaining brief lifetime. A couple of pairs -- LL Bean, Timberland -- have
been my everyday use outdoor bedroom slippers for 20+ years and, while
beaten up, they still have much life left. The Timberland pair in
particular -- am wearing them now -- is worn and battered, but no holes in
uppers or soles and no splitting seams. The Bean left has split at the left
tongue seam, but I will sew it back up. I rode miles in these shoes,
besides daily wear and walking.

Ain't it sh*t to have formerly good stuff, like Maine Timberlands,
prostituted for the brand name, made cheaply in China or where ever, and
now simply empty signifiers? Good to know that Redwing still seems to be
making their goods in the US.

Re: [RBW] Re: Best Rainy footwear/boots

2014-02-15 Thread Mike On A Bike
Does anybody know if ShinShields actually solve the problem of water
getting into shoes? My long-legged self experiences a large gap with the
Riv rain paints (bikegods forbid making a thin + tall sized pant!) and this
is the only weakness in my otherwise hermetically sealed raingear. I don't
mind forking up $24 or whatever for them if they're actually effective.

Anyone use gaiters? I'm thinking of getting a set for hiking and cycling.
The biggest problem for riding in heavy rain is water getting into my boots
or shoes, which maybe the gaiters could help alleviate. (I'd go for the
MUSA ShinShields, but I'd rather spring for rolls of Saran Wrap.)

Train 761 originates in LA is the earlier one. Train 763 originates in
San Diego and is the later arrival.

To catch the 761, you'd need to get an early Metrolink from Irvine (since
Amtrak's service ends there that weekend). There's a 5:24 AM that arrives
LA 6:40 or a 6:03 that arrives LA 7:20 (cutting it close). It could be

[RBW] Re: New bicycle brand from Merry Sales = New Albion

Sure wish I could find consistent pricing information on these bikes. I do
like that mixte.

Gosh, the mixte frame looks quite similar to some of RBW's previous mixte

Re: [RBW] A Rivendell 29+ Camping bike.

2014-02-15 Thread Anne Paulson
Since I started looking into a bike with wde tires for
bikepacking, I've thought a 29+ would make sense for Rivendell. 29+
such a Rivvy sort of thing.

I'm going to be using my Krampus 29+ for camping. I'm already planning
the first trip. Within a week of its arrival (whenever that is)
Midnight Bike and I will hop on the train to SF for an S24O at Marin
Headlands.

I have a serious drool going over the Surly ECR 29+ off road camping bike.
Now, if Rivendell made such a bike, I would absolutely have to sell
