Re: [RBW] Re: Ram versus Roadeo; trade?
The perhaps unobtainable ideal would be the lightest possible Rivendell road bike, but I'd accept a bit of weight for the signature feel and handling which is the principal goal. My objection, such as it is, to the Ram is not so much the weight (IIRC, built but not accessorized it weighs 26 lb with rack, dynamo lighting, compared to ~23 for the errand custom similarly equipped -- but that is fixed, of course) but that the handling is a wee bit staider than ideal -- but ideal here is rather nebulous. My brother ought to be bringing the old Bertin (60 X 57 or so) out with him, and perhaps that's the most reasonable option. He says it handles very well, and I know the frameset is quite light. But it's not a Rivendell, alas. Move along there. Bertin (if I buy it) build: my idea at the moment is a 1X5 or perhaps a S3X with freewheel -- keep it very simple (and light) as befits a dedicated fw gofast. Or better yet, one of those (forget who makes them) 120 mm OL spaced cassette hubs for a 1X7. I've got the build parts: frame comes with headset; plenty of TA Pro 5 Vis cranksets and rings, cogs, front hubs, a 7400 rd, very nice old 600 single pivots, 7400 DA levers, KEO Maxes, shift lever, original issue Flite. Will need bb, rims, tires, stem and bar ... oh dear, another build project. We'll see. If I do buy a frame, of any kind, it will be to wait for good deals and gather parts slowly and cheaply. It's not as if I don't have enough bikes to ride as it is. Re: [RBW] Re: Homer's first proper, if not long, ride
I love the 44 cm B 135s on my Fargo, except for the flats position, which the bar's upsweep makes awkward. But the ramps are wonderful. I run the even nicer Maes Parallel on two Riv road bikes. I have Noodles on the Ram. I swapped my too-wide 46 cm Noodles for 42s and installed a stem 1 cm longer than for my Maes Parallels to give the same reach despite the Noodle's sweepback. I must say that, so set up, the Noodles give the Maeses a good run for the money, and I love the Maeses. I can run the Noodle's tops a wee bit higher because of the deeper drop (140 versus 125 mm). True, the ramps aren't quite as nice and long as with the Maeses or the B135, but while I do prefer the Maes Parallel for road riding, the narrower Noodle so set up runs a very close second and I have no plans to swap it out. Re: [RBW] Homer's first proper, if not long, ride
The VO Rando bars are a completely different type of bar than the Noodle. I bought a pair of the VO and hated them because I thought they were way too narrow on top for me. For them to work for me they would need to be 46 or 48cm wide where the levers mount and maybe 52 or 54 at the drops. But the VO I bought seem to be 48 where the barcons mount and that is just way too narrow on the hoods for my (skeletal) frame. Not that they're bad, just my preference and body type, obviously your preference is different. I think Nitto makes some sort of Rando bar also, not sure what the model number is though. It is ride is smooth, responsive, easy uphill and into the wind. It handles superbly in gravel, even fresh post-flooding dumps of dusty white boulders (thanks Johnson County!). The Marathon Supremes (700C x 40 mm nominal; about 37 mm right now) are characteristically Schwalbe-ish, but at 40-45 psi are cushy enough for the time being. There is plenty of clearance for 40 mm tires, even with fenders, and more without. I remain unsure about Noodles, though. I'm used to narrower bars with a rando bend (the LHT has the VO Chris's Rando Bar) and a longer ramp. Not that the Noodles are uncomfortable, but when I hopped on the LHT later to head into the office, the rando ramps felt downright luxurious in comparison. Time will tell. I'm interested in reading comments from those who might have used Noodles then switched to a rando bar, or vice versa, or have one of each on different bikes. Pictures show that Iowa is not flat. And that we do indeed have cattle (and hogs, too, but I can't post odors): https://www.flickr.com/photos/125863173@N06/sets/72157645186309248/ -- Bob -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Ram versus Roadeo; trade?
I think the number of eyelets and braze ons are limited on the Roadeos because it is (1) purpose built as go fast and (2) weight! I'm guessing that the weight issue was an important target for Grant/Riv: sub-20# steel bike. A full complement of frame braze ons can add a lot of weight (relatively speaking) to a light frame. Same goes for down tube shifter mounts (which were purposefully left off in order to use certain type of butted downtube). And the use of threadless stem compared to quill. The chain stay fender mount: yes, it is not optimal (from a fender installation point), but a long-ish spacer solves that problem. IIRC, the bottom bracket shell is not a Riv-bottom bracket. A different one was selected to use a particular seat tube. (I could just be making this up, so anyone with real info please speak up.) Anyway: I'm pretty sure this isn't the first Roadeo having added braze ons. IIRC, someone had seat stay rack mount added, and Grant/Riv has written about putting downtube shifter mounts on Roadeos. If you're in the market for it, you should have that conversation with them-- I think they're quite accommodating (but there might be another bike that's better suited for your intended purpose). The problem I've had with the SF made shorts and tops is they do not account for the humid heat we get here in the Midwest. I probably wouldn't like the Nitto rando bars either ;) Personally I think anything that you can get through a randonneuring ride with is a Rando bar. YMMV. :) On Thu, Jul 10, 2014 at 11:10 AM, Bob Cook rcook.i...@gmail.com wrote: On Thursday, July 10, 2014 10:02:09 AM UTC-5, Jim Bronson wrote: The VO Rando bars are a completely different type of bar than the Noodle. But the VO I bought seem to be 48 where the barcons mount and that is just way too narrow on the hoods for my (skeletal) frame. Jim, I saw a pair of Nitto rando bars on an old Trek the other day, and I'd say the VO bars are almost a different kind of bar than the Nitto, too. As you say, the tops are narrow—a centimeter or so narrower than Grand Bois, if my take on the measurements is correct—and the ramps and reach are extra long. The flare is wider, too. The flare and the long drop extensions I like; the reach, not as much as I get older. I think Nitto makes some sort of Rando bar also, not sure what the model number is though. I believe—though Patrick (de Nouvelle Mexique, pas le diacre) will know better—that the Nitto rando bar is the B 135. -- Bob -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: knicker recommendations?
The BF Classic knickers are indeed fine looking pants, but I've had a pair wear through the seat very quickly. Also, I find them cut a little low in the rise -- I like cycling pants that come up high -- like old man pants. That way they don't leave a gap at the back when you are in the hooks. OTOH, the BF hemp knickers that I have are very comfortable and, so far, durable. Not nearly as natty, though. I've said this before, but it bears repeating: a good seamster/seamstress can turn a pair of good, Goodwill, wool trousers into knickers very easily. I've done it myself with crude but effective results. Choose fabric with a dense weave and with some weight to it; not tropical wool. My favorite (which I foolishly gave away) was a tightly woven, medium weight tan wool gabardine that would not wrinkle (another sign of good fabric) and which I simply amputated, hemmed, and added velcro to it. [RBW] Re: knicker recommendations?
I've had a tough time finding kickers too, that fit well and are not too baggy. The Riv's are too baggy and don't stretch, the Swerves too tight for my mesomorphic frame. My favorites are the Portland Cyclewear ones ( no longer made) and the Zoic Reign's. Comfortable through the hips and trim at the calf. The Zoic's are too lightweight though so I'd like to find something heavier . I've tried the climbing ones (Prana,Outdoor Research/RAB) but they are all too baggy at the calf. I prefer the fit of the cycling specific ones. I may order a pair of the Beta's and see how they fit. They are an inch shorter ( @19) than the ones I have so they may be a touch short. The Aerotech ones are 17 long , too short for me at ~6ft. ~mike Carlsbad Ca -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] How many of your bikes will take the HAR?
For what it's worth, my Gunnar with the HAR installed, still fit on my car's roof rack this morning, using a QR style mount on the fork tips. Most lowrider racks prevent you from putting your bike on that type of roof-rack mount. On Wednesday, July 9, 2014 9:06:01 PM UTC-7, Bill Lindsay wrote: Tying this HAR thread with the Enmoot bike thread. IF I was able to go to the Entmoot, I'd be tempted to bring my double-double, since so many of you will be on your Quickbeams. My double-double has double fork tip eyelets and mid fork braze-ons, so I went ahead and set it up with my HAR. Of course I need to bag-match and wait for the olive HAR panniers, but this is going to be a sweet stripped down S24O setup. I used the trick of running a bolt from the inside of the eyelet and a nylock nut holding the rack onto that post from the outside https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-aJYGK52a7js/U74QpYj7UWI/B9s/AkcULL73iDI/s1600/IMG_3490.JPG More Photos of the setup https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/sets/72157642798847383/ On Wednesday, July 9, 2014 7:38:56 AM UTC-7, Bill Lindsay wrote: For sure the HAR will connect to the lower eyelets. On Tuesday, July 8, 2014 9:08:24 PM UTC-7, john muhl wrote: Both my Atlantis and Betty Foy have double eyelets but I did call before ordering and was told (can’t remember who at RBW answered) that mounting them to the lower eyelets (on my Saluki) should work just fine. They’re due to arrive on the 10th so I’ll find out for sure then. On Tue, Jul 8, 2014 at 1:07 PM, Bill Lindsay tape...@gmail.com wrote: The Hub Area Rack fits best on an eyelet above the fork tip and on mid-fork braze ons. Will it fit your bike? Most current Riv models have fork tips with double eyelets. If you buy a brand new A Homer Hilsen, Hunqapillar, Cheviut, Hillborne, or Atlantis, you are going to get double eyelet fork tips. If you buy a Roadeo or a San Marcos, you'll get single eyelets. I have a Hub Area Rack, have had it for a while. It was an early prototype that I talked them into letting me buy. For what it's worth, I paid a fair bit more for mine that you guys are paying now, but I share that as a reason for you to be happy, not as a reason for me to be sad. Anyhow, now that there are bags for it, I've pulled it back out. Only now do I realize that my old (2009) Hillborne does not have the upper eyelets and my old (2010) Hilsen also doesn't have them. Only my Bombadil and my Gunnar doublespeed has upper eyelets and mid fork braze ons. I wish I could snap my fingers and have upper eyelets appear on my Hilsen and my Hillborne so I could run this rack on those bikes as well. Oh well. Anyhow, as a workaround, it looks like it would be possible to run the HAR on the lower eyelets, but it might have a tilt to it. Not the end of the world but not ideal. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] trade or sell at Rivendell Jamboree?
I have a medium and my wife picked up a large. I use the medium for normal commuting and rambling. The large works great for overnights and huge farmer's market runs. All other things the same, I'd say the size decision maker should be whether you plan to use it for overnights. On Wednesday, July 9, 2014 10:41:22 PM UTC-7, AaronY wrote: Manny! [RBW] Re: knicker recommendations?
For summer wear I like the Castelli knickers. Although synthetic, they are lightweight, have a decent bib, and a good chamois. For fall/winter wear, I love the Ibex El Fito 3/4 wool knickers (either with or without bibs). I live in those from October - March. [RBW] Re: knicker recommendations?
I have a pair of twin 6 size 33 if your interested and in the Bay Area you can have them. I think I wore them once. The knicker thing just wasn't for me. If they're a little big just get them taken in, I think they were around $100 new. As a two time Saluki owner I am baffled as to why this beauty has not been snatched up. At $1400 he's giving it away. The velvet ride of GB Hetres and SS couplers so you can easily take it anywhere - what's not to love? And a 58 puts it under the tall part of the bell curve for sizing. Whoever buys it, builds it up and rides it will be doing some serious head-scratching wondering why someone else didn't beat him/her to the sale. Hang tough, Eric. It's a beauty and it will sell. [RBW] Re: Homer's first proper, if not long, ride
Awesome. My new 650b Homer is to arrive on Thursday. I'll post a ride report as well. Took advantage this morning of beautiful weather for twenty-some miles of rolling Iowa for Homer's first real ride. I must admit I wore padded shorts. Brooks, my English butler (see what I did there?), is simply not adequately accustomed to my posterior yet. The bike lives up to the hype. [RBW] FS: NEW Musa Pants - Butternut/Olive - Medium
I just bought these for $68 on 6/15 but decided to go with the black ones instead. Washed, but never worn other than around the house for a few minutes. I'm flexible on price, would rather them go to someone who will use them rather than sit unused in a drawer. $45? Let me know if interested and we can work it out.
