Re: [RBW] Re: One week without a front derailleur
I think White Industries can afford to offer a wide/narrow chainring for exactly the reasons you say that they can't afford to. To CNC a chainring, they need a CNC mill, the right materials, tooling and fixturing suitable to hold the material, and a competent CNC operator. They already have all those things. The only investment is a design, which is not nothing, but it's also not a huge monetary expense. It's Doug sitting at the CAD station and deciding to fire out a design. It's nothing like a derailleur. From the CNC manufacturing perspective, the tooth profile is a decorative feature. Just like if there was a hot new trend in 10mm pitch chains, White could react if they wanted to with a couple tweaks to existing design templates. The risk of doing any of these things is mainly deciding whether people would buy them or would you be stuck recycling a lot of inventory. Actual physical infrastructure investment would be nearly zero, which is why I am optimistic that it could happen. On Thursday, August 7, 2014 6:12:21 AM UTC-7, Matthew J wrote: That is too bad. l have had 3 back surgeries and 3 carpal tunnel / elbow surgeries so I have to run my bars (Salsa Woodchippers) HIGH. I use a Nitto Dirt Drop stem (10cm) at max extension (It took a little modification of the stem to allow the tight bends of the Woodchipper to fit through). So far my Atlantis is the only bike I can ride without severe numbness and pain in my hands. The bottom of the drops is about an inch lower than the seat. On my Ibis HD, I am running Jones bars with a real high stem and it isn't working. I think I will end up putting drop bars on it too. Re: [RBW] Re: One week without a front derailleur
I like the 4 tooth difference, since I have 17/21 Surly Dingle cogs on two bikes, which gives 67.5 and 50 with 42/38 rings. That seems low on the top end, but seems to work. I also have a 15t on the flip side for a 76.5 gear. That spread works for my riding, where a 2 or 3 tooth gap does not. The 4t difference is minimally viable for road/offroad, or flat/climbing. For me. Ideally... a FIVE tooth difference, 43/38 x 16/21 would give me EXACTLY what I want: 73.4 and 49.4 with 38mm tires. It would also give White a fixed or freewheel cog with a greater range than Surly, which would be another differentiator to justify the higher price. I think White's ENO line is focused on off-road singlespeeding, not on-road or all-round riding. Tinker, I think that's brilliant. Let's ride out to Petaluma and pitch it to them. To make a 16/21 dos freewheel, the just need to make the drivering. Heck, we might be able to make one ourselves. otherwise you can run dual single freewheels on a flipflop. you can easily do 43/38 today with a 110bcd crank. we should ride our proof of concept bikes out there and talk them into it over a few beverages. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FS: Brooks B17 Champion Special
Hi everyone I've a Brooks B17 Champion Special for sale. Saddle is used. Please get in touch off list if interested and I can send photos. $90 shipped, economy shipping. Honey color leather top, chrome rails. Leather is in very good shape with some abrasion marks on the nose and the corners along with some slight darkening due to use. Leather top is still pretty flat and symmetrical. The leather is seasoned and a little soft, and probably best for a rider no heavier than 165lbs. I am 185lbs, and it just doesn't work for me. I bought it recently off eBay and do not know the complete history of the saddle. Tension nut has not been turned so there should be a good number of miles left in it. It has the new rear badge so is a recent production. Many thanks, Soon Chung NYC -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. That is a late 90's Waterford-built all-rounder with Reynolds 753 frame and 531 fork. I know this because I have a similar one in my fleet. But I went for the cream headtube and, vanity, my name on the top tube. The one-colour frame option I think was about $1250. [RBW] Soma Grand Randonneur or Hetres or Compass Babyshoe Pass
Time to start shopping new tires for the Sam Hillborne and I've been thinking of going a little wider than the 38 Pari Motos. I know the Hetres have been the tire to go for but was thinking of purchasing from Riv since I have a few more things to pick up and they don't carry it. I appreciate the lighter/faster tire on the 650b for many rides that I do with the bike so I would like to keep the tire lighterweight, which would mean the green version of the Soma tire. Any experiences with the Babyshoe Pass? I use the Stampede Pass on the Roadeo and like them; I would imagine the Babyshoe would be much like it but wider/cushier. Re: [RBW] Soma Grand Randonneur or Hetres or Compass Babyshoe Pass
All these tires are fantastic. Here's how I understand the situation: Hetres are the standard. $60, 412g, skinwall, available with black, red, or white tread (if that's your thing. Babyshoe pass are the next-gen Hetre. Jan has said they have multiple improvements over the GB tires. $60, skinwall, 392g. EL Babyshoe pass are lighter with higher thread count. $80, 355g, skinwall or blackwall. Soma GR greens are competing with the Babyshoe EL (thin and light). $80, 300g, skinwall. Soma GR blues are kinda unique in comparison. Tougher rubber, thicker tread. $80, 610g, red skinwall. So, pick the characteristics that are most important to you. Price? = Babyshoe pass (improved, lighter Hetre for the same price) Color? = Hetres for tread colors, EL Babyshoe for blackwall Weight? = Soma GR greens win, but EL Babyshoe is close Strength? = Soma GR blues, or a different, more stout tire. I have personal experience only with Grand Bois tires; Lierre on my Riv Road and Cerf blue on my gofast. They're great tires that really transform the speed and handling of any bike. Re: [RBW] Re: One week without a front derailleur
On that note, I wonder if it's any more likely that a third party would make compatible wide-narrow rings. I have noticed there are at least one or two other direct-mount wide-narrow ring manufacturers out there, making rings for SRAM's XO/1x11 system, but I guess the demand is much higher for that than WI stuff. I know Home Brewed Components used to make aftermarket rings, but from what I gather that company is basically non-existant now. Of course I would way rather buy direct from White. Re: [RBW] Re: One week without a front derailleur
For sure *if* their CNC mill is already running at full capacity, *then* they need more capacity in order to expand their offerings and supply more parts. To me it's all about their perception of a need (do 1x riders really drop their chain with our current parts?), followed by a willingness to fill that need (Let's steal RaceFace's lunch money!) and then executing a design. The manufacturing part will take care of itself after that. From what Lynette said, they have only discussed the need, but haven't done anything about it yet. That gets me thinking... I have a VBC crankset on my road bike. It's a 44/30. I could just remove the front derailer and the 30T ring, and put on a bigger cassette. Maybe borrow the Rivvy 12-34 from my Hillborne. That would give me a 1x9 with gears of: 35,42,50,57,66,74,85,91,99 What else would I possibly need on a road bike? [RBW] Re: Bike locks ?
My opinion and experience. Honestly getting a high quality u-lock and using it correctly is the best theft deterrent and piece of mind when looking to protect the frame/fork or whole bike regardless of the bikes value. I use/used and like the Kryponite, Abus, and On Guard u-locks (mini versions). I've had my last Kryptonite u-lock going on six years of daily use. All good u-locks will be kind of hefty, but it's worth it. I wouldn't really recommend using more than one u-lock on the bike because of the hassle, excess weight, and redundancy/over-complication of the situation. If you live in an area without a lot of parking meters or well designed/useful bike racks, the kryptonite NY chain locks are great for fitting around bigger street sign poles. I believe Abus makes something similar, or you can make your own by buying the best chain and lock at a hardware store and sheathing it in a used tube. Though if one doesn't live in a high density area, or an area with a high theft problem, a single good u-lock will be sufficient for securing your bike. I also use Pitlock skewers on my hubs and seatpost for the bikes I ride in SF or other urban areas where practicality dictates locking them outside or even inside public garages or bike parking areas. These give me piece of mind to enjoy whatever it is I am doing and not having to fret about the wheels and seat. Combined with the u-lock I am pretty much worry free. Pay attention to what you lock up to and that you properly lock the frame to the desired structure. If you don't want to deal with or pay for the Pitlocks, there are less expensive allen key skewers. Or you can use a decent sized cable to secure your wheels or seat. Also, never leave your bike locked up overnight in a publicly accessible location (ie: on the street, public garages. bike racks). As for best modes of locking bikes to auto bike racks, I have no idea really. Maybe try the u-lock? Also, I think some/most roof or bed mount racks have locking attachments. [RBW] Re: Soma Grand Randonneur or Hetres or Compass Babyshoe Pass
I have a pair of the light Soma GRs from RBW on my AHH. I have only been on one ride since getting them so not much experience yet. They seem like very nice tires. Prior to the GRs I had Cypres tires on that bike. Just looking at them the size difference is very noticeable. I haven't noticed a big difference in cush/comfort going to the much wider tire. I think the handling of the bike is a bit less responsive/more stable with the bigger tire. The GRs seem more audible than the Cypres were. I have not ridden Pari-moto, Hetre, or Bayshoe Pass. I think these are all fine tires, and you won't go far wrong with any of them. Keep in mind the GRs are slicks. I kinda like that, but others may not. On Thursday, August 7, 2014 1:45:03 PM UTC-7, RJM wrote: Time to start shopping new tires for the Sam Hillborne and I've been thinking of going a little wider than the 38 Pari Motos. I live and ride around Washington, DC. My current standard carry is a hefty U lock (OnGuard, the shorter version) and a folding lock (Abus Bordo). Also locking skewers and a cable permanently attaching the saddle to the frame. I can park indoors at home and office; at church, the one place I park outside regularly (opportunity for thieves to scout and return), I keep a big chain locked to the rack - my brother, wife and I all have keys for it so we can each use it when we're there. Also, I ride my boring-looking (but still fairly nice) black aluminum Trek, with essentially the same lock strategy, if I'm going somewhere where I or my shiny Sam Hillborne might draw unwanted attention. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-BB2IXcFKCrw/U-Q8ASEHodI/Bg8/s2BqzkZdtoE/s1600/Photo%2BAug%2B07%2C%2B7%2B20%2B38%2BPM.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-anvKLsAzavI/U-Q7mjEaqoI/Bgs/rdWB8EkBT-k/s1600/Photo%2BAug%2B07%2C%2B7%2B20%2B05%2BPM.jpg On Thursday, August 7, 2014 6:34:48 PM UTC-4, Serial Griller wrote: I normally do my ride and lock my bike in the rack on my truck since I seldom ride from home.( I live in the boon docks) What kind of lock set ups are popular with all of you. [RBW] Re: Bike locks ?
Depends on the situation for me. At my condo, I have two New York Fahgettaboudit locks on my Sam and two more on the Betty. This is supplemented by a Kryptonite mini U lock attached to a Krypto cable locked around a bike stand for each bike . The Brooks saddles has a bicycle chain wrapped in an inner tube that is attached to the frame. If I go out for something quick, I just bring one Kyrptonite Evolution Series 4 with a Kyrpto cable. If I need to leave the bike for a longer period, 2 Kyrptonite Evolution Series 4 with the Krypto cable. I have 12 Kryptonite U locks to lock all my bikes, The Bromptons stay in the condo. Though I like the idea of Pitlocks and need to give it serious consideration. Bike theft here in Toronto has always been a problem. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread
1. Saluki 2. 60cm 3. 28 lbs, 42 lbs at full commuting load 1. XO-3 (1993, 26), single speed 2. 59cm 3. 27 lbs. I would have figured the XO to be a couple lbs lighter but I have some junky Kenda 1.95 tires and a B67 saddle that probably account for a pound or two of weight delta just there. I believe my 650B converted, 531C framed Trek was right around 32lbs racked and fendered. I'll have to come back to this once I receive my new-to-me rSOGN and build it up! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Crankset Question
There seem to be variations of Sugino cranks with similar names. The variety comes in the chainrings, some with ramps'n'pins (like your example), some with steel grannys, some with steel middles and /or outers. Another variation is tooth counts: 24/36/46; 26/36/46; 24/36/48. No huge differences but worth finding out what you're getting if it's important to you. But $99 for a nicely finished complete crankset is a decent bargain. dougP On Thursday, August 7, 2014 8:03:43 PM UTC-7, Peter M wrote: As a frequent Amazon and Rivendell lurker I saw this deal and was wondering if they were the same cranks? Re: [RBW] Re: One week without a front derailleur
I could rig a 44/39 pretty easily I think, depending on BCD, and I have a 17t WI cog. A 22t FW would give the 5 tooth difference. We ride over to White Industries World Headquarters, I buy a 22t FW, and spin it on while you explain the concept. Ride out to the Tin Bar, discuss it over a pint. Flip the wheel and ride up Stage Gulch. Flip again at the top. Ride down Adobe to Manor, flip again for the Manor climb. Ride back to the new tasting room across from Lagunitas, discuss further. This would be fun even if no one at White was interested in the demonstration... [RBW] Re: Bike locks ?
I use: 1. Kryptonite evolution mini lock when dining in Maryland Suburbia. 2. I use special security bolts from http://www.bicyclebolts.com/collections/security-allen-bolts They can also be used for securing seatpost in frame, and water bottle cages, too. Can also be used for securing some saddles to seatpost and fender stays, racks, etc. 3. I also use a really long Kryptonite U lock for securing front wheel and frame to a post. I am looking for a solution though for securing wheels. I used to use the Zefal Lock n Roll skewers. But they are easily defeated, and twice the levers were jammed somehow and could not be taken off the way they were supposed to. Good thing it wasn't during a flat repair or I would have to walk home. I think Pitlocks would be my next choice but that is a big investment. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Compass 650b 38 vs. 650b 42 mm tires question.
Loup Loup vs. Babyshoe Wonder what the ride quality diff is. They are so close in size. Flat diffs? Trying to decide on one or t'other for my smooth road riding with my 175 lb. body on my Hillborne. The 38's might get me some more clearance under my fenders, vs. my 42 Hetres. Can use the Hetres as spares for my other bike. So thinking of going that-a-way if they will perform the same.
